Nice work, John. We had the black screen problem, too. So, just as you did, I pulled the two glove compartments out, jiggled wires, and the screen came back to life. Thanks to you, I didn’t have to take it to the dealer’s. I appreciate you putting out this video. -Steve
I just changed my cabin air filter today and my infotainment screen was blank. Thanks to this video, I removed the bottom glove compartment again, I reached above the cabin air filter and jiggled the large black wires and discovered the 3rd connector from the left(blue) was the culprit, just like you said. The screen will flicker if just bumped, so I made sure to seat the blue connector correctly and it no longer flickers if I bump it. Thanks John!!
Dang...mine stopped working 2 days after dealership changed cabin air filter. I mentioned it to them and they had no clue and said not related. I've tried various things over the past 4 months to no avail...until I saw your post this evening. 10 minutes later, my display is back on! Thanks for posting! Chevy Sux!
Thanks for this video! In February I bought a used 2015 with only 12k miles and had it only 3 weeks when the screen went blank. I called the dealer and he said the HMI module was $800 bucks!! After reading the comments here I realized it happened right after I changed the cabin air filter. Wiggled the blue plug and it's been fine since. Thanks Guys!
I used to be a GM service manager- I've seen this so many times and almost always right after a cabin air filter change. The connectors they use suck- some even need the pins pulled out and adjusted for pin tension. This is going to be a problem long term for trucks used off-road especially. Good find!
This happened to my truck today after the dealership changed my cabin air filter and they had no idea what happened. Thank you so much for the video you just saved me a 200$ appointment just to have a tech try and figure it out with no guarantee of fixing it.
Thank you! This was my exact problem and fixed it. I was about to take it into the dealership. Must have knocked it loose changing my cabin air filter. You are a life saver!
I cannot thank you enough for this video. I closed my glove box on my 2015 Chevy Silverado and instantly the screen on my radio went out. The manual controls still worked but the touch screen and display both were not working. I tired On Star, unplugging the battery, removing the fuse and nothing worked until I saw your video. 6 screws later and a little wire jiggle and install the display returned.
I was in the same boat as a bunch of the commenters! Changed my cabin filter and after screen was black. This video saved me a bunch of time! Much appreciated John!
Can’t tell you how thankful I am for this. Took my 2015 Chevy Silverado in three times to the dealer while I was under warranty and they had no solution. Incredibly frustrated at them since the fix was as simple as plugging in a loose wire.
My 2017 Sierra started freaking out, selecting random menus, setting random waypoints on GPS, and flipping through random radio stations. Eventually the screen would lock up. Reset all my connections and tightened the blue connection on the far left side of the module. Seemed to fix it right up. Thank you, wouldn't have thought to check the HMI.
Thank God i found this video...worked like magic..i changed my cabin air filter today and when i started my truck no screen, must have bumped that connection. This video just saved the day. Someone buy the guy who figured out this fix a beer!
I searched and I searched for months, finally saw this video and had it fixed in minutes for my 2016 Chevy Malibu. Man am I happy. Thank you for the video
On the passenger side foot well, I found the hdmi box that had the blue cable going into. My cable was loose to the point it was ready to fall out, I pushed it in and felt it snap in. No problems since.
Thanks for this post. I have a 2017 Denali 1500 that has been blank a couple of times but after having a oil change at the dealer yesterday it died and I couldn't get it back on. They tried to get me to replace the cabin filter so I know they were there. I had appointment tomorrow until I read your post. I never could see the color of the cables but one cable touched and it would come and go so I taped it to the brace and now I can't make it fail. Thanks again
WOW - one of the best fix-it videos I've ever seen! I didn't have to sit for 15 minutes watching some useless screws coming off. You explained everything in detail and I'm sure helped tons of people. GREAT JOB !!
did you get yours fixed i just came back from friggin car max they told me to go to dealer said the entire system needs replacement and there on back order or cant even get me a new one with a warranty?? brrrrrr. sounds like a load of crap.
Tried it, WORKS AMAZING, There is a Blue wire with a Ground connection on it just wiggle it a-little and turn your ignition on, Great video man, 15 GMC Sierra z71
Thank you, this fixed the black screen on my 2015 suburban. I had recently changed the cabin air filter and that could have possibly caused this since its in the same location.
JUST came from dealer in Raleigh. Oil change with cabin filter. Screen black. They said it must be dead will be 1500.....fixed it with this video's help!!!
Not all heros wear capes...... This saved me today! Only change lately has been the weather. Its got below 0*c here, not sure if that could be a factor. Anyways gave a good smack to the dash, fixed! thumbs-up 👍
is it the blue wire that's connected to a screw like how a ground wire would be? my screen is doing the same but when I went to look at it. it was already working and it's hard to fix something that started working again. but it's happening again
I had the same problem. It showed up right after I changed the cabin filter. I must have hit the blue connector wire. Took it all apart & pushed on the blue plug....Screen turned back on!
My screen randomly goes black but there is no sou d or control for anything. Dealerships said it the modules in my dash not communicating properly. My warranty is almost up as well so not sure if they are giving me the run around or not. I've dont the battery that didnt help at all. Going to try fuses
this worked for me also. Just had my truck in for service and after I picked it up the display wasnt working. Dealer says they didnt go near the radio. Who knows if they did bump it but either way I'm extremely happy it wasn't something expensive.
Problem is the blue USB wire It’s the video output from HMI to display screen but every issue is different I’ve seen bad HMI (human machine interface Modules) To bad USB cables and faulty radio display screens plus there’s five other modules that need to communicate with each other and if one goes bad it will make the module before it stop working it’s called the MOST NETWORK
I have a similar issue but I can’t even control the radio from the small screen in front of the steering wheel. It says “audio off” on that small screen. Had my car detailed and ever since the big intellilink has been black and won’t turn on. I did try the fuse trick and now your video without any luck. Any ideas?
Jacob DeLuca Mine is doing the exact same bank all except mine also says park assist him off on the little screen in my steering column My truck was at the dealership for three days and $770 later and still no radio still no screen the only thing that works on my screen is when I’m going in reverse my back up camera still works I supposed to bring it back to the dealership for two more test to be performed but I’m afraid I’m going to get nowhere once again but a lot deeper in the hole with charges So my question is since you ever find out what it was
nikki5706 I ended up having to have the entire radio and touch screen replaced. Everything works now but it ended up costing me almost $1,300 in labor and parts. Not a fun experience. Hope you get a better resolution than me but it looks like you’re on a similar path. My back up camera never worked though during this issue.
Jacob DeLuca my back up cameras is the only thing that works otherwise my screen stays dark but it kinda lights up in the background otherwise than that I can’t see or do anything ! I can see in the screen on my steering column it says audio off and also park assist off ! I had it at the dealership for three days last week and they charge me $770 then called me up Friday stating my radio still isn’t fixed they have a couple more test to preform on the radio and hmi or something like that and to bring it back Tuesday to put it back in the shop ! They also stated that I may need to replace the whole radio which is going to be over 1300+ labor and rental on top of the $770 I paid for them to not do anything to it ! I’m trying by all means to stay away from that lol
nikki5706 it’s crazy to me that they have racked up $770 of investigatory costs without providing any solutions. They should know pretty quick after running diagnostics what is wrong. I would push back on the cost to replace it all if it comes to that, seeing as they spent all that labor time on impractical solutions... my dealership was very direct. $110 to look into the issue and if I decided to fix it l, the $110 would go toward the $1300 to fix it. Not on top of it all! Hope the HMI module test provides a cheaper solution for you!
Thx a million all I did was give the glove box a good smack and it came back on. Now I will dismantle and fix with duct tape. Remember if the women don't find you attractive they should at least find you handy
I am about to try it tonight. Just got my truck back from the dealership and they said my screen is bad and want me to pay $740 for a new one. I think I’ll try this first
Got a 2014 Sierra, Yesterday the screen started turning off and on ONLY when bluetooth was connected to a device. It would play for about 30 secs, black out, turn back on and be fine playing music for 30 secs, black out, turn back on, over and over again 30 secs at a time. When the radio was playing it seemed to stay on without issue. The problem is ONLY when using bluetooth. About to mess with it now
I have a similar problem with a 2017 Acadia Denali. My fix is to pull the F29 fuse behind the passenger side console panel. I simply pull the fuse and re install it. Everything again works. Downside is that it only last 4~5 days and I have to do it again. PITA. I will check the blue wire...can't hurt to try something else. These "KIDS ON CAD" that design these things need to get off the computer long enough to see that the shit they design SUCKS!! Thanks for the tip!!
(2016 SIERRA 2500 Denali w/42,000 miles) So ..... in hindsight the only time my radio went black was one morning I went to Remote start my truck and it didn’t crank .... no sound from my radio no back up cam .... I tried the fuse thing and the blue/ all of the connectors on the HMI (or whatever it is ) then I did a global reset ( both batteries disconnected completely with a jumper between each batteries (terminal WIRES) NOTTTTTT THE BATTERY TERMINALS (+and-) for at least an hour ! and still a black screen and no Sound BTW also my interior dimmer was INOP ....THATS JUST A SIDE NOTE Today probably a week later I did a remote start and everything is working as it should ..... I have no clue and maybe this was one in a million occurrence but I’ve gotten 4 + hour’s of radio today. 👍🇺🇸😎🤠 I hope this helps someone ! ......It’s Been 3 weeks and still no issues today is 07 Jan 2020 👍👍🤠
My has been doing this for a while why isn't gm taking care of this. Took it in before warranty was up and said they fixed it nope then I was just over warranty Mi and they wouldn't cover knowing damn well what it was. Second new truck with in five years and still wouldn't cover it. F@@ GM!!!!
Sure did bus thanks for the video I just put a new in cab air filter and I noticed after I did that the screen wouldnt turn on I may have pulled some wire or disconnected something without noticing

You Sir deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for this video cuz I was at war with my truck over this and your video fixed the problem in 5 minutes. Thank you!

What exactly did you do I’m having the same problem with my 2017 Chevy Malibu

Much appreciated.

Anyways gave a good smack to the dash, fixed! thumbs-up 👍
Best video ever you just save me $$$ and going all over the internet first video I watch and boom My screen works just like that
Dealership: we can't find anything wrong with it.
Customer: it doesn't fucking turn on!
Dealership: well other than that, it's fine....
😆
Your video helped me out yesterday. Damn black screen bullshit. Thanks man I really appreciate the intel.
is it the blue wire that's connected to a screw like how a ground wire would be? my screen is doing the same but when I went to look at it. it was already working and it's hard to fix something that started working again. but it's happening again
This is the only answer for the problem! Great video
I had the same problem. It showed up right after I changed the cabin filter. I must have hit the blue connector wire. Took it all apart & pushed on the blue plug....Screen turned back on!
Yep. Same here..
same...

2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. XM working but can not get FM/AM. Just hear a static sound. Do you have solution?
this worked for me also. Just had my truck in for service and after I picked it up the display wasnt working. Dealer says they didnt go near the radio. Who knows if they did bump it but either way I'm extremely happy it wasn't something expensive.

Problem is the blue USB wire

Really great deatailed video, three minutes of mumbling and then the solution
is this an easy fix? or do you have to take the dash out?
I am about to try it tonight. Just got my truck back from the dealership and they said my screen is bad and want me to pay $740 for a new one. I think I’ll try this first
