I consider Mr. Stiglitz to be one of the few people who is actually able and willing to talk honestly about the inequality in America. Just because he's able to make a decent living does not and should not discount his message. I believe it shows integrity. The type of integrity that the "bankers" who have been bailed out and that kicked out so many people out of their homes did not have.
good point. It is astonishing what he told us. And even more so, astonishing is that (a) people dont care and (b) people wont watch it. And the rest just wants a Bolshevik revolution b.c they cant be bothered to think. What a world. Those who manipulate us at least they can think.
"NOBEL PRIZE IN PEACE" Professor Joseph E STIGLITZ should be nominated. As his wisdom held economic policies which are needing to be injected forcibly into politics will assure EQUALITY TO ONE & ALL, WHICH BRINGS PEACE"
Great, great, great & only great respect to you dear sir for your horizon of knowledge on the subject as well as your great motive & mission for which you are fighting for 🙏
my anticipated comment is as follows: radical modernity has bring about to say that the current inequalities at any levels, institutions, like state, central banks, parliament, democracy, security, nation; money, family, work place, are becoming ill because of obsolescence, and are therefore in a big need of a cosmopolitan transformation, otherwise they become an obstacle to a necessary second wave of modernity to happen!
we must change society in order to change politics, and therefore establish a sustainable economy. And by a negative feedback reducing inequalities in society

Publicerades den 21 maj 2015 Speaker: Professor Joseph E Stiglitz Why has inequality increased in the Western world and what can we do about it? In this new book, The Great Divide, which he will talk about in this public lecture, Joseph E. Stiglitz expands on the diagnosis he offered in his best-selling book The Price of Inequality and suggests ways to counter this growing problem. Stiglitz argues that inequality is a choice: the cumulative result of unjust policies and misguided priorities. Ultimately, Stiglitz believes our choice is not between growth and fairness; with the right policies, we can choose both.
Look at India - less than 10% of the population speak English, but being able to speak English makes you more likely to enter government, management, banking, tourism, professional career-oriented occupations, etc. The ruling elite there seem comfortable to keep the masses "in the dark". It is a country of many dialects, and languages, where if you travel more than one hundred miles in any given direction - as a local person, you will end up "in a strange land" where others cannot be found who speak your language. In contrast, the Chinese are even insisting that they who live in Hong Kong give up on Cantonese, and that they and their children now learn Mandarin - that one language policy ensures all kinds of network externalities to occur in China - so it is not a surprise to me that the Chinese economy is growing faster than the Indian economy. Though wherever you go, the ruling elite in a given country do not seem that compelled to increase literacy.... Small example : Here in Canada, I gave a local library a bunch of books, which I had bought on Amazon dot com - only to find later when I inquired as to why they were not on their bookshelf, I found that they sold them to raise funds in their booksale drive.... Brand new copies of books like 'The Century' by Peter Jennings, and books by Noam Chomsky - gone for like $5 each .... Literacy, is simply not a priority with they in government. Or maybe they simply did not care for me, "unknown person" making decisions for them as to what ought to be on the bookshelf for "patrons" to select from...? So, though these economists lament inequality - perhaps they have another agenda in mind? That is to control the list of options from which "consumers" are to select from. Trust us to "manage" you - but do they really have your best interests at heart? "Here, let me help you", they say, while they fill a syringe with stuff to "put you to sleep"... Nevertheless, inequality does exist - but not everybody truly cares.Maybe I will read Stiglitz's book. But frankly, there is a lot of other stuff to choose from and only seven days in a week.
It’s interesting that the 1% who own the majority of wealth believe that they are the ‘creator’ of values and wealth. And they are winning the competition because of ‘smart’ investments. To be honest, if I am rich I probably feel the same - it is hard to acknowledge the selfishness in human nature before even changing it.
The disappearing middle class .... the end of leisure but for "the rich" and they who must observe the Sabbath Day, irrespective of whether the rent gets paid, or not.
Good one. They are just selling a book to clicky groups. They are not interested in any type of equality at all and don't want to know anything about it.
STIGLIZ doesn't understand the difference between PRICE AND VALUE PRICE under capitalism is the expression in money terms of the value of goods and services. Prices can rise or fall through the change in value. Price does not have to coincide with value, but depends on supply and demand. The sum total of the price of goods is equal to the sum total of the value of goods. Price is another instrument to exploit workers and underdeveloped countries with, through competition and the desire for higher profits. Capital goods are made up of variable capital, price and profit (surplus value), which comprise relations of exploitation. This expresses production relations between members of a class society. Societies based on capitalist wealth (profit) share three components; state property, social property and private property. VALUE represents the measurable investment of socially necessary work materialized in the time spent on making a product. Use value is created by concrete work. It is equivalent to all other values. All are the result of measurable abstract labor, that is, brain, nervous and muscular energy, and the time spent in production. Abstract work results in the value of goods. When price and value are the same, this guarantees a just and equal distribution of the national (or international) wealth.
It's not that he doesn't understand those concepts, it's that he doesn't share your Marxist framework. Differing schools will use different terminology to explain economic reality.
What a bunch of hypocrites. The LSE international inequalities Institute and Stiglitz - the guy who preaches equality but doesn't give an inch to give up his priviledged position to actually behave in a manner of equality. If he really believed in equality at all he would offer his position to someone else who has not had the opportunity to speak. But he doesn't and neither does the LSE Director. What they really believe is the type of equality which puts him in an advantaged position. Anyone with any self esteem would not want to be seen in their company for any price in case some of the rubbish they talk stuck on you. And all they plug is a book sale !! Pathetic excuse for not having anything useful to humanity.
Stiglitz is an economist. He realizes that the trade-off of him giving up his position is too high a price for not enough reward. At least he's talking about this. No one can be 100% committed and devoted to a cause, and if they are, you probably should not listen to them. Yes he's plugging his book, but the message he spreads is extremely important to talk about
How do you expect change to happen without experts sharing their research with the public and hoping they will have an effect on policy? By your logic, every scholar who thinks inequality is a problem should abandon their research, renounce all their worldly possessions and become a hermit.

Its so heartening to listen to an economist who is in tune with the real weorker's economy and not a monetarist robot.

Greetings from Ghana. Keep me updated with events.
I like to hear him. Clear, understandably and non-ideological
We know exactly what the problems are... we have studied it to death... Now is time for Action to change or burn it down and start over.
+Martin Screeton the majority don't even have a clue. that's because we're in this disaster. otherwise they would have reacted by now.
yeh! thinkers have explained how the world works, now we must change the world! See Karl Marx
Remember kids. Economy is not science. It's not even theory. It's just a bunch of competing hypotheses and ideologies.

2022 reporting: you’re right, except it’s x10 worse now and more apparent….
I wish the transcript would actually be able to follow correctly what is being said. It needs work.

Writings of Solomon .. Superman comic books ... what to read? What to read?... Umm, both?
The disappearing middle class .... the end of leisure but for "the rich" and they who must observe the Sabbath Day, irrespective of whether the rent gets paid, or not.
Isn't the LSE talking about equality a bit like a beef farmer talking about veganism
+simon wormald exactly, quite a bias POV in my opinion.
Good one. They are just selling a book to clicky groups. They are not interested in any type of equality at all and don't want to know anything about it.
He is so self promoting that he ignores he is one of "the rich" compared to many others. That he just ignores.
well, vegan beef farmers might not be as rare as scholars like Stiglitz xd
