I believe this is a very common recipe used in every part of the South Asia and even in Southeast Asia like Thailand. The main reason is that people tend to use more of of the agricultural products they produce. Since rice, coconut and sugar cane is largely grows in these regions so you may see different variants of these dishes.

In lahore at the time of partition gur walay chawal were cooked throughout the winter season, they were served on medhi and eaten with achar also.
