That creation is breathtaking and the story of its artist was beautifully spoken. What a powerful gesture to continue to support the struggle of Ukraine to remain a free nation. Thank you.
My name is Christopher Sobel, I am the great grandson of Janet Sobel, my father Leslie Howard Sobel who was fathers by Janet’s son Herbert Sobel. Artistic ability did not end with my great grandmother. There are many artists in our family, myself included. This is a wonderful tribute to a woman I wished I had the chance to know. ❤
Thanks for this informative video. I never heard of Janet Sobel and glad you spotlighted her. Her work is much more beautiful than Pollocks work. It has a sensitivity to it that he never able to show. In my eye, her painting is peaceful, happy whereas Pollocks always seem violent and somber. Thank you again for also talking about her history which makes it even more interesting. I will need to search the internet for more of her work.
Absolutely beautiful. I wish that more awareness had been created about her. They didn't even mention her in the 2000 movie POLLOCK that had to do with his life. Yet I can't help wondering, if Jackson Pollock were not inspired by her works would he have created the drip paintings that he is known for? I didn't even know about her until recently because little awareness is created about her. I think it's very wonderful to create awareness of such things. Especially now when it is seriously needed with what is going on today. It's very commendable to do so. I truly wish that I could see this in person but have to applaud each and every artist hanging there. I also have to note those who put this together. Outstanding!!!
A beautiful tribute to Janet Sobel, her discovery that Jackson Pollack ran with ( no pun intended ) and solidified him in Modern Art History. I admire both her and the man speaking here for their earnest love of the creative will and Spirit, and justified status of both J.S. as well as the Ukrainian artists most worthy of an exhibition of this caliber. I wish I could see it in person almost as much as I wish PEACE 🕊️ FOR UKRAINE. 🇺🇦 🙏🇺🇲🌉🇺🇦❤️🙏🇺🇦
Cool video - the work by Sobel is striking - but the title is ironic. "I think for the rest of her life, she was remembered mostly as a footnote to Jackson Pollock´s career. She was often described as the artist who dripped paint before Jackson Pollock, but I actually think Janet Sobel had a much more interesting story."
This is kind of fascinating intersection of art and geopolitics. Case can be made that Janet Sobel was basically ripped off by Pollock. Irony is that part of what happened is that she was a Russian speaking immigrant & it would have been weird to credit her at the time since Abstract Expressionists like Pollock were celebrated as having created uniquely American art. Evidence they were used as a tool of the US gov, including the CIA in the Cold War. But, now that Ukraine is useful for geopolitical reasons, attention is finally focused on her.
🇺🇦MoMa, THANK YOU for supporting URAINE and UKRAINIAN People! Слава Україні! This week attended in Ottawa, Canada an exhibition at SAW Gallery featuring Ukrainian illustrators (Mari Kinovych, Anna Sarvira etc) depicting current war and brutality of Russian invasion.

He criticized the title of the video within the video. So self aware of clickbaiting but choose to do it anyway. That’s interesting I wonder if it’s a lack of integrity or just hoping to increase visibility of an under appreciated artist.
Lots of artists dripped paint before and after Pollock. Sobel certainly experimented with paint but was, before and after, simply creating outsider, representational pieces. Even into the mid-fifties Pollock's veracity as a painter of such objects was questioned. Sobel was showing at arts and crafts fairs in Jersey, not advocating Ab-Ex. This is identity politics art spin.
Well, it's all made up anyway. He is only an artist because he and a bunch of others created a narrative. That is basically all abstract art. It needs a narrative to go with it. You're A little bit of a misogynist, so you value male art more, but these are just made up ways to determine importance when in reality there is none beyond pretence.

“She made the work because she wanted to.” Brilliant ❤️

Thank you for introducing this artist
Less angst and melancholy than a Pollock work. Love it!
Дякуємо за підтримку ❤️

Thank you very much. And hello from Ukraine.

I love the colours and feminine patterns…. She’s amazing. ❤
"An artist needs a certain amount of freedom and a certain amount of peace to create art". Sooo true!

What I see in that painting is her looking at us.

Her style and intricate dripping method shows planning and discovery. Unlike the random haphazard drips of others.
It's likely that people were using this technique even before - we just tend to point out certain people in arts

that's not art it's just a bunch of paint thrown on a canvas..the king is naked hehehe
"Ukranian"
Not interested in her "story". Pollock buries her.
