Making Hollywood TRAILER MUSIC On A LAPTOP...

- In this video media composer @ChristianHensonComposer shows us how he likes to help tell stories through a more emotional angle compared to simply describing the action with music. By re-scoring a computer game trailer he demonstrates how it is possible to create Hollywood-grade music from a laptop, a mini keyboard and a pair of phones in a hotel room!

Hi Christian, so glad that you're doing well. I've also just started using Cubase. Hoping for a tutorial from you in your wonderful style. On a side note, I'm really struggling with depression and anxiety. How are you doing mentally? Hoping for the best. Thanks for being here. God Speed.
So sorry to hear this. It’s been a tough 18 months. I am very lucky to have a hugely supportive wife who has given me so much strength. However that’s only part of the package that I have deployed to deal with my troubles:
Help others. Weak people don’t give other people strength, strong people do. A phone call, volunteer, reach out to a neighbour, anything.
Get out and exercise. Not the gym, just a long walk. It’s fundamentally what we’re designed to do. Go somewhere remote so you don’t have to do people and leave your device at home.
Eat well, sleep well, cut down on the booze.
CBT very helpful especially with anxiety and paranoia.
Tidy up and get organised.
Anti anxiety meds. I’m in SSRI’s I don’t cry when I watch movies anymore but it’s a small sacrifice for being a better Dad and husband.
Most importantly get help when you feel you need it.
Hope this helps mate.
C x
Thanks Christian, it really does help, and it resonates deeply. I imagine that we are all walking this path together, each of us fighting our battles, seeking our peace.
I understand the sacrifices you've made, the balance you've sought to strike to be there for those you hold dear.
I can feel the grim reality of things. That sensitivity helps me create but it can so quickly overwhelm.
I also take some sort of anxiety pills. They dull the world, but I still cry, even whilst writing.
Anyway… I just wanted to say that I'm always quietly cheering for you. Your music, Crow Hill, your vision-it matters. We're just a blip in time, but you always make this blip count, and your messages always offer a glimmer of hope, especially for those with gentle hearts.
@@TheCrowHillCo
@@TheCrowHillCo The fact that you responded with this message is actually making me emotional. Thank you for all that you've done in the music world, and for continuing your efforts even now. I'm glad you're doing well and that your support system/family are also well!
Blessings to you, from LA
Sincerely,
JON Remi
Hi, I hope things get better for you. Praying things get better. In the meantime, like Christian already stated, def get out doors. Get help. Don't be afraid to use meds, I'm on anti-anxiety meds too. And yea, take the happy moments in life and make those count the most.
Thanks so much, Christian for taking the time for doing this!!! and congrats on Cubase, way to go!!!
great to see you back and so openly generous as always Christian.
This is awesome! I end up writing scores in all sorts of random locations (coffeeshops, campers, etc). It's so fun to see someone else do something similar!
Such a beautiful piece. Its amazing you eek out that emotion on a M1, an Akai and your amazing libraries.
Those strings really remind of the movie Living with Bill Nighy for some strange reason.... Great movie and a fantastic score too.
Beautiful beautiful music. And such great sounding strings instrument. 👏👏👏
Thanks so much, more where that came from!!!
I love it - more of this sort of thing please! I think I’ve been really limiting the potential of these libraries by just playing them with two hands. Yes, they sound completely gorgeous but, as you’ve shown us here, there’s so much more to be discovered by ‘tweaking’ individual notes, trying different gestures. Maybe I’m just a bit dim, but I hadn’t been doing this so found it really inspiring.
Phew that’s what I was hoping!
Lovely work Christian. Isn't it amazing what can be done with a small, mobile setup these days?!
It is CRAZY!!!
I've been loving all the content you've been putting out on this channel. Its so interesting to see the behind the scenes stuff but the things that caught my attention most is the midset stuff. It so easy for bedroom producers to feel isolated and combining that with the typical neuroses of a creative endeavour can be a potent mix. I think its so nice for people to know they're not the only one to feel that way.
Yeah I used to feel v lonely. It’s nice to be part of a community.
Excellent work, Christian, as always. Your music pulls you right into the trailer and makes you want to see that film and also hear more of that music. 👏👏👏Also, your enthusiasm is infectious.
Simply beautiful.
beautiful!
Stunning piece of work. Love this.
Sounds amazing as always ✨
Exceptional piece of music ❤
Great music, really emotive
Top quality job.
Cubase and Death Stranding. Nice. Lovely sounds too.
Thanks so much.
Always so helpful to see these things, mate. Thanks so much for being just a pure inspiration to those of us who continue to push on!
impressive as always!.
Beautiful
I don't know if you know that but DS is quite a popular game , so this is Death Stranding 2 , an upcoming amazing game and I would LOVE to hear this soundtrack in the game! Excellent job Christian ♥
Thank you for everything you’re doing for the Music Community - truly amazing and inspirational work, and it helped me get some heart to begin posting my own material. You’re a legend!
I’m making music - MY music.
Looking forward to seeing your company continue to do its thing.

THATS WHAT WE LIKE TO HEAR!!!
Very inspiring 👍
Good to see you on Cubase !
It’s nice to be back.
A really fascinating take on the trailer! It is unexpected but works quite well!
I greatly appreciate you sharing the walkthrough like this - it is good to see how you put together these concepts yourself. Thank you!
Thanks so much (he says blushing ever so slightly).
String Murmurations is just beautiful! Always loved your portable setup edits. Amazing how the new Apple silicon and enough ram means we're pretty unlimited these days.
Yeah it means I can go places with my family!
not only is this an amazing composition, but you also used one of the games i am most excited for! i got chills!
Great video !!
I have been watching you for years!!! I love your videos! They are all brilliant! This is an exercise in making extremely good very great! I just wish I was your neighbor instead of halfway around the planet!!! Much admiration and love from Portland, Oregon.
Good insights, inspiring demonstration, gorgeous music! I use the DT 1770 Pro, which *are* expensive, but my day job involves mixing live streams and webinars and such, so I need the upgrade. I have a love-hate relationship with them; but you’re dead-on: you can trust them. They don’t hype anything.
Great to see you in Cubase, Christian. Holding Option gives you quick access to the Scissors. :P
I'm gonna need every bit of help I can muster so thank you!!!
@@TheCrowHillCo Haha, yeah it's known for the steep learning curve. I reckon you'll like the Sampler Track if you've not already looked into it. Have fun! :P
Lovely stuff.
Great stuff Chris!
CH lowkey switched to Cubase and thought we wouldn't DEMAND an explanation?! Yeah mate, you heard it right, doing a "WHY I SWITCHED TO CUBASE AND YOU SHOULD TOO (WHAT MOST REVIEWS DON'T TELL YOU)" video is your TOP PRIORITY now. Chop-chop! 😂
He already did one didn’t he? Why I’m deleting everything & you should too? Anyway here’s a bottle of Blue Nun.
I don’t think it’s a switch. Multi DAW user.
He did explain to us that he's switching to Cubase in the "deleting everything" video.
@@peoplelikefrank that Logic license lasts 4ever 🥹
I'm super chuffed about it.
Amazing.... its to good for this trailer so inspired.
Oh, you switched to Cubase. Was it difficult to learn? Just learning Logic. You've been hugely influential. I love your music. And your personality.
Sounds really great. I am in the process of moving across to Cubase. I purchased v12 a while back and I am planning to move across to PC. I used Cubase back on the Atari St many years ago, but have used Logic ever since going to uni and it was all Mac's. I have an M1 Mac but the basic one and it is not sustainable if I want to get back into heavier productions with Libraries. As getting a Mac with a large hard drive and ram is just too expensive now for it be to a sensible investment. I know Guy Michelmore said stick the external drives to the lid, which is a great idea but I am worried it will be a hassle and the extra weight. I can get a 13900k PC with 64gb of ram for about £800. To get a laptop equivalent in Mac form would be thousands. I will still keep a basic Mac laptop for Internet and for sketching in Logic or maybe just Cubase. I really like the Midi on the Cubase as well. I mean why did Logic get rid of the chord track with V9! I also want to get back into Ableton, it was great for Live recording sketches and being on PC is a bonus. All the audio plugins I have will run on the PC as well. I think giving us the opportunity to mess around with Cubase file will be very interesting and makes your video more interactive and your able to understand the techniques better. It will certainly tempt me to purchase your libraries! It's great to see you in your usual enthusiastic style, pushing forward.
I can understand the idea that you want to get rid of external hard drives but honestly, a 4tb SSD USB-C external drive is really fast enough to manage your libraries directly from it if you have the good cables.
Plus, if you want a Mac, maybe you can check on second hand market for a M1 (or M2), you'll have a wonderful machine for a fraction of the price.
Of course my goal is not to discuss your choices, you probably have good reasons to buy a PC ; it's just an advice if you didn't had the opportunity to think about this question :)
Went to your profil btw and I loved "What Can We Do But Love"!
I think a pairing down of sounds and libraries is never a bad thing. Simply archive, you can always grab if in real trouble.
Excellent, thank you for putting this video up, it’s always nice to see how someone else works.
Yeah there’s always something that creeps up that makes you go… “ahhh now that’s interesting”.
@@TheCrowHillCo oh yea!
Great video, it's really appreciated. I noticed the tattoo in this video: it still speaks to great work that you've done. And you have so much great work ahead of you!
Too much reverb? Nope. Just much more than I'd have the confidence to use! I'll try to let reverb flag fly a little higher in future!
You can never have too much reverb.
Master class 😎
I've never used a tower for scoring. It's always been on a laptop, windows 10, cubase 5, 24G AMD Ryzen 3
Hi Christian, I have been following you for years now ... thank you so much for all the help and extremely hard work ! It is so good to see you back ! One quick question: what software tool do you use for the screen recording in these tutorials ? Thanks, best, Björn
Hello Christian. Love your posts. If your viewers are looking for a midi controller similar to yours I did some research and found a company which makes something similar. The Midi Maker has something called the Sparrow 3X100mm midi controller and it’s under $100.00us. I made a wooden housing for mine but it’s not necessary. I’ve been using it for almost a year with no problems and it may be a great alternative to the one you have for people who want to get something in a hurry. In any case thanks for all your hard work and postings. Cheers!
Sounds lovely, I do love this game Death Stranding I found it very emotional for a video game with good ingame soundtrack.
I must check out the soundtrack.
Hello, Mr. Henson. I hope this message finds you in good health and happy which you surely deserve after dealing with the craziness which you most certainly didn't deserve. I'm interested in your decision to change from Logic to Cubase. It's funny, because way back when I first became a Spitfire customer, I chose to get a Logic setup because that's what you were using. To be clear, I'm 69, and not in any way 'a fan boy', which is a term I've always thought was demeaning, but I definitely look up to you as a man well worthy of respect as a composer, and as a communicator. If you find the time, I'd be ever so appreciative to hear your thoughts on Cubase over Logic. If you're too busy, I'll understand and simply wish you the best of luck with your new venture, "The Crow Hill Company. Take care. - Brian Cooper, Shinkai Studio, Japan
Dear Christian, What would you say are the pros and cons of Cubase vs. Logic? If you have time, I’d love to hear/see your thoughts on this. Thank you! 🙏🏻
I'm gonna need a bit more time with it.
And the 770 isolation is pretty good.
Two things. Firstly, wonderful what you did with the music and I look forward to downloading the Cubase file when it’s up. Secondly, the imagery is shocking. Dead babies, motorcycle accident? It’s a family show Christian 😂
Sorry with so many horror scores under my belt I barely notice these days!
Been thinking of making the switch to Cubase, due to the increased trailer work. it’s just the thought of yet another DAW learning curve. But i know how good it is, especially for large sessions and templates.
I will certainly report back!
@@TheCrowHillCo Excellent!
Beautiful work! Would love to see your plugin and sample library list. Do you work exclusively in Cubase or do you use other DAWs as well?
I used to be logic. I got rid of all my sounds save ones from thecrowhillcomoany.com and fab filter plugins.
Any reason for choosing the 250 ohm version of the headphones? I got the 80 ohms myself just based off a quick skim of reddit discussions.
I think they’re louder? Better for planes?
The DT 770 Pro is the 'NS-10' of headphones. Not the best in the world, but you know what you are getting, every time!
Oh come now they’re not THAT bad!
@@TheCrowHillCo Hey I was trying to compliment them! I have two pair! :-)
I have these but at 80 ohms. Should I have gotten a higher ohm? These sometimes seem low volume.
Korg MicroKey. Only mini keyboard with actually great action and velocity response. It’s seriously playable. Try one if you haven’t!
Thanks I’ll give it a go.
I really want to know about that 3 fader controller 😅
Beautiful piece. Christian, have you given up on the Monogram controllers? You seemed to really like them before. I bought a few some time ago, and then last year, I ordered and paid for more. I think it's been over a year, and I still haven't gotten them. I'm wondering if that company is long for this world.
I think the component shortages has really stumped smaller companies.
What a lovely string sound! What’s the sound you’re using?
aah there you are Christian - glad your still going strong post spitfire
Beautiful video once again Christian -
One thing I really want to know for my travelling kit - what are the best bluetooth speakers for you, what were you using in this video ? Was it a Bose ?
That was the hotel. I don’t use speakers the ones in the computer are just fine.
Great stuff, Christian. How are you finding Cubase?
Good. I used it about 20 years ago so some muscle memory is coming back!
It’s refreshing to be routing around for stuff again.
Hi! Congrats for your recent change to cubase. I have a question for you. Why don't you use colors to distinguish your tracks?
Cos I don’t know how to yet?
@@TheCrowHillCo Project > Project Colors Setup.
Here you can configurate the collors of the project and number of collors.
Then select "Color for Selected Tracks or Events" from the Project menu to colorizing your tracks. There are short cuts available to simplify the process.
how do you do powerful subbass in low strings?
With a synth!
What's with the switch to Cubase?!
New chapter new daw.
@@TheCrowHillCoSung to the tune of “No Woman No Cry” - thanks for always sharing the good stuff.
I have to admit that the original score in the trailer fits much better the mood of the story. I was hoping for finding out how they created these beautiful soundscape instead of interpreting in a new and not better way…
How's the latency - especially the midi - without an audio interface?
Never had a problem with that at all?
I have to ask - what game is that? The images of a child injured/dead look a bit concerning. On a second note - you're clearly back in action. Good to see it.
Thanks so much (death str anding 2 btw) being able to do what I do is an honour and a joy. x
Anyone know of a string murmurations type plugin, but for vocals or choir?
intrigued It looked like you were running DT 770's straight into your laptop and they were 250 ohms. Was there another component ie interface/ mic amp. I only ask as I bought some but chickened out and got 80 ohms worried me cheap Roland quad capture wouldn't be powerful enough to get enough volume out of them. Cool vid as usual. Sorry picked a boring question but I am genuinely intrigued.
the newer Macbook Pros are specifically designed to support high-impedance headphones
Seem to work fine for me. Nice and loud, part of this video was made on a train.
Kojima-San would be proud. Honestly, sounds amazing considering it's just a dude on a laptop. More videos like this would be great!
Too kind thanks so much!
Are you having Audio Performance issues with Cubase 13? If so, how did you resolve them?
Seems to be OK, but TBH I'm not really putting it through its paces yet.
Hey thanks. I suspect you have a newer computer and will not have the same issues. Seems to be a problem with M1 Ultra. @@TheCrowHillCo
Haha, I use nuances with my mpk mini too the exact same way.
Interesting, switched to Cubase?
Having a dabble.
Fantastic work with a limited setup. Do you think it's possible to write some decent music just using a mobile phone?
That may be a step too far for me my friend!
To be fair the greats did it with pencil and staff paper, but as far as the sample instruments, probably not. You could make something very advanced in GarageBand, but at a certain point it wouldn’t be worth the sacrifices.
@@ghost-user559 I think Caustic is quite an underrated app for making music if you're on the go or have a non-existent budget.
Christian, jeepers, do you do Cubase now? :)
I dabble.
😮 Hi Christian! When and why did you change to cubase?
For a change. Just keep me on my toes.
Hi Ch your DT 770 are the 32 or 80 ohm? I don’t know what are the best using laptops and phones without a interface
I've been using the DT 770 Pros for several years, however marmite never once came to mind. I love them, but the question is, do YOU like marmite, Christian?
@ChristianHensonComposer switched Logic to Cubase ?
One of his recent videos on this channel he talks about a sort of reset he is doing, including switching primary DAWs.
While I admire being DAW-agnostic, I must admit I improved so much of my Logic work, learning by watching Christian use it. I still prefer Logic.
The fact that your not using a soundcard with an asio driver is mind blowing to me.
I thought the same thing. I think 🤔 it must be because he is using a MAC and not a PC
@@screwloose_productions If thats the case my next computer will be a mac. Ive been pc my whole life.
The M1 headphone pre sounds perfectly usable. I was pleasantly surprised
This question is alien to me. Why would that be a problem is it a Mac thing?
@@TheCrowHillCo Because when you use a pc laptop, the Latenct of the sound drivers is too high to use a midi keyboard without using a separate plugin sound card.
I see you’ve switched from Logic to Cubase, how you getting on with it?
Liking. I used to use it 20 years ago so there’s some muscle memory.
CH using cubase!!
Christian what Ohm are your DT 770’s?
Migrated from Logic to Cubase? 😃
Having a dabble. There’s some stuff that is sending me up the wall with logic.
@@TheCrowHillCo Cool! I’m turning to Cubase for two areas, sheet music and surround/immersive mixing. The score editing in Cubase is of course not aiming at notation software but I think the score rendering is far better than Logic. Also, AU(v3) plugins get their channel order messed up when I go beyond 7.1. Any Atmos mixing in Logic better be using stock plugins or sticking to all tracks having to be mono/stereo and sent to a renderer. Cubase manages to handle both the channel-based and object-based worlds at the same time and 3rd part surround VSTs reverbs shine.
Oh well, rant completed. Working in Logic today because the session is not suffering from those drawbacks and I can just get the job done quick.
Until Logic does a massive update…
So nice to see you on Cubase, the trailer sounds great.
I'd get on the ink palette and get some colour in your sessions 🎨 🖌 🎶
Trying to work that one out!
@@TheCrowHillCo It's preferences on the main menu for defaults, but there's a little pallet on the top bar to colour individual tracks as you go
I’ve been with Cubase since late 80’s despite everyone saying ‘Logic is the industry standard’, it might have been once but Logic seems too limited by comparison.
Hah, you switched to Cubase!
