Amy Beach was one of the first successful American composers and one of the first important women composers of the 20th century. She was the only female member of the Second New England school (and perhaps the most well known too,) which featured other composers such as John Knowles Paine, Arthur Foote, George Chadwick, Edward MacDowell, and Horatio Parker.
These Theme and Variations were written in 1916 and are composed in a late romantic style. Reminiscent of composers such as Rachmaninoff, Brahms and Grieg. I'm reminded of Ravel's String Quartet at moments too and there seems to be a Debussy influence (possibly Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune) in the solo 9/8 flute theme.
I do not own the sheet music or the audio.
The viola sounds like a cello. I love it!
Sublime. Thank you, and hat tip to the performers.
