    To get a little perspective on this appearance on the Today Show. Martin and Lewis were officially breaking up as a team within weeks, and when Lewis says that they'll be in court all next week, he wasn't kidding.
    You will also notice that the team seemed to be straining to get through their appearance. And they didn't exhibit the engaging chemistry that marked their performances when they were at their peak.

      That’s helpful. I couldn’t tell what was going on... I just love their chemistry and there was 2% here. Dean seems gone. Did he break it off?

    Was I the only one honestly wishing that Jerry would just shut up and let poor Dean sing? Can't imagine how annoyed Dean was that whole time--I'm actually surprised he didn't just walk off sooner.
    46:53 "I could've *phoned* this in..."
    49:27 "I think *I* did great by *showing up*!"

      Dena Dixon For a grown man, Jerry's attention-seeking antics were really quite pathetic... He showed many times over the years that he really couldn't bear for anyone else to get any acclaim, often behaving like a jealous little boy.

    Thanks, I've been searching for this. The Martin & Lewis divorce condensed into 15 min. Jerry is really over the top with his interruptions of Dean's song, conceding him neither the camera nor the audio, needling him about his lackluster nightclub career. Dean remains nonchalant, Jerry in increasingly desperate attempts to get his attention becomes almost unbearably obnoxious, Dean ignores him up to the point where he can take no more & walks off, returns under duress, then exits for good.

    as a massive fan of Martin & Lewis this was painful to watch, you could cut the bloody tension with a knife. Jerry said in an interview about this, that they couldn't even look at each other

    Tenía que suceder así, no existe la perfección en los seres humanos, yo me quedo con el grandioso legado de estos dos artistas maravillosos, yo le aseguro que hoy están juntos en el cielo, dándose besos y cantando

    Awwww....I love Jerry, but he was really a huge jerk in this video. Wow. I think sometimes people who criticize famous people forget that they have human emotions and react to them the wrong way, just like everyone else. Jerry was in a lot of pain during this time, and taking it out on everyone around him, especially Dean. He really loved Dean, and couldn't fix their relationship. And it really hurt him. Plus the fact that Dean stayed cool and refused to take Jerry's bait, which really annoyed Jerry lol!

    • @pamelahawley4844
      @pamelahawley4844 3 роки тому

      That is So well said. And I don’t think jerry was annoyed. I think he was heartbroken. Dean always loved she reacted with him on Steve. Dean withheld his love/interaction/banter with Jerry, which is what jerry always wanted. He was heartbroken. He knew he had lost Dean’s love for now. It Dean I found said he loved him and kisssed him on his 72. Birthday. I just wish they Luke have had solo careers and the also performed a few times per month. It seems they needed a big break....

    Apparently not talking much at this point and only a month from disbanding. They knew they were parting soon here. At 500 Club in honour of that being where they started. Jerry going over the top works some time not really here. However at 7 am Dean seems barely awake and Jerry has had too much coffee! It was over.

      This was within a month of Dean and Jerry's official break up date of July 25th 1956 which had been agreed earlier. At this point they were working through contractual obligations to clear the decks and get a clean break into their upcoming solo careers.
      It has been well established that they were not talking at this point except in performances. They performed at the 500 Club in Atlantic City as their final gigs as that was the venue they got their start. Their last gig was 10 years to the day after their first.
      There is a fascinating and detailed account of the break up at the following website 'Better Living Through Television' Martin Vs Lewis Round 1'.
      Jerry's Book Dean and Me A Love Story is good too.
      I find Dean and Jerry's story to be a fascinating showbiz saga and I think quite a few other people do as well.

    • @VicMartino

      @@pamelahawley4844 Their break up was "brewing" before this appearance here. It had been "festering" ever since they made the movie "Three Ring Circus" Dean was fed up with playing the same role of "heel" who redeems himself in the end! And when Jerry started taking himself serious as a singer that was too much! But in the end they both had great careers as a team first and then as solo acts. The only comedy team to ever to do so. And they did come to terms with one another eventually.

    • @pamelahawley4844
      @pamelahawley4844 3 роки тому +1

      @@VicMartino Totally agree. And at that time the movies were what was considered their longterm contribution -- so Dean felt trapped in that movie role. I think their biggest contribution was their club act, totally keyed into each other and improv and Colgate shows. Still miss that synergy of their connection. It is a huge missed opportunity for them and for us. Both pathways could have been achieved. I am new to them and just fell in love with their work as a team. I am learning. And also learning so much about important leadership in partnering. Thank you!

    Good grief - one could see by this point why they broke up the next month after this aired - Dean had had it with Jerry - and Jerry’s performance here would be enough to break them up.

    How did Dean put up with this for so long? Soon Dean would be recognized for his all-around talent... top-rated TV show, hit songs, films like "Airport". Jerry was dropped by Paramount in the early 60's and by 1970 couldn't get financing for his projects and was seen once-a-year by telethon viewers. What goes around comes around. As a kid I loved Jerry, but he became unbearable pretty quickly and became hard to take. Dean's TV programs, films and recordings were always a treat.
