- The price has been set. The big names have been established. And the labels are pulling all the strings. We're watching million and billion-dollar companies compete to sell us sunlight at this point.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?
Long live my 160gb iPod
Marcus Bechelli yep, mine is still working fine
Marcus Bechelli mine broke two months after they were discontinued and i didn't have the funds to buy one on ebay :'(
Mine just broke. Yay.
I'm gonna make mine last the rest of my life.

Is competition in the music streaming realm over? What do you think?
Saying competition is over isn't accurate per say. These companies will still have to compete with each other and we'll still get the best deal possible, as opposed to if there was only 1 streaming service available. This is how business works typically, an unknown market was taken advantage of, people enter it, and a sort of status quo is established, with different companies offering different levels of differentiation and cost.
At this point, a new streaming site would be just as exciting as a new Mono album...
Which service plays Cal's Mixtape
***** True, that's when you're the best in the game.
Marker5 Or it'll just turn into a situation like the Canadian telecom companies where they all collude and unanimously jack up prices knowing the average consumer isn't going to know enough about alternatives to do dick about it. I mean they're already halfway there by intentionally releasing devices with storage capacities that are somehow the fraction of laptops released a decade ago. You get far too little storage to do anything useful with which forces you into subscribing to these services in the first place.
No stache, no shades, no competition.
Anthony Fantano, forever.
I use spotify. I love Ad-block.
How do you block ads on spotify?
Woah Dude use the web player for spotify
The web player still has ads just not as much as the mobile app has
Woah Dude Spotifree. You welcome.
Shawdawg590 An easy trick I use on Spotify (non-premium) to skip ads, is just go unto an album that I want to listen to, and before the track ends, I immediately click on the next one. As long as you don't let the song officially end Spotify will not give you an ad :D
Tap water = torrents
The only time that I pay for music is at live shows and for vinyl
Teenage Hermit How much do you buy music? Vinyl is too expensive for me
a true scotsman uth
not very often haha. Maybe when I get a better job
Yeah I'm someone who buys a lot of music, I would say it's more than 20 albums a year. I also go to maybe half a dozen concerts a year as well, and for the amount of music I'm buying I just can't pay for college and do vinyl, so I buy CDs usually, but things like Lazaretto that are clearly intended to boost vinyl I do pay for the vinyl for. I also buy t-shirts for all the bands I go see in concert, but only the ones I see in concert, no others.
Wwow.......!!!
Holy shit this comment gave me hipster cancer.!
youtube is still #1 streaming service and the only one i use
***** its decent enough yea but very annoying when people delete their videos and then you end up with a load of playlists with "video not found" all over the shop
***** hardly. most albums i want to listen to i can find on youtube and they sound great 90% of the time
respite and nepenthe Only when listening to a rather underground artist, like Skaters or Bleachers. Artists like Eminem dont have their albums on youtube, usually.
cabsk8er7 luckily i dont listen to eminem
respite and nepenthe well I mean there's a million other examples lol. If you listen to any music artist on a bigger label like Capitol or MCA then chances are that artist doesn't have their music on youtube.
RIP Grooveshark
thomas cooper grooveshark was dope af
aw fuck i remember Grooveshark. it was the bomb. i still have my account info XD
Everyone sleeps on Google Play Music but its one of the best.
+Matt T In what way is Google Play Music better than Spotify for me as a user? I'm honestly interested since i don't really see a valid alternative right now but i also dislike Spotify on some levels, so I'd appreciate if you could point out what makes Google Play Music better in your eyes
Felidae Iustus What kind of music player do you use? Also if you live in the States Play Music's $10 subscription comes with UA-cam Red. So in terms of pure value it is the best option. With an Android phone all of your music stays in one app, any music you put on your is played through Play Music.
Matt T
You mean on my phone? I use Shuttle.
I live in Germany though and get Spotify Premium for 5€ since I'm a university student
+Felidae Iustus Google allows you to upload up to 50,000 songs onto their servers and then download them at will onto any of your devices. that's my draw to it.
+Ben Rodriguez For me*
am i the only on that still likes to buy cds and records? i hate streaming, i like getting the real cd, its just more personal
Jack Maines yeah, it's just you
Jack Maines youre no the only one. I still buy it.
I think a lot of people "would like" to have physical CDs. The problem is it's cheaper and more enjoyable to pay $10/month to listen to hundreds of albums a month than to buy a single $11 album a month. At least to the average person.
Do you have a portable cd-player?
Jack Maines I usually listen to a few songs on Spotify and then buy the CD.
Torrenting for life. Amen.
0nzer0 pfff like the NSA doesn't have my internet history somewhere^^
***** interesting you say that..
like if I was broke and torrenting I would be a criminal?
but if I weren't broke and pirating would I be as much a criminal?
and if i were a criminal to begin with shouldn't I be torrenting? doesn't that make sense?
***** for all you know you might be right..
but hey at least I can make sentences longer than 3 words without using a stop word
0nzer0 the FBI i'm behind over 9,000 proxies
skypjuh torrenting + buying cds and records of the artists i really wanna support for life. Amen
I seriously can't tell the difference between Spotify and Tidal in terms of the quality of the music. Maybe my headphones aren't good enough to hear the difference, but IDK it sounds the same

The _only_ thing one streaming service will be able to offer over another is exclusivity. They'll all shoot for that by throwing money at people like Taylor Swift and whoever else the kids like, and then it'll be a case where you have to pay $10 a month to ALL of them in order to get a full streaming service (much in the same way as TV streaming has gone.)
For the consumer, this sucks ass.
Zeke Iddon or we could just buy cd's bruh
***** ^^
Pretty sure the bubblegum listeners that listen to Taylor Swifts music don't even know or care about exclusivity or any other in depth music thing lol. Most kids I knew in High School didn't like music so much that they wouldn't search hard for it, it's "too much work".
***** Well yes, obviously. But we're talking about livestreaming.
cabsk8er7 you could not be any more correct. kids who listen to T swift don't give a flying fuck if if her music is on Spotify or not because it's already. available on UA-cam and uh, the radio... T swift much like bjork pulled her stuff from spotify because she wants to make $$ after all and the majority of people I know that use spotify are free users...
I think a bigger question is, is buying music dead? Considering how big streaming has become, will the market for actually buying the music take a decline? I personally prefer to buy my music (or "obtain" my music if you catch my drift), but I can't help but wonder if people will be content listening to assorted songs instead of full on albums at will.
Chandler Thomas I cant believe how many people are ok with not paying for their music, plus the joy of listening to a great album is something everyone should experience
Luca Van Dresh I will admit, I download music without paying for it from time to time. However, if I support the artist or like the album, then I will buy it. I often times will download a song or album to give it a try, then I will purchase a higher quality version of it if I like it. As a musician I understand the importance of paying for things you make, but at the same time, when you buy music, your paying for the right to play the song or album at any given time at any given location for however long you want, you don't actually own the song. That being said, I don't feel guilty about downloading something, listening to it, then actually buying it. I need to know if I'll enjoy the music in different situations.
Yeah mate exact same I sometimes don't pay for the occasional single, but if u claim ur a fan of an artist or a particular song u should pay for it but yeah sometimes it takes a few listens to know if u actually like it and sometimes an artist that u like can put out an album that isn't great and £10 or whatever is a lot to spend on something u don't like lol
I use Google Play for both buying digital and streaming digital because I am able to hold my entire library in there of previous music and also listen on demand
+djwarzone1 yeah I'm on the google ecosystem so it just made sense to use play instead of the others. I love having it all available offline and in my car and being able to control it all with voice commands through google home. And if I ask google to play something that ends up not being in Play, it will just open youtube and play that.
"Competition is dead. Competition is over. Forever."
I laughed then I cried.
vinyls aren't going anywhere. people will still buy them.
Erik Dickey amen
Erik Dickey THE PLURAL OF VINYL IS ___________ VINYL
Rip Billies That's technically correct, but doesn't make much sense. When speaking of the material it does, but for vinyl records, which are more quantifiable, it doesn't.
ACB Films sorry mate your wrong look at any credible source for records and they will never refer to them as "vinyls" serious collectors even take offence to the term haha i dont really give a fuck im just OCD so i hate seeing it. but its simple im you really feel the need to emphasize more then one just refer to them as records. vinyls is like saying fishs sheeps surfs sugars etc.
Rip Billies I know Vinyl is the correct plural term, it just doesn't make sense to me, but whatever.
does anyone uses Deezer in the US or is it only an european thing ?
lol i use it here in South America, i thought it was only me
Man I don't know how Anthony does it, I know he's married but the way he records makes it seem like he lives alone
Thank you for shaving, Wonton.

My favorite Needle Drop videos are these, where you just talk. I listen to it like it was a podcast while I play video games/clean/cook/etc. Make more! Hell, podcast!
Still would rather use BandCamp
i recently paid my last subscription to spotify and made a smooth transition back to local mp3 files. my reason for this was that spotify felt really unreliable, often i had music in my playlist disappear, i think its because of licensing issues. then i've had problems with the software on both my pc and android phone, sure they often get fixed but another (usually bigger) problem pops up in its place, then we get an interface change with a whole new set of fixes and problems.
i didnt want to pay for that.
Yeah, but probably none of them will give you the possibility to listen to bands with under 50k listeners on last.fm.
Streaming services are great for me since I can listen to albums before going out and buying a vinyl copy of it. My record collection is much more solidified with music I really love since they're the albums I fell in love with on the streaming service.
Would love to hear your review of the new Of Monsters and Men album
I have a good laugh on how most people forget about Google play music, they have a fairly decent library, they have been in the music streaming for a while so the app works well and smooth. but the biggest bonus is being able to upload 50,000 songs onto their servers and then being able to stream/download those songs on any device. that's huge when you're someone who listens to mainly local music from bandcamp or what ever other independent source, that you've purchased but you don't want to have to transfer files to all of your devices constantly.
Every time I buy a new CD, I time it so that it arrives just before a longer car ride. No one there to bother me, nothing to do but to drive and to listen. I live for these moments of true peace. With that being said, I use Spotify too sometimes. But that feeling, being on the road, listening to an album for the first time start to finish ... unbeatable.
i think you have to admit there is a chance innovation will come up with something you couldnt possible thought of
but for the most part i agree
it's all to do with how the services recommendations are tuned to your personal taste. I've been using Spotify for 6 years, I got google play music(through youtube red) and I felt the recommended music was so much better.
more videos like this!!!
i see it now, Record Labels are done, Streaming Music will slowly take their place and artist will start to singe to Streaming Services
Pirate
Everything
How about that new Circuit Des Yeux, Anthon?
The music industry is fucking shit and I really wish people payed more attention to Thom Yorke's opposition of it. Instead of trying to push that Tidal shit, mainstream artists should simply explain to their mass audience why services like Spotify hurt the industry so much, and if it's possible, pull their discography from the service.
Seriously, anyone on Tumblr can tell you that fans of artist like Nicki Minaj or Beyonce treat anything they say like it's fucking gods law, why not use that fame instead of going "hrey gais go pay monee for the saem servicis but you get bettur quality tat 97% of the ppl who listin to our shit dnt even care for :-)"
I will be having the one that has more strata east releases
I still buy CD's... and after trying music streaming services such as Spotify.. I still prefer CD's or just buying music in general.
I'm a huge advocate of Rdio on web, it's free, ads are infrequent, and there's a pretty great selection on there. The 'Me FM' feature is also really great once you've established what sort of stuff you're into.
Ultimately, though, the way to go for an impoverished person such as myself is to listen to music free first and pay for what I actually want to pay for upon becoming familiar with it. Buying new CDs and records with little to no knowledge of how I'm going to feel about them is absolutely too risky, in my view (I make exceptions for artists I'm already a fan of or wish to collect the works of, e.g. Death Grips, Radiohead, Swans, blah blah blah).
Taylor Swift has found a good way around all of this and I respect her for what she's done but ultimately I think that just encourages illegal downloads, my thoughts on which are as follows... cough cough cough. Heck, even Fripp of King Crimson kinda has the same attitude and I feel it kills a lot of what could be spreading his music to more audiences that will appreciate it and again, for the people who are aware of the music, encourages illegal downloads first. Those albums are so difficult to find and debatably so mixed in terms of quality (I adore King Crimson, no hate) that illegal downloading feels like the way to go before actually buying a copy. I must stress that, as was hopefully made clear in my coughing fit, I'm not against downloads like this, in fact I'm an advocate of them if they're the only way to go as they essentially are with bands like King Crimson and to a lesser extent artists such as Taylor Swift.
Music is basically free. As Anthony said, these companies are basically battling over who can sell sunlight the best. Only if paying for music enriches my life in some small way and is worth the money in that regard, I will pay for it, but I'm not to know that without already being familiar with the music. Additionally, paying for digital music is slightly ridiculous in my view; call me old-fashioned but if I genuinely love some music and wish to buy it, I want a physical thing that I can touch, feel and look at to place in my physical collection; heck, records tend to come with 320 download codes nowadays anyway. The fact that I feel I need to hear the music first is why streaming services are absolutely a good thing to an extent but ultimately not the best option, given the price tags (I think we all know what /is/ the best option in this case). Just my personal attitude towards it.
I give a pickle bout Taylor... I didn't even know she wasn't in Spotify.
Cause anyone who actually likes music probably doesn't like Taylor swift. But I mean I guess most people aren't that into music.
I guess but not everyone's in it for the money. I mean good for Taylor swift she's making millions, but she's already got enough. Some people do it for their fans and the music and to me spotify supports music and fans of music
Isaiah Ridge but the thing is taylor's move only worked because she has a large and loyal enough fanbase to pull it off. the problem is the young and struggling artists who actually need the money don't have enough attraction to force people to buy their stuff. look at the lineup for tidal, it's all artists who know that their fans will spend money on them.
it's an inescapable cycle. underground artists need money to make music. but they need fans to give them money. and they need to showcase their music to get fans. effectively it's just a rich get richer scheme
Isaiah Ridge Pretty sure these "underground" artists can pull their music off spotify..The game has changed dude...u need to go out and bust your ass doing concerts and sell merch, that is where the money has been and been at for YEARS now...enough with the Spotify attack bullshit. Exposure is exposure.
***** I mean even before she started the whole music thing her family was pretty well-off.
Am I the only one who hates Spotify? it's not smooth at all! Napster is the best one in my opinion
Gtfo scrub
yannsa Exactly how isn't it "smooth"?
no i hate spotify as well, don't get the appeal with so many other streaming services available. plus the ui is atrocious imo
yannsa noob lime wire is the smoothest
Lars Ulrich and his giant ass forehead would like to have a word with you.
How come barley anybody ever mention Soundcloud when talking about streaming services?
WHO GIVES A FRUCK? NOT ME!...I STAY PHUCKING WITH THE DOWNLOADS HEAVVVVVY!
I use Tidal as lossless quality music server, allowed me to delete everything off my hard drive. I kept my records. Records might have their issues, but I must love distortion because they encourage longer listening. love it.
just a question, if u had to choose, which one would you choose?
I started paying for Google Play Music about 2 years ago mainly because it had free cloud storage so I could sync my existing iTunes library. But that's the only factor that won me over Spotify. I held out on streaming because I didn't want to start my library all over again.
I always found it strange that Google never gets brought up in this conversation because that cloud storage and then adding to your library with streamed albums is a unique feature to them. But they never bothered to advertise.
i always preferred to buy an album through the label and/or band, whether it'd be a physical CD/Cassette or a collection of MP3/FLAC files
the real problem is that buying shit for the smallest amounts like albums or cables through PayPal is an absolute pain in the ass to do
i use Pandora should i switched to spotify?
Whats going to be the difference between Apple music and iTunes Radio?
Hey, could you do a review of Native Construct's debut album Quiet World? Thanks
First, a salute to *Grooveshark*, the first of the gang to die.
Second, I don't think competition is over. We're just stuck in a transitional period. The big companies will relent if what they offer is rejected, or we'll find another way around them.
Take Spotify for instance. In the past, the free user web player would pause the ad if you muted, and resume the ad once you unmuted. Reminded me of a dystopian TV show. There's a BBC series on Netflix, called _Black Mirror_, that had an episode featuring such intrusive advertising tactics (imagine a room where the walls are screens of unskippable commercials that have a shrieking alarm if avert your eyes). Thankfully Spotify discontinued the practice.
And this is why I just go to kickass to get all duuh music I WANT!!!
I when I switched back to the video tab and unmuted, the caption behind antony was:
ADVERTISEMENTS SUBSCRIPTIONS
I didn't know if he was talking about spotify's business model or his own.
How long before Spotify becomes a label?
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
SPOTIFY ARE PULLING MUSIC FROM THEIR PLATFORM (I'm guessing so the artists can get on Tidal or Apple's thing or something)
like for downloading and dragging to itunes
i almost hit you up with npr article Anthony, how'd you do on that test?
I never really like to have to pay for any kind of digital file.
But if I really like something I will get the most special edition I can get.
I feel like this will cause more music pirating in the end.
google play music, tidal, apple music, spotify
the big 4 thats all we need honestly we dont need more than 4 goid music streaming services
Then I am not a member of your "We" herd as a DEEZER user.
I can see labels selling exclusive rights to certain streaming services as a way to drive sales of a particular brand. Like theneedledrop said, record labels can call shots. If they really wanted to disrupt the market, they could release independent services.
the whole point of spotify is that you can listen music for *free* and still support artists with ads and if you hate ads there's an *optional* premium membership.
If tidal & apple music don't get that then they're not competition to spotify
Nice 'Water Boyz Ent." reference.
the labels are pulling the strings but can't apple just say 'if you don't let us stream, you ain't using itunes'?
Hey Anthony, I was wondering what you thought about the new Oh, Rose album, Seven. It was released yesterday. Very interesting Twee-ish/Post-Punk/Indie-Rock/Power-Pop (?) led by some very powerful female vocals. Also some cool synth work thrown in there, hope you enjoy.
I'm sure someone said the same thing with myspace.
I'm a music critic/music expert in 15 different music genres (mainstream and underground) that works for rolling stone magazine and a modern music history music professor at a prestigious university in the west coast. Some of you have asked:
Why aren't a lot of my favorite bands or music artists not on Spotify's Catalog or UA-cam's Catalog? The reason is that if a band or artist is too obscure, too weird, not enough fans worldwide, a niche band, etc...they don't have the minor, minimum appeal for even the underground, they won't have it! It's about the demand and supply and the appeal of indie and commercial artists that will determine if these services will have them or not! It's about business and relevancy!
Manny Cadosa we have a music expert here
I love Spotify! I Can listen to all the music i want to listen to and all the music i don't want to listen to.
i use RDIO because it works worldwide, its also something to take into consideration. also has all the music i like and it works great. recommended.
I use spotify and youtube
2:31 what's the name of that album?
I never understood why people used music streaming why not just download albums you like and listen to the music you actually like instead of having to skip songs till you find the one you like or sitting thru ads?
what the music industry needs is bandcamp. to me, bandcamp is how music should be. where else can an artist sell their own music and merch in any format they want, allow consumers unlimited streaming once an album is purchased for the amount the artist desires. there is also profiles for artist allowing their fans to see where they are playing gigs and what other bands they recommend.
no other streaming service serves the artists like that. sure its not strictly a streaming service but its got its own app and stuff, its got the potential to provide any kind of fan with the music any way they want to enjoy it. something apple claims their service will do, but i don't see myself buying a t-shirt from a band off of apple music and seeing the band send me a recommendation of another artist in return.
UA-cam Music Key?
What's your opinion on band camp
What results did you get on the NPR quiz?
forev~
yeah but I agree
Competition's over forev
All I can say is that I'm pretty happy with Spotify and unless Apple Music is going to really give something extra, like maybe cheaper options for having offline mode or something, I'm not going to be moving. I've worked on my playlists for about 3 years now and I really like them.
As someone who likes listening to music guilt-free, Spotify has been incredible :)
I somewhat agree with what you (Anthony) are saying here, I am simply hoping that there will be a resurgence of vinyl and cd buyers in the future.
Also wondering if you've ever checked out The Mint Chicks (a band containing Ruban Nielson from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Michael Logie from Die! Die! Die!) and @Peace(a group containing members of Home Brew & Very Tall Stories)
I honestly feel you may like both these group and they might lead you to dig a little deeper into some more New Zealand music
All of the pay streaming services are too expensive...
Part of your wallpaper looks like its coming off.
VER!
Music on the internet fucked up EVERYTHING!!
ive been pretty satisfied with tidal
Someone should create a music based torrent website with a music exclusive torrent client where people can just donate money to artists and companies like tidal and apple shall fall on their feet. Real musicians don't care to get rich they will always be happy as long as they have enough money to make more music.
Whatever the case may be, it's ultimately in the hands of the consumer and the artist. If people care enough about the artist they will contribute to the artist. If record labels are the obstacle, then the solution for the artist is DIY, crowd-funding, and live performance. Markets change based on the voluntary actions of the players involved. The music market is saturated. Not everyone will be able to make a living making music. It's just not how life works.
I hope bandcamp and independent music make a rise in popularity.
I like Soundcloud and UA-cam as really good streaming services. I don't listen to too many big name artists, and it serves me really well to have them where I have them. Maybe that's just me though.
You're not wrong. This is also why console video game wars are not as strong as they used to be. Artists just want their work to reach as many people as possible. However, there are a few exclusives for each console, and these do cause people to buy these consoles. Maybe a few artists or labels could bolster competition enough to weaken a monopoly on this market? This is the caveat that I would add to the video.
Review dark before dawn please
I got 4/6 on the audio quiz
I usually roll up next to a car and listen to what they listenning
I like to listen to records and albums
The only thing that can end competition is legal obstacles. Remove the legal obstacles and competition will be limitless.
How can you claim its over its just getting interesting:)
I don't really care much for streaming music, as I still use mp3 players. There are only few times I use Pandora or Spotify, when I want to find new things to listen to and then put on my music player.
Apple Music are light years behind Spotify in experience and process. Tons of indie labels are already refusing to sign up to their contract, because it's only supporting the biggest artists (when discovery is arguably mucks streaming's biggest USP). They're doing too little, too late.
Max Beckett yeh i think they are silly late to jump on this bandwaggon
no doubt the billions of apple buying sheep will jump onto it tho
I still just buy CDs because I like knowing my earnings are spent on something tangible. I don't feel complete without a physical copy.
Spotify premium is so cheap in our country. It's only 4 dollars for up to 5 people living under the same roof per month.
What about soundcloud?
