Dame Gracie Fields is the greatest British entertainer. She raised millions of pounds for the war effort and entertained troops in France Egypt and Burma also workers in the munition factories. I was in the audience when she sang. Take me to your heart again it was very emotional. Creating Gracie a Dame was an honour that was long overdue.
Lots of myths about Gracie Fields during the war. It is actually recorded that she went to the most dangerous parts to sing and was not a traitor as so often depicted.
Too bad PBS in America didn't show this, except that most Americans have never heard of Fields, in spite of her wide popularity in the US in the 40s and 50s(When she signed in as the Mystery Guest on US "What's My Line", there was thunderous applause).

I don't know who Gracie Fields is ( was), I'll do some research, but the music is 'la vie en rose' by Edith Piaf.

Can't believe that Gracie was booed off Stage in my home town of Ashington when she played there in the local Cinema...How ignorant of them..😪
The British public turned against her because she married an Italian. Italy were one of the Axis powers in WW2 (before they changed sides)
