Venice at the time was a massive (And rich) trade hub. People from all over Europe, the Middle East and North Africa were living there, so modern clothes wouldn't stand out as much as you'd think.
Fun fact- the mother in this played Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. The actor playing her son played Draco Malfoy in the original West End and Broadway productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It's an unintentional Harry Potter reunion.
This is where you realize that the Doctor learned from what happened to Rose and Mickey after Rose started traveling with the Doctor. The emotions are high when you're in life and death situations so often. He wants to make sure Amy doesn't neglect/forget Rory the way Rose did Mickey. Considering their wedding date is the key to the crack in the wall, that's a very important relationship to preserve.
She was married to Damian Lewis(Band Of Brothers, Life, and Billions. She was most well-known for playing Draco Malfoy's mother in the Harry Potter movies.
I’ve always quite enjoyed this one. It’s a silly historical romp, but it’s good fun. I’ve always liked the layers that this episode adds to Rory’s character - he’s not intimidated by the Doctor, and has no issue calling him out. The Doctor recognising that Rory does have a point is a nice touch.
I know you have seen ahead but I didn't see you react to what the announcer said at 11:50 when the girl was pushed into the water. "And so in memory of the children lost to the silence, the traitor is delivered to those she betrayed" Please add that to your notebook ;)
I continue to be gleeful at a Doctor Who reaction from you Chris. As always I love that you're picking up what the show is putting down, you're intrigued when you should be, entertained when you should be, and thoughtful when you should be. When Who is firing on all cylinders, the symbiosis of show and viewer is matchless. On a personal note, RORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! I would die for Rory.
I know I commented. Damn Al Gore's Rhythm! Rory, The Nurse, meeting The Doctor his fiancé told him not to worry about. Notice how he just isn't impressed by TARDIS and the other shinanegans? That's why he's such a great Companion. Martha was impressed, Donna tried really hard not to act impressed, and Amy... impressed. But Rory, he just doesn't care, unflappable, not a flapping flap given. Except about Amy. Probably the first Companion that didn't, that's why The Doctor likes him. The Nurse, who bucks The Doctor when he's wrong.
Part of the Tardis "charm" is that the general populace doesn't really notice what the Doctor, Amy and Rory' are wearing - unless they're given some reason to scrutinize them more carefully - and everyone is speaking Renaissance Italian - so modern colloquialism are translated to an era appropriate equivalent.
The Doctor's instinct to go grab Rory is 100% right - but I don't think it had anything to do with Rose and Mickey. Rose and Mickey were obviously not serious about each other as proved by everything that happened, and adult Rose chose to go traveling with the Doctor and to leave Mickey behind. HOWEVER, the Doctor invited Amelia Pond, the little girl with a fairytale name, to travel with him and in many ways he still sees her that way. The fact that she fell in love with Rory and got engaged while he was gone means something to him, and if you combine that with the idea that he knows Amy only kissed him because of adrenaline... well, you get the point. I'm always amused by how annoyed the Doctor is when Rory doesn't ooo and aaah and say, "It's bigger on the inside," when he goes in the TARDIS for the first time. But Rory and Amy grew up together, and I'm sure he heard a lot about the Doctor and the TARDIS and everything else that happened that night, and to Rory's credit, he believed her. Just one of the many signs of how much Rory loves Amy and how he's the one for her - and I mean The One! And yes, they are her boys.
I'm still with you, appreciating this with more mature eyes. I remember this is where I started to question if I wanted to keep watching Who at all. I don't know how many more episodes I watched but I'm interested in the show again and kind of embarrassed that I'd stopped watching it.
Glad you're hanging in! I too am curious as to what your last episode was. I think this is the low point, and most of what remains is pretty strong. A few maybe even among the best of New Who. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Oh, my friend; I encourage you to keep watching along. The best of modern Who is still to come, some of it hits later this season. I think you'll enjoy the ride!
This is definitely one of the better "Monster of the Week"s, but I am a little sad that the episode around it wasn't so entertaining. They did a great job of working with and explaining the vampire lore as science-abiding aliens.

For this episode, I always now imagine my favorite Pixar characters from the 2022 movie: *Turning Red* meet the Doctor, Amy, & Rory and they all have this adventure together! (And spoiler alert ⚠️) ▪︎ One part of this episode I imagine, is when after Mei's friends, Miriam, Priya, and Abby accidentally get separated from Mei, and gets all worried and becomes her giant 8-foot-tall *red panda form* right in front of the Doctor, Amy, and Rory. ▪︎ Ater she exposed her secret to them, the 3 girlfriends are attacked by the vampire women and Miriam, Priya, and Abby run for their lives until they get cornered and are on top of a tall pillar to protect themselves from the vampires and they all call for Mei. Mei suddenly hears their cries for help and she immediately dashes right for them, with Amy, Rory, and the Doctor following her from behind. Mei comes to her friends' rescue just in the nick of time, and she smashes right into them and pounces on top them, pinning them to the ground with her large red panda paws. She fights them all off: snarling, growling, biting, and baring her teeth at them, grabbing them by their necks or dresses and tossing them back and forth, giving them a BIG swipe with her large panda paw! ▪︎ Plus, even imagined Mei in her *red panda form* vs. Roseanna, the main leader of the vampires in her *Saturnyne form* for a one-on-one combat battle duel too! ▪︎ What do you think? Pretty sweet and cool, huh? 😎 Note: I don't know (or assuming) you've never seen/watched *Turning Red (2022)* before, yes?
@@ninjabluefyre3815 Oh and forgot sm too: After Priya and Abby jump off the pillar, Miriam stayed on top and refused to jump off because she didn't want to leave Mei behind. But Mei firmly persisted Mir to go at once. Even says that she'll meet them in their hiding place with the Doctor and his companions. Mir still refused, until Rory ordered her to jump off. And telling her that Mei will be fine and she "heard her." Miriam, feeling pressured, reluctantly agrees. And finally jumps off the pillar and lands into Rory's arms. Rory gently lifts her down and he, Amy, the Doctor, and the girls flee. With Mei still fighting the vampires and almost done finishing them off. What do you think?
This is my least favorite episode for the next seasons 😅 Not just because the drama between Amy and Rory feels weird and the mystery in Venice is not that interesting

Mickey was never Rose's true love though. They were just casually dating.
