“I try not to be like my father Sir Shina Peters with women, but I’m not perfect” - Clarence Peters

  • "I would like to judge my father (Sir Shina Peters) for how he treated my mother (Clarion Chukwurah Abiola), but I’m not in the position to.”
“The newer generation of Afrobeats artistes saw me as the old guard and was just like ‘we are tired of you’.”
    -
With these two statements, you already see how deep we got in this conversation.
For the very first time ever, the greatest music video director of my generation - who avoids interviews like the plague - opens up like he has never done ever before.
He says #WithChude was the only show where he would go this deep or speak this openly.
Just after he premiered his revolutionary series ‘Inside Life’ on Netflix, he sat with me and spoke with incredible depth and an open heart. It was well worth the 5-year wait.
    We also discuss:
    ● How he really feels about how his father treated his mother as the tabloids hit her hard
    ● Why he learnt to stop judging and forgive his father when he became an adult and had his own relationships
    ● How his mother resisted the intense pressure to abort him
    ● Why the pressure of being child to two superstars led to impostor syndrome
    ● The helplessness and fear he experienced as he moved from doing 3 music videos-a-week to the industry ‘rejecting him’
    ● Why he didn’t make his Netflix film ‘Inside Life’ for the world.
This was a masterclass - on life, on growth and on how to re-invent yourself after you feel like everything has fallen apart.

He came and toppled the Og's DJ T infact he shoved aside big productions guys like God fathers ' who though were South African based and had better technology.
Even Sesan couldn't push him Aside, and his Contemporaries like AJE films could only eat the crumbs he dropped.
The true challenge came when new artists, who had seen him as a gate keeper ( The peak OG, whose name on any music video guarantees success) had to circumvent him and they started trying newer guys like: Unlimited LA!
Then came in MATMAX and the less known Icecream who co worked on Dbanjs Emergency.
In truth Clarence was good and he is still good, but focus leads to blindness.
when you hyperfocus on one thing, you can miss important details or information around you, essentially becoming "blind" to anything outside your narrow focus.
Just like what happened to Nokia, they were the biggest, the stuck to their own OS the symbian, and QWERTY Keypad, while the others were already jumping on the Android/IPhone buttonless screen touch tech.
    Taste shifted.
Same thing that he did to DJ T when he Clarence, came back from South Africa and he started shooting "Monochrome Music Video."
Which before him, was really non existent! Pushing Tj T eventually out of the Game.
Recurring Character Cameo or Signature Cameo Aesthetic, were tools Clarence used to create a distinct visual identity, and established a recognizable brand.
Clarence did a lot for the Nigerian music video scene/ industry.
While others were trying to copy and past the western style of music video production.
Afrocentric Cinematography or "Authentic African Visual Storytelling." It is a style of music video production that embraces and highlights indigenous African aesthetics, culture, and environment without trying to mimic Western influences.
This is the legacy Clarence brought into Nigeria.

One thing is certain about entertainment, once you've reached that peak and have attained that great pinnacle of success and achievements and power and influence... You become so powerful and famous that everyone wants you out of the way. They want to bring you down.
It happens in everywhere. Even in Hollywood.
Remember Great artists and how the industry ended them.
Michael Jackson, Whitney, R. Kelly, Diddy... Now they gradually going on Beyoncé and Jay-Z. But they focused on Jay-Z for now b4 they come for Beyoncé later.
Nigeria is even better sha but it worse in Hollywood.

Back in the days, if you see “Clarence A. Peters” at the beginning of the video then you know you would a masterpiece. His videos were top notch, well crafted and directed. His production was the best during his era. I love his work. E come make me like the guy wella. But noticed he wasn’t a publicity guy. He chose not to be seen and all of a sudden he vanished. Then the newbies took over. Clarence has my respect anyday. I pray he comes back stronger.🫡
