i was a roadie for tears for fears back in 85 when this came out - their record label didnt want them to play this beautiful song so sometimes they'd play it during soundcheck. at the actual shows theyd some shit ass lyrics about wanting to rule the world
That’s awesome, my dad was an audio engineer at Southern Stars Amphitheater in Houston, TX and said he got to set up for them in 85. Not sure if you ever met any of the crew at the shows, but he’s the one who kinda looked like he was slumped over all the time (back problems from the war). He loved the part when they sang “There’s a room where the gang will find her, holding hands while I’m straight doin your mom”
"Every town and every city, Envies me 'cause she's so pretty..." For real this wouldn't feel out of place in a nice little ballad. Completely separated from the rest of the lyrics, I mean.
For real: I think it speaks to how incredible the original song was that, even with the funny immature lyrics, it still manages to sound beautiful and emotional.
Sound is a note, no different than any other note played or plucked etc. As long as you phrase it the same and sing the same note, any combination of things will sound exactly the same regardless of the words.
When my father ,who grew up in East Germany, crossed the border for the first time in late 1989 , this was the first song he heard being played on a radio. He said that it made him realise just how tiny we seem to the whims of governments and corporations. Truly thought provoking.
I remember hearing this for the first time in a London flourist's shop in the early 80s. I was searching for a bouquet for my then fiancé when I heard it on the overhead speaker. I never heard something that spoke to me on this level. Now whenever my wife and I look at our photos from that trip I think about this song.
My grandfather just passed away last week. This was his favourite song. We used to dance around in the kitchen together to it. Miss you pops hoping you're dancing around up there miss you every day 💖
When I was growing up, I would delude myself into thinking, "No, not everyone wants to do my mom." But I was wrong. Everyone, in fact, wanted to do my mom. This song is record of that realization. Thank you.
I remember listening to this song for the first time, about 35 years ago... It came in the radio, and I instantly was in love with it. The lyrics are so beautiful and touching, easily in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Time sure flies.
this was my grandfather's favorite song. he used to sing it to my mom every time she got up in the morning when she was a kid. haven't thought about this song in maybe 30 years. thank you so much for bringing me back, much love to you
He’s no good at actual voice impressions though which made them funny in the first place. Like the ink spots doing your mom was leaps and bounds funnier because it actually sounded like a 30’s-40’s singer
2070: So, what kind of music did you listen to back in the day, Grandpa? Grandpa: Looks towards the sunset with a glimmer in his eyes, "Good music, Billy. Here, listen." Thomas: 😧
I can't hold back. I remembered my then girlfriend broke up with me. The only one to cheer me up was her mom as we danced to this song. Five kids later and ex dying under mysterious circumstances, her mom and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary! Best wishes, Christopher III
I love how these parodies all contain a still photograph with the steady close-up. It reminds me of a Ken Burns documentary. A Ken Burns documentary about doing your mom.
Honestly, since I did LSD and ran into this guys videos. I feel like I got such a special connection to these classic send-off videos. They just help me put things into perspective like, don't take things so seriously you know?

I am a 38 year old woman that now has a playlist of Doin' Your Mom songs. Thanks to you, I have a dream of finding a way to hack the grocery store music to play the playlist instead. I want to sit on a nearby bench and watch the fun begin. This has become my weeklong dream. Why not a lifelong dream? Because it's only been a week since I had this dream, we aren't there yet. Someway, somehow, this must come true. And for all you haters, we will return to your regularly scheduled programming of grocery store muzak after this brief interruption. I think my favorite one so far is the Bee Gees one but these are all pretty good.
