  • It's easy to chalk the M6D up as just another cheap ToolkitRC charger. But the M6D is incredibly feature-packed, its calibration checked out, so I thought the M6D deserved a fair review. Because you don't judge a charger based on its watts per dollar without discussing many of its features! This is a very long video because there were so many features I wanted to include in the video, but I wanted to find a balance between something that has new info for veterans but also very informative for someone looking at a ToolkitRC charger for the first time. Just check out the TOC below to skip to a section if you need to.

    I just ordered one the other day. I like the power mode... I should be able to hook up a 15A load bank to each channel, set the battery type to power, and quickly discharge the lipo battery connected to input. When the input battery is below the input cut-off voltage it should stop automatically. A nice option when you don't have a different battery you want to recycle to.

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  3 роки тому

      That is a great idea! I've got a bank of 1W resistors I could use, they can up those amps like there's no tomorrow, but with this it's going to be more controlled.

    • @AvgDan
      @AvgDan 3 роки тому

      @@ImaginationTech I've been thinking about what I want to use as a load bank. Instead of doing resisters, I may try out a 24v PTC heater or two, they seem cheap and I won't need to find a good heat sink. Resistors would be better if I need a more precise load but honestly if I could just discharge at 10A+ and not have to closely monitor, I'll be happy.

    Amazing review! Question - did you ever get a chance to check M7AC or M9? Here where I live, M7AC, M9 and M6D are basically identically priced ($2 plus, minus). I already have iSDT D1 (AC/DC), but I want to buy another one just in case, as my backup charger. In case my D1 decides to retire or die, I don't want to be stranded without a charger. Trying to decide which one to go with among those 3 chargers by ToolkitRC. I understand M6D has dual charging option, but I believe that other two also have some nice features this one does not have, plus M6D probably has the oldest firmware of all, it's an older model after all. Thanks in advance!

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  Рік тому +1

      I've unfortunately not been able to do a hands-on review of those units. Believe it or not, I'm still using this M6D!
      Onto the M7AC and M9, here are my pros and cons for each (things I didn't list I feel are trivial or unnecessary "features")
      M7AC
      +AC input (not that useful to me, as I have a power supply at home and various DC power w/ XT60 on the go. But it could be useful to some people on a case-to-case basis. I know a lot of people got the Hota D6 exactly for the AC input.
      +Sliding XT30/XT60 charging port! (I already got adapters for XT30, but I could do without the little bits and bobs in my bag)
      -Only goes to 6S (I personally don't need more than that, but if you're flying cinelifters, you'll need 8S).
      M9
      +600W output
      +8S charging
      +65W USB-C/A charging port
      -No AC input (not a con for me). Though, it's only 10g lighter than the M7AC.
      -I am afraid of the moving screen might be prone to damage.
      Conclusion: Personal opinion is I would go for the M7AC even though it has less power on paper. In practice, I'm not gonna need all that 600W unless I'm going 8S or have some really beefy batteries, some of the minor "features" of the M9 isn't really that useful to me and is in the M7AC as well. Nice to have, but not essential.

    At 4:11 input settings, I see there is P1, P2, ect. Does this mean the m6d will store different power supply settings? Or what is this selection used for?
    When charging my 4s battery's sometimes the individual cell numbers are randomly changing colors like orange and red. What does that mean?
    This is the best video I have found for the M6d that breaks down the features. Thank you for doing this, got you some coffee!

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  3 роки тому +1

      Good call! I missed that one. Just took a look at my M6D now as I'm discharging some packs, and they seem to be input profiles. For example, you can have P1 to be your regular power supply at home, but for P2 you can set it for your field charging battery pack, say a 6S 5000mah pack, so you can set the power type to battery (so you can do recycle discharge) and set the voltage range to the safe limits for that battery. As for the colors, not 100% sure but the red seems to indicate the lowest cell while the orange means it's (dis)charging it up to balance them. I don't usually take note of it since I look at the cell values more.
      Thanks for the coffee! Really appreciate it :)

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  3 місяці тому

      Guess I did! In my defense that usually is determined by the industry not the charger e..g Li-Ion is usually 4.10v max, LiPo is 4.20v, and LiHV is 4.35V, but I shouldn't have expected everyone to know that.

      Not necessarily better, that's your call. Cons, it doesn't have built-in like the T240. Pros, it can go 300W and is smaller. It can charge without balance, just the XT60 plug. Killer feature for me is the continuous charge mode so I don't have to fiddle around everytime a battery finishes and I plug in a new one for charging. End of the day, up to you to weigh the pros and cons depending on your needs. Cheers! :)

    Do you know if toolkitrc uses their balancing current spec as 2x800mAh or is it 800 total?
    Hota d6 Pro makes it very clear, stating 2x1600mAh. I've got a charger with 300mAh balancing and would like a considerable upgrade in this department, but with toolkit it's unclear.

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  2 роки тому +1

      I believe it's 800mah per channel, meaning 2x800mah. While I haven't measured that myself, just basing it on experience that the specs they've put out is pretty consistent with real-world performance e.g. they state their max discharge is 12W @ 3A, I'm getting 12-14W IRL.

    • @ImaginationTech
      @ImaginationTech  3 роки тому +1

      Not exactly ohm's law but close. Power (W) = Volts (V) x Current (A). Your output would be 25.2V (6S) x 6A x 2 channels = 302.4W. So if you get a 12V 30A power supply ( 360W) you should be good (it's always a good idea to not max them out).

      Me too. But considering I don't dispose batteries all the time, but I charge, storage charge, and use the power mode very often, I'd consider the trade off well worth it. The continuous mode is the one killer feature I always use. As for disposing batteries, you could still use the Pb and NIMH modes to discharge to 0 (cells set to Auto), but it takes some fiddling.
