Guys, I wanted to tell you for so long that, hard core fans had a theory for a while on one of this episode's subtext... I don't know if you remember the Season 1 Episode 8 mini chapter where Kei Shirogane is first introduced to Kaguya In the student council's room looking for help... The reason the president wasn't there at the time, was because he was attending a meeting with the club presidents for budgets and stuff, and Kei mentioned she was afraid for him, since there were rumors of a previous president saying something wrong and having to leave Japan, and Kaguya goes on to say that it had more to do with that president's father job relocation... I remember you saying: "That sounds like a cover up story"... Well... In this episode, there's a missing frame, literally the smallest panel in manga that wasn't animated for the series, where after Kaguya said to Hayasaka: "I didn't have nothing to do with Ogino's school transfer, I'm not that cruel" and grins to the side while Hayasaka has this worried face, a panel of the board of club presidents is shown, just like the one shown when Kei was asking about the transfer incident back in episode 8 season 1... This led many to believe, that it did happen, and the "President" in question, wasn't the school council president, but a club president, maybe even a theater club president, and maybe, just maybe Kaguya had something to do with poking the clubs presidents in just the wrong way to make his father's job Transfer a reality... I mean, even if Kaguya is a good girl, you know how harsh she is when she's rubbed in the wrong way... And it fits her personality as well, cuz we know she's very capable of blackmailing and buying even schools personnel just to make a certain someone win a presidential election... Plus, she's certainly a powerful girl, I mean the daughter of the Shinomiya conglomerate? And this school is full of that king of people, especially in positions as club presidents, isn't it? Having said all that, at least to my knowledge, I don't know this theory was ever confirmed... And that's the thing... Aka Akasaka (author of this manga, and Oshi no Ko), loves planting subtleties like this, leaving stuff to the readers imagination, but hinting at a general direction for them to machinate... Just like you mentioned about Tanuma's back story (Kaguya's heart doctor) possibly being about him in love with Nayotake (Kaguya s mom)... A lot of stuff goes unsolved in this manga, but a lot of it, does resolve (many times, in a very beautiful way)... And guys, I just can't wait to see your reaction to the whole thing already. I hope you're having as much of a blast watching this, as I am watching you react to it. 😂 Keep the good work guys! Love from Mexico!
Miyuki’s the goat! - Saved Ino - Saved Ishigami - Literally changed Kaguya Best student council president! Also this episode also shows us the reason why Ishigami is fiercely loyal and protective of Miyuki.
13:16 This is actually a mistranslation (though not as bad as the one used in the VIZ manga translation). A more accurate line would be "Shut up, stupid" since it shows that she's not worth the effort of him getting angry over or using harsh language with. It's also what he shouted back in season 1 when giving Shirogane Love advice. 17:07 The only ones who know the truth are the student council (minus Iino), the principal, the school VIPs, Ogino by technicality, and (as established in some supplemental materiel) Ishigami's family. Since the anime has a bad habit of missing important details from the manga (especially during the season finales), here is a spoiler free timeline of events. *[Previous school year]* * Ishigami attacks Ogino and gets suspended. *[Several days later]* * Ogino breaks up with Otomo out of fear of retaliation from Ishigami. *[end of school year]* * Iino argues that Ishigami should be allowed to graduate despite not handing in his essay on the grounds that he still handed in all his homework. The principal overhears and allows Ishigami to enroll. * Meanwhile, Otomo fails Shuchi'in High's entrance exam and has to transfer to an outside school. *[start of new school year]* * Kaguya hears about how Ishigami was allowed to attend despite not writing his essay, piquing her curiosity. Shirogane has Fujiwara ask the first year students for information since Kaguya normally isn't the one to care about rumors. With this, the student council is able to piece together what happened. * Shirogane goes to see Ishigami and reveal what he's learned, recruiting Ishigami to be the new Treasurer in the process. Meanwhile, Kaguya sees to it that Ogino is punished for his actions by informing the various school VIPs (those whose parents hold particular sway over Japan). The VIPs "convince" him to transfer out and stay away from Otomo for good. *[Sports festival]* * Otomo comes to the festival to both hook back up with Ogino and vent her frustrations at Ishigami. She initially has trouble getting angry at Ishigami due to how cute he looks in a dress (and since it's been roughly a year), only for her jealousy to flare up when she sees him having fun with the cheer team. * Kaguya reveals what she did to Hayasaka and briefly wonders what kind of face Otomo would make if she told her the truth, but doesn't do so because it would defeat the purpose of Ishigami's sacrifice.
As for the 1st point: it's not actually a mistranslation. Yes, the literal meaning is exactly what you said ("shut up, stupid"), but the meaning of sentences isn't limited to their literal interpretation; this is true for most languages and it's especially true for Japanese. The translation given in this sub is completely acceptable given the tone and context.
@@kogarashi_kaito I think the way it doesn't actually work is when her friend agrees with the "stupid" part, because her grades were not good enough to stay in Shuchiin. It wouldn't remotely make sense for her to agree to Ishigami saying go to hell lol
For a little more sadness: If you think back to season 1, when he says stuff like "I want to die, I'm gonna go home" (like when Chika calls him creepy)... This is pretty much how he reacted during the race when he felt everyone around judging him/trashtalking him. So it's likely that during these moments, Ishigami was thinking about all this, and feeling the same way he did in this episode.
It's also why he gets upset at Chika's rampant cheating in board games, or gets irritated when people treat Iino badly, and it's the reason he's fiercely loyal to Miyuki even to the point of memorizing his birthday. He has a strong sense of justice and he's triggered by casual bullying or betrayals. They laced so many hidden details in the show leading up to this point
Even knowing Mizuki liked Kaguya but when she said she was not interested in him, he wanted to make sure he didn't feel rejected or something like that too
The most famous episode and for good reason. As we saw previously, the reason he wasn't held back a year, despite not writing the apology letter is because Miko argued with the teacher responsible for him that it was cruelty. The principal of the school just happened to overhear her shouting and listened to her. Onodera is the only person in the cheer club Ishigami sees the face of, maybe because they are in the same year or because he knows her well. Her face later vanishes when he starts feeling alienation from his peers again after being reminded of his trauma. The lack of faces is to show how he feels distant from others and doesn't even see them for who they are. This is probably a coping mechanism much as like was shown in A Silent Voice. Onodera herself believed the rumours about Ishigami but after getting to know him changed her mind much like everyone else in the cheer club. The cheer club's slogan of "Maji Manji!" translated to something else because it means nothing in English is a play on words. A Manji is a religious symbol found in Buddhism, you'll see it on temples and it's even used to mark temple locations on Google maps. The term "Maji" means the same as "Really?" and is just slightly different to Manji, it became a popular catchphrase about 20 odd years ago and kinda stuck around as a meme. This is also why they make the Manji symbol with their arms when saying it. Also in translation, what Shirogane told Ishigami to write that he later says to Kyoko is actually translated as way harsher than it is. Maybe it's to get across the severity of it in Japanese for saying something this directly as it'd be very offensive to outright say it lol. "Urusai, baka!" would be more or less "Shut up, moron!" if you directly translated it but "shut up" isn't quite enough to get the meaning of urusai across. In a literal sense it's like "I don't want to hear your words anymore", it has a negative connotation attached it it and Ishigami says it in a very manly and rough way like a straight up thug lol. I guess the translation wanted to get across the severity of it because it's essentially the Japanese version of him sticking two middle fingers up in her face.
The small detail at the very end of this episode about the marker the President used to write "Go to hell, dumbass" bleeding through the paper because he applied so much pressure is cool man. Not only did he give him correct advice on how to get out of this horrible situation, but he also left a permanent mark on Ishigami (the table). Really amazing how Kaguya-Sama handles its Cast, especially the relationships between the Main Five. Looking forward to Season 3 and the movie!
I'm so glad you guys considered Kyoko's perspective in this situation. The one suffer the most was Ishigami but Kyoko was the original victim in all this messed. Small note : When Kyoko said she had a happy life in this school, her friend cry after hearing that. 15:46 They're not Ishigami, but that event also not easy on everyone involved.
Also, idk why they removed it from the anime, but kaguya actually low-key admits she got him out. She says she didn't do anything, except bits of info might've gotten over to the sports council, which if you do remember when Kei was introduced, was told to be one of the hardest people to manage for student council cuz of big-shots being there and Kei even mentioned that they apparently got a guy to have his entire family moved over from Tokyo to some faraway countryside, like basically mountainous where air is thin & they'll farm. That's this guy, and everyone in high society knows what type of person he is.
While Ogino was "convinced" to leave, he wasn't the guy that Kaguya was talking about with Kei. That was one of the two previous impure student council presidents prior to Shirogane.
Yeah, some parts after a rewatch were like, oohh. For example: -The girls 'warning' Kaguya when she was tutoring Ishigami, but she dismissed them not just because they were council-mates, but she actually knew what happened. -Ishigami actually yells the same phrase (urusai baka) when he and Shirogane were talking after Kaguya was sick and pulled Shirogane to her bed. -Also in the same conversation, "If he didn't do anything to be guilty about, there's really no reason to apologize."
Best episode of the entire series for me, Ishigami is my favorite character. Interesting detail about the faces, Rei Onodera (the blonde girl) was the only member of the cheerleading squad who was animated with eyes in the previous episodes, and she mentions the incident to him in episode 10. In this episode she has eyes in the beginning but they are gone after Ogino shows up, until the end.
She told story to club leaders and since this is elite school, there are a lot of children of very powerful people among them - from police chief to a literal Yakuza, who does care. And apparently they did something Btw, for Kaguya source material is manga, not novel
