It looks like you need to be there to manually press the camera shutter button, instead of just pressing start and letting the iPad do the rest of the work, so for events how does this work if the station is unmanned?

It’s vertical scaling vs horizontal scaling up. Exactly what you said. It’s an extension of their core biz. Not diversifying to new industry, just new product line vs service
When do they go on sale
Are the employees direct employees or 1099? Or, are the booths rented to each operator?

I'm looking to purchase a photo booth and rent out on weekend as supplemental income. I'm curious, If you could pick 5 or 6 backdrops and themes, what would you chose? What's most popular?
It depends on your audience. The ones that a school would pick are not the same ones a bride would pick. Know who you are selling to and survey them. For example, if you are starting out and doing an event for a friend or relative , ask them which ones they would like.
