I believe some similar effects might be produced by "spalting," which is the result of a fungus infecting the wood. You can even inoculate wood with the fungus to produce the effect artificially.

It's so sickening that UA-cam will aggressively go after some channels for the smallest thing while allowing and sometimes even actively promoting dangerous content.
It's really beyond ridiculous that true crime channels that are aimed at adults - especially the ones with the "you must be 18+ to view" thing - can't even allude to some crime occurring (even when they aren't showing photos/video) but UA-cam is actively fine with promoting content that is confirmed to be killing people, aimed at all audiences so some children are even dying. Just fucking beyond ridiculous.
I think Ann made a video about why that is awhile ago. About how mindless garbage content farms can basically do whatever they want and promote lies/dangerous activities because the millions of viewers that they pull in is staggering. So basically MONEY🙄. It's such a shame

Lightning freaks me out more than hearing strange noises in the house in the middle of the night. I'm more afraid to die from lightning than things that would more realistically kill me (such as driving in my car recklessly), but it's such an extreme weather event that I can't help but be mortified by it.
Saw a short recently with my partner- first time seeing fractal wood burning, partners first words were “and that video is going to kill someone” followed by an explanation of what would happen. As the daughter of an electrician I wouldn’t go near anything like that with a 10ft insulated pole. Unfortunate it's in UA-cam's 'best interest' in the short-term (till lawsuits inevitably occur) to monetize everything. The handling of copyright is probably because they don't want to get sued or make companies mad by making it easy to appeal copyright problems.

This isn't "people might die". This is "people HAVE died" and UA-cam continues to allow the videos to be shown. There is no accountability and there will never be any apology or compensation from UA-cam because they are too rich and powerful.
when companies grow too big, they reach a point where they no longer care, then another point where people can actually tell they don't care. its become hard to trust big companies.
UA-cam is more concerned with whether a video is "advertiser friendly" than actually safe. They're more upset about people saying words like "murder" "suicide" or "eating disorder" in their videos (making creators have to walk on eggshells and find new ways to talk about those subjects or even mention the words lest their videos get taken down or age restricted and demonetized) than showing dangerous life hacks that kill people.
I've been in a Woodworking school, all of our teachers were very experienced and would always prioritise safety above everything else. We had to design and craft a small cabinet for one of our end of the year project, and one student wanted to fractal burn his cabinet because It'd look cooler, and his teacher threatened him like "If you try to make or i even see a small fractal burn on your cabinet, you not only won't get your diploma, but I'll EXPEL you from the school, and that's if you're still alive, GOT IT?!" The guy fortunately listened and ended up opting for a simple and safe wood burning with an engraver, but imagine if he did it anyway 😨

I'm an electrical engineer and I'm gonna say this: She is absolutely right. Don't do this. We practice safety measures when dealing with high voltages and things still can go terribly wrong. Transformers are EXTREMELY dangerous.

Opened UA-cam 15 minutes ago and your video was suggested. Had no idea it was about the same craft technique and had an actual “oh crap” moment you started talking about it. Not glad the internet is creepily watching my every move and making judgements about my interests, but glad it showed me your video before I showed the one from Facebook to my wood-turning step-grandpa. Yep it’s so true. The fact that they delineated “derivative works” so they could make merch or spin offs of any video, or artwork you put on yt. I’m disgusted but not surprised. The way they only flashed the channel name when other UA-camrs generally keep the credit up on screen the entire time a clip plays. Just goes to show who really respects who.
When anybody else does that, their video can be demonitized or taken down. When UA-cam themselves do that, it's "oh, we love giving our creators exposure". I wonder if the creators knew about theit content being shared and consented to it beforehand.

By uploading to UA-cam you agree under the standard UA-cam license that any content you upload can be used by UA-cam to promote the site. That's pretty much true for any social media company. They're not legally obligated to compensate the creator as scummy as it looks.

Big Clive has a great video about it. He doesn't just completely scare the daylights out of you, although he does do that, he actually explains a much safer way to achieve a very similar effect. H2CT's video has over six hundred thousand views. I would not be surprised if there's at least one person that watched it and thought "But still, I'm smart enough to do it". With Big Clive's version, maybe they could do it.

Microwave transformers are one of the most horrifyingly dangerous things an amateur can get their hands on, and fractal wood burning is far from the only immensely dangerous thing they are featured in on youtube.
yep, microwave transformers (or disassembling microwaves in general) can still be lethal even if the microwave hasnt been plugged in for a while, and as she said, even experts who use them still die doing it
i did a year of electric work for my schools mandatory tafe subject, the amount of safety needed just to even setup one of those things is mindboggling, you put your thick as fuck rubber gloves on, rubber boots, eye protection, you ground yourself, ground the table, connect up the transformer using special clips that are fully rubberised under the constant insntruction of the bloke teaching us, and the arc that came out of the rod used for the demonstration was massive
Yup experts either don't mess with them or rewind them for low voltage high current. They are just stupid to use. Experts that do fractals use neon supplies and switch it remotely, never go near anything plugged in with bare leads. Edit: see Big Clive's channel for a video specifically addressing this issue.
I've worked as a professional technician and I'll take apart a lot of stuff but I will not mess with microwaves. It's so easy to do one thing wrong and then it's deadly.

Everyone needs to recognise this practice!! Because of your video and others.... When i walked into the maintenance area of the property i manage.... I saw wood pieces with dractal burning on them. I had just watched this video and knew rhat it meant our maintenance guy had been doing that in our shop. A) its not his job to be making wood art at work. B) the liability to the company we work for is astronomical. I immediately let him know how inappropriate and danferous this was and followed it with a write up with no second warning option.
I work in a scenic carpentry shop at a university. We have a bunch of teenage theatre majors who are all artists, and one of them mentioned doing this on one of their projects. I about bit their damn head off. Not only would the liability be enough to get our program shut down, I'm also not cleaning up after a mistake like that, both paperwork-wise and physical cleaning. Luckily the threat of expulsion and blacklisting from the union is enough to get them to straighten up and away from this kind of stuff but they really do not realize how close to death they come with just the TABLE SAW, let alone fucking with electricity like that. I'm just glad the electricians/lighting students are in a different shop.
My son just came home from his first day of school and asked me to send this video to his wood shop teacher. His teacher was going through the year's plans and told the class they are going to do fractal wood burning later this year. I cannot imagine the horror you and your child must have felt when you were told that his teacher was planning on having him do something so incredibly dangerous. You would think a teacher would do a lot more research just to be sure something like this was actually safe, or at least as safe as operating a table saw or belt sander.

The only video I've seen that could possibly compete with the danger of this hack is one about how to make your own DIY wood chipper / garden shredder. This involved removing the blades from knives and welding them to a motor inside a plastic bucket. If anything goes wrong with the weld job at all, the blades will fly off at knee height, and the plastic isn't going to stop them. Do NOT attempt to do this. I don't know if there's anyone who has gotten hurt, and I don't want there to be.
That sounds like a crazy dangerous idea. Even if the blades never come loose, I don’t think that a plastic bucket could be counted on to not break apart when being struck by high speed chunks of wood.
I also want to point out that even getting the microwave transformer from an old microwave is highly dangerous. Inside of modern microwaves,(even if its been disconnected from power for months and sometimes years) there is still a HV capacitor that holds charge for a long time. If you touch the wrong thing in a microwave even if its disconnected, you can still die; the capacitor can hold charge for years and still deliver enough power to stop your heart. TLDR; do not mess with microwaves unless you have electrical engineering experience.
This comment needs to be higher up, so many devices have a capacitor that can give you a shock. Luckily for me my "learnt it the hard way" was just with a disposable camera (I worked in a photo lab) and while I always removed the battery before doing battle with the casing for the actual film, the flash had apparently been charged and I got enough of a shock to make me yelp (which is unusual for me with pain), burn my finger and have extreme hair frizz (which made the whole thing look cartoonish, but it was no joke). Luckily my finger healed (got first aid burn treatment straight on it), but that capacitor had only charged from a single AAA battery! I dread to think what the capacitor in anything that plugs into the mains could do. Seriously people, don't mess with electrical equipment, EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT ATTACHED TO A POWER SORCE!
yup! microwaves are DEATH BOXES, and should be treated as such. 2kv at pretty high current is not a joke too. HV capacitors, high voltage and current transformers, and the scary magnetron (that could even have a beryllium ceramic ring on it that is highly dangerous/carcinogenic), all around not worth it for some dumb stuff, if you need HV just get a proper supply like a neon transformer that has more safety features
@@CharleyU unless it comes from China, many devices include a discharge resistor, which empty these caps in seconds. The capacitor doesn't care what's the power source, mains or AAA battery, what it delivers is expressed in Joules and this is what determines the shock you'll receive. Plus, there is a high voltage transformer (it's switch mode) into cameras that step up the voltage from a pair of 1.5v batteries (or more) to 320v. So I checked the specs of a random microwave, the capacitor is 1.07uF and the voltage is 2400v , so that's 3.08 Joules. A Flash capacitor depends on the camera, but I found 220uF being used in one, at 320v that's 11.264 Joules. Which means the capacitor in the flash camera stores more energy than the capacitor in the microwave.
It's unbelievable that UA-cam would ban a warning video that explains the deadliness of a hack. Shame on them, and good for you for fighting for the truth to be told.
If I were a liability lawyer and I heard about that action, I'm not sure I'd be able to stop salivating. How can YT spin that as anything other than extremely-strong evidence that they're both aware of the danger these videos *that they are profiting from* hold, and that they're attempting to cover it up, further endangering the public to protect their ill-gotten profits? Yet another example of why our modern age of oligarchic hyper-corp monopolization, especially in the tech sector, is bad for everyone, including the owners of the monopoly itself. I can't imagine those invested in UA-cam are aware of the extreme liability to which the malfeasance and incompetence of YT's management is exposing them, but they may well find out the hard way.

I'm not sure how I came across this video, but I'm glad I saw it. My husband is a woodworker and people frequently send him things about the beautiful projects he could do and he's always telling them that it is extremely dangerous and he will NOT be doing it. But it continues, so I'm glad to see a video like this. I only wish that the video was split so that it focused on the dangers and had a title like "Fractal Wood Burning Dangers" so it was easier to share. On a side note, the look after trying the milk tea gelatin was priceless LOL.
There is another version of the video because this one was initially taken down by YT, but the other one just has the fractal wood burning section and is still up.
One of the things they don't tell you and that you didn't mention is that you don't actually have to touch this to be electrocuted. In the example at 11:50, you'll see him lift the electrodes off the wood and an arc continues between the electrodes. Well if your hands or legs or anything are closer to the electrodes than the wood is, that arc will redirect itself to the path of least resistance (i.e. you). Especially if you're using alligator clips and your fingers are a centimeter from the exposed metal, when that arc breaks, it can easily just whip around and attach to both of your hands. I would bet that most of these people who died never touched any part of the metal or wood. They pulled up an electrode and the arc connected to their body. If you want an idea of something closer to what you're dealing with than mains voltage, just look at any of the "electrical substation disconnecting" videos on UA-cam. There's a reason no one is anywhere near those things when they disconnect. Just for numbers, it takes about 30,000 volts per centimeter to *start* an arc, but only about 30 volts per centimeter to maintain an arc. US mains voltage will maintain an arc of about 4cm, UK/AU mains voltage will maintain an arc of about 8cm but the voltage from a microwave transformer can maintain at least a half meter arc. Your circuit breakers will disconnect just from the power requirements, but not right away and the damage will already be done.
Straight up. Anything dealing with high voltage isn't worth it unless you're willing to devote lots of time and money to make it safe. I'd only ever stumbled across one video of fractal woodburning and the person who did it had an entire room devoted to it and went into another room to turn on and turn off the power. I thought that was how everyone did it! To see someone just holding alligator clamps with their bare hands blew my mind! WTH!

I have a friend that works for the power company, he told me that they must check their insulated gloves daily by putting an air hose in the glove while holding it in a bucket of water to make sure there are no holes in them. One tiny hole as in pinhole sized can allow electricity to pass through and kill the person.
And to add to the fractal wood burning, there's an immense danger just REMOVING the transformer from the microwave. People aren't aware of the capacitors that can hold massive charges long after they are unplugged. One slip of the screw driver can be just as bad as the fractal wood burning.

@@Katherine-wt1oh Yep. Capacitors are quite literally batteries and they can store an immense amount of power. They are incredibly dangerous and very easy to discharge into your body, so never handle them if you aren't trained enough to know how to do so safely. They are easy to spot, most of them being silver in color, with wires coming out of the top (if connected), usually with 2 to 3 "terminals" that have prongs that look like flat teeth in this | | shape or that same basic shape with 3 prongs in a triangle formation. Kinda like this /_\ Honestly though, just look up "capacitors" online for images to know what to avoid.
@@flamerollerx01 the game used to be 'catch', but we only used a 240v and a 16uf so the shock was pathetic, only access the same finger. Charging was from a pp3 and an oscillator into a transformer using the 9v as the primary. Opening a camera crash is a risk too. If you don't know to check the caps you will be given a very nasty belt off the cap. Some use 2 stages of pump and dump tube ignition so you get many kV from one, not serious in principle as the discharge is short, but the weak of heart will be at high risk.
The fact UA-cam banned this video but not a single one of the thousands of dangerous hack videos really speaks volumes about what they value the most. Thank you for standing strong and for doing what you do, Ann!
I genuinely don't understand why they would have done what they did (apart from the obvious part that likely no humans were involved in the decision-making). It makes them look like idiots, and doesn't even appease corporate interests (like demonitizing videos critiquing music).
@@thelionofgod I think, rule of thumb is, unfortunately, if they don't care enough it's because no matter what happens they have their backs covered by laws/lawyers so they can continue generating money over viral trends while not being liable for any harm or deaths the videos may cause. This popped up on my feed today and I thought I'd seen and commented before, but didn't realize there was a controversy and it was deleted! I want to say, I saw a video posted on another site showing fractal wood burning, and to my delight, most of the comments (over 200) were just saying how incredibly dangerous it is and how the person doing it is lucky to not be dead yet. No one seemed interested in the result or knowing how to do it. It seems the internet knows about this and how bad it is, due to videos like this. Well done!
I'm so angry UA-cam banned this, even temporarily, because they blatantly misinterpreted the intent of the video. But seeing all the stories in the comments and you talking about how important it is, gave me the push to share this new video on my social medias I share with my friends and family.
It definitely feels like the dodging of responsibility that they do by claiming "it's not our video, we're just the place where it's hosted" no longer applies when they're the ones posting the video to other places.

The point of UA-cam's "we're just the hosts" protection is that thousands of hours of video are uploaded every day and it would be absolutely impossible to vet it all. Meanwhile, if you have drugs or a gun in your house, you probably would (or at least should) have knowledge of it. Unless your house is so massive that it's genuinely impossible to visit all the rooms regularly, I guess (but if you're that rich, I'm sure you can afford some pretty powerful lawyers to defend you).
Come now, UA-cam doesn't have time to vet the content they're stealing from their creators! The breakfast video clearly shows that it worked and didn't cause any fires, so it must be fine! 🤦♀️ It's really infuriating how little responsibility they take. At least we have Ann!
As an electrician, I am so happy with how thorough and easy to understand your explanation of the transformer and the dangers of electricity are! Very well put together (as always). Also, thank you for calling out electricians and passing along a warning for us to not try this dangerous activity as well! ❤️ It is not something anyone should be playing with, especially with such a small margin for (fatal) error.
I don't understand why people don't just get some of those pictures (of the woodburns) and get a thick marker and a woodburning-apparatus and then costumize their own 'lightning' patterns and burn it on there. I mean sure, heckload of work, but you'll be able to make it exactly the way you want and I bet there's a way to press/burn it quicker with wire or something, without using electricity, just heat. And if you don't have a woodburner, you use paint. I mean, apart from being able to brag to guests that you did this with electricity (and you can't impress the guests on your funeral) then that pattern would be just as impressive when made without electricity.
All the effort put in is working! I watch woodworking videos but had never heard of fractal wood burning. This video was suggested to me and was how I learned about the process. You are beating the hack videos! You do amazing work keeping people safe.
Fractal woodburning seems like one of those things the Mythbusters would try while wearing insulated gloves, standing on a rubber mat, and saying excessively and urgently "don't try this at home".
Unfortunately, you're not required to say "Don't try this at home" on UA-cam. You can, in fact, explicitly describe your content as a "How to" guide and never mention that it'll probably get the viewer killed or mutilated.
They would absolutely have (1) built a robot to do this, and then (2) delivered basically the same sermon Ann did in this video, from a heavily-insulated bunker half a mile away from said robot.

The amount of comments I read about people thinking about doing it and then reconsidering are quite worrying. Imagine all the other life threatening hacks out there that aren't covered... Glad you could catch your mom before she went through with anything. Should try to share with as much people as you can cause these comments have taught me you never know who's interested or not.
There is s safe ish way of doing this without the microwave transformer but it's pretty much impossible if you don't have a lot of knowledge about electronics already
There are now more vids coming up that show how dangerous this is....so Ann will be pleased to see those. ( she is not ego driven about this! ). There are at least two that I have seen that promise "safer" ways to do it,..... I don't know how accurate they are..... There are creative people out there: I can only suggest try painting, wood carving, there are heaps more ways to make lovely objects. Building things from papier mache or clay, or that no kiln needed clays. Encourage your loved people in other directions.
It's crazy to me that UA-cam would ban a warning against a lethal act yet leave the videos encouraging such a thing up. Messing with a microwave transformer alone is extremely dangerous as is but to rig it up purely to do this is insane. You're work to speak out against this is so heroic saving lives and bringing awareness to people! Nothing but the deepest and most sincere respect for you and your channel.

Thank you Ann, I appreciate what you said about the wood burning, because last year I lost my brother to it, who was an experienced electrician. We all know the UA-cam algorithm sucks and punishes small content creators while supporting content farms, but the fact that they blatantly allow incredibly dangerous hacks *and* tried to punish Ann for speaking out against them is horrific. There really needs to be some sort of investigation into their practices; this is getting ridiculous.
I beleive you are making a comment as a side look at "cooking people". There was a movie about aliens coming to earth to take people to their planet where they will be taught advanced sciences. The book the leader carries translates as "How to Cook Humans". I wonder if the science they have includes recipes.
We made same fractal wood at the University in the course of electrical engineering. There were a dozen layers of passive protection, including a grounded double metal cage. We put the electrodes, left the cage, closed it tightly, otherwise the automation would not work, closed the second cage, and then turned on the switch to supply voltage to the electrodes. What we saw terrified us, because we knew what electricity is and how dangerous it is. It lays the same fractal patterns inside our flesh. That's why injures so massive.
When I was at school as a blacksmith, we were told to never wear gloves while using a certain machine. We never really took it seriously and wore gloves anyway because otherwise, you can get small cuts on your fingers from the metal. I almost always wore gloves when using that machine until one day when I met a guy who had lost 3 fingers and half of his hand to that machine because he wore gloves while using it. The tip of his glove got caught in it, causing the rest of his hand to get pulled in. I've never worn gloves when using that machine since I met that guy. I still get people asking me "why don't you wear gloves?" when they see me working the machine. It's crazy how people don't take safety precautions seriously until they or someone they know get hurt.
@@aon02bThere's the old adage that safety regulations are written in blood. Any obvious or silly rule from your workplace or OSHA exist because someone didn't follow them and _died_ or got seriously injured.

I’m a traditional silversmith and we use most of the same big tools y’all do; I have made jigs and workarounds in my own personal shop so that I don’t have to use one because I hated the little sand-cuts I would have after using it in school! Honestly the thing gave me awful anxiety using it after our safety demonstration: that thing is so powerful and you have to work so close to the business end of it…. I was always worried I would get my fingers sucked in even without any gloves on!
@@5taceydaisy You should try the wet belt sander at a glass shop. Thick gloves for the glass, water spraying all over the sharp edges you are holding, and knowing that if it slips, it will likely shatter into a thousand possible missiles.

I said it before and I'll say it again: the mere fact that there is no action taken against things that could result in something to this degree of harm is either alarmingly misinformed or horrifically callous. Now the mere fact that they went after something that tried to do good? Wow, words cannot express the gall.
I really think it's time for another campaign targeting advertisers. If the advertisers know the public is frowning on their ads playing on dangerous videos, they'll pull their ads, and put pressure on youtube to change the way they monitor content. It's already happened once, so we've seen advertisers speak louder than users according to youtube. It might be time for a twitter campaign to let advertisers know their ads are running on dangerous content vids and people aren't happy.

Same! I would figure that this is a good way to get a nasty shock like a standard shock from an outlet. That's plenty enough to deter me from trying it, heh. But I had no idea that the transformer would multiply the current so much! That's terrifying! It makes sense thay the gloves would be useless to stop the shock
BTW, alot of people misunderstand, it's not the volts that's gonna kill you, it's the amps, is exiting the transformer, given it's like what the video says, at 2000 volts, the amperage can still be fatal, be it even at 0.1mA, a thousandth of an Ampere(Amps), the human body can start to feel pain at 0.01mA.

Hearing that fractal wood burning is dangerous is one thing, but knowing multiple electricians have died trying really makes it clear how absurdly dangerous it is. I guess there's a lot more opportunity for mistakes with that than one would expect. Thanks for letting us know!
Exactly. So much things can go wrong it is hard even for a professional to foreshadow them all. Also, setting 2 kV loose through wet wood is a very different thing to fixing broken wall socket in peoples house. So, ordinary electricians are simply not qualified enough for messing with wood burning.
Yeah, stuff like this is one of those areas where a little knowledge can actually be more dangerous than none. It does not surprise me in the least that (home) electricians have been hurt by this. They tend to be very well versed in the safety issues of house current, to the point it becomes habbit. But unless they have worked in higher powered domains like some kind of industrial work, they have learned the wrong safety measures and it can provide a false sense of security.
So would a lineman suit make it safe? (Metalic looking suit the size of bomb disposal suits) though at that cost you might have access to equipment to give the look in a much safer manner.
Being an electrician does not equal being a GOOD electrician. Sometimes, working with something and not dying for long enough can cause a person to lose respect for the danger it represents. Most likely these folks thought "I'm a professional. I don't need to worry." And proceeded to work carelessly. The main takeaway needs to be: This is deadly dangerous, even if you take all the necessary precautions.
The thing to remember is that this falls under the type of thing where if it was in a lab the gear would be bolted to a table and you'd have a whole safety course just to get in the room while it was set up. Only for everyone to clear the area before it was turned on. Power supplies and transformers are not something you just leave out in the air until they get sealed away so as not to be a threat. Even then you have to be super careful about the leads.
Leaving a comment to help it gain attention because I was also interested in trying this a while ago because it’s such a beautiful result. I love crafting and can’t remember why I didn’t, but I certainly would not have realized the dangers. I hope this video saves lives

Just because people do it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. The original purpose of these “hacks” was to save something, whether it’s time or money. Don’t cook something in an unsafe way, using equipment for far too long and overheating it, especially if it takes longer than it would to cook it properly! You would get a better cook faster through almost any other traditional method, why would you put meat in a toaster? There’s no gains, only losses.
It’s so aggravating how UA-cam would strike a video if the video has certain words they don’t like but if someone uploads a dangerous video that could kill others or give them a permanent injury they would let that one slide! Thank you for your videos that will help save many ❤
I think the main problem is that they're enforcing their rules blindly without any regard for context. The wood burning videos show very dangerous practices the should never be reproduced unless every possible safety precaution is taken but they never mention it and no such incident is shown in their videos so UA-cam doesn't realize anything's wrong. Here, she's discussing the consequences of these actions in detail. However, UA-cam doesn't see what she's actually saying or what she's really pointing out. They're only see that she's showing violent images in her video.
UA-cam only cares about views. It's sad. As long as it's popular they'll side with it even if it's lies or conspiracy theories, and worse, delete videos calling out their crap.
I showed that fractal wood burning to my husband because I thought it was interesting. Another danger he pointed out is depending on the wood, you don’t know if the wood has been treated with anything, the fumes are very bad for you. He was electrocuted on a work site years ago and it took over a year for him to recover and still has nerve damage. Since then, he’s had so many medical problems.
Thank you for your comment. It's a sobering thought, and iffy tie-ins 'somewhere' don't help. Also, there may be after-effects just like surgeon's lung (tissue cautery generates latent issues).
I don’t know about anyone else, but if I see videos that show, or promote dangerous acts, I’m not above reporting them, it is also up to the rest of the community to not let people post content that could misinform in such a way it can cause bodily harm or death, we have to look out for each other.

Thank you for explaining to people what happens with this, hopefully you've saved some lives. And the other ones are just laughable, especially the tea recipe. There is so much fakery on the web now, I wish people would wake up.

Knew it was dangerous but I didn't know that tons of ppl have been dying from it. I've messed with microwave oven transformers to try to make a spot welder when I was around 15 but I had the common sense not to touch the mf while it's on. I used a surge protector that was on a backup switch so I'm nowhere near the live circuit

I like to drive 2 nails into a piece of wood, toss that in the microwave and go cook up some soup in the toaster while taking a bath. Saves me a lot of time that way. (seriously, nobody ever do that. I know your out there)

I could see myself trying this, and that’s terrifying. More generally this video has opened my eyes not only to this hack but to how little I research a lot of the content I see / am inspired by. It’s a good reminder to be more responsible about my personal safety when DIYing.
A general rule is if it looks dangerous it probably is and anything involving fire, electricity, chemicals etc you should be careful how you proceed with doing it same with something as simple looking as the polymer resin handling for example and other trends as well that seem harmless on the surface, you should always do as much research on the handling and safty aspects of new hobbies!
Oddly, the initialism for “doing it myself” is DIM, which could be also be used to describe the people with no knowledge of how electricity works that try fractal woodburning.
I must admit, when I have seen these wood-burning videos online, I didn't pause to think just how dangerous they might be, I just accepted them as something cool. I also think electricity can be somewhat of a silent killer, people often don't realize just how dangerous it can be because it's everywhere in our modern lives. omg isn't it crazy how people are so used to having microwaves, they forget it's a literal deathbox. ANY hack or DIY that involves taking apart a microwave has to be banned
Maybe it’s because many children are taught that “microwave is a box where you put your food and press a button to heat it”, and not the actual working principles of a microwave (that it has dangerous components inside, etc). Heck, many parents don’t even know this themselves, so the risk is transferred from generation to generation. We need more explicit PSAs on microwaves, bleach, and all the other common household products which have any element of danger on them. Because sadly many people forget or are unaware that something being mundane doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

There are a lot of very responsibly made videos that use the same parts. The key difference is they come from dry and scientific channels, not cool hacks videos. That being said, dangerous disregard for safety should be banned in any DIY video.

I've seen this video linked on tumblr twice now in a short time, the first time it was commented under a fractal wood burning video that had been posted without a word on safety. Now that I saw the link a second time, I came and watched it and christ it's so much worse than I imagined. A family friend did this once. He shocked himself so bad he lost his some of his fingers, the only reason he lived is because when he fell the plug came out of the wall somehow when he fell. The whole thing was caught on security video. He's extremely lucky to be alive
Never commented before but I'm helping boost this! UA-cam never should have taken it down. It saved my friend's life when I showed her (she did fractal burning) She had no idea how many volts were going through the equipment and dismantled her things right after watching. I went to an antique market with different vendors in booths. One was a woodworker and last time I went, I saw the characteristics lightning marks on some finished cutting boards. And promptly freaked out because of this specific video indicating that this was super dangerous.

I'm really glad you got this video ban reversed. I've been an Electronics Technician for 26 years, and can attest that the transformer inside a microwave is probably the most dangerous electrical devices in your home (unless you happen to have a neon sign... then you may have a toss-up). We created a Jacob's Ladder in our lab using a microwave transformer. The amount of juice they put out is insane. Seriously. You described the way a transformer works very simply, but exactly right. There is no electrical connection between the two sides, so there's no signal to trip the breaker if you happen to short across the leads. Electricity can and does kill. Good warning video.
Hi! Just wondering, as someone owning a neon sign, are there any major things you need to watch out for? or are you okay as long as you don't mess around with the cord etc?
@@lucac8593 Neon signs are quite safe, as long as you're using them as they're intended to be used (plugged in and glowing). The danger comes when you start dismantling them and plugging certain components in. Neon signs have a transformer that can be dangerous if you were to touch it while the power is plugged in. Use your sign daily, you'll be fine... but if you decide to tear it apart, do a little research before plugging things in when they circuitry isn't covered up.
@@lucac8593 If you leave it alone on the wall you’ll be fine. Just regularly inspect the lights for any cracks or breaks and if there seems to be any damage anywhere do not plug it in and get it repaired by a professional to prevent neon gas emissions, and have an electrician examine the transformer if there appears to be any damage to it. Other than that, treat it as any other lamp.

Oh man... I've heard about how dangerous that is. I remember when I was young my father said people get killed by microwaves fooling around with their internal components. Those things kill people and hurt the whole time doing it.... I hear you lose your sense of time, too, as if it wwasn't already a slow way to go. If you ever hear anyone say they plan on doing something like that, tell them don't touch it. That stuff should only be done by extremely professional electrical engineers.

Its worth pointing out that the crocodile clips and jumper cable are designed with 12 to 24 volt use in mind, the insulation is probably not tested up to 2Kv usage and may melt in your hands if you try this.
Commenting for the cause: I almost couldn't believe you'd said fractal wood burning at first. My science teacher told me about it (now) some time ago and the absolute danger of it is genuinely frightening, and the fact some people try it as a DIY hack is even more terrifying. I went to college for Electrical and Computer Engineering and hearing about this stuff is painful. We used to joke in our EEMags course when people would discuss conductors and insulators that "everything is a conductor if you throw enough power at it". Every semester in our electrical lab classes, the lab tech would have a seminar at the beginning of the semester talking about electrical safety and showing us this gory PowerPoint of people who were skinned and burned to death from mistakes in handling high power. And he would emphasize that our lab was only rated for low power systems, we weren't even allowed to touch that stuff. But he did include a very relevant chart that's forever etched into my memory, showing the general values for current that affect male and female bodies and their health effects. At a pretty low current, devices can deliver a shock to you that's so strong, it contracts your muscles to a point that you can't even open your hand, often called the "let go threshold" because at that point you can't let go of the wire electrocuting you. Slightly above that it can disrupt heart functioning, and then it destroys more organ functioning, and then it can start to just melt body tissue. Human bodies are basically resistors in that we both convert electrical energy into heat energy, and everyone who's burned a resistor knows that if you push too much power thru it, it catches fire (even wires can catch fire, we once had a fire burn until the wire melted away into a big whole that cut off the circuit, that was a rough night). Basically if you mishandle fractal wood burning equipment, it becomes fractal human burning equipment. Tbh I wish we learned more about electrical safety in grade school, you shouldn't have to become an engineer to understand what parts of your home can kill you
Back in high school I went to "smart" camp that was held on a college campus. One day we were having class in a lab space that had electrical outlets on the lab benches. One of my lab mates decided to take a brass brad (little metal disc with two metal legs coming off the underside for holding papers together) and bend it into the shape of a plug and shove it in the electrical socket. Luckily for everyone he must have let go a the exact moment it completed the circuit, because while the brad shot out of the outlet and sparks danced all over the table he wasn't hurt. He was hauled up in front of the head of camp and threatened with being sent home for doing something so dangerous, and the rest of the class got a full afternoon lecture on the effects of electricity on the human body. Don't play with electricity!
As someone who does streaming for kpop - make sure you’re on at least 50% volume and like after watching for the first 30 minutes minimum. Comment once to twice each time you watch the video, with unique comments. You need to watch at least half the video for it to count but also you want to make sure you’re watching until the end to make sure the drop off rate doesn’t get too high

Electrician here, ya absolutely don’t do this. Even if you’re like me we all know how stupid this is unless you work in an extreme control i environment (which most of you are not no matter how nice your personal workshop is) BE SAFE
There are better and safer woodburning techniques. Solid-point burners are similar to soldering irons. Wire nibs use a current to heat the wire, but only 120V.

Styropyro made me aware of the dangers of microwave transformer and once you said that word I gasp a oh gosh ... I know my way around electricity and electronic and the that kind of power still frighten me enough to not even want to open a microwave. You've forgotten to properly discharge the capacitor your screwdriver slip while dismantling it and you're dead. You brush a contact you're dead, you look at it sideways you're injured ... or dead. What's more frustrating : it's harder to get into a recent phone which is pretty much harmless unless you plant a nail in the battery than getting inside a microwave ... go figure.

@@Begeru of course you can. That's not the point. What I was saying is that electrical safety is taught in all kinds of different classes in college. Heck I once took an electrofishing course. But I also learned it in physics labs and chem labs and when working with small appliances or engines.

I still stand by it. Regular wood burning art is the best. These fractals do look pretty, but is it worth risking your life? My sister does wood burning the healthy way. With an actual wood burning set, a lovely piece of wood she very carefully selects, knowing what she wants to burn onto it, and artistic skill. (she also does bridal henna and has a very steady hand, I'm so proud of her) Fractal wood burning isn't art, it's a mad scientific experiment.
You probably just saved my life here... I'd watched a video earlier this week with that type of wood burning and had planned to try it my self tomorrow. Now I've completely scrap that idea and am 'just' focusing on "ordinary" wood burning with a propane torch. The ironic part is that I work for an insurance company as the chief developer for our personal accident product.
@@cairrean2412 there is, neon sign transformers are safer and don't involve dealing with potentially charged capacitors. It's still not safe. But with proper precautions can be done safer. Notice all the accidents involve being near and handling a potentially energized system. This video is a great reminder not to get comfortable when dealing with electricity.
@@TheRealWilliamWhite - I guess if you could isolate both the subject (the wood piece) and the transformer then it could be done safely. But then we're a long way from a 'hack' or diy project. And as stated in the video, some of the victims were electricians.
@@J.K.Builds definitely, doing this safely is a lot more complicated then just whack open a microwave plug one end into the mains line and the other to a pair of electrodes and make sparks. It requires safe guards and safety precautions at every level.
I looked up "fractal wood burning" just to see what the results looked like and I was so happy to see this video at #2 and the video about this video being banned at #3. In fact, the first 10 or so videos I saw were either videos warning about the dangers or had disclaimers telling people to not try the activity at home!
Yes! Now when I look up fractal wood burning I get the same thing but two weeks ago when this video first came out I looked it up and all the top videos were just tutorials
So I was considering doing one. And with my father owning a woodworking shop I would have had access to all the tools needed to make one, from following a how-to video. But now I shudder at the thought of even attempting something so dangerous. Had I not been a fan of h2ct I would have not known the dangers of this horrible hack and possibly died. Thank you Anna for this, I'm glad someone is looking out for their viewers. A single lapse in judgment can cost you everything.
People really need to spread the word on this. Seems a lot of people have recently heard about this idea. But this stuff can easily kill you, and it will hurt the whole time. One person I heard talk about this who survived the experience say they lost their sense of time. It felt like eternity. Nasty way to die.

Me too! And this is not to say I’m selling myself short or that anyone should “sell themselves short”, but recognizing one’s limitations and realistic skill level(s) is so important.
My friend actually sent me a video of fractal wood burning and she said she wants to do it, but I sent her this video and she now knows how dangerous this hack is.
I need to share my experience because I'm someone whose lost someone directly to this "hack". in August 2019, my Dad was learning how to do this with his son-in-law, his son-in-law stepped away to go inside and left my dad to clean up everything. My dad was making a beautiful piece for his wife to surprise her for Christmas. When he went inside, my dad was left in the garage with all the wires and stuff used to create this. Something malfunctioned and he ended up getting electrocuted. He was gone before he hit the ground, and in that instant everything changed. Please DO NOT TRY THIS. EVEN IF YOU THINK IT LOOKS EASY, PLEASE. I LOST THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN MY LIFE TO THIS STUPID CRAFT. Dozens of people have died trying this in Canada as well, and it's not talked about enough. A craft is not worth your life, please even if you think you're confident; DON'T DO IT.

I believe some similar effects might be produced by "spalting," which is the result of a fungus infecting the wood. You can even inoculate wood with the fungus to produce the effect artificially.

It's so sickening that UA-cam will aggressively go after some channels for the smallest thing while allowing and sometimes even actively promoting dangerous content.
It's really beyond ridiculous that true crime channels that are aimed at adults - especially the ones with the "you must be 18+ to view" thing - can't even allude to some crime occurring (even when they aren't showing photos/video) but UA-cam is actively fine with promoting content that is confirmed to be killing people, aimed at all audiences so some children are even dying.

They're more upset about people saying words like "murder" "suicide" or "eating disorder" in their videos (making creators have to walk on eggshells and find new ways to talk about those subjects or even mention the words lest their videos get taken down or age restricted and demonetized) than showing dangerous life hacks that kill people.

I've been in a Woodworking school, all of our teachers were very experienced and would always prioritise safety above everything else. We had to design and craft a small cabinet for one of our end of the year project, and one student wanted to fractal burn his cabinet because It'd look cooler, and his teacher threatened him like "If you try to make or i even see a small fractal burn on your cabinet, you not only won't get your diploma, but I'll EXPEL you from the school, and that's if you're still alive, GOT IT?!" The guy fortunately listened and ended up opting for a simple and safe wood burning with an engraver, but imagine if he did it anyway 😨

By uploading to UA-cam you agree under the standard UA-cam license that any content you upload can be used by UA-cam to promote the site. That's pretty much true for any social media company. They're not legally obligated to compensate the creator as scummy as it looks.

Microwave transformers are one of the most horrifyingly dangerous things an amateur can get their hands on, and fractal wood burning is far from the only immensely dangerous thing they are featured in on youtube.
yep, microwave transformers (or disassembling microwaves in general) can still be lethal even if the microwave hasnt been plugged in for a while, and as she said, even experts who use them still die doing it
i did a year of electric work for my schools mandatory tafe subject, the amount of safety needed just to even setup one of those things is mindboggling, you put your thick as fuck rubber gloves on, rubber boots, eye protection, you ground yourself, ground the table, connect up the transformer using special clips that are fully rubberised under the constant insntruction of the bloke teaching us, and the arc that came out of the rod used for the demonstration was massive
Yup experts either don't mess with them or rewind them for low voltage high current. They are just stupid to use. Experts that do fractals use neon supplies and switch it remotely, never go near anything plugged in with bare leads.

Everyone needs to recognise this practice!! Because of your video and others.... When i walked into the maintenance area of the property i manage.... I saw wood pieces with dractal burning on them. I had just watched this video and knew rhat it meant our maintenance guy had been doing that in our shop. A) its not his job to be making wood art at work. B) the liability to the company we work for is astronomical. I immediately let him know how inappropriate and danferous this was and followed it with a write up with no second warning option.
I work in a scenic carpentry shop at a university. We have a bunch of teenage theatre majors who are all artists, and one of them mentioned doing this on one of their projects. I about bit their damn head off. Not only would the liability be enough to get our program shut down, I'm also not cleaning up after a mistake like that, both paperwork-wise and physical cleaning. Luckily the threat of expulsion and blacklisting from the union is enough to get them to straighten up and away from this kind of stuff but they really do not realize how close to death they come with just the TABLE SAW, let alone fucking with electricity like that. I'm just glad the electricians/lighting students are in a different shop.
My son just came home from his first day of school and asked me to send this video to his wood shop teacher. His teacher was going through the year's plans and told the class they are going to do fractal wood burning later this year.

The only video I've seen that could possibly compete with the danger of this hack is one about how to make your own DIY wood chipper / garden shredder. This involved removing the blades from knives and welding them to a motor inside a plastic bucket. If anything goes wrong with the weld job at all, the blades will fly off at knee height, and the plastic isn't going to stop them. Do NOT attempt to do this. I don't know if there's anyone who has gotten hurt, and I don't want there to be.
That sounds like a crazy dangerous idea. Even if the blades never come loose, I don’t think that a plastic bucket could be counted on to not break apart when being struck by high speed chunks of wood.

I also want to point out that even getting the microwave transformer from an old microwave is highly dangerous. Inside of modern microwaves,(even if its been disconnected from power for months and sometimes years) there is still a HV capacitor that holds charge for a long time. If you touch the wrong thing in a microwave even if its disconnected, you can still die; the capacitor can hold charge for years and still deliver enough power to stop your heart. TLDR; do not mess with microwaves unless you have electrical engineering experience.
This comment needs to be higher up, so many devices have a capacitor that can give you a shock.
Luckily for me my "learnt it the hard way" was just with a disposable camera (I worked in a photo lab) and while I always removed the battery before doing battle with the casing for the actual film, the flash had apparently been charged and I got enough of a shock to make me yelp (which is unusual for me with pain), burn my finger and have extreme hair frizz (which made the whole thing look cartoonish, but it was no joke). Luckily my finger healed (got first aid burn treatment straight on it), but that capacitor had only charged from a single AAA battery! I dread to think what the capacitor in anything that plugs into the mains could do.

yup! microwaves are DEATH BOXES, and should be treated as such. 2kv at pretty high current is not a joke too. HV capacitors, high voltage and current transformers, and the scary magnetron (that could even have a beryllium ceramic ring on it that is highly dangerous/carcinogenic), all around not worth it for some dumb stuff, if you need HV just get a proper supply like a neon transformer that has more safety features

The capacitor doesn't care what's the power source, mains or AAA battery, what it delivers is expressed in Joules and this is what determines the shock you'll receive.
Plus, there is a high voltage transformer (it's switch mode) into cameras that step up the voltage from a pair of 1.5v batteries (or more) to 320v.
So I checked the specs of a random microwave, the capacitor is 1.07uF and the voltage is 2400v , so that's 3.08 Joules.
A Flash capacitor depends on the camera, but I found 220uF being used in one, at 320v that's 11.264 Joules.
Which means the capacitor in the flash camera stores more energy than the capacitor in the microwave.
No, the capacitor will not hold a significant charge for years. Months maybe. And it's pretty simple to discharge it.
It's unbelievable that UA-cam would ban a warning video that explains the deadliness of a hack. Shame on them, and good for you for fighting for the truth to be told.
If I were a liability lawyer and I heard about that action, I'm not sure I'd be able to stop salivating. I'm not sure how I came across this video, but I'm glad I saw it. My husband is a woodworker and people frequently send him things about the beautiful projects he could do and he's always telling them that it is extremely dangerous and he will NOT be doing it. But it continues, so I'm glad to see a video like this. I only wish that the video was split so that it focused on the dangers and had a title like "Fractal Wood Burning Dangers" so it was easier to share.

There is another version of the video because this one was initially taken down by YT, but the other one just has the fractal wood burning section and is still up.
One of the things they don't tell you and that you didn't mention is that you don't actually have to touch this to be electrocuted.
In the example at 11:50, you'll see him lift the electrodes off the wood and an arc continues between the electrodes. Well if your hands or legs or anything are closer to the electrodes than the wood is, that arc will redirect itself to the path of least resistance (i.e. you). Especially if you're using alligator clips and your fingers are a centimeter from the exposed metal, when that arc breaks, it can easily just whip around and attach to both of your hands.
I would bet that most of these people who died never touched any part of the metal or wood. They pulled up an electrode and the arc connected to their body.
If you want an idea of something closer to what you're dealing with than mains voltage, just look at any of the "electrical substation disconnecting" videos on UA-cam. There's a reason no one is anywhere near those things when they disconnect.
Just for numbers, it takes about 30,000 volts per centimeter to *start* an arc, but only about 30 volts per centimeter to maintain an arc. US mains voltage will maintain an arc of about 4cm, UK/AU mains voltage will maintain an arc of about 8cm but the voltage from a microwave transformer can maintain at least a half meter arc. Your circuit breakers will disconnect just from the power requirements, but not right away and the damage will already be done.

Straight up. Anything dealing with high voltage isn't worth it unless you're willing to devote lots of time and money to make it safe. I'd only ever stumbled across one video of fractal woodburning and the person who did it had an entire room devoted to it and went into another room to turn on and turn off the power. I thought that was how everyone did it! To see someone just holding alligator clamps with their bare hands blew my mind! WTH!

I have a friend that works for the power company, he told me that they must check their insulated gloves daily by putting an air hose in the glove while holding it in a bucket of water to make sure there are no holes in them.
One tiny hole as in pinhole sized can allow electricity to pass through and kill the person.
And to add to the fractal wood burning, there's an immense danger just REMOVING the transformer from the microwave. People aren't aware of the capacitors that can hold massive charges long after they are unplugged. One slip of the screw driver can be just as bad as the fractal wood burning.

They are incredibly dangerous and very easy to discharge into your body, so never handle them if you aren't trained enough to know how to do so safely. They are easy to spot, most of them being silver in color, with wires coming out of the top (if connected), usually with 2 to 3 "terminals" that have prongs that look like flat teeth in this | | shape or that same basic shape with 3 prongs in a triangle formation.

@@flamerollerx01 the game used to be 'catch', but we only used a 240v and a 16uf so the shock was pathetic, only access the same finger. Charging was from a pp3 and an oscillator into a transformer using the 9v as the primary.
Opening a camera crash is a risk too. If you don't know to check the caps you will be given a very nasty belt off the cap. Some use 2 stages of pump and dump tube ignition so you get many kV from one, not serious in principle as the discharge is short, but the weak of heart will be at high risk.
The fact UA-cam banned this video but not a single one of the thousands of dangerous hack videos really speaks volumes about what they value the most.

This popped up on my feed today and I thought I'd seen and commented before, but didn't realize there was a controversy and it was deleted!
I want to say, I saw a video posted on another site showing fractal wood burning, and to my delight, most of the comments (over 200) were just saying how incredibly dangerous it is and how the person doing it is lucky to not be dead yet. No one seemed interested in the result or knowing how to do it. It seems the internet knows about this and how bad it is, due to videos like this. Well done!
Neither did I and I came across it again tonight and realized I had over 800 likes, my comment was one of the survivors from two years ago.
I'm so angry UA-cam banned this, even temporarily, because they blatantly misinterpreted the intent of the video. But seeing all the stories in the comments and you talking about how important it is, gave me the push to share this new video on my social medias I share with my friends and family.
It definitely feels like the dodging of responsibility that they do by claiming "it's not our video, we're just the place where it's hosted" no longer applies when they're the ones posting the video to other places.
Meanwhile, if you have a gun or drugs in your home, one will be arrested even though it is "just the place where it's hosted"...
Yeah I think that they'd struggle to make that defence hold up in a courtroom if they've uploaded it to the official UA-cam Facebook page.

The point of UA-cam's "we're just the hosts" protection is that thousands of hours of video are uploaded every day and it would be absolutely impossible to vet it all. Meanwhile, if you have drugs or a gun in your house, you probably would (or at least should) have knowledge of it. Unless your house is so massive that it's genuinely impossible to visit all the rooms regularly, I guess (but if you're that rich, I'm sure you can afford some pretty powerful lawyers to defend you).
Come now, UA-cam doesn't have time to vet the content they're stealing from their creators! The breakfast video clearly shows that it worked and didn't cause any fires, so it must be fine! 🤦♀️ It's really infuriating how little responsibility they take. At least we have Ann!

I don't understand why people don't just get some of those pictures (of the woodburns) and get a thick marker and a woodburning-apparatus and then costumize their own 'lightning' patterns and burn it on there.
I mean sure, heckload of work, but you'll be able to make it exactly the way you want and I bet there's a way to press/burn it quicker with wire or something, without using electricity, just heat.
And if you don't have a woodburner, you use paint.
I mean, apart from being able to brag to guests that you did this with electricity (and you can't impress the guests on your funeral) then that pattern would be just as impressive when made without electricity.

There are now more vids coming up that show how dangerous this is....so Ann will be pleased to see those. ( she is not ego driven about this! ). There are at least two that I have seen that promise "safer" ways to do it,..... I don't know how accurate they are.....
There are creative people out there: I can only suggest try painting, wood carving, there are heaps more ways to make lovely objects. Building things from papier mache or clay, or that no kiln needed clays. Encourage your loved people in other directions.
It's crazy to me that UA-cam would ban a warning against a lethal act yet leave the videos encouraging such a thing up. Messing with a microwave transformer alone is extremely dangerous as is but to rig it up purely to do this is insane. You're work to speak out against this is so heroic saving lives and bringing awareness to people! Nothing but the deepest and most sincere respect for you and your channel.

We made same fractal wood at the University in the course of electrical engineering. There were a dozen layers of passive protection, including a grounded double metal cage. We put the electrodes, left the cage, closed it tightly, otherwise the automation would not work, closed the second cage, and then turned on the switch to supply voltage to the electrodes. What we saw terrified us, because we knew what electricity is and how dangerous it is. It lays the same fractal patterns inside our flesh. That's why injures so massive.
When I was at school as a blacksmith, we were told to never wear gloves while using a certain machine.
We never really took it seriously and wore gloves anyway because otherwise, you can get small cuts on your fingers from the metal.
I almost always wore gloves when using that machine until one day when I met a guy who had lost 3 fingers and half of his hand to that machine because he wore gloves while using it. The tip of his glove got caught in it, causing the rest of his hand to get pulled in.
I've never worn gloves when using that machine since I met that guy.
I still get people asking me "why don't you wear gloves?" when they see me working the machine. It's crazy how people don't take safety precautions seriously until they or someone they know get hurt.

I’m a traditional silversmith and we use most of the same big tools y’all do; I have made jigs and workarounds in my own personal shop so that I don’t have to use one because I hated the little sand-cuts I would have after using it in school! Honestly the thing gave me awful anxiety using it after our safety demonstration: that thing is so powerful and you have to work so close to the business end of it…. I was always worried I would get my fingers sucked in even without any gloves on!
@@5taceydaisy You should try the wet belt sander at a glass shop. Thick gloves for the glass, water spraying all over the sharp edges you are holding, and knowing that if it slips, it will likely shatter into a thousand possible missiles.

I said it before and I'll say it again: the mere fact that there is no action taken against things that could result in something to this degree of harm is either alarmingly misinformed or horrifically callous. Now the mere fact that they went after something that tried to do good? Wow, words cannot express the gall.
I really think it's time for another campaign targeting advertisers. If the advertisers know the public is frowning on their ads playing on dangerous videos, they'll pull their ads, and put pressure on youtube to change the way they monitor content. It's already happened once, so we've seen advertisers speak louder than users according to youtube. It might be time for a twitter campaign to let advertisers know their ads are running on dangerous content vids and people aren't happy.

Same! I would figure that this is a good way to get a nasty shock like a standard shock from an outlet. That's plenty enough to deter me from trying it, heh. But I had no idea that the transformer would multiply the current so much! That's terrifying! It makes sense thay the gloves would be useless to stop the shock
BTW, alot of people misunderstand, it's not the volts that's gonna kill you, it's the amps, is exiting the transformer, given it's like what the video says, at 2000 volts, the amperage can still be fatal, be it even at 0.1mA, a thousandth of an Ampere(Amps), the human body can start to feel pain at 0.01mA.

Exactly. So much things can go wrong it is hard even for a professional to foreshadow them all. Also, setting 2 kV loose through wet wood is a very different thing to fixing broken wall socket in peoples house. So, ordinary electricians are simply not qualified enough for messing with wood burning.
Yeah, stuff like this is one of those areas where a little knowledge can actually be more dangerous than none. It does not surprise me in the least that (home) electricians have been hurt by this. They tend to be very well versed in the safety issues of house current, to the point it becomes habbit. But unless they have worked in higher powered domains like some kind of industrial work, they have learned the wrong safety measures and it can provide a false sense of security.
So would a lineman suit make it safe? (Metalic looking suit the size of bomb disposal suits) though at that cost you might have access to equipment to give the look in a much safer manner.
Being an electrician does not equal being a GOOD electrician. Sometimes, working with something and not dying for long enough can cause a person to lose respect for the danger it represents. Most likely these folks thought "I'm a professional. I don't need to worry." And proceeded to work carelessly. The main takeaway needs to be: This is deadly dangerous, even if you take all the necessary precautions.
The thing to remember is that this falls under the type of thing where if it was in a lab the gear would be bolted to a table and you'd have a whole safety course just to get in the room while it was set up.
Only for everyone to clear the area before it was turned on. Power supplies and transformers are not something you just leave out in the air until they get sealed away so as not to be a threat. Even then you have to be super careful about the leads.

Just because people do it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. The original purpose of these “hacks” was to save something, whether it’s time or money. Don’t cook something in an unsafe way, using equipment for far too long and overheating it, especially if it takes longer than it would to cook it properly!

I think the main problem is that they're enforcing their rules blindly without any regard for context. The wood burning videos show very dangerous practices the should never be reproduced unless every possible safety precaution is taken but they never mention it and no such incident is shown in their videos so UA-cam doesn't realize anything's wrong. Here, she's discussing the consequences of these actions in detail. However, UA-cam doesn't see what she's actually saying or what she's really pointing out. They're only see that she's showing violent images in her video.

I showed that fractal wood burning to my husband because I thought it was interesting. Another danger he pointed out is depending on the wood, you don’t know if the wood has been treated with anything, the fumes are very bad for you. He was electrocuted on a work site years ago and it took over a year for him to recover and still has nerve damage. Since then, he’s had so many medical problems.

Knew it was dangerous but I didn't know that tons of ppl have been dying from it.
I've messed with microwave oven transformers to try to make a spot welder when I was around 15 but I had the common sense not to touch the mf while it's on. I used a surge protector that was on a backup switch so I'm nowhere near the live circuit

I could see myself trying this, and that’s terrifying. More generally this video has opened my eyes not only to this hack but to how little I research a lot of the content I see / am inspired by. It’s a good reminder to be more responsible about my personal safety when DIYing.
A general rule is if it looks dangerous it probably is and anything involving fire, electricity, chemicals etc you should be careful how you proceed with doing it same with something as simple looking as the polymer resin handling for example and other trends as well that seem harmless on the surface, you should always do as much research on the handling and safty aspects of new hobbies!

Maybe it’s because many children are taught that “microwave is a box where you put your food and press a button to heat it”, and not the actual working principles of a microwave (that it has dangerous components inside, etc). Heck, many parents don’t even know this themselves, so the risk is transferred from generation to generation. We need more explicit PSAs on microwaves, bleach, and all the other common household products which have any element of danger on them. Because sadly many people forget or are unaware that something being mundane doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

There are a lot of very responsibly made videos that use the same parts. The key difference is they come from dry and scientific channels, not cool hacks videos. That being said, dangerous disregard for safety should be banned in any DIY video.

A family friend did this once. He shocked himself so bad he lost his some of his fingers, the only reason he lived is because when he fell the plug came out of the wall somehow when he fell. The whole thing was caught on security video.

Never commented before but I'm helping boost this! UA-cam never should have taken it down. It saved my friend's life when I showed her (she did fractal burning) She had no idea how many volts were going through the equipment and dismantled her things right after watching. I went to an antique market with different vendors in booths. One was a woodworker and last time I went, I saw the characteristics lightning marks on some finished cutting boards. And promptly freaked out because of this specific video indicating that this was super dangerous.

I'm really glad you got this video ban reversed. I've been an Electronics Technician for 26 years, and can attest that the transformer inside a microwave is probably the most dangerous electrical devices in your home (unless you happen to have a neon sign... then you may have a toss-up). We created a Jacob's Ladder in our lab using a microwave transformer. The amount of juice they put out is insane. Seriously. You described the way a transformer works very simply, but exactly right. There is no electrical connection between the two sides, so there's no signal to trip the breaker if you happen to short across the leads. Electricity can and does kill. Good warning video.
Hi! Just wondering, as someone owning a neon sign, are there any major things you need to watch out for? or are you okay as long as you don't mess around with the cord etc?
@@lucac8593 Neon signs are quite safe, as long as you're using them as they're intended to be used (plugged in and glowing). The danger comes when you start dismantling them and plugging certain components in. Neon signs have a transformer that can be dangerous if you were to touch it while the power is plugged in. Use your sign daily, you'll be fine... but if you decide to tear it apart, do a little research before plugging things in when they circuitry isn't covered up.
@@lucac8593 If you leave it alone on the wall you’ll be fine. Just regularly inspect the lights for any cracks or breaks and if there seems to be any damage anywhere do not plug it in and get it repaired by a professional to prevent neon gas emissions, and have an electrician examine the transformer if there appears to be any damage to it.
Other than that, treat it as any other lamp.

Oh man... I've heard about how dangerous that is. I remember when I was young my father said people get killed by microwaves fooling around with their internal components. Those things kill people and hurt the whole time doing it.... I hear you lose your sense of time, too, as if it wwasn't already a slow way to go. If you ever hear anyone say they plan on doing something like that, tell them don't touch it. That stuff should only be done by extremely professional electrical engineers.
It kinda makes me think I ought to have a policy of looking up to see if Ann has done a debunking before starting any new craft project! ^^;

Its worth pointing out that the crocodile clips and jumper cable are designed with 12 to 24 volt use in mind, the insulation is probably not tested up to 2Kv usage and may melt in your hands if you try this.
Commenting for the cause: I almost couldn't believe you'd said fractal wood burning at first. My science teacher told me about it (now) some time ago and the absolute danger of it is genuinely frightening, and the fact some people try it as a DIY hack is even more terrifying. Thank you so much for making this video and for fighting back against UA-cam's ridiculous decision.
I went to college for Electrical and Computer Engineering and hearing about this stuff is painful. We used to joke in our EEMags course when people would discuss conductors and insulators that "everything is a conductor if you throw enough power at it". Every semester in our electrical lab classes, the lab tech would have a seminar at the beginning of the semester talking about electrical safety and showing us this gory PowerPoint of people who were skinned and burned to death from mistakes in handling high power. And he would emphasize that our lab was only rated for low power systems, we weren't even allowed to touch that stuff. But he did include a very relevant chart that's forever etched into my memory, showing the general values for current that affect male and female bodies and their health effects. At a pretty low current, devices can deliver a shock to you that's so strong, it contracts your muscles to a point that you can't even open your hand, often called the "let go threshold" because at that point you can't let go of the wire electrocuting you. Slightly above that it can disrupt heart functioning, and then it destroys more organ functioning, and then it can start to just melt body tissue. Human bodies are basically resistors in that we both convert electrical energy into heat energy, and everyone who's burned a resistor knows that if you push too much power thru it, it catches fire (even wires can catch fire, we once had a fire burn until the wire melted away into a big whole that cut off the circuit, that was a rough night).
Basically if you mishandle fractal wood burning equipment, it becomes fractal human burning equipment.
Tbh I wish we learned more about electrical safety in grade school, you shouldn't have to become an engineer to understand what parts of your home can kill you
Back in high school I went to "smart" camp that was held on a college campus. One day we were having class in a lab space that had electrical outlets on the lab benches. One of my lab mates decided to take a brass brad (little metal disc with two metal legs coming off the underside for holding papers together) and bend it into the shape of a plug and shove it in the electrical socket. Luckily for everyone he must have let go a the exact moment it completed the circuit, because while the brad shot out of the outlet and sparks danced all over the table he wasn't hurt. He was hauled up in front of the head of camp and threatened with being sent home for doing something so dangerous, and the rest of the class got a full afternoon lecture on the effects of electricity on the human body.

As someone who does streaming for kpop - make sure you’re on at least 50% volume and like after watching for the first 30 minutes minimum. Comment once to twice each time you watch the video, with unique comments. You need to watch at least half the video for it to count but also you want to make sure you’re watching until the end to make sure the drop off rate doesn’t get too high

Electrician here, ya absolutely don’t do this. Even if you’re like me we all know how stupid this is unless you work in an extreme control i environment (which most of you are not no matter how nice your personal workshop is) BE SAFE
Yeah, you would have to build an expensive setup to do this safely, and most people aren’t patient/knowledgeable/rich enough to do that.
There are better and safer woodburning techniques. Solid-point burners are similar to soldering irons. Wire nibs use a current to heat the wire, but only 120V.

Styropyro made me aware of the dangers of microwave transformer and once you said that word I gasp a oh gosh ... I know my way around electricity and electronic and the that kind of power still frighten me enough to not even want to open a microwave. You've forgotten to properly discharge the capacitor your screwdriver slip while dismantling it and you're dead. You brush a contact you're dead, you look at it sideways you're injured ... or dead.
What's more frustrating : it's harder to get into a recent phone which is pretty much harmless unless you plant a nail in the battery than getting inside a microwave ... go figure.
I never would've expected I would learn more about electrical safety on a baking channel than in my actual college science class but here we are. Thank you, Ann. The work you're doing is incredible. You are so educational and so many of us appreciate you highlighting these issues.

I still stand by it. Regular wood burning art is the best. These fractals do look pretty, but is it worth risking your life?
My sister does wood burning the healthy way. With an actual wood burning set, a lovely piece of wood she very carefully selects, knowing what she wants to burn onto it, and artistic skill. (she also does bridal henna and has a very steady hand, I'm so proud of her)

I'd watched a video earlier this week with that type of wood burning and had planned to try it my self tomorrow. Now I've completely scrap that idea and am 'just' focusing on "ordinary" wood burning with a propane torch.
The ironic part is that I work for an insurance company as the chief developer for our personal accident product.

There's probably a way to do it that doesn't involve taking apart a perfectly good microwave.
@@cairrean2412 there is, neon sign transformers are safer and don't involve dealing with potentially charged capacitors. It's still not safe. But with proper precautions can be done safer. Notice all the accidents involve being near and handling a potentially energized system.
This video is a great reminder not to get comfortable when dealing with electricity.
@@TheRealWilliamWhite - I guess if you could isolate both the subject (the wood piece) and the transformer then it could be done safely. But then we're a long way from a 'hack' or diy project.
And as stated in the video, some of the victims were electricians.
@@J.K.Builds definitely, doing this safely is a lot more complicated then just whack open a microwave plug one end into the mains line and the other to a pair of electrodes and make sparks.
It requires safe guards and safety precautions at every level.

I looked up "fractal wood burning" just to see what the results looked like and I was so happy to see this video at #2 and the video about this video being banned at #3. In fact, the first 10 or so videos I saw were either videos warning about the dangers or had disclaimers telling people to not try the activity at home!

So I was considering doing one. And with my father owning a woodworking shop I would have had access to all the tools needed to make one, from following a how-to video.
But now I shudder at the thought of even attempting something so dangerous. Had I not been a fan of h2ct I would have not known the dangers of this horrible hack and possibly died.

I need to share my experience because I'm someone whose lost someone directly to this "hack".
in August 2019, my Dad was learning how to do this with his son-in-law, his son-in-law stepped away to go inside and left my dad to clean up everything. My dad was making a beautiful piece for his wife to surprise her for Christmas.
When he went inside, my dad was left in the garage with all the wires and stuff used to create this. Something malfunctioned and he ended up getting electrocuted. He was gone before he hit the ground, and in that instant everything changed. Please DO NOT TRY THIS. EVEN IF YOU THINK IT LOOKS EASY, PLEASE. I LOST THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN MY LIFE TO THIS STUPID CRAFT. Dozens of people have died trying this in Canada as well, and it's not talked about enough. A craft is not worth your life, please even if you think you're confident; DON'T DO IT.
