    I use hairspray for my charcoals but I always lay them flat and spray from above then leave them to dry. I found this stops the ‘running’ effect. Great tutorial.

      I have 5 finished work with charcoal and was thinking to use hairspray (didnt use yet). Would you recommend hairspray ? And brand matters or any of?

      @@Vicerium My sister is an artist and her favourite medium is charcoal. It was her that recommended to me hairspray. Any will do but she recommended a ‘firm hold’ spray. Lay flat on the ground and spray from about 18 - 24 inches away and leave to dry. I think the only way to find out is give it a try. Maybe use a practice one first.

    Love it super helpful! I’ve always done art but haven’t attended an actual art academy. For the past 2 years I’ve experienced with charcoal & created portraits, so far it has caught the attention of individuals & I’ve been asked for commissions which I have started to do so. I guess I’ll have to invest in the fixative, don’t want to risk it with the hairspray specially if it’s not going to be a long lasting film protective when my artwork is going to be framed.

  • @PettyBlue1
    @PettyBlue1 Рік тому +3

    Thank you for doing the test! I also used hairspray in art academy. When I did soft pastel drawings, I realized fixing is not only for finished art work. If you don’t fix colours between layers, the colours will rub into one, muddy tone. But if you do fix colours layer by layer, you can build up tones with different colours, and they show through each other like watercolours. The only thing that bothered me, was that white pigment tends to dissapear with hairspray, so I left it for the last (and unfixed) layer. I wonder if a professional fixing spray would eliminate this problem

    • @LinekeLijn

      It is true that the professional fix is more clear than the hairspray ^^

    The main problem with using hairspray instead of fixative is that it is non-archival - meaning that it will degrade and yellows over time, altering the appearance and durability of your artwork in the process.

    • @CoronaLisaa

      True, but hairspray could be useful if you’re just using it to seal an under drawing for an acrylic painting

    Thank you so much for the video. I have done my very first project with colored charcoal. I live in a country and area that I don’t have access to professional art products and was looking for a home product. It is deeply colorful but I plan on framing it with glass and a black Matt. I am hoping hairspray would be enough, but I didn’t even know about the hairspray until your video, and thank you for the in depth report. I spent over 15 hours on this last project (8”x11”) and everyone loves what I had did and I didn’t realize the wonderful satisfaction of creating my art. The colored charcoal was a gift to me more than 25 years ago and I’m finally starting to use them. What a wonderfully frustrating medium... and to use its unique workable features is quite satisfying and I’m learning things from it every day. I wanted to preserve my work and I again thank you for your very informative video. BTW... omg you are a great artist!!!

  • @Oshia666
    @Oshia666 4 роки тому +28

    I don't think it's worth spending almost 15 times the price for a quality fixer unless you're a professional artist working with commissions. They tend to darken the pastels too.

  • @warrenc1829
    @warrenc1829 3 роки тому +5

    Thank you, this will save me money. Fixative is four times the price in Mexico than it is back home in England. My drawings aren’t good enough yet to justify the expense. Hairspray it is, for the next couple of years.

    • @Mulberry2000
      @Mulberry2000 3 роки тому

      They are good enough, so do not put yourself down. I would use hairspray fixative for your sketches in your pad but not for main stuff. The reason why even though you think the main ones are not good enough, you be surprised how good you are when looking back. It is a permanent record of what stage you reached that point in your art journey.

      Hi Pilar! Well, for starters the hairspray is just perfect an also excellent to start practicing the distances and to see the effects. The contrasts and colors will come out even greater and with the professional fix even more and also, you can intermediate a fix and work in deeper into your drawing after putting in a light layer. Just try it out a little bit and amaze youselve on the effect but please, keep in mind.... pray from at least an arm lenght! LOL 😱

    I used professional Koh-i-Noor pastel fixative for the first time today. I followed the distance instructions, I shook the can properly before and it RUINED my painting. A beautiful chestnut racehorse turned out so dark and muddy, destroying the hues and splashing the Pastelmat. Unfortunately, I was thinking of selling it but now it is damaged. The hairspray works well on charcoal but it also darkens the colours. Am I doing something wrong??

      I am not experienced with the professional Koh-i-Noor pastel fixative, I use the one by Gianth, and that brand leaves my pastel drawings just a littlebit darker but not noticeble.

    Hi 👋 Whilst i have the policy of giving a thumbs up to any/every video involving some sort of experiment (whether it's a pass or failure) because I always favour the brave and - regardless of the outcome - it always gives you at least some more information/knowledge about any medium.
    But I have seen SO many people in UA-cam tutorials say *not* to ever use hairspray as an art fixative because it turns Yellow with age. So whilst this video showed that hairstyle *can* be used as a fixative in the immediate sense, it does not show how this method is going to work long term.
    I would be very interested in seeing what the parts you sprayed with hairspray look in... at least a year.
    A very long wait for that result to hold up in the long term I know, but I guess you could just do the spraying, put it away and work with other illustrations/colouring for a year, and then come back to it after a year. And because there's so many things you can do and learn about art (I'm focusing on coloured pencils this year), one year really would really fly away quite quickly.
    I can't see in the screen I'm on at the moment (writing a comment takes up all of my screen) when this video was done. It's September 2020 now, so if this video was done over a year ago, you could take it out now and see if there's any yellowing/how it holds up with time. I'd be very interested in that because as you mention, fixatives specifically designed for art can be extremely expensive and I'd like to know the result (in a very yes/no fashion) - does using hairspray for a fixative cause the paper to yellow over time or not? Thank you for doing this video and hi from Australia 👋

    The fixative is going into your lungs and the small hairs lining the tissue of the lungs will be glued to the supporting tissue making it difficult to breath, this is permanent damage to you lungs and your ability to breath! I know because I am a print work of some 40 years, now from using the fixative even in a ventilated area I have lung issues. Spray out of doors, with a good mask or respirator.
