Started out with a 9020 about two years ago as a platform to get my son into PC gaming. It was just an inexpensive way to test if he'd stick with it. Here we are two years later and it's almost unrecognizable as an Opti. It's been case swapped and pretty much maxed out. I'll be popping in a Xeon just to give him the extra threads to give it a little more life in the near future. But even as it is right now with the RX570 it can play pretty much anything at 1080p. He hasn't complained even a little about it. I still recommend an opti (or other older office PC) to build a cheap gaming rig to see if PC gaming is for you.
Awesome! This is exactly why I love this Optiplex platform so much!
@@PCTechHustle unfortunately Dell and the others started to increasingly make their systems insanely proprietary after this generation. So this formula of taking an older office PC, adding a GPU, and maybe a PSU is going the way of the Dodo 😩. Sucks because it really gave old systems that would be relegated to e waste a new lease on life.
@@PCTechHustle i got a dell optiplex for a little bit until i build my own which shouldn’t be to long and i put a rx 560 in it and it runs pretty good
@@wusaint yeah I really wish the newer ones were not so restricted.
@@PCTechHustle another great use for the old office PCs is a super cheap home server. I have a Dell Vostro I picked up for like 50 bucks that serves as a full time Minecraft server and storage solution for the house. Maybe you could make a video about doing similar?
Love your videos sir, thanks for bringing back the king of budget gaming pc.
Thanks! That means a lot!
Very cool, it is thanks to one of your first video that I started to build pc
Awesome! Glad you find my content helpful!
Thank you for the very good review. I'm looking for more info about Dell 9020 for video editing. With your detailed explanation, I'm sure to buy this old pc that doesn't want to get old. From Indonesia.
Thanks for watching!
You could probably fix the loose PCI-E retention bracket by bending the metal flap the plastic thing engages. Looks like it could have gotten bent back a little so the plastic part doesn't grab onto it anymore. That or if the plastic was bent you could bend the metal flap further to reach it. Either way, that looks like something you can fix without much effort from what I can tell. ;)
Thanks for this video. I have one with a bad motherboard and decided that it was time to upgrade when I replace it. 🥰
Bummer! Good luck with your upgrades / new build!
I just ordered the same pc with the same specs and form the same eBay seller. Can’t Waite to get it upgraded it gradually. This video was really useful.
Awesome!
Great video, its almost my exact build. I built mine for around $220 waiting for facebook market deals. The optiplex's are alot sexier than the HP's lol. I got an HP 3770 with the 1650. So well balanced and low power rig that can still perform most situations.
Thanks for watching! Yeah that HP will still do pretty well in most situations!
I think getting the 4th gen intel is key. Don't save the $20 on the 2nd gen intel core processors. Just not worth it.
Yeah the 4th gen is still a beast! 2nd gens are really losing their luster now these days.
I got 7th gen for basically the same price. I5 7500 for about 150 if I remember correctly, shipped from ebay. Is there something specific to the 4th gen that's so important, or did u just mean don't scoop up the old ones?
@@kravvormagagor9595 have you got it yet how is it?
@@nickperez915 wish I'd done by it sooner honestly. I ordered one of the new low profile low power rdna2 rx 6400 video cards to pair with it. Will run perfect with the oem power supply. Graphic power just shy of what's in the newest consoles, but in a pc with a much faster cpu, for substantially less money (bout $300 total).
@@kravvormagagor9595
the cpu sucks , its 4 cores no multi threads
If you wanted to step it up a bit you could go for something like a Dell precision t3600. Still very cheap now days but they came with an optional 625 watt power supply. They're also a much larger unit than the optiplex and can fit much larger, more power hungry cards. They can take up to 64gb of ddr3 ram (either standard or ECC, which is much cheaper) The most common cpu for these was the xeon E5 1620 (4 core 8threads) and at 3.6Ghz are a touch faster than this optiplex. A definite bargain if you can find one at a good price.
I might have to look into those! Thanks!
Since these E5 CPUs are super cheap from China, you can usually throw in even an E5 2690 or E5 2696 v2 for $30 or $50 respectively.
Haven't seen an OptiPlex setup in a while! My first few builds to sell on where just like these, maybe with an i7 2600 and a GTX 750ti or RX 450 etc, gso pretty good for the time...anyway great video! Keep em coming :)
Those are some solid setups! Thanks for watching!
Do upgraded optiplexes sell well? I was thinking of doing one to get more familiar with PCs without becoming broke...if I were to sell this exact build
a) would people be interested?
b) where would I sell it on? / how much?
@@Hassan047 I work with PCs and YES, people love budget E-Sport machines. You could sell within a week or so if you were reasonable. I would recommend selling using local apps, Facebook marketplace etc ...
Dealing with shipping prices isn't fun
I bought a Dell Optiplex 9020 yesterday as a secondary storage/editing/gaming rig (my main PC has a lot of issues and randomly crashes sometimes).
The optiplex has an i7 4790, 16gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, and a 1TB HDD with windows 10 pro.
Got that for $100 with free shipping.
As for GPU, I picked up a gtx 1050ti for about 70$ on ebay.
And now it's all on the way!
I'm very excited to see how it does as a sub $200 editing/gaming rig.
Future upgrade plans include maybe a 10tb HDD and an SSD.
I've personally never owned an SSD so I actually have no idea how fast they are in comparison to traditional HDDs but from what I've heard they sound super fast!
me personally I bought an xps 8700 with a 4th gen i7, 1650 super, 16gb ram as an upgrade from a sandy bridge optiplex with a GT 630, then swapped the case & PSU out. it's chillin in an antec case atm & has been solid with whatever i throw at it. wasnt sure if I was gonna find others who work on optiplex or XPS PCs but apparently there's plenty lol. great video👍
Awesome! Yes agreed! 4th gen is still quite capable on a budget gaming level! Thanks for stopping by!

The red cable hanging infront of the GPU is the Dell Intrustion cable, you can unplug it from motherboard. Just make sure to also disable Intrusion Protection in BIOS. It's purpose is for IT Administrators that really lock things down, they can get a report that someone opened side panel and started messing with stuff. It can be set to Silent Mode (only keeps a log), Notify upon log in, and I forget the other one, I think it makes noise? Anyway if you buy a system like this it will probably already be disabled or in silent mode, but just throwing this out there in case someone wants to remove it. Basically you just unplug from board and slide switch down and out to remove.
Great input! Yeah I myself am a systems engineer by my day job. In my 15 years of IT actually I have not ever really seen these out to use. Likely specific use cases like in call centers, banks, etc
Really appreciate this video. Just got this same gaming pc of Amazon and this video was very knowledgeable

Glad you found value in it! Thanks for stopping by!
case is still a good for sleeper builds, bit warm, but still very doable even without removing any of the internal cages
This is the way.
i got a dell optiplex and upgraded the ram/cpu and installed a gpu and it works great for gaming
Nice!
Built a barebones 9020 with an i7-3770s (4c/8th 65w), GTX 1050ti 4gb (75w), 16gbs of ram and a 512gb SSD for around $250 in parts off of eBay. I even used the 230w psu that came with it for a few months, and never had any issues. I've since upgraded it to a modular PSU and removed the HDD cage with a dremel for better airflow. Runs very cool even under full load on 1080p with the stock Intel cooler
Awesome!
Would asus phoenix geforce gtx 1650 oc 4gb gddr6 work?
If you're using a 3770 that optiplex is a 9010. 9020 uses Haswell cpu's
I put together a similar setup with a 1050ti and 16G of RAM for my youngest son.
Those i7 are still relevant in 2022.
Nice!
Can you send me $100 to get and optiplex for myself😢😭
Love your videos dude...I basically stole your idea and made a video on my channel specifically for potential iRacing users looking for a cheap setup. I used a 7010 with a i7 3770, 16GB RAM, 256SSD, and 1050ti. The stock power supply popped immediately when I plugged the 1050ti in, so I grabbed a $16 400W one from microcenter. Amazing how these old PCs still perform!
Thanks! Yeah these Optiplex’s still kick some serious tail!
The Dell precision t1700 with the Xeon 1240v3 or 1270v3 is a great find aswell ( I prefer the case on the T1700 )
Agreed! I love xeons!
@@PCTechHustle Ive actually just built one with a RX 570 4gb. I was straight on ebay after I left the first comment 🤣
Always great to see an office PC conversion. HP haswell office PC's are also worth a look as they have higher rated PSU's and can run more powerful cards without modification. Just make sure to choose tower or mini towers and not small form factor.
I’ll have to look into those as well
Should also add look for xeon 1230 v3 or higher e.g 1240v3 or 1270v3 as these are all i7 equivalents with 4 core 8 threads, and usually sell for less than i7 systems but perform the same.
I’ve done that in a previous video 😉
I've had good experiences with Lenovo PCs as well
Haswell Optiplexes also support E3 1230 v3 and even the Haswell refresh (E3 1231 v3) after a BIOS update. These are i7 equivalents at lower power draw and no iGPU but for the price of an i5 of the same generation. An ATX 24 Pin adapter costs about $6-8, so a cheap PSU replacement with one from EVGA B-Stock is absolutely amazing. You can throw in up to a GTX 1080.
I just picked up another Vostro yesterday for a friend, it was $200. 16GB DDR4 with a 512GB nvme and an I5-9400. They are extremely good value here in South Africa.
Oh wow! That is a great deal!

Complete w 1TB 970 EVO Plus, 480GB SSD, and 1TB HDD from a previous build that would be aprox another $125.. Windows 10 pro/Linux Dual Boot to match my modded thinkpad t430 that’s also loaded w an Intel I7, 16gb of ram, & 1TB of storage which I got done for $225… spent the last $250 on a Logitech g pro wireless, Anne pro 2, and a 1440p Asus tuf gaming monitor w g-sync & 175hz… $1000 budget got me very very far I’m honestly proud videos like this helped me out a lot thanks man 🤣

If you want to do a clean ssd install in the lower ports, there is an actual dell 2.5” adapter that goes inside of the original full size dell slider and offers twin 2.5” hdd spots. I myself did not know this existed until recently.
I did not know that either! Interesting!
@@PCTechHustle I was just as shocked! I usually just toss the ssd in there or tape it like others.
The part number is 0R494D and it snaps right into the dell slider. It holds a 2.5" on either side for a dual setup. I will showcase this in an upcoming video.
Also, you can just remove that latch and just screw the GPU in like you normally would in a DIY case.

I hope to find some help here in the comments. I have this exact PC, Optiplex 790 DT with the i5-2400 on 3.1 GHz and am unsure about the power supply of the PCIe ports. I would like to install a low profile AMD R5 340X 2GB GPU but it claims to drain 65W at max and I found some specs of the PC telling me the slots only support up to 35 W. Is there any way to make this GPU work without an additional psu or changing the motherboard or am I mixing up the specs and the gpu will work? On other sites I found that the PCIe 16 slot always supports up to 75W? Thanks in advance.
I have a 7010, swapped the psu to a corsair CV550 and added a gtx 1650. Its quite good because it can handle AC Odyssey on high preset at about 35-50 fps. My only problem now is when I plug the power, it automatically turns on even though I disabled all the automatic on in the power management in the BIOS.
That sounds like a solid setup!
Did the power supply fit no problem? I thought Optiplex PSU's were proprietary Dell sized units....
Try disabling wake from sleep for usb mouse and keyboard in device manager. That fixed the auto-wake thing for my wonky mobo. Just have to turn it back on w the power button.
@@cj_zak1681If it's a mini tower a standard sized ATX non modular PSU will fit. XX10 Optiplexes also have the advantage of using a 24 pin ATX power connector, unlike successors which use a proprietary 8pin power connector. Question , I have the small form factor unit with a pci 16 slot but its right next to power supply. Can you recommend a low profile graphics card for the 9020?
There is a low profile version of this same card actually.
I'd also maybe consider one of the new low profile low power Rx 6400 4gb DDR6 cards. A couple frames slower than the 1650 (negligible), but only $150 new and in stock rn everywhere
I like this build and was considering the 9020, but not too tech savy Normally I run 3 Hdmi monitors would this build support all of my monitors. I am familiar with the HDMI slots but the one with the D or P not sure what they are can some one enlighten me on these ports, and if my monitor set up would work?
I’m coming back from training yesterday, I’m looking at a computer with a monitor next to the garbage. I took it, it was an dell optiplex 9020 i7 vpro 32gb 1 tb ssd.
WOW! What an amazing find!
to get it up and running on a decent form (more ram, decent storage, and a 6400 xt for example) gets you really close to new build territory where for about $500 to $550 you could get a really mean machine, so i guess the point is getting everything for the right price
Do NOT use a 6400 xt or 6500 xt on pcie gen 3 sockets. Those cards are severely limited in the total number of pcie lanes / bandwidth they use making them a terrible option for Dell Optiplex builds like this.

Merhaba, this motherboard supports one of the LGA 1155 Intel Xeon from the Ivy Bridge part or the Intel Xeon E3 1230,1245,1275,1280, 1290 V1 and V2 processors. Or the Intel Core I7 2700K, 3770, 3770S or 3770K processors? And is there room for a 245mm video card in the engine compartment? M2 SSD supported? Because I also have such a machine and I want to develop it. I just don't know what to put in it. I have already replaced the power supply with a natural Cooler Master 500W. I have the same Optiplex 9020 i5. I thought the power supply from the MB could handle the power needed without having to plug a cable into the gpu.
I plugged into the GPU. If you get that error that means the GPU requires auxiliary PCI-e power. You might have to upgrade the PSU. Sounds like you got one that requires a bit more power than the motherboard can handle.
The monitor does work when plugged in to the motherboard. I’m assuming that since I disabled the intel integrated gpu that my gtx1650 is working. Correct?

I just ordered a gtx 1650 for mine though. I was curious if any bios or driver updates are required or anything? Or is it literally just plug and play?
Thanks for the video
It should be plug and play but you will want to download the latest drivers to get it operating at the most optimal levels.

But I was wondering what is the best gpu I could install in a system like mine? I do have a new psu so if I’m right I can connect it.
Due to the age of the system I would target mid tier GPUs just because of the power and ultimately CPU bottlenecks you will run into. I wouldn’t really go beyond a 20 series Nvidia card or possibly 5000 series from AMD. It all depends a bit but the i5 will be a big limiter. I’d upgrade to the i7 4770/4790 before making a GPU upgrade
What graphic card should i used in i3 6th gen
Those 4th gen haswells are still rocking it for budget systems. The only change I think is that you should go for an i7 rather than an i5 now.
People are selling off old systems and sometimes you can pick up an overclockable "k" chip which a real find.
However the i7 4th gen optiplex are still the budget kings. If only they were easy to transplant to a nicer case, but that would need another whole video.
This is an i7 😉
@@PCTechHustle Yeah, I was just saying previously the advice would have been to get an i5's, but now i7's such as the one you used should be the go-to recommendation.

Can anyone answer this can I put a 1660 super in this if so would it get more frames and what kind of power supply would I need?
1660 super would do a lot better in terms performance but yes you would need a new PSU. Something around 450-500w
@@PCTechHustle you don’t think that it would overpower the cpu like bottleneck or whatever I was just reading about it
I know this is an old video, but I’m new to the pc world. How would this rig setup perform on games like arma, and squad. Is there a better graphics card that would run a little smoother?
I’m not familiar with those titles but yes this can be upgraded further in terms of GPU. I’ve done this before in some of my other Optiplex videos but typically what you can run into is drive bay clearance issues which can be removed to allow for a bigger physical card and if you go bigger GPU you will need more power from a PSU upgrade
is it there a difference i got gtx 1650 aero itx and it need the 6 pin cable and this optilex does not have it what can i do.?

Can i buy a new sound card for this model as the sound only comes out of one speaker from the rear jack port.
I am sure you can that or buy a USB speaker.
tysm i have dell optiplex 3020 it has I5 and 8 gb of ram will the 1650 still run with this?
Should be similar gaming performance, slightly less because this one I feature has an i7 but the same GPU.
i have a optiplex 7010 SFF with a 240W power supply, would that be enough to support a gtx 1650 low profile card, and if not is there any power supplies you recommend?
Yeah that should work just fine!
Can gtx 1660 run any aaa+ game?
Should I keep the stock hardrive in it and then add a ssd or take out the hard drive and just use the ssd
I’d keep that drive as a storage drive and get an SSD and convert it to your boot / games drive
I have OptiPlex 5050 i5 7th gen with 80plus bronze power supply . Can I install MSI GeForce GTX 1650 D6 VENTUS XS OC 4GB GDDR6 ?
The mini towers version of the 5050 would allow for that. However you would need to shoot for a card like I did here. Something that doesn’t require auxiliary pci-e power
Hello, I have Dell Optiplex 9020 Mini Tower Desktop PC, Intel Core i7-4770-3.4 GHz, 32GB Ram, 1TB (1000GB) SSD Drive and I need to install a graphics card for some simple video editing. Will any of the GTX 1650 on the market work? Thank you for your time.
Yeah pretty much. Just insure it doesn’t require supplemental pcie power if you don’t want to change the power supply
@@PCTechHustle order it, installed it says I need to have a PCIe cable. Does this mean it wont work. I am new at this. thank you for the replies.
I don't get it. I have xeon 1270 v3 which is suppose to be the same as the i7 4770. I got 4x4 sticks of ddr 3 ram and a gtx 1660 ti. The computer is great and have no issue running any game but on warzone I cant reach to more then 45 fps, the gpu usage dosen't go above 60-70% and I don't know why. any suggestions?
Sounds like a CPU bottleneck. Though as you mentioned that is a comparable CPU to the i7. Make sure it’s booting properly and you have hyper threading enabled.
@@PCTechHustle Hey thank's for replying. You mean enable hyper threading via the warzone config file?
No video the bios on the PC
@@PCTechHustle It's on
i have this pc with an rtx 3060 and my cpu is an old i7 and i wanna upgrade. does anyone know what cpus are compatible? (without bottlenecking really hard)
If you have an i7 you are basically at the max your can go
Could i put 1660 super work here
I found one with 32gb of ram and the i7 for 200, what’s the absolute best card i could throw in this? Getting barely 70fps on low in MW isn’t enough but i think it could be pushed.
I’d say at max these 4th gen i7s can handle a mid grade latest tier card like an RX 6600 or a RTX 3060/3060.
Would this be a good budget dedicated streaming pc or should I go for something else that not breaking the bank
It should do pretty well as a dedicated stream box, yes!
Could you edit with this pc? Like simple videos on filmora or something like that
You could. Might be a bit painful but possible. I’d definitely max out the RAM if to make any attempt at editing with this PC
I love budget build gaming PC's I have one myself. My specs are
Case and motherboard is a Dell vostro 270
RAM 16gb ddr3
SSD adata 240gb for my OS
CPU Intel core i5 3470
GPU Asus GeForce GTX 1650 4gb
HDD a 1tb WD hard drive for my storage
PSU is a EVGA 500 watts 80 plus Bronze
Do y'all think that's a good build or no?
Nice!
Hey I was looking into buying one of these could anyone tell me if a rtx 2060 super could fit it in one of these?
It could, depending on the size of the card. Check out my latest video on Optiplex upgrades to get an understanding of what caveats you might run into!
Dell Optiplex MT with i7 6700 with faster DDR4 is similar priced $100-200 range.
The HDD tray blocked my Sapphire RX 570. I had to remove it in order for the GPU to fit.
Yeah that can happen with larger GPUs
I have an optiplex 3020 MT With an amd rx 6500 graphics card, which PSU do you recommend?
500w is more then plenty.
@@PCTechHustle Will a 260mm graphics card fit?
Hey , can you make a video of you testing the stock dell optiplex MT playing CSGO VALORANT FORTNITE Etc
Stock? As in no GPU?
@@PCTechHustle yes stock
Will rx960 fit inside i found one for 70 gbp and a 9020 for 139 gbp and should i reaply thermal paste
Just depends on the length of the card really. Under 10 inches would fit fine.
Thinking of putting my 550 in 🙏🏾🙏🏾 hopefully i can get an optiplex tho😢
550 will work try to get a 560 if you can.
I liked this vid.
Thanks!!!
Can I use GTX 750ti that card fits or not i like don't have any idea
You can but Nvidia off I ally dropped driver support on 700 series csrds
Can we change the power supply to 500 watt
I have a dell vostro pc, the pc is 10 years old . Should i upgrade the psu to increase longevity ?
Don’t really need to unless you are looking to throw in a more power hungry GPU
Hello, I have a question. So I have a 2004 HP Pavilion Office PC that has been upgraded to windows 10. I want to game on it and do t know what to add to it. Do you have any suggestions? Or is it not worth upgrading? By the way I really like your channel and tips!
My best suggest would be to do something similar like this. Though from 2004 it could be a very old CPU not capable of a whole lot. Any idea what CPU is in the system?
@@PCTechHustle I’m pretty sure that it’s like an old intell pentium. I will have to go check…
Yeah I’m sure you are right. It will struggle with todays modern games but maybe throw in a cheap GPU and it could play some older games
@@PCTechHustle what graphics card do you think I should put in there that can handle games like fortnight?? By the way this pc already has an upgraded EVGA power supply and a asus motherboard that isn’t stock…??
I have this pc with 32gb of ram GTX 1650 graphics card with the Same i7 and it not the best gameing computer but it gets the job done
Awesome! Yeah a great entry level machine that still games quite well!
Will this be good for music production? Can it be upgraded to 32gb of ram?
I’m not super familiar with the hardware requirements for music production but yes this system can be upgraded all the way to 32GB
@@PCTechHustle Thank you
hi! i recently got an 9020, but i wanna know the top of the top build i can make, anyone can help me with that research? at the moment i have 16gb ram, i7 4790, ssd 120gb and hdd 1TB, i believe that the max ram its 32gb DDR4? for the GPU im between gtx1060 6gb or gtx1650 4gb...
Yes max is 32GB, though honestly if just gaming you won’t need more than 16GB really. GPU I’d say what you mentioned is a good balance. Newer GPUs will always push more frames but you don’t want to go too nuts to create a CPU bottle neck.
@@PCTechHustle hello! i work with design apps ClipStudio, Photoshop, Maya, etc... thats the reasson of 32gb ram and if i can run some games its a plus!
Good video but many I would really have rather seen real world tests instead of gaming benchmarks. I know they are a metric that is commonly used but in my real play experience they are not very accurate. That said I am getting a 9020 MT with a i7-4790, 16gb ram, 500gb hdd and I will throw a 120 or 240gb ssd in there for boot. Got an RX 560 4gb card coming as well so my wife can play fortnite, RAFT, and some other games with my son with no issues. Should be a big step up from my Optiplex 780 with Core2Quad, 16gb ram at 1066mhz and an R5 430 2gb DDR5 gpu
I’d love to hear some ideas of other things you would like to see tested. I will try to incorporate those!! Great PC find too that you described!
Can you add the GTX in a small version of the optiplex 9020?
Yep! There are some low profile versions of the same card.
Sir i have a problem plz solve i am your big fan sir my ssd was detect some time nad some time detect
1st wow what video👑👏👏👏
Thanks for watching!!!
Any chance it would make sense to pair an RX6400 with one of these old PC's? My job is scrapping some old i7-6700 HP's and I've wondered if it would be worthwhile.
Rx6400 would be limited to pcie 3.0 which will hit performance as it's a pcie 4.0 card 4x card so expect 10-15% performance loss.
^^^ exactly the new “cheap” AMD cards unfortunately don’t work great with pci-e 3.0
@@PCTechHustle dang. That stinks. I hate the idea of paying more for a used 1650 than a new 6400.
