"Apparently it was too hard for us Americans" isn't a fair characterization of the situation, I think. It was too hard for an American audience who was still pretty fresh out of the crash of 1983; Nintendo wanted to protect their franchise's chances in the new market, and the American branch of Nintendo was worried that this game - which was not only hard to the point of being unfair at times, but also looked and played very similar to SMB1 - would sell poorly and lower consumer confidence in the American market. They wanted something that would be more likely to be successful, and so Doki Doki Panic was reskinned and improved and released in America as SMB2.

To be serious, the "Lost Levels" are even today hard as Hell.
This is some kind of Kaizo Mario 1.

Does anyone know the name of the man in the black jacket next to cak? He's in a lot of these older GDQ marathon runs I love watching but I've never heard his name mentioned.

The commentator in the black shirt with the green splotches? Aleck47, he did a Sonic 2 coop run in this very GDQ.
      Hope this helps!
