Great video Murray. I was in exactly the same spot just 3 months ago for my holidays back in my hometown of Crinan. Now watching this video from my residence in Northern Borneo and missing every second of it. Thanks so much for the excellent content, especially for those of us living so far from the Motherland.
Northern Borneo - WOW! Never thought my videos would be watched from so many far flung places ! Hope you had a great trip when you were over and thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Once more wonderful to see you are sharing your interests with your son. Looks a good place for a diversion time and plenty of great views.I love the outer Hebrides.
Really nice video. Great views from up the hill. I kayaked into Easdale many years ago on the dreichest of days. Our group toddled into the tearoom in our wetsuits for a coffee and warm up. Paddled over Corryvreckan when it wasn't busy! Boy did we take care not to go in: the quicker we got away from that area the better! :) I think we must gone over the Grey Dogs as well for I recall amazing standing waves. We stopped off on a wee former slate quarry island whose name escapes me (begins with B!). Belnahua maybe. Great drone work too. Happy days! Nice to see the area filmed so well. Great commentary too. ATB, Terry
Thanks Terry, I have never fully experienced the tidal flows around Scotland until this trip!! All I can say is respect to anyone who has kayaked over these areas- what an experience it must have been! Would love o kayak here one day (but with the flow at my back!! lol) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Thanks Steve - much appreciated:) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
To understand the strong tides in this area look at a map of the west coast of Scotland, where the chain of islands creates a funnel effect. Islay lies 25 miles of the mainland, then follow Jura, Scarba, Lunga and Belnahua to the North until Fladda island lies just 1 mile of the mainland / Luing. As the tide rises northwards, it gets split at Islay with the Atlantic on one side and the funnel on the East side of the island chain. The tide rises and falls at a much quicker rate due to the funneling effect, meaning the water level is higher/lower than the Atlantic side. Then of course due to gravity the water rushes between the islands at the Grey Dogs and Corryvreckan. Grey Dogs lies between the islands of Lunga to the North and Scarba to the South. Named after a ship was wrecked during a storm and 2 grey dogs survived. I've seen the water run through here at over 10 knots and at a certain point there is a literal step in the water on the ebb tide reaching over 1m in height. Wouldn't recommend sailing through here against the tide. The undulating seafloor causes standing large standing waves on certain sections. The Corryvreckan lies on the Southern side of Scarba, North of Jura. The entire gulf covers approx. 1 sq km, however the whirlool area occurs in a smaller segment towards the SW point of Scarba, where a ridge running southwards from Scarba continues under the water, before rising to a pinnacle 30m below the surface, around 1/4 of the way across the gulf. The sea level either side of this ridge is 180m (mainland side) and 200m (Atlantic side). The whirlpool area is around this ridge but only occurs on the ebb tide, whereas massive standing waves occur on the flood. Max flow rate through here i've seen is 7 knots. As the tide rushes over the ridge, the water flowing on the seafloor gets pushed up the ridge and sucked down the other side due to pressure differential. This flow of water then bounces of the seafloor and rises to the surface in large "plates". As these vertical rising plates rise and catch the horizontal flowing water on the surface, the edges of the plates start to spin, causing whirlpools. Largest whirlpools that I've seen here are pushing +25m in diameter, we got the whole ribs in, nose down in the eye. Worst personal experience was a huge plate pushed us up, sucked us down under the edge of another plate which came over the side of the rib. Sitting at the front was like a wall of water rushing into the boat, pulled us near enough horizontal before great skipper got us the **** outta there. Source: Worked at SeaFari Adventures for a number of years :) Epic vid mate and i'm afraid you didn't visit the actual quarry they hold the World Champs, it's on the Eastern side of Easdale behind the Museum... Go back in September!
Thanks for this, cant recommend the rib ride enough - it was amazing... Must try and go back when the tides are at their strongest. In addition to this your team took us to some amazing wild life - the highlight being the sea eagle chick we spotted near the coast - amazing! Thanks for the info on the correct pool for the skimming - another reason to head back :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirlpool (Corryvreckan )
Thanks Again Chris - much appreciated thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Thanks Don - TBH I wasn't sure how I was going to get to the top of Dun Mor until I saw a wee line of weakness!! not fr the faint of heart! lol thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Another great little wander there Murray. That part where you walked up towards the summit of Dunmor looks to be where there filmed Bill Travers in `Ring of Bright Water` walking down towards Seil Island village. Another place I keep meaning to get to.
Thank David , I must watch the film to check this out. Its an amazing area to explore :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Jura is a great island, a walk from Lealt to the Sound of Corryvreckan a marathon. The Wild West coast is so difficult to reach that it is virtually unknown. The Paps of Jura are the best known landmark with spectacular views in all directions. Have you ever Wild camped on them for sunset:/ sunrise? Not seen this done. If you have then I would very much like to see your film
not at this time of year Henry ;) much fun was had :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Murray, I think that was spectacular! 🙂 I haven't skipped rocks in years. I love the fact of the father/son time! The green was so impressive, the colors! ❤ Always a pleasure watching from afar! Can't wait till next film! As Always! Your the best! Take care Mate! Cheers! :-)
cheers Steph , yeah the wee man had a great time.. would love to visit Easdale when they hold the world skimming championships too :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
Done the whirlpool trip many a time and the whirlpool specials when there is at least a 3.5 tide difference! Really great and there was some big whirlpools! Never been on Easdale although sail past it and surprised how big it is. Excellent video.
Thanks Mary, would love to go on the tour at the spring tides, would be even more awesome - Easdale is well worth visit :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
thanks Pete - hope you enjoy the videos and vlogs ... would love to get to more of the islands - amazing places. Really suggest the rib tour as it gives a totally different impression of the island from the sea. Scarba looked immense on the trip we took. Would love to visit it one day :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )

Hi Ray - its a great place to explore and even getting there seem like a wee adventure - heading down over he bridge that crosses the Atlantic etc etc Catch up soon M
Thanks for sharing this Murray It was strange seeing you in a pair of jeans and a T shirt ( guess this was a while back ) ;D Looked like a great place to visit. It is one of those places that is our my long list of places still to visit , so thank you this has given me a good idea of what it is like now:D Atvb :D Teddy

Great video Murray, Have you considered taking my son up some of the hills with a bit a camping? or is he a bit young for that? also a bit of quality time you had with your lad.
Another quality video mate. Grew up near Oban but never visited Easdale before. Heading up to Oban at Easter though and I like the idea of the whirlpool tour. 👍
Thanks Julian, cant recommend it enough. Its a bit pricey - but worth every penny. The video doesnt show all the wildlife we saw (even got relatively close to a sea eagle chick and lots of goats, seals etc ). Think it was called Sea fari and booked it at Easdale :) thanks for watching ATB Murray Seaside Scrambling, skimming stones and a visit to the worlds third largest whirpool (Corryvreckan )
