I have to say among Death Metal artists mentioning their influences SODOM is a pretty common denominator while of course a lot of others being Venom, Slayer, Exodus, Kreator, and Destruction.
Great review again, I finally got this album yesterday, I really liked it, I kind of liked the "rawish" production, but I get that it's not for everyone, but...it's Sodom, never really had a bad album, keep the good reviews coming. 🤘🏽
Great reviews guys. I always appreciate your sincerity. I listening to the album yesterday while I was on the pool and I can't deny i really loved the album and cover art. I really can't wait for Sodom albums ranked.
I loved this album but I must admit I enjoyed the last one a little more. 'Decision Day' was total fire! Also would u guys consider maybe doing a Sodom album ranking vid? They've got over ten albums to rate, it would make an epic listen
Necrotic Nick- I would agree. I really enjoyed Decision Day and while this one was good, it didn't quite match up. A Sodom ranking is a definite possibility for sure. Once we're done with Suffocation and Darkthrone we'll have another poll up for what bands we rank next.
I actually like the raw mix, we need more stuff like this from the thrash bands that have been around since the 80s, adds more grit and punch to the album. Which is something I've missed from thrash.
Love your in depth reviews guys. Looking forward to checking this one out, for some reason Decision Day was one of my favorite thrash albums of the decade so hoping this’ll grab me too
I was apprehensive about this one. I LOVE pretty much everything they've done since Code Red, so I was really gutted Tom let Bern go (and Makka ofc). The mix is rough as hell, but after 3 listens I'm sold. I love it. Euthanasia is my current favourite. Vietnam Great review as always!
My three favorite thrash records of the year are Warbringer, Sepultura, and Havok. (The Warbringer and Sepultura records were also the most forward thinking in my opinion.)
Necrotic Nick: No problem, bro. This was definitely on our list of stuff we wanted to review this year. I'd say these guys have always been a solid starter band into more extreme metal as well.
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. The doom metal aspects were killer in The Harpooneer and the title track especially. It kept the pacing interesting too so songs didn't run into each other.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, the mix isn't the best on this one especially compared to Decision Day, but it's serviceable and the song are pretty solid. It's a grower.
There are very few bands that I will tolerate when the band shows no growth or just sounds uninspired. I really enjoy it when a band takes risks with their sound. That being said, there is something to be said for bands that are consistent, and just plain good at what they do. Sodom is in this category for me. You hit the nail on the head by calling them the German Slayer. Great review guys.
Sodom is probably hands down my favorite thrash band. Don't listen to thrash a whole lot anymore, but when I do it's usually Sodom. I am however a big doom metal fan. Black Sabbath, Cathedral, St. Vitus, Candlemass, Trouble etc. I like that stuff more than thrash these days. I have every Sodom release, so it's pretty much a give that I'll get this regardless. Disagree on Tapping the Vein though. The Andy Briggs albums are probably my least favorite. His tones and riffs just never interested me. Albums like M-16, Code Red are more my thing. But for memorable songs nothing beats Better Off Dead. That and Persecution Mania are my favorite albums.
Better Off Dead is so underrated, seriously. Outside of two rock covers (which are still good, but don't really fit the tone of the album for me) every song is killer. I love Tapping The Vein too,but it's just a preference thing,I guess. Persecution Mania is still the best one, can't top that masterpiece (although my love for the album can be due to the fact that I listen to it with Expurse Of Sodomy EP and rerecording of Outbreak Of Evil attached to it. It feels more complete this way for me)
Necrotic Nick- This is yet another solid album from Sodom. I've always been partial to Agent Orange and Persecution Mania myself. I do love Tapping the Vein and Better Off Dead. There's only a few album that I would say are flat out misses in their discography honestly. We may have to rank them one day.
I agree with the rating. This album is fuxking great but it’s nothing they haven’t done better before. I’m not really complaining because it’s sodom. \m/
I personally enjoyed it a lot, although you can argue that Decision Day was better. Mix isn't the best, but I feel that rougher, grittier mix is what gives Sodom its punch, some of their modern albums sounded too clean for my taste. It's a pretty solid album and I hope that the album to come will be even better, cause this line-up has a lot of potential
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I guess they were going for a grittier sound this time around which I'm all for but the mix could have been better and still been gritty as hell. I'm curious to see where they go from here. I'd like to here some more killer leads with Frank back in the band too.
@@thrallsofmetal what do you guys think of Metallica's S&M 2? I agree this has been a great year for thrash but that is one thrash release I didn't give any attention. Metallica with an orchestra was always uninteresting to me.
You should do a review of Dread Sovereign's new album, Alchemical Warfare, when it comes out. The album will be out on January 15th. The first single is out now and it's entitled "Nature is the Devil's Church".
Upon hearing the intro, I thought it sounded familiar. It's pretty much a new version of the intro song that's on the live album "Mortal Way of Live" (pretty much used on the entire "Persecution Mania" tour too). Great to see Blackfire back but I feel like there will always be something missing from Sodom since after "Tapping the Vein"..Chris Witchhunter! Atomic Steif and others were great but Chris had this huge Motorhead vibe in his double bass that I miss.
Necrotic Nick- Ah, I just have Marooned so I wasn't familiar with that intro. I think Blackfire brings some fun back to the band for sure. Witchhunter would've been nice. I like the new drummer but I liked Witchhunter's more unhinged style too. D-beats for days. lol
I don't get the Kirk Hammett stuff. He does a lot more than pentatonic and whammy bar stuff. The solos on Dyer's Eve, Creeping Death and Master of Puppets come to mind. But I get your points
Really decent album, but when a band has released shit like Agent Orange, Tapping the Vein, In The Sign of Evil, M-16, Persecution Mania... the album has to do a lot for it to be held up with those... don’t know if that quite made sense but it’s hard for sodom to really top those albums. Still, Genesis is a decent album, love those death metal parts... my type of thrash... and I agree with shred, if this had a guitar tone like tapping... well it would just be on another level. Can’t wait for the sodom ranking 🤘
Necrotic Nick- I don't know if we'll get a repeat of those album but they've had some other bangers in recent years. I still really love War in Pieces and Decision Day but they're still not on Agent Orange's level. I'd love to do a Sodom ranking. After we're done with Suffocation and Darkthrone we'll have another poll up for future ones. Sodom may be in it.
@@thrallsofmetal Good point, curious to know what you think of their self titled?... ah okay we need that sodom ranking! Pretty good review - Sodom are masters but I feel I've heard all there is to hear from. How about some black metal - I think this new Inquisition album is pretty good.
Necrotic Nick- There's some cool doomier moments on this new one as well as some almost flat out death metal nods as well. They're not reinventing the wheel in any sense but it wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be. I choose to stay away from Inquisition due to Dagon's "extracurricular activities".
Better Off Dead is a pretty damn good album. Tapping The Vein is classic, with some great death metal on there. Their last album, Decision Day, from 2016 is some of the best thrash I've heard in 20 years.
Necrotic Nick- See, I was a big fan of War in Pieces and M16 as well so it’s hard for me to say it’s the best since Tapping the Vein. It’s definitely another solid album from Sodom though.

We weren't saying the death and doom elements were new to the band, but it's definitely something they haven't touched on in awhile and most of their discography is pretty much straight forward thrash minus the early black metal material. You get a lot of Motorhead worship and such but they're thrash band. Not really a secret. Anyway, thank you for watching even part of it and we'd love to hear more from you. Take care.

Sodom, Warbringer, Testament and Warfect, the best thrash album of this year
