Nimble Boats | The Rare Pocket Trawler Ahead of its Time

- Howdy guys and gals, I came across another Nomad a couple months ago here in Florida, she's in rough shape, but nothing a little effort and elbow grease can't fix. In this video we get the 1st layer of grime off her and install an outboard on her transom. I'll keep posting videos of the project as I get to it.
For those interested, yes this boat is for sale. It's now located at my home in Minnesota. As much as I love the Nimbles, I have too many boats and the Vagabond is the keeper. There seems to be way more people looking for a Nomad than available. The price will continue to go up as I work on it and spring comes. If you're up to a project, this would probably be the best deal you'll ever find on one anymore.

I'm a newbie and appreciate the background stories.
Great Deals on anything just make my day.
Me too ;) they're coming less and less. The first nomad I found and bought (2017) I paid 4700 bucks. With a low hour Honda!
You're a lucky man to have a welding buddy like that, and working for him to pay the way. So you say you are going to keep something... probably have it sold before the video comes out!
I do feel very blessed in that regard. More than o deserve! ;)
I think the nomads are my favorite boats. There is a guy on UA-cam that did a video on one named the Vamoose which really turned me onto the nomad. I think your plan is great.
I've seen that video. They are pretty cool boats. I've been in love with the Nimbles for years ;)
You nave a real nose for boats and scooter deals.
The beagle is mu secret weapon...she sniffs them out ;)
Thanks for the close ups, Benton! I see now how it mounts, and is built. If only I could weld aluminum.....I can build that out of steel, but...... Keep the NOMAD!
I'd like to, but it's hard to keep up on all the boats and motors and stuff. I guess I'll see if someone comes along ;) might keep by default
I second that. Keep it and over to The Bahamas.
Great video my man. Another cool craft you are putting together there. Those are really classic boats. Hope everything thing goes well for you and Wavy. Take care 👍
hello from the cool Ozarks Brenton! What a great find! dont see any nimbals on the lakes here. its great to have spare boats and transportation. thats why i keep rvs and boats in different places to pick up and go without towing and saves a ton of fuel and insurance $$$.looking forward of your review on your completed parts of your boat. great to have a craftsman available ! tightlines Brenton!
She's going to look good, love to have one fully electric, near silent, unlimited range, no fuel!
Me too! Electric outboard and solar would be the ticket on that. Check out "finding simon"
Dang Brenton,I do love the Nimble Nomad for sure. I don't blame you for keeping it. I wish I had jumped sooner but life circumstances just don't coincide at the moment. She's already a beauty and going to be spectacular when you get finished!
I'm gonna sell it! I've got too many boats;)
Yeah those are nice boats shallow draft fantastic for the keys and Bahamas.
Absolutely. Several folks have taken them to the Bahamas
Pocket trawler for a pocket bea-gurl. 🥰name her "Waveys Gravy Boat"
Sailing the seas of Gravey ;)
Great video Brenton! You have great taste in boats. Keep up the good work. I have always found it good to have a friend that can weld aluminum. Thanks!
All hail the Alumni-natti! Lol ;) Thanks man. I love just putting around.
id love to see a boat tour!
Coming up! ,)
Nice catch ....
Thanks man ;)
Sounds like a plan, Buddy. My plans are on hold until someone can afford to buy my house. I hope you have a Vagabond on the market when I'm ready.
Don't hold off too long...lots of forces at work trying to take away our freedoms to roam. Just sayn:(
Very cool 👍
Thanks man ;)
I know your buddy! He helped me with the cast iron swing keel shoes on my Chrysler C26. Difficult task removing frozen sheared off bolts. He was reasonable with his charges.
He's always more than fair. Time to hit the waterways on the super shanty if you ask me ;)
I want one! I live in Brevard. I need to find one. I love the way they look.

Prepping the nomad for nomadic life
I'm already pretty much there. Too much stuff gets in the way of the nomadic life though.
@@backwatersandbackroads I know what you mean the more I wish to be a nomad the more stuff I aquire to keep me at home ...crazy !!
Flipping brilliant man!
Love it…I know you kind of shun the bigger trawler but I picked mine up for a crazy good price..and I know there is more expense for a bigger boat but I think (hope at least) if I live on mine it may be comparable (on some scale?lol) to having more than one? I keep learning (a lot from your channel thanks!!!..and fun to watch)
Question...I have seen these Nomads on the Great Loop and have always wondered...what happens when you catch a wave and flood the forward cockpit? On our Loop, we ran into these kind of conditions unavoidably a few times in our Ranger 25 and got me to wondering....keep up the great videos.
There are cockpit scuppers on front and rear cockpits that drain just fine. They have one way valves so water goes out easily without coming in. One on each side of the front drains well and the rears do a good job as seen in the pressure washing. The front outside flapper valves can be replaced easily and the rear scuppers can be bought from west marine or Amazon pretty cheaply as they are not native to Nimbles (common parts.)
Yes, more/less what grouch said ;) the sides of the Nomad are extremely high (makes it a hard boat to get in and out of) honestly, I think the front could be swamped and it wouldn't sink the boat. Getting the interior swamped might get you in trouble.
@@backwatersandbackroads Thanks for the answers....I always wondered, and now I know! THANKS
Brenton how many projects do you have going now? This boat, your Scamp, your house and ?? The power wash of the Nomad was crazy! You paint the bottom portion (hull?) and it will look brand new! Hope the interior is still in good shape! You say you wont sell it but you will. 🤭
I definitely have too many projects Goldie. I'm trying to stop taking on more and dealing with the ones I have. The Scamp will get done and sold this summer;)
Title suggestion ...prepping the off grid machine .
Watching your video suggestions. I'm trying to afford a channel audit.
Hello! I'm new to your videos. Alone in Alaska spoke of you on her videos soooo I decided to check you out 😃
She did?! Wow. ;) welcome. Goldie is an inspiration
I have seen you get in to some very shallow conditions where a poling platform could be very handy. It could prevent you from having to get in the water and pull.
If you leave a boat in Fla it could pay for itself in fuel savings in a few years by not having to pull one back and forth. As long as you don't have to pay storage. But leaving it in the care of a master aluminum welder might not be a bad idea. He worked wonders on your other one.
I'm curious to see if I can pole the vagabond around in shallow. I need to find one of those poles.
Sweet! Cleaned up nice.
If Gas goes over $20.00 a gallon, I'm expecting to see some oar locks somewhere? p.s. Great vid/yer makin us drool with anticipation/love the Pirate Music in the background!
20 bucks a gallon. Ouch. The Hubbards wandered the rivers before the age of internal combustion...might go back to that. Who wants to stay home?!
@@backwatersandbackroads Even the Barges had sails!
Score!
Yeah! ;)
I like that
Thanks man. Special boats made right in Florida
Keep her and call her the Gravy Boat.
Too many boats man...the vagabond wins out for Nimble keeper.
looks like a looper boat
Exactly! ;)
I'm seeing your thinking selling again, I'm still interested and would like to see pictures.
You can email me if you're interested. I include it in the descriptions of my videos.
I need to find a Nomad. Hard to find in Canada.
Come buy this one. It's in Minnesota
😊
I’d be interested in purchasing 🤷🏻
Email me if interested. In description of video.
Every Nimble I've ever seen has dark-colored paint and it's always terribly oxidized with that white chalky residue. Unless there are better paints today than they used when those were made, go with white. Just a suggestion from a random guy on the internet.
Yes it's true, the green Nimble used on 99% of their boats oxidized badly. I like it myself (Patina)
Would you consider renting it out when your not using it? Looks interesting.
Pure blood (good name) the problem is it would then have to be insured...and that's big bucks. People would inevitably run it into stuff and like renting a house or car...becomes a lose more than a gain. There are folks who rent them on the Erie canal.
@@backwatersandbackroads yeah, your right . To much of a " job" to get involved in rental. I don't blame you.
If you run across another boat like that CHEAP let me know please im in Minnesota North of Anoka and have trailers and outboards !
Cheap? There doesn't seem to be a lot of cheap trailerable trawlers around anymore. A nomad without a trailer did just sell down in Florida this summer for 5k. That was an amazing deal
Do not sell either one of those nimbles they suit your life style very well one here one in the up for cruising the barge to live on there and the Hewes for going to the Apostle islands yoi will be a blessed man my friend by the way i repeat i still have the depth sounder and the led cabin lites and they are still in the box brand new the lites thst is the sounder is older but a hummingbird and works well
Let me know
I've thought those exact things Dave. The vagabond and the nomad sort of cover the same territory...that's the one hiccup
@@backwatersandbackroads but ine is here the other there just jump in the truck and come on down no stress of having to pull it all the way down
@@davelawrence6777 the problem like you mentioned is storage during the off season. Not cheap! :(
What happened to the little burro camper trailer you had?, The Nomad has an active Facebook group.
Oh all the fiberglass campers I've found have been sold except for a scamp I picked up last year. They're also gotten hard to find
Cheap and boat dont mix, buddy. You'll learn...
Learn what? I've been messing with boats for years. Might want to know what you're talking about before opening mouth. You'll learn...
Hello Brenton, what is the hull number or your Nomad?
I'm going to post that as soon as I get the title issue worked out. Don't want to jinx it ;)
So you live on a barge on the river? How is that ?
It's awesome. God blessed me last summer with a piece of river property on the Ontonagon river.
@@backwatersandbackroads
What kind of barge that you live on ? Like yo try to find me one.
Like to buy one of your boats and or trade you one of my 3 Yamaha jet skies
Can that 40 get the boat up on plane?
No they are a displacement boat.
The Nimbles are non planing hulls. If you go much past hull speed, they just squat or plow. Designed to go slow...around 5-8 mph
Did you sell the nomad yet? I’d be interested in buying!
A deposit was made on it last week. Took longer to sell than I expected actually, but it was winter and I wasn't trying very hard
@@backwatersandbackroads may I ask what your asking price was? What a neat boat!
@@7drtydog8 I sold it for $11.5k which as far as I can tell is the best deal on a nomad left in the country. They only built approx 140 of them and they've only gotten more desirable since then. This one is a project, but nothing a decently skilled person can handle. I wish I had 10 more! ;)
@@backwatersandbackroads thank you
@backwatersandbackroads glad you gave your barge the priority.
Fix it up rent it out .. 300$ a week
I repeat if you sell that othet nimble you are going to seriously regret it think long and hard sell the Hewes if necessary keep one here and one there yeah yeah i know storage figure it out
Too many boats Dave! ;)
