Hello. Today I am going to write about my thoughts on IR window film.
We can easily access to a lot of IR window films on the internet, and have them installed in our houses. However, are you feeling 100% satisfied with the result?
Let’s look at how they work and what they do and see if we are really satisfied with them.
First I would like to give you a brief summary of what IR window film is.
Sunlight is composed of 43% of visible light, 4% of ultraviolet ray, and 53% of infrared ray.
Current existing IR window films are effectively designed to block the harmful infrared ray (IR) and it does serve the purpose very well.
Moreover, since infrared ray contains heat, it will also serve the purpose of insulation as well. I think It is good to have IR window film installed for insulation than nothing.
So, it is obvious that IR film can effectively block harmful rays.
My question is, is IR window film the best choice for insulation as well?
Then, why do we still have to use the heater so much to warm up the inside?
Before answering those questions, I want to talk about where the “heat energy” is coming from.
Heat temperature that we feel is from the infrared ray. Therefore, during the day time when IR films are blocking the rays, the films helps to keep inside cooler than outside.
Now let’s think about the time when there is no sunlight. No sunlight means no IR as well. In this time, what do you think IR films are doing? They can’t serve their purposes during the night because there is no sunlight to block! - no IR protection and not keeping inside cooler either!
During night times or winter, to keep inside warmer than outside, trapping warm air is the key, however IR film is not designed for keep warm air inside. That is why we are still cold inside after the sunset or during the winter, still using the heaters, and not saving money as much than we thought!
Hmm, so if IR films are not the best decision for insulation 24/7, then what is the best insulator?
I am sure you all are familiar with bubble wrap insulation. Bubble traps air in the bubble very effectively so that it can maintain the desired temperature. Air trapping skill is the best method of insulation. However, compared to IR cut film, downside for the bubble wrap is that they can’t block harmful rays. However, even with no protections from the rays, bubble wraps are still popular choice of insulator for windows because they do work the most effectively.
Then, what is the best solution to maintain the most pleasant inside temperature regardless of the weather outside that can also block the harmful rays?
