Free League is the new leader in RPGs - Not only are their systems and engines amazing, but their artwork and well thought out little extras are stellar🥰🥰😇😇 They have become really my only company for any RPG needs🥰🥰 Love Geek Gamers - A simply stellar show - Ty ty for all ya do😇😇🥰🥰
Just a note that the solo player's ability Sole Survivor lets you push a roll without gaining a condition but it does cost 3 WP each time - love your channel by the way!
I just started my first Dragonbane solo campaign this week and I'm having so much fun! I was really surprised at how fast Free League was able to ship it to me. Great review!
Thanks for reviewing the Dragonbane solo rules, interesting and informative as always. I'm kind of late to the party for Dragonbane as I didn't know about until Free RPG day when I got the QSR. I ran it for my family and we had so much fun! Then I learned that there are solo rules as well, I was sold and got the boxed set. Your review confirmed my decision.
The solo rules for this game are very good. Plus the rollable tables are so detailed in what happens, leaving little room for interpretation, that the game feels like a railroad.
Great video! I just recently picked up the quick-start guide and didn't realize there were solo rules that came in the starter set. I think I might have to end up getting the full version of this sometime soon
Thanks for reviewing this! I'm looking forward to playing it solo. To somewhat address the lack of flavor and mechanical impact of the treasure items, e.g. the rings at the 20:47 mark, I'm thinking it could be neat to use a 3rd party resource to fill in the blanks. For the rings, something like Madeline Hale's Arcane Artifacts & Curious Curios' jewelry section could help add some flavor. The actual mechanical effect would still need to be figured out, though. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts about how they might solve that without it potentially breaking the game by being overpowered. Maybe just referencing the Dragonbane Rulebook's Gear section and using a listed effect for a similar item could work. Thanks for all of your videos and your wonderful Solo Game Masters Guide! They have really inspired me and helped.
Yes your suggestion of the Hale book (which I know and own), is right on target. & thx for the kind words about my book. I’m glad you are finding it of use.
I agree that the treasure cards are little more than random amounts of money. The adventure in the boxed set has treasures that to a bit more, including an item key to the adventure, but not on the D&D level overall. Think of the treasure cards as random stuff found. If you're creating your own adventure, also place bigger stuff including magic items and spell tomes then use cards when nothing specific comes to mind.
Just got the quick start guide! Looking forward to reading it! I really like what is available with the solo rules in the box set. I have been struggling to find role tables like those. I made my own, but haven't used then yet.
I have the PDF of this game, but I think I’m going to have to go for the physical. I love these tables they could be used for so many other games as well, especially that enemy attack table!!! Also, there is a great physical deck from dungeons and dragons that has all kinds of treasures that have physical effects on the game. These could be modified based on whatever fantasy RPG you’re playing, highly recommend it.
Very well done. I was given this box set for my birthday. I love solo play so I watched your video for clarification and got it! I can see what you mean about the treasure cards not having an in game purpose. I was thinking that maybe for solo play It should be left open to be filled in by the random table results.
That’s an interesting idea for the treasure cards. To me they just felt a little unfinished but I tend to be biased against treasure whose only use is for the monetary value. I hope you enjoy the box set.
That heroic ability where you get a reroll without a condition costs 3 willpower to use, so you would definitely wait to see if you failed before using it.
Have become my favorite ttrpg! Its RIPE for homebrewing. Im alredy gonna make 9 sub types/ colors/ metals/ gems even of the standard dragon. New breath attacks etc. Have the D&D dragons be put to shame... a bit 😂 And also official stuff like packs of physical colored/ uncolored standees, pre painted+unpainted minis, more colored dices, physical map packs with 5x5 feet/ 2x2 m squares etc Sure DnD have the wealth of structure for classes/ races/ species/ spells/ draconic races and familiar worlds, Pathfinder have the wealth of options and more combat options. Dragonbane got an actual deep combat, very homely, mysterious yet brutal and darkly humourous folk tale style in which I as ethnic norwegian love. So thanks Frie Ligan / Free League, the D.B creators and the illustrators and artists like Johann Egerkrans.🤘👏🍺🍗🍊🍆🥦
Another money-grab product. All these "solo" releases are nothing more than rehashed stuff for dollar bills. All is needed for solo play is one solid rulebook, some oracles/descriptive words/symbols to inspire the imagination. Creativity and one's own mind is key to solo RPG.
@@GeekGamers01 Yes, utilities can indeed be found in any solo material but how many resources does one truly need in order to play and ultimately enjoy oneself? Cleary at this point there is a trend for these companies to take advantage of the "solo rpg" movement to re-release games with such marketing gimmick in mind.
@@surtalogi99 If you’ve watched my channel you know that I don’t think it takes many resources to do solo RPG but not everyone is so comfortable and personally I appreciate the inclusion of rules-specific tables because I think it brings new soloists into this area of the hobby.
I agree for those that have many rulebooks on their shelf. How many versions of a d20 system does one need? But for those just getting started, looking for everything you need in one box, it may not be a bad way to go.
The best solo rules by Free League out of all their attempts (T2K, One Ring, Forbidden Lands are quite half baked) Free League is slowly getting there regarding making their game Solo friendly out of the box. I also find the Adventure sites quite solo frienly with some simple procedure. The color coded name for traps / surprise means player can just skip reading them and only trigger / read them when they failed a roll etc.
It's still paint by the numbers with only a set amount of specific things happening based on your roll. Best way to use it is to incorporate Mythic to have a truly open world game.

Free League is the new standard. The King has died.
Great review.
By the King, do you mean 5E?
Yes. They killed it.@@buddhawasright
Gorgeous game. Free League makes some amazing games. No 1 RPG company by a long way.
Word
Absolutely

We've been waiting for this too. Your view on this game has been high on my list of must watch youtube for a while now.

*are not very good. Stupid speak to text.
Great video. Such a great and fun game. I started my own solo story as soon as I received the box.

The Core Rules Boxed Set is well worth it - So many extra goodies are in it - Cards, maps, standees. Amazing set🥰
That looks great! Thanks for the video.
I really enjoyed this episode, Geek Gamers. It is really fascinating how you tailor a product to fit your solo role-playing needs. Thank you.
Thank you for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the review! I just pre-ordered. Looks like it will be a neat game. I like that it addresses the solo aspect.

@GeekGamers01 do you know of any non-jounaling systems that make use of a full Tarrot card set?

Off the top of my head, no, but I suspect there are some. Will need to think more about that or maybe others will chime in.

Awesome!
I already have more games than I can play, but I've been so tempted to get this for the at alone.

Yes. A valid point already noted. I should have mentioned that in the vid.

I was about to get the game but then I saw Donald Duck.... Great video anyway... as usual!!!
You sure its donald duck? It might be darkwing instead XD

We can disagree about the utility of the solo booklet but I’m not sure how it is a money grab when it is part of the main set.

I’d differ with you about Forbidden Lands, which I think offers more robust solo support but Dragonbane is still great
