From my experience playing my Tom Bombadil deck, people hate it cause most of the good saga's have control affects on them. So Tom Bombadil decks tend to inadvertently become pretty controlling.
Last night the Tom Bom player made the other 2 players at my table scoop turn 5!
Yeah lots of sagas are either board wipes or removal so its annoying to play with especially being in 5 colors where you can recur the controlling sagas and use read ahead stuff from doctor who. Def been looped by a phyrexian scriptures 3x and that game lasted way too long. Also tom has no actual win con. Just cool sagas that provide value with no way to actually kill people.
I'm not sure it's just the control factor. Once Tom hits the table it's like having to sit through a non-deterministic combo deck every turn so sometimes people scoop just to not have to dit through a few turns of " did I flip the correct saga off of Tom to win? No. But there go everyone's lands I guess." It's not even salt inducing- just kinda boring to sit through. I actually was gathering together sagas to build one myself but decided against having two of those possibly in the pod at the same time.
It's also just so slow and durdly. The turns take forever
I play it and 100% of the hate comes from randomly rolling into board wipe sagas again and again, people hate losing their board and you keeping your commander. There *are* ways of winning (Smaug/Clockspinning infinite loop) but it's like a Superfriends deck in that it takes a while to find and go through the motions so people find it boring. I don't bother explaining the sagas every time i tick down, I expect people to read the card and remember it.
you don't even need mirror box for etali. His copies still etb, they just don't stick around. That etb on it's own is strong enough to justify killing his clones off.
I think the biggest problem with Tom Bombadil decks is that they are soooo slow. The player has to down tick everything which takes a second explain what each mode does. It doesn't seem like much but it adds alot of extra time to the game

Yea I CBA to know what my opponents 3 different sagas do, that's like 9 different things that I ain't got time to read.
Reading the board state is also exhausting. Like I can glance at a Priest of Titania or a Monastery Swiftspear and know what it's going to do.
Sagas require taking note of which step they're in and remembering what that specific step does _and_ what the next step is.
My vote was for Sauron, the Dark Lord (because it's probably in poor taste not to hate the king of all evil) but if it were possible to vote for him, I'd be giving everyone who voted for Krenko Mob Boss a stern talking to.

Dr Who was giant win for people who know the show, and the effects are just the right side of obscure to be fun without being OP or omnipresent. That and Warhammer have proven to me that UB can work.
If someone doesn't like reading complex effects on cards I honestly don't know why they're playing MTG.
the real problem with universes beyond outside the secret lairs is the fact that wotc doesn't own those IP so they can't necessarily reprint the cards in the future and universes beyond could effectively be a big new reserve list. they've done universes within versions of mechanically unique secret lair cards but have made no indication they will do this for any cards from precons or full sets and the massive number of cards makes it basically impossible in the first place.

@@matusalmasi274 If Infect/Toxic is my plan, there are way better options imo. Hell I’d rather just play og Atraxa for access to Blue and immediate counters (not to mention more per turn with 3 opponents), or Skittles for huge hasty infect swings.

I played Ixhel and it was hated in my playgroup after they got 3 poison counters. They dont want me to get a hold of their card. I played Ixhel for 3 months and i was the target almost very game. 😂😂😂 Fun times.

Nobody I've played with has hated on the Doctor Who cards. I finally got to try out the Thirteenth Doctor precon on Wednesday and nobody complained about any of the cards.
The hate is mostly against the ip, so if the people you play against dont care thats that.
@Shimatzu95 I suppose. I haven't actually met anyone in person who has been upset about the UB sets. Generally the people I've spoken to have been pretty excited about them.
Sauron is so cool the only salty thing about him is the ward cost. One of my favorite commanders in a long time.
I can imagine Nine Finger Keene from Baldurs Gate set would be the same, as he's got Ward 9. So could probably feel a bit rough for people
The ward cost is the lynchpin for me. His effects are all great and i get the flavor of the ward cost but its to much. Remove the ward and its still a incredibly powerful commander to run. Personally ward is a mechanic that runs the fine line of fine and good to utterly dumb depending on the cost. Whoever designed him and a few others on the list needs to not be allowed to design cards for a while until they learn balance.
It cost 6 mana. We are in the Universes Beyond and power creep era. A 6cmc three colour commander from an UB set should be, at least, powerful. It's true that Sauron is a Powerhouse by itself, because paying the ward hurt, but getting countered after that is awful. But the game is like that nowadays so we can't do anything
@@aclevername7613 Everyone complains about the ward but all you need to do is play another LOTR deck or include a few tempt cards or have graveyard recursion or disposable ETB legendaries. Only 1 of my decks has none of these, most have many of them. Odds are, soneone at the table can shut it down and after 2 removals, he really isn't worth returning. Like 40 of the top 50 commanders you can get out on T2-3 with lightning greaves which is usually much much worse.
@@CharlesNelson303 No the ward is just horrid. I am fine with ward but I feel like ward that makes it so I have to pay two cards to remove your one is incredibly powerful in itself and should not be ward for a card that overpowered.

I run Atraxa, Grand Unifier in my LGS's FNM EDH tournament. Her etb allows the controler to choose up to 1 card for each type. I usually renege on a card type if it wont help my game plan in the moment. Usually, time she hits the board, I just need one card to end the game, be it a stax piece counterspell, or the last piece of my Rube Goldberg Machine that ends the game.
Also, 7/7 is used a lot on Legendary creatires, because of the original EDH format where 3 unblocked, unmodified hits from any one of the namesake Elder Dragons eliminates you.
Isnt sauron just a really epic commander? I think they did everything right there
I think a lot of LotR commanders didn't really capture the flavor of the characters, but this one nailed it. He really does feel like a raid boss.
Interesting list. Cards like Sauron, Bombadil, Elesh Norn, Atraxa, and Etalia are too powerful. Telepathy is a good enchantment to use with Talion, The Kindly Lord. Thank you Mia and Beezy for the video.
I run Rebuild the City in my windgrace deck. 4 or more field of the deads are pretty great. I won the last game I played by targetting Valakut while I had Dryad of Ilysian Grove on the field. Jund lands is great.

I ended up converting my etali deck into a cedh deck so it doesn't get played unless everybody is playing really high powered stuff

Just built a 50$ budget version of etali with a play from exile theme. Didn’t realize it was so hated lol.
Same with atraxa, built mine as a phyrexian tribal and ran as many praetors as I could. 50 creatures and the only non phyrexian related card was smothering tithe because the deck is so mana intensive. The other til was to run as many phyrexian text cards as possible. The only one I don’t have is mental misstep because I can’t find one
Ixhel in my Doran deck has been great; effectively a 4 CC Serra Angel with Toxic 2 and that ability is just great.
- Talion deck: Add all the cards that allow you to make non-legendary copies of Talion... now Talion will activate on a bunch of spells.
- Tenth Doctor: Yeah that deck is all over the place I changed mine to the Ninth Doctor and focused more on Upkeep triggers, super fun.
- I am glad that the Sixth Doctor/Romana 2 is under the radar, the things that deck has copied. Storytime of last FNM: I had a mana dork out, Romana 2 and Intruder Alarm. My opponents did not realize my combo was ON, so on my second opponents upkeep trigger of their Court of Embereth and they created a lowly 3/1 Red Knight token I proceeded to make an infinite army of Red 3/1 Knight tokens.
I find that since the deck is Bant (Blue,Green, White) makes a great Historic battlecruiser deck with the access to ramp, card draw, giant creatures, protection it tends to be quite hard to actually deal with my commanders. One of the silliest win cons in the deck is to use my pet card, God-Pharaohs Statue and make Non legendary token copies; I've had up to 4 in a game making my opponents spells cost an extra 8 and they took 4 damage on my end step or the time I made 3 ELesh Norn Grand Cenobite's and blanketed the board in an oppressive -6-6 to my opponents stuff and +6+6 to mine. LOL We jokingly call the Sixth Doctor the ''fixed'' Miirym :P
Had the privilege to play against an etali "control deck" for the first time yesterday. I was playing the raven man madness/cycle and the third and last guy in the pod played the grixis amass sauron with a bunch of lotr pet cards. I honestly have no idea how good the sauron deck was because etali just took over the entire game so quickly.
They (etali pilot) played a bunch of cards for free with a huge trample threat as the body, being able to kill someone in three, or one hits if trandformed. So either we die to poison or 3 hits while outvaluing us like crazy or we remove it so they can outvalue us some more. Having access to all the good ramp and fast red mana made it impossible for us to really stop the deck. At some point I mentioned how nuts it is to get 4 cards for 0 cards (because hes a commander) for so little effort. The etali player said it wasn't that good of a commander because it whiffs against other control decks. Ive personally never been in a pod where 3 players play control, its rare for a pod to even have 1 or 2 because most casual players just wanna play cool stuff. After making that point I legitimately got asked something along the lines of: "u ok bro?"/"u mad bro?" Legit warcrame when you ask that in a social setting but I only met the guy that night. so maybe he just took it personally or something lol

Didnt know about this commander since yesterday. Read the card and said it pushed out insane vslue to which the player piloting the deck asked u mad bro.
That dude was definitely being unreasonable. Anyone who says Etali isn't a good commander is lying 😂
@@NitpickingNerds just trying to rate the card that I've seen for the first time like anyone does with any other card. Other people in the comments mention how it hogs the playtime for the whole pod are right too. I was twiddling thumbs for most of that hour and half other than killing etali or trying to reduce his board with stuff like void stone. Even then everything came back so quickly lol. Ah well, this video proved to me my gut instinct was right. If beezy is prepared to scoop that early you know it's too good hahaha. Doesn't strike me as a guy that would scoop early but grind out games to the bitter end. Anyway thanks for the reply. Love what you guys have been doing over the years. Keep it up
There were two Etali decks at my local card shop one was an Etali clone the other was an Etali deck that only used Etali as a finisher guess which one outvalued the other, the Etali clone so yeah anyone saying that Etali isn't a good commander is lying
I play the new Etali as a commander, and I just tell most people "just expect it to be an arch enemy deck". That fool can't whiff and with enough triggers you can actually start seeing synergies develop from what you've stolen off the other people. It's a ridiculously busted card
And that story is why etali is a commander I either will rarely play against and if I do I am killing that deck asap and will never play one on one.
i have a thalia and getrog deck and im constaly trying to get people to just ignore the "creatures and non basic lands enter tapped" line. it just didnt need all that. but for some reason my friends refuse to ignore that line. its weird. im trying to make things easier for them
Spot on, T&G would still be a great card without that line. I'd actually play it just as a FS/DT with sac a creature to attack and forget all about the land shenanigans too. It would still be a great Abzan token commander with just that alone!

Correction, Slimefoot and Squee DOES infinite with a lot of cards. All you need is 1. a sac outlet 2. a way to gain colored mana from creatures dying (i.e. Pitiless Plunderer or Phyrexian Altar) and 3. Something that generates creatures on death (Wurmcoil works but only if you don’t care for netting mana. Mitotic Slime or Sprouting Thrinax work best). Sac S&S, Sprouting Thrinax, and the 3 Saprolings ST makes on death and you’ll have made 5 mana for a 4 mana ability and kept S&S’s Saproling token to rev them. Infinite Mana to play something like Mayhem Devil to close the game. Found this out mid game and it felt like striking gold.
I never understood how people play these boring and lame commanders like Atraxa Grand Unifier. "My commander requires no thought or decision making and I win if it's on the board. So either everyone hates me out of the game with spot removal and counter spells or they lose." How could that be remotely fun to pilot?
I don't think I picked up any new ones I hate this year. My LGS has a lot of regulars who have a nice mix of commanders from various ages of Magic so thankfully I don't see like "Everything is the newest most pushed cards" thankfully.
Ixhel, Zhulodok, Thalia+Gitrog, and Atraxa (though far less than the number of times I've seen first Atraxa this year) are the ones here I've played against. I might not've seen Etali in command zones but in decks he fits and pops up he is a pain in the ass so bad it feels like I sat on a damn cactus.
Question - Etali, Primal Conqueror as Commander that will replace Lathliss in my mono-red dragon deck that includes Sol Ring, etc.
I build a Rukarumel deck and it was fun to play. I got realmbreaker in the 99 so that i could get all slivers out naming Praetors as creature type. But yeah, slivers decks are always being targeted.
Won my commander game tonight using my new talion deck. And yeah its dimir good stuff that clones Talion and or Sheoldred with a mill subtheme.
I play Atraxia as a 4 color angel commander without any blink effects and it’s purposefully build to a lower power than other decks I have. It seems to be received well at my LGS due to this

Etali should have just been mono red. At that point it would have kept much of the ramp in check and limited the recursion effects.
It also should have been, "when Etali enters the battlefield, if you cast it..."
My friend has an Elesh Norn Mom deck, it's pretty funny but I personally like riding it as usually I'm on aristocrats of some kind
Perhaps in the minority I guess, but I quite like all of the Dr. Who stuff. Will eventually pick up all the decks, even started watching the actual TV show. Think they did a good job with those decks, and in particular it really felt like they were super passionate about infusing as many references to the show as they could. I know thoughts on UB are...mixed...but I've yet to really be disappointed by the commander decks. Secret Lairs are whatever and I'm personally super mixed on how LOTR was handled so I'll concede points there.
Ultimately though, I don't care about UB because what I care more about is having more people to play magic with and if UB brings people in to play then fine by me.
I also think they are flavorful and certainly have spot on make up that way, but like with more and more cards these days WOTC added fifteen abilities to every card in the set. It is wordiness to the extreme compiled into entire decks. That’s my beef.
I'll concede that as well! Definitely a trend with a lot of cards recently. I like to think that they just wanted to capture as much flavor as they could within the confines of a magic card, but yeah it gets stressful especially for the Bant Dr Who Deck with all 8 doctors in it...
I ugly cackled loudly when y'all got to Etali, my current pet deck. But I definitely get it especially considering that I created that deck in response to a friend who enjoyed stealing other people's cards via a Grixis deck. Etali doesn't come out too often as a result of the BS but it's still very fun to play.
I just built a Tenth Doctor deck with Rose as his companion. Its been so much fun. Rose gets bullied so hard the second she hits the field.
15:15 Thalia & Git is the only one for me so far. I haven't really had it hated out too much as I keep pointing out that it slows down the other 2 opponents from doing their shenanigans.

That hypothetical Zhulodok player deserves to be punished for being stupid enough to run a mana rock that does literally nothing for them (Commander's Sphere, like Command Tower and Arcane Signet, will not produce mana if your commander has no color identity).
At least Sauron doesn’t make individual orc tokens that you can stockpile and go super wide with, I feel like the army is more manageable
Personally I thought the Doctor who set was really weak so I don’t care to play against 1. If anything I think they are interesting
I would personally love to see a universes beyond in the dark souls/elden ring theme, I feel like there’s a lot of fantasy aspects and magic in the games that would work well in a magic deck

Played against the eldrazi deck, guy played something huge and cascaded into all is dust. Pretty brutal.
After Atraxa I was really struggling to guess who would be first. Ofc I wouldn't guess it because I am the guy playing the Etali deck 😂😂

I play etali as well, we wouldn't consider it because we are arch-nemesis to the board as soon as we announce him as commander. I love playing it in certain pods though because it does become a survival test for me as a player
I use rukarumel as a rebel tribal commander. Turn every creative in your library into a rebel and tutor any creature you want from your library with a rebel.
Zhuldok forces you to removal for it on like turn 4 because it’s like all mana rocks and bombs

Was she the issue? Absolutely not, the Jetmir I revealed with Kolvori at the end of the person before me's end step was.
I forgot about slimefoot and squee probably because I haven’t played against it but definitely seems pretty obnoxious
16:17 When it comes to Tom Bombadil: I think people hate him because playing against Sagas is insanely annoying. I have played against Tom Bombadil once and I don't want to experience it ever again. Getting 10 different triggers at the beginning of every turn and tracking the ones that will trigger next turn is just terrible. And what's most important is that it's insanely time consuming. On paper Sagas decks are fun, but in practice? They are opposite of it.
I think for sauron a more colored or higher mana cost would have been appropriate. Beeing able to cast this on like turn 2 or 3 with dark ritual mana vault sol ring.... Whatever of those... Nahh... The abilities feel like sauron... But they are far undercosted

Haven't encountered Tom Bombadil, but have heard the time intensive nature of layering and working through sagas make it play like super friends and often be guilty of taking long turns.
Not sure how accurate that criticism is, but if true can sympathize with the complaint.

I find it funny that you're complaining that cards are legendary instead of non-legendary. Legendary was originally a debuff to counter strong abilities. Its weird to hear people saying they should NERF legendary creatures. Sure commander changes things, but theres more than commander when legendaries are made. Im not much older than you, but man I feel old when you say things like this.

Nobody voted Ixhel cause she’s mid. Poison in general is a weak mechanic in commander. Her card stealing ability also takes forever to turn on and in the grand scheme of things doesn’t do much.

If you see Etali in the command zone you can remove your gloves and begin to slap the player that brought it until they leave or take their deck apart and build something not absolutely uninspired that exists only to cheese free wins at casual tables because it's not salty unless it's blue, right?
When I die I hope I'm reborn as a counter spell that is automatically cast whenever anyone plays this kind of OP junk, and I'll finally be free.
I love Mommy Norn in the 99. I hate her as a commander. She’s just a bit too oppressive to have consistent access, you should need to work for it.

Also wotc: new atraxa is fine and balanced and needs no once per turn.
Card is so crazy its being ran in every format with multiple copies bc killing one for your atraxas to the legend rule to draw 7 more cards and still have a 7/7 with 4 keywords is a thing.
My friend plays Sauron I've never been salty about it, cause it's freaking SAURON. It feels on point to the lore, plus for 6 mana as a commander, that's a lot. The whole table kind of has to band together against the Evil and makes for the most epic of battles. Definitely not hated at all.
I love how Sauron, the dark lord, is a wizard that can box lol.
I built the new etali bc I pulled one in draft and thought it would be a fun turn-your-brain-off time… The deck is miserable! Way too much value, the stack is always ginormous and I feel like such a turn hog playing it. Would not recommend!
I did the exact same thing. It looked fun but after playing it a few times I could tell how annoyed the table got every time I copied, blinked and recast it.

Crazy that we had an eminence commander this year and it didn’t crack the list. Though I do think Sidar Jibari isn’t as good as these cards, so glad to see community agrees.
Zulodok isn't that strong in the grand scheme of Commander. Colorless will never be, simply because it lacks all the great options blue, red, or green have (Animar), in addition to all the Devoid Eldrazi. That's not to say Zulodok can't become explosive, but Animar is much stronger for an Eldrazi deck and he's been around since the first official Commander decks.
Artifacts are actually a better build for Zulodok, since there are more accessible ways to reduce the cost of artifacts than there are for Eldrazi (Urza's Incubator and Eye of Ugin are both pricey and have a more limited effect). There are several high-mana cost artifact monsters that are great threats to use in such a deck - Blightsteel Colossus is one, but Cityscape Leveler, Phyrxian Triniform, and Triplicate Titan are good options.
Not sure why talion is here but i agree with both the rest of the list and the (dis)honorable mentions.

Played against the Timey Wimey deck the other night and it was pretty much the same experience as in the video. Player was just doing a load of stuff, cards with a wall of text, rest of us were like "cant be bothered to keep track of this, let us know when you do something that matters"

Some of these hate outs, feel like they re being voted from a meta with minimal interaction. Ramp Ramp Etali, and Ramp Ramp atraxa though, on point, definitely boring and linear gameplay, and really hard to consistently deal with, unless the table gangs them.
Etali number one by a country, no, continental mile. I don't understand the reason this effect was printed ever on a body.
i played against Elesh Norn with my Norin ETB deck. holy sh/t was this 2hours a waste of time
Tom Bombadil creates massive turns of twiddly durdling that if the opponent doesn't know what they are going to do, their turns will be 10 minutes. Had a bombadil deck make a billion pegasus, plan the win, then Bombadil searched out a boardwipe and dragged out the game more. It's miserable to play against.
Technically Morgoth is the big bad; but I love my Sauron deck. It'e great.
I play zhulodok and I'm NOT sorry (always honest in the rule zero tho!)

Yea i detest ixhel. I target the hell out of her when i see shes the commander. That deck is a insta target to me. Personally I am fine with talion. Just due to you gotta know what your opponent is running or a solid idea so you know the number to call. I can see it being hated simply for being the most oppressive color combination. Dimir is never fun to go against. Yea the gorger I can see for on Eldrazi are horrid to go against and just destroy any fun out of games with this trademark ability but its ability is rather limited due to color restriction. Yea i fully agree with sauron. Busted as hell and a instant target for me. The player running him i want to take out asap or simply refuse to play against. Far far to many good abilities. Amass in a multi player game is so stupid but for me the ward is the lynchpin. I do not care if it fits the lore of the char having to sac a legendary artifact or creature just to target that thing is to much. Card is busted period and was a mistake to be made and would need to be nerfed or banned due to how overpowered it is. I agree with araxa it does way to much. Its main ability is fantastic and should not have vigilance, death touch and life link on top of all that. Busted card and horrid card design. Also yea screw etali. Busted as hell and a mistake of a card to be made. A incredible ability that is insanely hard to answer, stealing cards is always a annoyance and sucks to verse a deck based on that, no chance of wiffing by getting a land, exiles all the cards so your opponents are denied them and play any number of them for free. Not just one, which would still be incredibly powerful but still far more fair, but no any amount of them! Card is beyond dumb and stupid. Add in blink effects and you got a very horrid game ahead of you. A commander I personally most likely would not verse even in a four man and never in a one man due to how busted the card is and how misrable it will make the game for me.
