This was great video! I liked how Dr. Grande explained the raw score when one is assessing clients and how this type of score is often referred to as a standard score. How to determine the z score was also a great refresher!
It is clear why we would need to use a standard score for comparison purposes and this information helps to explain the different types. Some of the statistical information seems to go over my head and the video really helped to clarify the information for me.
It is really important for interpreting appraisal scores to understand how standard scores work. This video breaks down a few specific types and is a little bit easier to understand than some of the more deeply statistical videos, even though this is still a statistical concept.
Learning about Stanine and Sten scores was new to me. I understand the value range for stanine is 1-9 and value range for sten is 1-10. It was explained clearly. This was a nice refresher.
+Michelle Robinson I'd also not been exposed to stanine and sten before the reading and this video. It's amazing how much we've already learned about statistics and how much more we keep learning!
Like many before me I am familiar with the z and t scores. I will definitely need to come back to this video when I am trying to differentiate amongst the scores. I also had a realization about percentile that it is not a standard score but rather a rank amongst other test takers.
I think this was a great video because it included materials I was familiar with, like t-scores and z-scores, and material that was new to me, like stanine and sten scores. I like videos like this which has gentle introduction into new information by comparing it to things we already know
This video helped reminding me about z-scores and t-scores, and it was interesting to learn more about the standard scores that I was not as familiar with. The explanation for those were very helpful!
+Megan Blackwell I feel like I have a much better grasp on the t-scores, z-scores, and standard scores after watching this video. I recall discussing these things in research, but I am the type of person who needs to hear things a few times before I can fully understand the concepts.
Seeing the equation for z-score and t-score was helpful. I could always use a refresher in this topic. I find myself really having to slow down and really think about these topics. Although they do not come easy for me, the video is a great tool to use in conjunction with the readings and class.
This is an extremely helpful video! Statistical concepts have always confounded me, but this video provided a helpful breakdown. I also like the detail into different types of scores.
I found this video and the assigned reading on standard scores meshed well and level of understanding was captured. I did like how examples were given, such as Deviation IQs are used for intelligence testing and the Normal curve equivalent was administered as an educational assessment.
This was a great overview and reminder of the different types of standard scores. I would like to get more into them and really see how to work with them.
I'm glad this video reviews percentile rank as I previously confused this concept with percentages. Overall a good review of the standard scores as well!
I agree, Liz. I thought the information on percentile rank was helpful because I find it confusing as well. I also thought the review of the standard scores, especially the T score were a good review.
The chapter in the text was easy to follow because they provided examples, some areas that i needed clarification on were covered in the video, especially understanding percentile ranks and how they are used in measurements.
This video was a great overview of the standard scores and really helped cement them in my mind. I know I read it as well but it does help to hear it explained instead of just reading it. Thank you!
I agree with you, Kendall! I am a lecture kinda girl and when I attend a class or listen to the professor explaining it, I grasp it better than just reading it.
I have little experience with scores of the nature . I computed scores in the past in other programs but it was always just averaging scores. I will need more experience in converting raw scores in the future on excel
This video just gave me PTSD from statistics lol, I think the video was very informative but to be honest I had to watch it a second time to really understand what was going on.
Still trying to wrap my head around all of these scores and concepts but in trying to conceptualize them, I noted a few things. Standard scores are scores that have been converted to an interpretable scale from its raw vale. The mean and SD are set for standard scores. Deviation IQs are widely used in intelligence testing. Percentile rank is not a standard score.
I had never heard of the stanines or stennens before this video, and while I was watching the video, everything about standardizing test just sort of clicked.
Yeah. I am glad we got those examples though so we know now that this stuff isn't mostly just hypothetical and theoretical and that it actually is a heavily used concept in testing.
that was new information for me as well. I too found it helpful in knowing where each was used althought would have likeed to know more about why each one was used in certain places. good video for a refresher though!
Ahh.... good old stats. This is very good info on standard deviation, t-scores, and z-scores. This is one video I will bookmark to watch over and over.
I found it helpful to understand standard scores as it was described how they are used in assessment. Learning how standard scores are used in a practical way is extremely helpful.
This video was really helpful! From the very beginning, Dr. G's explanation of a standard score being something interpretable clicked. I had a tough time understanding this in the text on what a raw score was vs. a standard score. I understand how to solve the problems for z scores and T scores. I think it would be helpful to have some practice with stanine and sten scores... The percentile ranks confused me for some reason. I need to be looking at how to calculate it in order for it to sink in.
This is a video that I am certain I will revisit. I understand the importance of understanding the different types of standard scores, my Algebra is rusty but this helps!
Like many others, I was only familiar with z and T scores and had heard of some of the others, but I did not know how they were used or what information they provided. I thought the video was helpful in regards to the examples given and will be a good, quick resource to come back to as needed in this semester.
This video really clarified how a raw score is converted into all these different scores with fancy names. I think I'm finally understanding how to get a z score. As far as the other types of scores, I will have to revisit this video a few times to understand how to convert a raw score to them. Just like before, I think I will understand how convert different scores better when I actually get the chance to work with real data.
this video was helped me understand standard scores better. i like how standardized scores allow you to compare different inventories together such as depression and anxiety. I can see where this would be helpful in treatment. Good refresher on constructs such as z scores and t scores and the formulas associated with them. is also helpful to know the other types of scores and when/where they are commonly used. I think i might like to know more about why each scores are used in various settings other than the explanation that they are used there. Percentile rank was easier to understand and know its applications/usefullness however it was new information to know how the frequency distribution and curve affect the percentile rank.
I knew what the z and t scores were but I had a difficult time understanding them and knowing how to calculate them. This video was a great overview and gave a great explanation to help me better understand.
I have little experience with scores of this nature. Although I did compute scores for events for years, I do not think any curves where involved in rankings, just averages. I will need more education to convert scores from a raw score in future research studies.
The overview of Z scores and T scores was very helpful for me, Because math has never really been my thing I always mix them up. I thought that I gained a better insight into statistics with this video.
I liked the explanation of all of the different types of standard scores because I have always been confused about what the T scores and z scores are. I liked how there is a simple formula to calculate them as well.
I understood the concept pretty well once we went over it in class again recently, but another refresher doesn't hurt. I did like the number of examples you gave though and now when I hear those terms when discussing testing, I will know we are talking about a standard score.
Math has never been a strong subject for me and this seems to fit into that category. This is a good video to break down the information but I will need to watch it a couple more times to fully grasp it. I need to make extra problem sheets for myself like I had to do in grade school!
Most of these standard score types were new to me, other than reading about them in the text this week, and this video did a great job explaining each and how to calculate them. I also found the explanation of percentile rank useful since it can easily be confused for a standard score.
I remember z and t scores from my undergraduate stats classes, but all the other standard scores were new to me! This video will be a helpful reference to come back to when I'm getting lost in the different standard scores mentioned in class.
This video helped me to understand how standard scores are important for assessing clients and interpreting the raw score. This video was a great review of the several types of standard scores.
This video is a great resource for me to be able to look back on throughout this course, I am glad I have it. It was a refresher from things from my stats class.
Yes, this video was helpful to me as well. I still probably would not know how to do most of them, but the z and t score is a bit familiar. I liked how Dr. Grande explained each of them. Also, the explanation of the percentile rank was helpful to me too.
Great video in relation to standard scores in counseling assessment. I had previously learned about this topic, and this video provides refreshing information.
I am appreciative the explanation of the new standard scores and who/why they are used. I liked the overview of the Z scores and T scores with the examples to remind me how they are used.
+Jasmine Aviles I also liked how he explained why they are used. It is easier for me to understand different calculations if I know the reason behind them.
This was a good refresher of z score and T scores. I did not remember covering stanines and sten scores previously so that was good information. I am very familiar with the percentile rank since I have seen it in use in the Air Force during promotion cycles. I found the blackboard powerpoint helpful to write notes as the video was playing.
Excellent review for me - I haven't taken statistics in may years. I even work with Percentile Ranks (in a high school) and didn't fully understand them.
Well I think I actually understand the z score and standard deviation. I also liked the explanation of the t scores and deviation IQ. I find the examples very helpful. I am still confused about the percentile rank, so i need to re listen to the video and hopefully it will sink in.
I agree, I think percentile rank will always confuse me. Just when I think I understand it, I realize that I don't. The video did help me and I like that we can go back and re-watch them if we need to.
I have always felt pretty comfortable with the calculation of z-scores, but as always, this was a nice refresher. T-scores are pretty similar in terms of ease of calculation to z-scores, but I had no idea they were the preferred method when measuring assessments.
Again, I also agree with you here. Even though there were a few concepts that I was unfamiliar with in this video, I also have been traditionally comfortable with z scores
Very clear and concise presentation of the different types of standard scores. I appreciated the details about the percentile rank as that can be a little confusing.
Yes, Jessi. I always get confused when one of my students gets a score with a percentile rank from a computer assessment. This video helped me to better understand how this score is formulated.
I really enjoyed this video. i had not heard of many of these standard scores and was interensted in learning about them. I also thought that it was neat to hear about who developed some of these standard scores. Lastly, it was a good reminded for me about z and t scores.
+sherrie tilghman I agree, Sherrie. I find it easier to memorize the calculations for finding z-scores and T-scores but still trying to understand their application.
There were a couple of standard scores in this video that I was not familiar with such as Stanines. It was interesting to learn more about these concepts in relation to appraisal.
+Melissa Clendaniel I had the same discovery. I did not remember covering that subject matter in our previous class so it was an added benefit. I found the information on Other Standard Scores such as CEEB very interesting. I did not know how the scores were used.
This was a great review however there were some items in the video that was unfamiliar to me such as the stanine and sten scores and I really do not remember the percentile ranking.
+Regina Ames I also noticed some items that were unfamiliar to me also, but in regards to percentile ranking, I remembered that from our research class, but this video did a good job of refreshing my memory.
Great video. This video did help me a lot in remembering the Ss, TS and Z scores. I have to say, the sten and stanine were new to me. Good to reinforce that percentile rank is not a standard score but rather a way to understand a persons score. Combining the text and the video helped me understand more. Great presentation.
This video aligns really well with the reading. Having read, it was easy to follow the video. It is interesting how much z-scores can do for transforming the raw data. The explanation of percentile ranks was particularly helpful.
+Alicia Zahn I forgot to mention that in my comment, but I do agree that it is really easy to follow along because it matches up to what we are learning in the book
This video was nice to take a look at because it really paralleled what came up for me in the readings for my class this week. Standard scores are important because these are the ones that have meaning and can be looked at. I now appreciate the value of standard scores. I really liked how Dr. G gives the critiques of the particular standard scores as well. It makes the lesson feel more grounded in something rather than just discussing these measures without knowing what the field thinks about them.
I agree, the reading and videos are definitely useful. The video helps a lot, like you say, Dr. G critiques addresses things that are not covered in the book.
Yeah, I like how the info gave more meaning to what they represent. I am not going to lie, most of this stats info is still very challenging and confusing to me, I would love to cover some things in class. I also thought the book explains the info well, using simple language that's easy to understand.
I understand what the standard score is and the math aspect is not too hard. I just hope I remember all this information for testing purposes. This video was very easy to follow which also helped me get a better understanding of the topic.
This video did a good job of explaining what a standard score was and how to compute them. The one example on how to get a Z score helped me to understand what mean/ standard deviation to use in a given situation. The example was to compute a Z score from a IQ score. That example showed me in order to find the correct Z score I had to use the mean/standard deviation for Deviation IQ to get that Z score. Good video.
Its good that this video is good at explaining that calculation, because it is probably the most important conversion to know for appraisal, so explaining it clearly is super important.
This video helped me understand better the standard scores. I thought the book explained them really well too and I didn't find them hard to understand. Listening to Dr. Grande go over them, added to my understanding of them. I just hope we don't have to memorize the different set values for each of the scores for the exam.
Dani, I too hope that we don't have to memorize it either! Other than that I agree that the video was very helpful. This concept is one of the easier ones for me as well.
I agree that I hope we dont have to memorize them. I think i can remember IQ but thats only after several semesters of learning them. There are other measures like stanines or stenns which i had never heard of before, so that was new information. This video was a good refresher for z and t scores and helpful to help remember the information by knowing when each one was used.
Yeah, this video was very helpful. I find this subject matter to be rather challenging, but I feel that if I needed to apply the knowledge I have a very helpful resource to use!
This video did a great job of giving me a refresher on Z Scores and T Scores as I am familiar with working with them, however there were a handful of new standard scores that I have never heard of before. I appreciate the explanation and examples that were given for those that I was not familiar with.
+Candace Fernandez I was unfamiliar with them until just reading them in the text, but I agree. This video definitely helped in explaining and providing examples of each.
The video did help me to understand the standard scores better. At first when reading I was having a hard time understanding, so I stopped reading, watched the video, then went back to reading and it helped me greatly. I can see how it is important to compute these scores. Computing the z-score is easy enough for me, I just hope I will be able to retain everything.
That's helpful advice Brittany! I will start to do that when I get stuck in the reading. The beginning of this video was really helpful, and it didn't "click" as I was reading the text. Computing the z-scores also come easy for me too, but as we move through the chapters, I also hope I can retain all of this information!
I agree with you Barbara, I too was unfamiliar with the Stanine and Sten scores. The information provided was useful in interpreting the information. The information was a useful refresher of things such as the standard score and Z score. I didn't recall the CEEB scores but I found the information to be helpful. I appreciated having the lists and explanations of the different types of scores and their values of standard deviations being explained.
Glad to hear more about z- and T-scores, as well as to understand the specific qualifications attached to other standard scores (mean, range, etc).
I originally didn't care about this stuff and didn't think it was useful, but in trying to compare scores this quickly became very useful

took me a minute but i finally get this . I am so proud of myself. i was so intimidated by this process.
Seeing the equation for z-score and t-score was helpful. I could always use a refresher in this topic. I find myself really having to slow down and really think about these topics. Although they do not come easy for me, the video is a great tool to use in conjunction with the readings and class.

This video was a great overview of the standard scores and really helped cement them in my mind. I know I read it as well but it does help to hear it explained instead of just reading it. Thank you!
I agree! Having both modalities of learning is definitely a plus!
I agree with you, Kendall! I am a lecture kinda girl and when I attend a class or listen to the professor explaining it, I grasp it better than just reading it.
I too was able to capture a better level of understanding through this video and the assigned reading on standard scores.
Kendall, I agree with you. This would be a good class to teach in the classroom.
Robert Roberts Jr. I agree Robert. All of these videos would be great tools for the classroom. I find I always recall information better hands on.
I have little experience with scores of the nature . I computed scores in the past in other programs but it was always just averaging scores. I will need more experience in converting raw scores in the future on excel
I appreciated the review of the scores. Good refresher and reference.
A very nice summary
This video just gave me PTSD from statistics lol, I think the video was very informative but to be honest I had to watch it a second time to really understand what was going on.
Still trying to wrap my head around all of these scores and concepts but in trying to conceptualize them, I noted a few things. Standard scores are scores that have been converted to an interpretable scale from its raw vale. The mean and SD are set for standard scores. Deviation IQs are widely used in intelligence testing. I thought it was interesting that you can have 2 different assessments and convert them to a standard score so they can be compared
I know what you mean Andrew by clicked! I think I heard it too!! Excellent video as usual!
I agree with you. I was able to combine the textbook and the video to really grasp the information.
I think I received better understanding with this video but I need additional information and practice to feel comfortable
Ahh.... good old stats. This is very good info on standard deviation, t-scores, and z-scores. This is one video I will bookmark to watch over and over.
The knowledge that you can compare standard scores is useful information. Liked that the video went over a lot of different SS's.
I found it helpful to understand standard scores as it was described how they are used in assessment. Learning how standard scores are used in a practical way is extremely helpful.

great review of standard and T scores. I would really like to be more proficient in Excel.
Standard scores seem to be the most straight forward component of understanding statistics and statistical measurements.
This was a helpful review of research class and the in-depth description of t and z scores helped me to better distinguish and remember them.
Math has never been a strong subject for me and this seems to fit into that category. This is a good video to break down the information but I will need to watch it a couple more times to fully grasp it. I need to make extra problem sheets for myself like I had to do in grade school!

I really appreciate that this video uses different examples to show how the various scores can be derived.
Standard scores are one of the things I understand about statistics and measurement. This video was a good reminder of how to calculate.
I like that this video clearly explains what standard deviations are and how they are derived
This video helped me to understand how standard scores are important for assessing clients and interpreting the raw score. This video was a great review of the several types of standard scores.
This video is a great resource for me to be able to look back on throughout this course, I am glad I have it. It was a refresher from things from my stats class.
I got a better understanding of stanine and sten scores. Matched with the textbook I am starting to pick up on these concepts.
I have used and talked about z-scores and t-scores before, but the other standard scores were new to me.
The explanation of how to get to a t-score was very helpful for me.
I appreciated the review of these standard scores. This helped me understand the different between percentile rank and a standard score. Very helpful
Yes, this video was helpful to me as well. I still probably would not know how to do most of them, but the z and t score is a bit familiar. I liked how Dr. Grande explained each of them. Also, the explanation of the percentile rank was helpful to me too.

Excellent review for me - I haven't taken statistics in may years. I even work with Percentile Ranks (in a high school) and didn't fully understand them.
Yes, I, too needed a better understanding of how percentile rank differ from standard score and Dr. Grande help me accomplish that.

This video was another good review, I've always struggled with calculating scores but this video really help to refresh and clarify that for me.
yeah, I'm glad we have these as a reference
I agree. The more practice with these concepts the better!
I agree! There are a lot of different concepts to remember and can be confusing to me.
I agree this video did make understanding the concepts easier.
Understanding standard deviation is definitely important when trying to figure out if someone is outside the norm on an assessment.
Z scores do seem to be the most important one to understand and be able to work with.
I sgree. This was a great review as well as a good way to learn some new standard scores. Easy explanations to understand as well.
+Candace Fernandez I was unfamiliar with them until just reading them in the text, but I agree. This video definitely helped in explaining and providing examples of each.
+Candace Fernandez I concur. I completely forgot how to calculate the scores and this video briefly gave a refresher how to use them.
When stuck in the chapter, it was a good idea to stop and watch the video before going through with the reading. I may try this in the future!
That's helpful advice Brittany! I will start to do that when I get stuck in the reading. The beginning of this video was really helpful, and it didn't "click" as I was reading the text. Computing the z-scores also come easy for me too, but as we move through the chapters, I also hope I can retain all of this information!
I did the same. The two resources help a lot in understanding the concepts.
Brittany Pellegrini Great idea to stop, watch the video, and go back to the chapter. I will use this information in the future.
I was familiar with the T score and Z scores but not the Stanine and Sten scores.
t
I also had not heard of Stanines and Stens or CEEBs, so found this video to be enlightening.
I was also not familiar with these. Interesting info!
These terms were new to me too . Very good to know.
Yes! The Stanine and Sten terms were new to me although I remember T scores and Z scores from statistics.
