Many years ago I found a french horn in a junk shop. I couldn't just leave it there, especially as it was super cheap. So I bought it, took it all apart, cleaned and repaired all that was broken (which was alot) and reassembled. I then sold it on via a french horn teacher I knew. It made a nice change from the pianos I unsually restore as my main job.

I loved the forceps idea for working in tight spaces to get the string to go where you'd like it to go. For my double Horn I haven't really needed it but on this triple I can understand it's need. Great idea!

Farkas said at the end of the first track of his legacy cd: “when I’m not able to lift it, I will no longer play it”, or something to that effect… I think he would’ve stopped playing sooner if he used this triple…

Have you ever worked on a Quad Horn? F/Bb/Eb/Ab

Unfortunately, as far as i'm aware, those don't exist...
I would love to see a schmid quad with a second alternate bell (that you can put a mute in, and then hotswitch between the primary and muted bells). But that thing would need 3 triggers (or some ungodly binary trigger configeration where the settings of 2 triggers designate which side you play on) plus one other trigger to swap between bells. It'd put a 6 valve cavalry trombone to shame.

@@dumpicus_maximus Honestly the binary trigger combination would probably make the most sense to me. One trigger for selecting whether you're on the high pair or the low pair, one trigger for selecting whether you're in F/Eb or Bb/Ab.

@@seth094978 Yeah! I'm just thinking of designing not the key mechanism but the valves- a quad horn would be way too heavy, so it either needs to be a triple compensator, or a double horn with an individual compensation loop on each side
so a low side/high side. Bb Basso and F on one side, then Bb and F Alto on the other side

Especially, god forbid, if you decide to add a stopping valve too-
or if you want to go even more bonkers and add an echo bell or second bell-

It's not complex for a French horn player :)

Paxman was using double rocker rotors in the 1960's...very sluggish...they changed.

I should count myself lucky that I'm not a horn player. I would never have the patience for all of this complex rotorwork.

Single F three piston horns do exist, though I'm not sure anymore are being made today. Certainly the maintenance would be easier. That was the style of the French horn as used in France, until they were replaced with German rotary instruments.
