It's been a while since I watched the Roanoke Ridge video, so my apologies if you already covered this, but one of the side quests that would be interesting from a history perspective is "Wisdom of the Elders" where you meet a town being slowly poisoned by a mining company and their attempt to reframe the narrative into a superstitions tale to make the gullible residents believe Arthur is actually the bad guy. In particular, the game depicts a real life phenomenon where old abandoned mines will with water and bring the toxin arsenic to the surface, staining creeks an unsettling orange color.
@eaglescout1984 That sounds like a goldmine for a good RDR history of video or segment of a larger video. That side mission and its scam plot with the "shamen" has always been one of the most fascinating for me in the game. And it's all done with Rockstar's trademark satire.
I never expected margarets silly outfit to be accurate so that was definetly my favourite, btw after youre done with this you should do rdr1 too, would be super interesting
“Geology for Beginners” deserves an honorable mention. Ironically, it’s both anachronistic AND historically accurate at the same time. In the mission, a man named Francis Sinclair hires Arthur/John to collect a series of rock carvings. However, the game heavily implies Sinclair is a time traveler from the 1920’s. There are multiple details from the quest line that are anachronistic to 1899 but _are_ accurate to the 1920’s. These include: Belt loops - Invented in 1922 and became standard for all pants in 1923. Likewise, Sinclair’s pants are the only ones in the game that have them. Transatlantic accent - Invented in 1918. This accent was not a naturally occurring accent, but a consciously-learned, social construct that became popular throughout the 20’s. For perspective, this is the accent you hear in every film or radio broadcast from the 20’s. Argyle socks - Invented in 1914 and became popular in the US by 1916. Although the tartan pattern (which Argyle is based on) has existed since the 1500’s, it was culturally exclusive to Scotland and would not have been seen anywhere else. Vocabulary - Sinclair uses words and phrases such as “jazzed” and “what’s eating you?” that would have made no sense in 1899, but were common in the 1920’s. Skyscrapers - When put together, the rock carvings depict Sinclair traveling through various eras of time. One section depicts accurate representations of the Chrysler and Empire State buildings, which would have been impossible in 1899. Atoms - The same section also contains an accurate depiction of an atom. Although atoms were theorized to exist for hundreds of years, the carving depicts the Schrödinger Model of the atom, which wasn’t proposed until 1925 and confirmed by imaging in 1955. Zeppelins - Finally, the section also depicts a zeppelin over New York. Although the original patents were filed in 1895, the first zeppelin was not constructed until 1900 and were not commercially used until 1910. TL;DR: Even when Rockstar is being intentionally inaccurate, they’re still accurate
The belt loops aren't anachronistic. It's the rest of his outfit that is. Belt loops to hold up pants date back to the 1850's we have photographic evidence of this
He was one of the best Strangers Arthur had the pleasure of meeting. He didn't demand Arthur to do anything crazy or stupid, didn't berate him or put him in uncomfortable situations. Hamish asked for some reasonable help and then invited Arthur for hunting and fishing. He was genuinely a friend to Arthur when Arthur's other friends were falling apart and turning against him.
One of the coolest side mission details I noticed when playing is when you’re piloting the toy boat in Saint Denis with Marko Dragic and the investors, one of the investors says “Think of those poor boys on the H.L. Huntley… 8 lost their lives compared to a mere 5 on the Housatonic” which is referring to the real-life first submarine kill in combat during the Civil War when the Confederate CSS Hunley sunk the Union USS Housatonic off the coast of South Carolina in February 1864. It’s small details like that even in a throwaway line that really make this game an immersive masterpiece!
Glad to see the return of the most insightful and creative piece of RDR content on this platform. Now covering the side missons, where Rockstar notably put more direct translationa of real 19th century history and figures into their fictional rendition of the frontier.
Indeed. It's interesting to see in their previous games how they crafted the lore and names of places like Liberty City. But the research they put into RDR2's story, side missions, and world is on another level imo. It's fascinating.
@@themadtitan7603 The names are great, but the names of neighbourhoods they had for GTA 4 and GTA 5 are amazing, like naming Willmington Banning in GTA 5 was a genius move.
@gabrielmartines3510 Or the Lincoln/Booth tunnel name switcheroo in GTA IV imo. Also, may you elaborate on calling Willmington Banning in GTA V, I don't get that one.
Just for another interesting little detail (or, well, interesting to me anyway), if you kill 25 Carolina Parakeets, they stop spawning completely- while it would still be a while before the species would be completely gone (last confirmed sighting in the wild was in 1910, last captive animal died in 1918, and it took until the 30s before it was formally declared extinct), the game is set around the time they were getting close to extinction.
in middle school i did a report on the life of Ulysses S Grant, and for some reason it stuck with me forever, so everytime i hear him mentioned or referenced it tingles my brain. The video was great.
Being named Jeremy and catching enormous legendary fish is absolutely a homage to Wade’s River Monsters. Absolutely love that show and that R* also do.
One of my favourite little details is if you finish all parts of Arcadia For Amateurs, Albert Mason's pictures are hanging in the gallery where Charles Chaturney's exhibition is on
My favorite UA-cam series back with another installment!! My favorite side mission is with Hamish, really tugs at the heart strings late in the game. I also think the serial killer mission is really interesting how it plays out.
I sometimes had more fun playing the sidequests in the game than the actual main story itself. It's interesting to see the type of people you will meet and see in game
Stellar work on the red dead series, this series is what drew me in to your channel and helped me discover your content on writing and media which are some of my favorites on youtube. Keep killing it! 😊
This is amazing. I discovered this series two days ago and grounded through them. Was very sad when I finished the last one yesterday. Now I come back to see another one! Great content, keep it up!
I love these videos. My favourite Stranger Missions are The Ties That Bind Us because I really like the interactions between Mr White and Mr Black and Arcadia For Amateurs because Albert Mason is such a wholesome and kind guy and he has a great sense of friendship with Arthur who needs it desperately because of the events of the main story.
Seriously underrated content man!! This is the most entertaining red dead content on all of UA-cam! You work hard on these, everyone can tell, although maybe you aren’t as popular as you’d like, fame will surely find its way to you considering how much mind blowing amounts of research and editing you put in these videos, just keep producing them and let your passion for them lead you, and you will get the things you want my friend!
These are the best red dead videos on UA-cam, you really take your time and research and it shows. I like to play the game as closely as I can to how life would’ve been back in the 1890s, and these videos help me get better insight for that. Thanks
My father used to run a tackle shop. He had several stuffed fish on the wall, most dated from the late 19th and pre-WW1 20th century. One was an Irish Pike which according to the plaque was caught in the 1890s, weighed just shy of 70lbs and was about 1.5m long. Pike caught in the 19th century from Loch Derg in Ireland were confirmed to be as big as 95lbs, Jeremy Wade even tried to find his own giant Pike, as it turns out, Loch Derg and some Swedish lakes have been confirmed to have unique subspecies of the Northern Pike, genetically different.
These are by far, some if my favorite videos to watch! Sometimes its hard for me to be in the mood for certain content, but this series always has my attention! Thank you!
First time watching your channel, and thoroughly enjoyed this. I'm especially impressed by the editing in your end credits sequence, the beat matching in it is exquisite.
Incredible video! Maybe you can make a random encounter version? I am dying to hear about the historical accuracy of the scientist you can meet in Annesburg that talks about global warming.
21:30 that book may be referring to how Jeremy Gill has a fixation on stuffing fish and therefore his fishing being art, the book being more about art but having fish on the cover
Something I noticed about Hamish is I’m pretty sure he keeps both reins on the left side of the horse’s neck, the opposite side of his artificial leg. If I saw that correctly, this is actually something a rider missing a limb might do (in the days before more advanced prosectics) to compensate for the reduced pressure on the amputated side and reduced ability to lean into turns
04:40 “smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd” is an often used term when romantically describing the acting / circus profession. The Musical reversed it.

loved this !! an idea you could maybe try is looking at the historical accuracy of Mafia: Dinfinative edition or the Mafia series as a whole, just a thought and idea.
I have a theory about what the explorer might have meant by "liberate South America" though it is certainly imperfect. He may mean the Second French-Mexican war. At the start of the 1860s, coming right off of the War of the Reform (a civil war) France invaded Mexico and set up the Second Mexican Empire. What's strange is the side with foreign volunteers was the French. France had Egyptian, Belgian, Austrian Empire, Polish, and important for this guy Spanish volunteer legions. Though American troops did fight towards the end for the Republic so a volunteer for that side is not impossible. The other option, and what the writers probably meant is that he is implying he was part of one of Garibaldi's volunteer legions in South America, likely the Redshirts in the Uruguayan Civil War. The Colorados, who the volunteers fought for, portrayed themselves as liberators. Could also be the ragamuffin War, but that ended with less of a win for the liberators
Thank you for all the videos in this series, as I generally just watch the playlist and enjoy the calm wonderful simpler times in the video game. It sucks that RDO isn't as flushed out as the base game

Thanks so much for watching! I was only able to cover a few side missions in this video, but which is your favourite?
Thank you for the crazy good content! 100k before the end of the year?
