    lyrics
    True love is a rose
    Behind glass
    That's locked and kept closed
    Maybe just to me
    'Cause my heart's been attacked
    And shattered by tough love
    Bad love
So I bought mine off the street
True love, man, it just can't be beat
    I felt so complete
    Married to heavenly bodies above
And each night I'd look up
    At a bright honey moon
'Cause it sure seemed built to last
And even after my honeymoon passed
I kept right with it, man
Like a ghost to a house it once haunted
    And day after day
I'd steal with my true love away
    To some hideout
    We're left undisturbed
We could do what we wanted
But I started to feel like a liar
    Saying I love you
She was madly in love or mad mean
    There was no in between
    It raised my alarm
    I found I can't make a stand
    I'm her hired hand
    I have to do harm
    One day I got sick
She played me a nasty old trick
    Said, "I need cigarettes"
    Walked 'round the block
    Caught a cab
    Stayed gone for too long
My love had gotten so strong
Just to try being back on my own
I had to go to rehab
All I need is a safe place to bleed
    Is this where it's at?
    Half of no chance
    Steps in a dance
Rest of my life spent in combat
Now I'm the king of the ward
'Cause I'm good and I swallow my sword
And puke it out for the doctor
To write me a new prescription
    Tranquil as a dove
People that have lost their true love
They all seem to fit the same description
I feel cold, useless and old
I wish I was no one
    Take me up, my Lord
    Take me up today
Take me out of this place
Take me up with you today

Decided to comment because I think a lot of you aren't seeing what this song is about. It is about drugs. Specifically heroin. An addict will see this immediately. The line ".. King of the ward. I'm good and I swallow my sword" refers to the medicine Suboxone. They used to have swords imprinted on one side. It's actually brilliant language. The whole thing is a hauntingly accurate description of addiction.

I didn't quite get that reference, as I never did heroin (and don't intend to either), but the "king of the ward" lyric always did ring out for me, regarding an old friend of mine... we used to do a lot of drugs together back in the day, I don't even remember what we did and I don't even want to, but it was pretty bad, one time I had a real bad trip, and I told him "Let's stop this stuff, let's go clean"... he never listened, and ended up in hospital, this happened several times in fact... I always visited him in the hospital whenever I could, and once I finished uni and got a job and made money, I would bring him food, drinks, etc., whenever I had the time... he never overcame his habit, as soon as he got out of hospital he would do it again (even spiked my drink several times, just to get me to do the stuff with him, despite the fact I was driving)... eventually, after I got a promotion in my job, I cut off all contact with him (I didn't want to but it needed to be done)... I am not sure where he is now, but hopefully he is doing better now, I saw him in the street a couple of months ago but as I was in a hurry I didn't stop to talk...
So yeah, that is my story

This song is what make me realize a lot of my favorite songs are about drug addiction, even though I've never so much as touched a joint. I guess my own personal addictions aren't as physically destructive, but to quote this very song, "People who've lost their true love, they all seem to fit the same description."
Wishing the best for any drug addicts out there, and I hope the first sentence of this comment doesn't end up a bad sign.

This is literally THE BEST SONG EVER. I feel like it transcends addiction in a way, and feels like a story of everyone’s search for love and the letting go involved in the passing from this world into the next. It also seems like a magnum opus of Elliott’s life and the culmination of his musical journey here. To me. But maybe you too! Playing it on guitar really shows you the deep, deep bond between the chords and the lyrics.

This is a great example of the difference "proper mixing" can make...this version has been floating around the 'net since shortly after the release of "Basement", when fans noticed it was conspicuously missing from the tracklist. However, for this release, Larry Crane went back to the master tapes and actually gave it a mix, rather than just the raw performance from back then, and wow...you can hear the mellotron, the strings, the subtle cracks in Elliott's voice. On a side note: This is one of those rare Elliott songs where the words work as pure poetry, without the music entirely...I mean, try it...just look at them on a page. It's fucking genius

@@davidlawrence6464 Oddly, "Stickman" is one of the few where I actually feel like it could've slid right into the tracklisting, as is...although I'm sure if I COULD hear a properly mixed version, I'd immediately know the difference, haha. I think my biggest 'gripes' (so to speak) are: A. Being able to hear the original, apparently far more 'extreme' sounding "Coast to Coast", which was considered completed by both Smith and David Mcconnell, and B. Being able to hear what vocals E.S. had had in mind for "See You in Heaven"...the fact that it's so brilliant as an unmixed instrumental is just...wow. P.S. This is a bit off-topic, as it's a completely different record/era, but have you ever heard the Heatmiser studio take on "Christian Brothers" that Tony Lash mixed and put out a few years ago?? Spellbinding...

I think of a Person at a Endless, grassy sloped, flat, lonely, beautiful Sunflower Field...
He feels no Hunger or Thirst, and falls asleep when desired. Daytime with no Sun, just a dark or light grey blue Sky. NightTime with no moon.
An orange (sunset color) glowing star is his only source of light. He can control the earth's rotation of the world by his own will. He can sing in order to make the star Glow, brighten, or Fade/Darken.
The place can feel like heaven because it's a beautiful place, but it can feel like a sad hell, when it's only him.
This voice tone (0:22) He looks at the sky & cries day/night, searching for a connection. But nothing sings back to his plea.
He doesn't know anyone or how he was brought to life, only that he is waiting to meet someone Someday...
This sums up about take feeling about the song.
He's like a candle, He's ignited, but doesn't have much time...
    -The End.
Voices like 0:22 is when he sings for the Orange Star to glow & turn Earth: Day or Night.
    ----------------------------------------------------
I feel warm, whenever he makes tones like 0:22
1:57 I feel sad, cold, and lonesome. Feeling of being pulled away from something that's meaningful to me, when tones like that in the song come in.
Rip Elliot Smith, you're unique & different, You deserved so much more...
The piano being played is soooo beautiful, I want to shed tears... It's almost hypnotizing.
It's pityful how there were many good & talented people out there who lived, but became shortly departed..
That's the thing with true beauty, it doesn't last.
    Unfortunately for this poor.. man...
    I'll never forget about you..
    I wish I could've met you...
Thanks to those of you who took the time to read this.
I hope you "are" or can be happy, that's all I ask.

Elliott was prescribed Gabapentin (Neurontin) for partial seizures, which was approved for treatment of partial seizures by the FDA in 1993. It wasn't until 2014/15 after a string of overdoses involving narcotics paired with gabapentin that it became more clearly known that gabapentin potentiates opioids.

One of my favorite ES songs. It's kind of a shame what they did with the vocal treatment on this official version. The reverb isn't quite the right size and the decay is midrange-y which makes it loud and messy, especially when Elliott is singing in a higher register. In those sections the reverb is so noticeable, it's distracting. Love Larry Crane and I have a lot of respect for his work, but this mix doesn't sound right. Still a beautiful song.

who could thumbs down this? Yes its more produced than the original demo, but it's still an amazing song.

Lovely tune. It's pretty obvious Kevin Parker had this song in mind when he wrote this one. I wouldn't call it plagiarism though : ua-cam.com/video/D_cMCvudZBs/v-deo.html

True love is a rose behind glass
    That's locked and kept closed
    Maybe just to me
    'Cause my heart's been attacked
And shattered by tough love bad love
So I bought mine off the street
True love, man, it just can't be beat
    I felt so complete
    Married to heavenly bodies above
And each night I'd look up
    At a bright honey moon
'Cause it sure seemed built to last
And even after my honeymoon passed
I kept right with it, man
Like a ghost to a house it once haunted
    And day after day
I'd steal with my true love away
To some hideout we're left undisturbed
We could do what we wanted
But I started to feel like a liar
    Saying I love you
She was madly in love or mad mean
There was no in between it raised my alarm
    I found I can't make a stand
I'm her hired hand i have to do harm
    One day I got sick
She played me a nasty old trick
    Said, "I need cigarettes"
Walked 'round the block caught a cab
    Stayed gone for too long
My love had gotten so strong
Just to try being back on my own
I had to go to rehab
All I need is a safe place to bleed
Is this where it's at? Half of no chance
    Steps in a dance
Rest of my life spent in combat
Now I'm the king of the ward
'Cause I'm good and I swallow my sword
And puke it out for the doctor
To write me a new prescription
    Tranquil as a dove
People that have lost their true love
They all seem to fit the same description
I feel cold, useless and old
I wish I was no one
Take me up, my Lord take me up today
Take me out of this place
Take me up with you today
