  • John Preston (author of 'A Very English Scandal', 'Fall' and 'The Dig') is in conversation with Rupert Christiansen about his work.
    About Author
Journalist and writer John Preston has been much in the news recently for the success of both his riveting biography of Robert Maxwell, Fall, and as author of the novel The Dig, on which the recent film starring Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan was based. A natural story-teller, Preston has a keen nose for a subject, and his Fall: The Mystery of Robert Maxwell, recounting the precipitous rise and vertiginous fall of one of the great press barons of recent times was called ‘by turns engrossing, amusing and appalling’ by Robert Harris. Preston also wrote A Very English Scandal, an account of the Jeremy Thorpe affair in the 1970s, made into a successful television series in 2018. Labour politician Chris Mullin thought it "probably the most forensic, elegantly written and compelling account of one of the 20th century's great political scandals ... a real page-turner" and an "entertaining mix of tragedy and farce”.

wonderful interview, thanks so much. So valuable to have a more fully-dimensional view of a figure so often portrayed without any complexity.
