Been following you for awhile now; so it's so sick to see you discuss Alcest! They're one of my favorites of all time too!
Love your ranking man, voyages de lame is my favourite
Another big Thank you! You put me on this band and I love them.
So far I've only heard their latest release in full, but I can't wait to dive into their music more at some point. Awesome band from what I've heard!
Just started along the same path. Can’t stop listening to Spiritual Instinct and I’m excited to check out the rest
@@mojuy11 I just checked out the album Ecailles de Lune recently and that one is awesome too!
Same here man! Started out recently with Spiritual Instinct, now I'm listening to Kodama and fuuuck it's perfect. What I really like about Alcest is ESPECIALLY their album covers!
@@grapplingbuddy2418 Nice! I've worked my way through most of their work now, still have to listen to their first album but that's it. Quickly become a favorite band for me!
Thanks for introducing me to this band.
the alcest demo is cool too:)
I love Shelter so much.

Same here, Shelter is definitely underated and is the black sheep of Alcests entire discography. It's my second favorite Alcest album even with three of the songs from it being my favorite pieces Neige has ever written.
For the rest too hard, but for the #1 I have to agree with you, Écailles De Lune is a masterpiece.
Souvenirs is the best lawn mowing album of all time and my favorite Alcest album.
Since we talking french metal, check out Silhouette and their debut album "Les Retranchements". Female vocals and black metal go well together 😍.
Sur l ocean couleur de fer is one of the most beautiful songs ever
Love 'em all, i'm so thankful that the last show i saw (before you know what) was Alcest in Feb 2020, so good. Can't really say what would be my least fav
Alcest = Therapy for your ears!
*Unpopular opinion here*
I actually really like Shelter, it's probebly my second favorite Alcest album. Three of the song from that album are my favorite Alcest songs Neige has ever written. Despite it being a lighter album I really feel like it still has a lot of what makes Alcest other albums great even if it isn't metal. My favorite album is Les Voyges however. It is the most consistently strong album and the atmosphere, melancholy and production in it is incredible.

I'm split between shelter and ecailles. The latter doesn't have that many songs as compared to the rest. But whatever is there is pretty amazing.

My list. I love all the albums but if I would say one that was slightly disappointing it would be Spiritual Instinct.

6. Spiritual Instinct: not one of their best imo, a couple of songs seem kind of unfinished or lacking a little bit of direction but still really fun to listen to, there's a couple of real bangers too, so it's far from bad.
5. Shelter: kind of underrated actually, the fact that there's almost no Black Metal influence doesn't bother me at all, the writing is beautiful and inspiring and there's no song I would skip listening to it again.
4. Souvenirs d'un autre monde: really serious kick-ass debut. Great songs overall, quality production with a little bit of good old-school blackgaze roughness... Still one of their best to this day.
3. Les Voyages De L'aime: this is the album that granted them the name they have now, and it shows. It refines and elevates every element in Souvenirs. I can't see it aging, honestly, it feels flawless.
2. Ecailles De Lune: maybe it's too much of a personal choice to rank it higher than Les Voyages, but I think it's kinda more self-contained in comparison, idk. It exchanges length for quality, resulting in a perfect record to go listen to in fucking repeat all day long.
1. Kodama: again, maybe a personal choice, but I just think this record summarizes the best Neige can deliver both as a musician and as an artist. It retains a little bit of that sweet, more pristine, feel of Shelter but also going back to the roots of the blackgaze sound with a little bit of a new "elegant twist". I just think Neige put everything he had learn up until that point in this magnificent record. It's melodic, but with the right amount of distorsion, the songs are longer but they are developed with grace, the writing it's fresh but also quickly recognizable. It's perfect.
french speaker here! Neige is pronounced “nezh” not “neezh”
if you love Alcest, give a try to (Les Discrets). Another shoegaze/post rock french band. I'm sure you will love the album (Ariettes oubliées). The front man used to work with Neige before.
great list but i think you ranked souvenir d un autre monde too low also alcest is my fav band of all time and my ranking would be like this
6 SHELTER
5 le voyage de l ame
4 spiritual instinct
3 ecailles de lune
2 souvenirs d un autre monde
1 kodama
1.Ecailles de lune
2. Les voyages de lame
3.kodoma
4.spritual instinct
5.shelter
One of my favorite bands.when i heard ecailles de lune for the first time,it blew my mind.i fell in love with the mermaid on the album art.what a beatifull band alcest is.
EDL is where they perfected there sound and there debut is a bit overrated.
crap i can't really pick albums, i rank by band consistency - or probably my own imaginary delusions.
something like converge, dso, mgla, alcest, then like howard jones, dio, skinny puppy or marilyn manson, idk >.>
yes give me the mold bikini
What does the word Alcest mean?
As far as I know, it's not an "actual" word, but made up by Neige. Here's what's written about it in the Metal Archives:
"The band's name Alcest doesn't have any meaning; Neige just chose it for its noble ethereal sound and couldn't imagine any other name in its pronunciation ("Al-sest", IPA: [al'sɛst]) to fit better with this music."
@@123ann5 Alcestis is the name of a greek mythology chsracter. I guess thats where he got the name from
"french blackgaze"
captions: french black gays lol
We have the same number 1 but I have to say 2 is shelter but it's not metal at all. More like indie grunge dream pop.
Looking for a thrash metal or death metal band with vocals like kurt cobain. Any recommends?
One of the best shoegaze bands ever. Les Voyages de Lame is my favorite.
