Linux Nikon Z30 MTP as Webcam via Web Sockets and OBS

- The Nikon Z30 camera can't be used directly as a webcam like a UVC device can. Instead, it requires a program in the middle to make it appear as a webcam to the system. The problem is, this is only provided for Windows or Mac, but not Linux.
There is a program for Linux that connects to the camera via MTP and creates a websocket to view video in a browser. This source can be used via OBS and sent to the dummy video loopback device so it can be seen as a video source to the system.
I got it working, but the results weren't as good as I'd hoped, so I went back to an HDMI to USB capture device.

Saying "your videos are inspiring" is big understatement. Another from the series "today i've learnt".
Mate, did you just do what I think you did?
@@TallPaulTech I reckon you deserve it.
@@calibre_au6183 I didn't even know you could do donations via comments. This was my first one ever, so I was surprised. Looks like it came from Poland given the currency. That's awesome.
Thanks mate, it's much appreciated, and my first ever!
that's sick. just did one don't know where it went tho.
As a linux user since 1997 thanks for showing the effort to make things work.
I've got something more interesting planned to film tonight on the network side of things.
Thanks, Paul, this was pretty interesting. You'll get there in the end.
Yes pleaase more tech videos especially Can Bus, warm regards from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Great video. I love these tech-guides with lots of debug-output and stuff you need to compile and tinker with yourself... ./Configure; make; make install 😀
Yeah, it's about time I got back into it. A lot of people just don't care though.
All mine are UVC so I was curious and did some looking around. Looks to me like USB-C live streaming feature is only a preview and that is indeed maxed out already at 1080p, which is considered enough for video conferences. The idea seems to be to connect it via HDMI for recordings and/or better quality 🤔
Yeah, as I said, that's what I ended up going with. Still, I had to try.
You should’ve looked at a Birddog X1 instead - 1920x1080 PTZ, designed in Aus, straight up UVC output… And the option for video over network as well (NDI)
We’ve just sold one to a customer, nearly half the price of the older model and with more features … Birddog is pretty cool
4:36 - wonder how much that "model didn't match, falling back to the generic model" debug line is affecting the resolution issue.
Yeah, I wondered the same thing myself.
Why do you need to use the browser as a source? Surely the webpage is just a mpeg stream or something similar that you should be able to use as a source in obs directly
Edit: when looking through the source code it seems to return an mjpeg stream. Wondering if it would be easy to modify the code to dump the video into a /dev/video loopback device.
Nice overview, God bless.
Paul is back!
Don't call it a comeback!
@@TallPaulTech sorry, it will not happen again.
Relax, you didn't get that. ua-cam.com/video/vimZj8HW0Kg/v-deo.html
@@TallPaulTech over my head. Love it. Haha
Is the resolution a setting on the camera?
My thoughts exactly
Looking forward to the links to your other HD content once you figure it out ;)
HD is how I roll
i see your problem, you're not using windows.
Stop trying to wind me up!
Windows are useful only to temporairly lay cables through them until you drill proper hole and guide cable as it should be.
OMG. That cracked me up.
Thanks
I can't believe what's happening! Thanks
Use windows, not just looking out one
bruh
