I mean, he did send you a “box set”. 😂 I’m glad you got your money back Matt, thanks for looking out for the vinyl buying community!
Yeah a boxed set a set of boxes ------------------- I buy 99.9% of my records from Goodwill I have it in my hand I can see the condition and if it's good --I buy it
LMAO
LOL
This is insane. I can’t believe the lengths people will go to in order to scam someone for money. So glad you got your money back!
Thanks Caroline, me too.
And on the bright side, free boxes!
Doesn’t sound like a lot of work for $200 to me. A fake profile, a phony conversation for a few days and send a fake parcel? That’s not a lot of work at all. Also remember that $200 in other countries can actually be quite a bit of money.
What's insane is people f'ing around with records in this day and age.
you should pay more attention to US politics.
The most shocking thing to me about this situation is someone paying $200 for something by The Weeknd.
Zing!
Yup
This gave me a good laugh
He was probably going to flip it.
i thought that was funny $200 for the weekend lol
buying a two hundred dollar set from a 0 feedback is just asking for trouble.
Everyone has to start somewhere.I have sold a few items on discogs and have some rare vinyl. Why do you assume I want to hurt someone?
Thanks for that, Captain Obvious.
@@brucegelman5582 well... in this case, the person is starting out by selling a underpriced GRAIL by The Weeknd, so it kinda seems weird. If someone were to sell a pretty common $20 vinyl that seems like a reasonable price then it doesn't really sound like trouble at all.
This warning applies to everything. Thanks
People have to start somewhere. Maybe don't go buying like a 2000$ thing from them but give them a chance before you just ignore them because they are new.
This is one reason why I really miss physical storefronts and walk-in shopping. Scamming is so rife now that I've become skeptical about every phone call and every email. It's a sad indictment of the age we live in.
Considering how long I've been buying records online, I've been relatively fortunate so far, but knowing you can report this type of fraud (cyber crime) to the FBI is very comforting. Very helpful and informative. Thanks. 🎼👌
Thanks for sharing Matt. So frustrating to have to spend so much time and energy dealing with scammers. Glad you got your money back though! Cheers
This happened to me this month. It sucks because I’m very new to vinyl and being scammed ruined buying records on the internet. I will stick to physical stores and reputable online stores.
I never buy anything from anyone with zero feedback
If you followed this logic, no one would ever buy or sell anything from/to anyone. Obviously you have to keep your guard up, but honestly, your logic is pretty ridiculous.
@@beyondthegong agree with your logic.
@@beyondthegong it's best to allow risk takers to buy from them and give feedback thus protecting us
@nikto45 totally agree it works both ways and when starting out of course you need someone to take a chance to get going but it just won't be me. I was already burnt on ebay back in the day so lesson learnt.
I tried it on a fp Minor Threat single for $5. Worked out great. I underatand when your getting something for much more money, but I got a great deal.
Dude. I totally appreciate this video. I will be on the lookout from now on. I have seen deals like that with no seller feedback and wondered. Never pulled the trigger thank goodness. This can obviously happen to anyone buying online. Now I know what to expect e.g.. the FBI complaint requirement. Excellent post!
Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience
Thanks for telling us the scammers. Deceitful sellers should be outed.
I’m glad you posted this!
Bless you Matt. You're a good kid. That was my son's name. Thank you for taking the time to help others.
So glad that you got your money back! It's unfortunate that scammers are everywhere. Thank you for the warning and for saying the scammer's user name! Hope this never happens again.
awesome video bro. thank you for the info!
It's so effed up that people like this actually exist..
thanks for the head-up!! Glad it worked out for you
Thank you for this! Great video. It’s disgusting how people make a living out of scamming people.
Yes we all need to be diligent online. Especially during this pandemic where shipping times are already delayed.
My advice to everyone is to keep a record of all your tracking numbers. Make sure the sellers provide one to you. I keep a spreadsheet of everything I order (way too much) which includes the item, the site I order it from, tracking number, and I update it daily with shipment tracking using USPS, so I know it's headed my way. I haven't had too many issues so far.
As far as what Matt went through, good work being diligent, Matt. That's horrible someone would do that. as another user said you now have limited red white and blue colored limited pressing priority boxes to use now!
Only issu I have really had was a seller (whom i've brought from numerous times before) from Chicago shipped me a sealed early 90s LP that I had purchased from him. it was shipped on 4/17/20. It was never scanned and as of last week, sat in pre-shipment status. The Post Office was able to tell me that the mailing label was incorrect as they claim the seller put my name in the address field and part of my address in the "zip" field. as of last week, I opened another case online and come to find out the USPS status is now "Label created not yet in system". the postal service now has no record of my information and only that a tracking label was created. it's almost as if the status went backwards and someone went in and removed my info from that tracking number. I did get my money back and the seller is very responsive...but sealed LPs from the 90s (especially for the low price I paid for it) are irreplacable. somewhat of a scam but maybe not with the seller?
Happy buying!
there is a better way to stop all that tracking and spreadsheet get in car go to store pay with visa or mc and you have record of transaction and product easy peesy :)
Damn! Thanks man for the heads up! I feel like it should be obvious to trust your gut when it comes to “too good to be true” offers, especially when it’s something you’ve been wanting - but I don’t think it may always be so~ Stay Safe out there, collectors!
Glad you were able to get some justice, Matt. Thanks for the warning.
Glad you got your money back. My biggest problem with Discogs is people that do not know how to grade albums....my most recent was about 3 months ago I purchased a first pressing Japanese Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers. I ended up paying $65 because this was a personal grail...received the record and it looked like it had been dragged off a pickup truck thru the parking lot. He had graded this VG+ in the description. Contacted the seller and thankfully he refunded this to me and I sent back. The problem I find is sellers sometimes use stock photos and I should have requested actual photos...and FYI I noticed about a month ago this is back being listed....not sure if this a different copy but buyer beware....this should be in the dollar bin 🤔😩🤷🏻♂️🙉
I’ve had the same problem on a few occasions. Every time no refund or even a few bucks back. Unless a guy
has 100% feedback I stay away.
I’ve tried contacting Discogs and PayPal but they seem to side with
the seller, “ the guy paying the fees”
It’s such a piss off when you open
a package and see crap. Leave a Negative feedback then he leaves you
one even if you played by the rules.
It really sucks at times. 😎
same thing on a mint- grand funk lp---scratched beyond belief! "my son must have packed that one" i did get my money back
That should have been graded poor, especially if it keeps sticking in the grooves a lot, causing looping, or skipping out of the grooves. What he supplied, he should have been handed in to the nearest jumble sale, where things usually go for a few pennies.
Glad to hear Pay Pal was reasonable - tough for them to know who the scammers are, as I'm sure there are probably buyers who do the same thing (i.e. buy something, get it and then say it wasn't correct / didn't get delivered).
That is why sellers should, without exception, make sure they use a tracking service, then the buyer can't say they haven't had it when they have signed for it at their end. Sellers should always be vigilant to make sure they send the right goods to the right people, not make silly harebrained mistakes. I see that a fair bit on feedback from buyers where people have received goods meant for someone else - basically not matching the goods to the customer correctly.
I’m not a huge fan of all the music you are into but I really enjoy your shows and the information you share with everyone on the hobby of music collecting and info as in this vid. You do a great job and are very well spoken, take care and always giving you a thumbs up 👍.
I appreciate you!!
Wow, thanks for telling us this, I had never thought about this or thought that it could happen using PayPal. I’m glad that they made it right.
So glad to hear PayPal worked with you and got your money back. I remember how stressed out you sounded on the Facebook post.
Thank You for this video!!! I am having the same problem with a vendor from China. They gave me a USPS number in May and USPS website indicates they are waiting for the package. Everyone still should be wary of seller feedback.
Thanks for letting us know!
I am glad PayPal worked it out with you. I am always leary of buying anything online, lol. Thanks for sharing and great hat! PJ4EVA!!
I didn't even know you could buy records on Discogs, even though I often use it for reference, as well as a source for my FLAC album cover-art.
Ugh. That's a new one. Thanks for the heads-up Matt!
When I worked at PayPal this was a typical situation, but usually with expensive shoes and such. Someone would order something and someone would send a shower cap or some other worthless item so that it appeared the item was shipped.
These scams hurt the sellers with new stores that have very little feedback in the beginning. Though there are probably other tell-tale signs that point to a scam
I highly recommend using the usps informed delivery service. It’s free, and it shows you all the packages heading to your address in the usps system, as well as images of the smaller pieces of mail like letters. It doesn’t show size and weight like ups or FedEx, but it helps make it easy to keep track of all your packages.
Thank you so much. As a new and young Collector. I will keep this in mind❤️
No way! You've got the Limited Collector's Edition white variant of the Victory Packaging box set?! That's super rare, especially signed by Matthew Kisai himself and still sealed! Dude you're so lucky! /s
LOL - trading it for a copy of Blond hit me up
Kids these days ..lol
Thanks for the share. Knowledge is power
Thnx for the warning! An by the way! Nice PJ hat! ;-)
Scammers are truly ruin the beauty of this hobby and it is sad. But I am glad you got your money back.
Great Channel. Everything this dude says is on point. Ive experienced so much of what he talks about.
Tell all your friends ;)
I have started buying more records online again, and I worry about getting scammed. I'm glad this ended ok for you.
Frank
If you use PayPal, you'll almost always be protected, Frank! Just be aware of what you order and keep track :)
Go to your local record store and inspect before purchase. Problem solved.
Good to know. Thanks for that informative tip 👍🏻
Thank you! And good for you hard work does pay off
Hi thanks for doing this video. Yes, we have to do keep an eye out for the fly- by-nighters. Someone taking advantage of anyone with a passion for something as music and deliberately steals from
them is very low. Glad you got the money back Hopefully you will get that box set one day at a discount.
Good lookin out Matt.
The only scam that ever got me was on the selling end. Probably 8 years ago I sold a near mint Zeppelin 1 on eBay. Someone sent me a message saying it was in horrible condition, I told them to return it. They sent it back, and it was not the same record. It was a wrecked copy. I stopped selling on eBay shortly after that.
I talked about that in my previous video as a possible scam, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. That's so, so shitty and there's no real way as a seller you can protect yourself from that :(
Ebay has absolutely zero protection for sellers. On the plus side, it's rapidly dying away. Private sellers only make 1-2% of the overall business anymore, all the rest is just the usual Aliexpress junk being shipped around the world by the containerload from Shenzhen.
That is crazy! Sorry that happened. Even with getting your money back it just leaves a pit in your stomach. No matter how bad I want a grail, I never purchase a grail with less than 100 positive feedback. I have also gotten in the habit or requesting very, very specific pictures of grails. Now you can still get scammed, but at least you have more confidence knowing the person at least has a copy.
Thanks for sharing. Even Discogs & Paypal couldn't help you initially, thats terrifying but thanks for spreading your story. It will lead to more cautious buying.
Discogs are shit,I only buy on ebay
This happens a lot on eBay where a customer will initiate a return get a tracking number and then just send you an empty envelope something. PayPal used to side with them all the Time. It's nice to see that they're finally protecting buyers
still the same
Thanks man! At least you got the money back, I never got a record once that I ordered years ago and I’m still bitter bout it. It was ordered overseas and they said not to contact em cus they only had one person running the wearhouse situation but it was comming. So I only ordered one just incase. Maybe it’s got stolen but I order others all the time with no problems.
Dammmm that’s soo shitty bro! I hate those kind of people! I’m hella happy you got refunded by PayPal tho and thanks for making a video warning all of us about it too! Some people are just shitty people and that’s pretty much it.. thanks for the knowledge Matt!
Sorry to hear that. Hope ur case will be reopened.
I live in Malaysia, I frequently buy vinyl on ebay. Since this is Global Shipping program, it would be hard for them to scam because the GSP will reopen the package prior shipping internationally.
It's tough purchasing from Discogs lately due to COVID-19 slowing the mail way down. I've learned that these days patience is required: the seller may only go to the post office once a week to drop off deliveries, and once it's in the postal service's hands, media mail has become a real crawl. Luckily with good communication with the seller, and a good tracking number, I still have a good track record buying via Discogs. And of course, only buy from people with solid seller ratings!
You can actually do that from a laptop now and schedule your carrier to pick it up from your porch without you having to go anywhere but your porch.... USPS.com.... click and ship. Get supplies delivered also.. (ya, his express boxes, free)
Man I’ve had numerous records be delayed the past 2 weeks due to covid. One was supposed to be delivered Wednesday last week and is floating around some where
As a seller, I've been super surprised at how fast media mail has been arriving to my buyers. My best guess is that mail volume being way down has cleared the way for items low on the USPS priority schedule to move sooner. I guess our mileage may vary. But yes- the communication is key, from buyer but especially seller. I tell the buyer that if I see a line at the Post Office, I'm not going in, so it may take an extra day or two, then communicate when it actually ships, and always send the tracking number.
Wow, that was insane, I'm glad you got your money back. I've had nothing but good experiences with Discogs but I'll definitely be more careful from now on, thanks for your video 👏
Thanks for your comments man. I never buy on Discogs, only Amazon except a "compilation" that was sold by an outsider in the UK but within amazon, I'm still waiting for my package 😂
It's sad to have to do it, but when I order anything of real value from a private seller (discogs/ebay/fb), I always video tape opening the package. Shrink wrapped boxes is pretty easy to prove. But had the seller sent you a box of rocks, it might have gone differently.
Very good idea!
This is good... and as a seller, I always document the outgoing process as well and send it to the buyer.. I find that people really appreciate this extra step.
I take pics of the boxes of items before I open
Happy it worked our . Thanks for the information.....Love the hat
Thanks dude :)
This is terrible! I am so glad you got your money back!
Thanks for the warning. Glad you got your money back.
wow, thats crazy...good job !!!!
I had the opposite experience with PayPal years ago. I sold an old iPhone of mine on eBay. Buyer buys it. I ship. All good. Then when the buyer gets it, they request a refund from PayPal. But they don't return my phone. Much worse, nobody requested a refund from me. Without communication from either the buyer or PayPal, PayPal just took the money out of my account! It was a few hundred dollars that just poofed without explanation. Nobody requested a refund from me. Nobody talked to me about issues with the phone. Nothing. Just woke up to find my payment gone.
I reached out to the buyer who never responded to me. I opened a case with PayPal, which was quickly denied! But I had tracking information and even a signature confirmation of delivery. In the end, I had to essentially spam PayPal and threaten to get the FBI involved myself until finally they gave me my money back!
This trick is a classic. I remember back in the days "before the internet", people received patatoes in stead of buzzers, or bricks in stead of a betamax/vhs recorder. And it was legal becouse they tricked you with words. Then they used advertising in papers to reach you.
Between this and urban outfitters you gotta stop getting packages you weren’t expecting and going “oh that’s weird...maybe it was a mistake” 😂glad you got your money back!
Third time's the charm, I can't wait to see what weird stuff shows up next time...
Thanks for the heads up! I buy on Discogs often. I hope these scumbags get back what they're putting out into the world.
I remember seeing this and wondering how it sold so fast! I have been wanting this same box set! I was going to buy it but it did look fishy! Glad it worked out for you!
Worked out... kinda.
The downside to paypal is "the customer is always right" and it's easy to be scammed by buyers, or simply having a "no return" policy and forcing to return regret purchases when there was nothing wrong with the item.
That's crazy! i'm glad you were able to get your money back. They should ban this guy.
This is why whenever i order a rare or expensive record, I record myself opening it and do a close up of the label before i open it that way if they ever send me a rock and send paypal a tracking number i have proof. Happy it ended in your favor!
I immediately saw Animal Collective's MWPP, Strawberry Jam, and Sung Tongs on your shelf.
Recognizable spines for sure
I bought a Grateful Dead boxset for about half what it normally sells for. The package was mailed to a truck stop 2 miles from my house. The PO was very helpful and they got the package to my house. Of course when I opened it, it was a Whitney Houston cd! Paypal was also very helpful.
Same thing happened to me for the Smashing Pumpkins record, Machina. I was furious, i did the same thing you did. I received some weird envelopes and i just put them aside thinking “oh, it was a mistake” Luckily i did not throw them away because the tag was on the bag. The post office needed that which I then needed to give the info to PayPal.. I ended up getting my $300 back. This happened years ago and first time i was Scammed on Discogs, mind you though, this person had reviews and not negative ones. Just goes to show that it can happen to anyone. Glad you got your money back bud! Thanks for sharing
DUDE!! I want that Shadow/Chemist Hard Sell vinyl behind you sooo bad!
Seems like in the last 4-5 years people have been given some kind of licence to be as low as possible..and think it's OK. It's definitely not! Thank you for this public service.
to add to my comment yesterday, I had a seller on discogs (with no feedback) post a Green Day "Father of All..." vinyl brand new...the version with the uncensored cover for a decent price. He shipped it before I even paid for it and the whole sale was legit and the record arrived in a few days. You just never know.
Hey Matt - you had mentioned in a previous video that you had thoughts on both sides for RSD, record flipping online, etc. now that we are a few months away, i'd love to see a video with your take on flippers, how it's being handled this year, etc.
Thank you for the heads up! We’ve been buying a lot from discogs during the quarantine and never even thought of something like that. There were a few sellers that we encountered that refused to take PayPal which was a huge red flag to me and didn’t buy from them. It sucks that this kind of thing gives people who are trying to start a legit online record shop a bad name because you don’t start with feedback. There’s always someone who has to ruin it for everyone. Thank things worked out well and PayPal handled it well. -Miranda
Legwork...I've added about 1200 albums to my collection in the last 2 years at flea-markets and garage sales. Everything from Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours", to VH1, and from Memphis Slim to The Troggs...The highest price I've paid was $63.00 Canadian for a very early New Zealand Parlophone pressing of Please Please Me which had news clippings for the 1964 Beatles concert in Wellington N.Z. and is in magnificent condition..
I had a very similar situation on eBay, I ordered vinyls and received some sort of toy bracelet. I checked the tracking number, and that’s what it was. Good thing I took a picture of the package before opening it, and now whenever I’m paranoid I record an unboxing video in case I need it in the future. For my case, both eBay and PayPal got involved and I got my money back within 3 days of opening the case.
It pays to shop online at reputable dealers and sellers. Low feed back means buyer beware! Thanks for sharing this info!
This has happened to a mate who thought he was getting a 'grail' guitar for a steal...
Dude I am a huge FF7 fan and collect records too haha. Do you have the original copy of the soundtrack? It is a beauty, the repress a year ago is nice too.
To be fair, they did send a "set of boxes" and if they sent it on the weekend, you got what you reordered...
Just kidding. That's terrible. Glad it worked out alright, though!
LOL
Thank you for that video, you have done smth great. Now more people will pay attention to these types of discogs users. You can reach way more people with those informations than anyone else in this business. Wish you a great day, peace
Here to help!
I'm sure this has already been said a million times, but I think the biggest scam of new records is that they are made using digital sources, not the original source.
Exactly !
Mark Troddyn Vinyl per se won’t make any digital recording sound better, specially if one’s standard/benchmark for analog are pre-1980 recordings. Unless it is a well-done reissue of a pre-1985 recording I’m not much interested. I have sold back or returned many recent vinyl releases because I concluded that sonically wise I’m better off with the CD. Way cheaper, too.
@@alzamonart I 100 percent agree. I think what drives me crazy is that the music industry, seeing that they are losing money with CD sales, offers the public these recently pressed records that sound wise aren't any better than the CDs. I guess if you are losing money you will do whatever you can to stay in business. Regardless, walking into the music section of a Barnes and Nobles these days is pretty damn depressing.
Glad you got refunded. Best case scenario would have been you got Trilogy for $200.😉
Thanks for the warning.
Sorry you went through ALLLLL that mess. :(
Some people are such deceitful pigs.
Probably the best thing to do is to ask questions of the seller if there's a variant on the first pressing that they're unaware of especially on online shopping ask ask questions about the record whether there's a UPC or if there's a label variant that denotes that it's the first pressing because unfortunately sellers on eBay and discogs think they're selling the first pressing and it's not as far as scammers go always check their feedback that's usually a good first clue to who you're dealing with thanks Matt was a good video
I've seen this happen as well. I've also seen a variant of it wherein, for instance, a few LPs are ordered from one seller, one of which being a rare, costly LP. The other lesser expensive LPs are sent, the costly one? You guessed it. Negative. Same type of scam. Makes the PayPal claim, which ultimately be won, all the more difficult and tends to take forever.
Love the hat!
This scam could happen with any products, not just vinyl.
The one dislike is the dude that scammed u💀💀💀💀💀
Some people truly are scumbags.
Very interesting! Glad you were able to win and get your $$$.
Thanks for the heads up. Good you got your money back.
Good warning - If it's too good to be true .................it's probably not true.
Bait and switch isnt new. I ordered tested vintage Bozak 2" tweeters. Got them. One of the tweets had a dent in the aluminum cone. The dent was not in the photos on Ebay. Guy said they had several sets. I got what I ordered. There was no indication on the Ebay page that there were multiple sets and weren't receiving the pair that was photo'd. Paypal and Ebay sorted it out. Got my money back. I tried to work with seller first. They just give the run around.
I'm more of a movie collector myself, but always worried about 'scams' and such. So far all has been good for me with Ebay and all. But I'm sure one of these days I'll see something 'too good to be true' and get hosed. Plus, I'm also a new seller on Ebay, and I guess what's slowing down sales is that I just use regular post for my stuff. No tracking or anything. Keeps costs WAY down for S&H, but then there's the added wait time and angst of safe delivery. But even for those that are panicked where there stuff might be, I keep in contact with them to assure 'hopefully soon'. And so far so good. But yeah, I can see how people would think I'm a scammer too possibly. A shame these dillweeds exist and are so brazen with their schemes.
The same general thing happened to me when I bought a pair of headphones from an Ebay seller with no seller rating to go by. All that was shipped was a tiny envelope maybe the size of a credit card to give me the bare minimum of sending something with a tracking number. I filed a claim with paypal and got my money back.
Ordering a $200 item from a seller with no feedback is just irresponsible!!!
Trilogy is my favourite weekend project(s)! I just got the seperate releases as its much cheaper.
Thanks for posting this. I was scammed exactly in the same way by another vendor on eBay. It was for alot less money and I wrote it off to experience. I also received post office mailers. Buyer beware.
I hate that this is a thing happening to undeserving people :(
@@TooManyRecords yes, I agree, but what's worse is that it makes us legitimate sellers become wrongly scrutinized until we are all out of business.
What’s their username? Gotta add it to my Blocked List....
@@beyondthegong , It was many years ago , I no longer have it. I still have the Mailers from the post office in the Garage and I've used some. But it's like " Hey , You received something, Now shut up", that's the attitude from seller and ebay. It's a very successful scam.
Wow holy crap! I can't believe he even bothered to send you a fake package! SMH
