about what comes first the mv or the song, to ian what’s most important is the story he’s telling so he will imagine a character first, what this character is wearing, where they are and then he will imagine what kind of sound will accompany all that image, that’s how he said he makes songs. so. answering any kind of questions abt the video without explaining all the storyline is a bit difficult 😅 but you’re correct, basically the blue eyed character is trying to get that sword (a key) and the black smoke represents another character who’s trying to stop that (he’s also the one narrating + the one with the black wings). ian’s songs and lore are based on his experience with bipolar and DID, which means he plays multiple characters so things like color, makeup, switching between voice tones and shots are the ways we can differentiate them from eo. there’s 3 of them in this mv.
Very cool! I know he incorporates his own experience into the music/videos which I absolutely love. So it sounds like he comes up with the imagery associated with the story, then the sonic concept and develops them both from there probably. Not that there's a wrong way of course but I was curious about his specific process. Thank you so much for sharing!
@@ChainReactionsChannel As an addition to this, all of these three characters were all there from the very first album, even though we didn't realise at the time - if you go back through the first videos you can see hints of them/references to them (even followers of the lore only found this out very recently). If you rewatch his videos after figuring out the basicas of the lore then you start to realise even more, which raises more questions which necessitates another rewatch, which leads to other small details being noticed and it goes on and on... This song kinda bridges the gap between the storyline in Dear Insanity and the next album which will revolve around this 'new' (kinda) character. He did mention there's actually more (side?) characters that will become more apparent in the next album - kinda like 'The Green' popped up in this one, so we've probably been seeing those too without realising it... The dude has really had all of this planned out from the very start, which is just mind-blowing. If you've ever watched Dark on Netflix his videos give me the same mind-blowing, puzzle-solving, dopamine seeking vibes. It's quite the rabbit hole. As a Gen X'er I am absolutely loving it. I miss this from back when you had to buy entire physical albums and they would often tell a story (think Iron Maiden as a good example), it's something more musicians should do imo. As a final aside, Ian has mentioned that he would like to make a film when the story wraps that will kinda explain things fully to everyone, so fingers crossed!
