- Stephen Fry and the British Humanist Association have teamed up to explain what makes humanist weddings, namings, and funerals the ideal options for non-religious people looking to mark major turning points in their lives.
The BHA works on behalf of non-religious people who seek to live ethical lives on the basis of reason and humanity. We promote Humanism, a secular state, and equal treatment of everyone regardless of religion or belief. Our celebrants provide non-religious funeral, wedding, and naming ceremonies.

When I buried my grandmother she had an Anglican burial. It was incredibly depressing and hardly anything was mentioned of her as a person or events of her life. My father had a humanist cremation, it was all about sharing stories of his life and the little quirks that made him him. It was much longer and many who came and paid respects had never hard of celebrants or humanism. I know how I want to go out.
it feels saddening that people pay more respect to an imaginary something rather than a real person who passed away, and in a burial, the speech is 90% consistant of that imaginary thing that doesnt exist. and 10% is abiut the person that the burial IS ABOUT. its really sad... i hope your grandmother and father are in peace.
Whilst I don't share these views, I respect his ability to talk about humanism without denigrating religion.
Criticism of religion (and non-religion!), politics, ethics, social policies, etc. is morally obligatory. Yes it should be civil, but to say all criticism is ad hom "denigration" is to support dangerous censorship. We can not, and never have, progressed as a species without critique of our institutions and beliefs, no matter how "off limits" they were, or are, held by some.

He didn't say that at all. I would disagree with his choice of the word "superstition" (although religious people also hold every other religion--tens of thousands of them--but theirs as a gross, and dangerous, superstition; not to mention the majority view the non-religious as delusional and immoral) but you're making a straw man.
Plenty of religious people are of course ethical and lead morally praiseworthy lives; but this is not at all logically (or even practically) predicated upon their religion, which is why the non-religious can and do lead exemplary lives as well.
I am a Baha'i. Baha'is regard all world religions as of equal validity.
Humanism, in it's original form, recognised the religious experience as part of the human experience, although it didn't look for religious explanations of life. latter day humanism is a rather shrivelled up version of what used to be a much broader and more encompassing movement.
Religious people like me have the right to have our own beliefs and not face bullying and mocking
Yes! It's very important to have our own rituals and ceremonies, and that they be authentic and meaningful to each person.
One of the reasons I got involved in humanism many years ago was because of the ceremonies offered for people who stood apart from the norms and conventions, for whatever reasons. It would have been good to have a homosexual couple shown for the marriage as if anything humanism is about inclusiveness.

The desire of most people to clothe the important events of their lives in ceremonial is in itself a convincing proof of humanities inherently religious nature. Humanist funerals, humanists weddings and humanists naming ceremonies are in themselves religious events and confirm our need to find ways of responding to the metaphysical dimension of our existence.
Religious means believing in a religion, there’s nothing about celebrating life that is inherently religious...
So true, I agree. People cannot and will not remove or distance themselves from the transcendental nature of existence no matter how hard they try.
I'm very new to humanism, but still, here are my 2 cents: What those rituals and ceremonies are evidence of, is our need for meaning, the human drive to search for meaning. Humanists (in general) reject an imposed meaning that comes from a religious system of beliefs, while giving life their own meaning. There's a strong connection between humanism and existentialism.
No it's a way of people/ family to come together celebrate/ remember a loved one with some ceremony to it.
There is no calling on a bigger than us force/ something/ God
It's just a way to be a bunch of people with a similar goal (celebrating/ remembering) someone important to them
Ceremonies or marking important events in one's life predates organized religion. Then religion came & appropriated these ceremonies.

Well... I've listened to Stephen being reassuring and wise, and I've read all the comments below. I haven't believed in a god for many years, and I believe that when you die - that's it. I feel secure in my belief in myself as a conscious being not dependent on any god. But I do respect those that need to believe in a higher being that is responsible for, or oversees, our lives. Organised religions do provide moral conduct and structure for millions of people. Although, many people in this world don't seem to have even the opportunity to choose what they think or believe. I probably have views like the Humanists, but I just don't want to join a club.

Humanism ceremonies perhaps should be inviting to all not just breeders , being a religously abused person, hungry to see us view each other in love not judgemental myth rantings. Humanities survival depends on our will to learn to nurture rather then war. Repair rather then deplete. Be fair to the earth and perhaps be a better human creature.

the same way religious wedding are, but without priests, and the speech is about THE COUPLE and not the imaginatory thing that you guys believe in. its about the couple instead of.. whatecer you guys hear at your weddings, that doesnt even include yourselves. basically a religious wedding but actually good and the wedding being about the couple.

Is it neccessary? I mean why do we need ceremony? Actually I did not think before watching this video. Do I need this kind of ceremonies? Still do not know. Maybe my social environment is not fit to that. I do not have any non religious friend. So in that loniness it sounds funny to me.
Were literally the exact same as you but the difference is that we don't believe in religion, we celebrate the exact same things but the difference is that we just don't bring priests.
well yeah it is necessary, because for us, non believers, wedding is a cwlebration of the couple's eternal love and happiness, not dependance on god or whatever you guys talk on your weddings, i guess religious weddings are all about the couple being married to god😂

There was a gay male couple (both coloured 'red' for weddings) chatting with a celebrant at one stage.
British Humanist Association thanks for replying!! but tbh it was really not obvious - like the narrator was saying "working with families" or smth at the time so i thought that those three ppl (0:42) were part of the couple's family. and i assumed that bc the narrator, stephen fry, is gay, and to me the whole point of humanism is to be accepting and liberal, that there'd be at least one blatant and obvious same sex couple. js.
and if i, a card-carrying homosexual, who was looking out for gay couples, couldn't spot it, then maybe it isnt proper representation.
As a humanist I do not label people by there sexuality. So if your only concern regarding this video is that their is not enough LGBT couple's then you are not listening to the message it is trying to get across. Please do not focus and pigeon hole people like that we are all human and that is the only way we should be seen. IMO

Humanists welcome same-sex relationships. I'm not aware of any religions that do, certainly most do not and some are prepared to practice violence or discriminate against same-sex couples. But, yes, the video would have been better to show an example of a same-sex relationship. I bet Stephen Fry would agree!

My father had a humanist cremation, it was all about sharing stories of his life and the little quirks that made him him. It was much longer and tailored to his life and not an imaginary man.
Religion is just 5th 6th 7th century mentality and it really doesn’t belong in the 21st century of reasoning , logic and science not dogmatic indoctrination . It belongs in the past ,that’s where God is.
