Tip for running cables. When you put cables in a hard to access space also put a braided fishing line in. You can use that later to pull through additional wires (with another bit of fishing line)

The price of this air conditioner just dropped to $456 on Ebay! Now you can try it for even cheaper than we bought it for! ❄ www.ebay.com/itm/186455660773

The only thing I could recommend is that anytime you penetrate the exterior wall of a structure, make sure you use a drip loop if the wire is coming from above the hole. No amount of sealant will stop the water from wicking along the lines.

I grew up in the extreme cold, served in the tropics, and live in the desert. On my build the AC and vents were installed day one....er day two, demo day one. In the fall I can use a down comforter, but in Arizona the AC is not optional in summer.

The humidity this July was brutal in NY! It finally broke this weekend which has been a big relief! feels almost cold! lol! But I'm sure were not done with the humidity yet! so I'm happy for you that your ac is working good! I'm sure you'll need it! Does the humidity bother Mateo and Pablo at all? Gotta keep the pups comfy! They're the best and so adorable!!

This video gives me hope! We survived the summer heat by going to the pool and the library, but next year we hope to be AC-equipped.

I was recently discovered these 12/24v mini splits and was curious of how they performed and if they hold up. I’m really happy that I stumbled upon this video. I would absolutely love to see a 6 month or 1 year review of it when that time comes.

You are absolutely right about your box. We tried the same AC in our rig and it was not sufficient to cool. We have 3 slideouts and nearly 200 square feet. That should be fine with 10k btu, but I think they are fibbing on the BTU. Looks like you guys have found the perfect match for your rig. BTW we have a couple of those same fans. They are the best and quietest fans made for rigs IMO.

@19:01 This would be an awesome way to utilize some data logging via a CerboGX, and overlaying current draw, or using some RUUVI's to overlay external, internal, etc to show viewers a real easy pictoral of this project. Nice work, your channel is awesome!

I'm really loving your Unimog build series. Especially Mateo and Pablo are so cute. Your mini split AC build and testing was interesting and successful. I've been considering using a desiccant dehumidifier with AC if I ever have an ex-military unimog like you guys someday. Inverter AC blow humid air when they reach their target temperature and there is a risk of black mildew. So a desiccant dehumidifier without a compressor would be quiet, efficient and work well in extreme temperatures. If there is good airflow including furniture, it can help prevent mildew and moisture from overheating the batteries and electrical components, and condensation and thermal bridges on the subframe floor and panel frame. And in some areas of NA, UK and Northern Europe where turbulence is present, a humidifier would be necessary. If you can’t leave the cabin, an air purifier and sensor from IKEA would make van life more pleasant.
And while these may or may not be feasible ideas, I have also thought about pumping greywater to remove dust from the solar panels for better efficiency and cooling. While driving, I have also thought about air cooling with cheap china LED aluminum heat sink panels underneath the solar panels, or for more efficient and versatile cooling scenarios, installing temperature sensors, fans, coolant and pumps and radiators on top of the cab like the MO-RA3 water cooling system from PC and automating them with Aquacomputer's OCTO/QUADRO. If these ideas actually work, I would be honored if you could use your talents to make them happen. Thanks for sharing your awesome adventures!

Looks possible to use flexible hose on the air handler to duct the air where needed ? Good to see more installs / reviews of these mini splits . For a grand (or lest on sale) Amazon now has a few options for an under mount mini split . Available in 12 , 24 and 48 volt with inverters to control fan and compressor speed , but at this price point I’m waiting to see some reviews and installs before deciding what goes on my van .

Have you considered insalling an ERV air exchanger? That way you can still get filtered fresh air without losing cooling or heating.

We have a Treeligo 12v mini-split in our ambo as well. Fortunately it worked from the start (lol). I’m sure you know, but running it while you drive helps so you don’t have to cool the box every time you stop helps…also you can get dripping condensation off the lines leading into condenser inside, so keep an eye on potential issues that might cause behind your cabinets. (We mounted ours above our side entry door so it’s not a big issue)

I just added a similar unit to the cab of my LMTV (US military truck, similar to the Mog). Just wondering if you guys looked into these. They are way cheaper, have CTIS, automatic transmission and replacing the hubs with ecohubs, I can do 70mph +. Have fun out there! Maybe we'll see you you on the west coast sometime?

Right after you turned it on the first time, I heard a 60 cycle hum for a second or so. Could be a start capacitor or locked compressor, or a pressure sensor. You were so fortunate to get a new one, I am totally amazed as you may have been scammed with a bad unit the first time. I totally avoid eBay for anything mechanical and pay more at Amazon and there I try to avoid third party sellers for mechanical items. Based on experience in my camper, as rough as your rig rides, I would bungee the fan to secure it when driving or it will all be flopping around after a couple months of driving.

I was really impressed by the unit and by your install, I'm building a box truck, I plan to have one large opening on the roof, about 2' x 3' large enough to access with my fat ass and clean the solar panels, I need to review your build if I can to learn more about the 24 volt stuff, I was thinking about putting a 5,000 watt stand alone system in for power, that way I shouldn't have to build a unit with all the stuff in one it seems like a nicer way to go and for about $5,000 seems like less headaches.. anyway thanks for sharing, nice job

Congrats on your efficiency success, which is definitely on the back of your all-things-covered insulation principles.
As you say, the DC unit eliminates all the conversion losses and keeps things simpler, which is always good.
Having reserves of solar & batteries gives peace of mind, which is paramount for remote travelling.
Others may not be as lucky if they've skimped on their insulation package. The unit will run harder and longer, stressing the power supply & lowering service life.
I respect that you didn't use your UA-cam cred to get your unit for free but gave it a good wrap.
By contrast, an attractive young single female UA-camr (not naming) thought she'd fixed her hot weather woes by buying a white van & didn't install insulation. Last I saw, she was given a split unit as a promo. 😡

Hey Y'all! Cool! We went with a Pioneer 12k Btu unit, around 1200 bucks if I Remember correctly. With 800w of solar and 300ah of battleborns, it can't run all day, only 6-7 hours in full sun starting with full charge. We are using the inverter, some losses there. Max watt consumption around 1500w, while cooling, less than that when running heat. Serenity is one ton shuttle. This is 3rd year running the unit, overall happy with it. Is Foreman Mateo and assistant approving?

To coin the phrase, you get what you pay for, I understand why you all went the route that you went, but when it comes to something like heat and or air conditioning, don’t skimp on it pay the price cry for about a day and then you’ll be happy the rest of the time you’ll be completely glad ya did 😊
