Many medieval peasants worked on the land and the weather in the UK means most work would be done in the more favourable months ( except for those in charge of animals ). However ,I don`t suppose the work in those fewer days was 9 to 5, they would be expected to get out there early and work till it got dark .
Undoubtedly, Medieval peasants toiled far harder, as all their work was hard manual labour and, indeed, being largely agricultural in nature, would have no fixed working hours. But I don't take this meme as some sort of direct competition of who worked the hardest. If that was the case then, yes, the Medieval peasants easily win. It's more addressing the attitudinal difference that even serfs under the feudal system - barely a notch up from slavery, where the Lord would ransom work from the peasantry through tithe and rent - gave more thought to a healthy work / life balance than we do today. The real underlying difference is that modern employers pay for our time, so therefore try to maximise our productivity within those working hours (a monochronic view). Whereas the Medieval Lord was ransoming results for living space. A more polychronic view that, so long as results are delivered, your time is your own to manage within that space. Although, with house prices and rents locking out the generations after the Baby Boomers from ever owning their own home, we arguably have returned to a neo-feudal system. I don't read it as a "who worked the hardest?" competition, but as more of a philosophical questioning of "is this really how we should be living our lives?" regarding a healthy work / life balance and how much freedom we really have within this modern monochronic system.
That's what alot of us are doing 5 and 6 days a week we're knocking out 50 and 60 hour weeks cheffing. That's a fairly standard week too, it can get alot heavier
Train tickets are bought and then we you are going to get on the train, at a barrier, they check your tickets. But most train stations have machines with barriers these days, and you insert the ticket, it opens the barrier and it then returns your ticket to you.
Alot don't even have barriers, can't even count the amount of times I've got on a train and got off the other end without paying. All the city's have them but towns and smaller bits usually don't, sometimes get the ticket guys on the train but even that's rare
barriers are only in places where people tend not to pay - i.e. larger cities like london, or shit holes like chatham. most train stations in England don't actually have barriers.
