This video is so funny because my friends and i still joke about how R.E.M. completely KILLED the vibe of the show with their performance at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. We had just seen Radiohead CRUSH the OK Computer ragers, it was about 100 degrees, the day before had been canceled due to a fan being struck by lightning, and then right in the middle of a party atmosphere trots R.E.M. with the mellowest batch of tunes in their catalog. To say they bombed would be an understatement.
@@derrickmartin8390 In the context of the actual show it was a total disaster, unanimously so among the people in the crowd, almost to the point of jeers and boos. I'm a huge R.E.M. fan and have even met and partied with Michael Stipe. But i was there and I saw what I saw. Obviously the band had the same experience on their end. Their "sound" was not in the slightest degree ready for a near 100,000 general admission crowd on a Sunday afternoon in an oversold stadium. Now, the previous evening secret show at 9:30 Club with Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the other hand . . . .
It was just a decision filled with a bit too much hubris in the context of the event. On the album, those songs are beautiful. But yeah, it was kind of like having a Leonard Cohen cover band play at the MTV Beach House.
This takes me back. Great but uncertain time to be an REM fan. I remember seeing the tour @ Shoreline and being absolutely blown away by how the songs came to life in a live show.

Honestly, "Why Not Smile" probably saved my life.
I loved watching this.
30:40 Thom Yorke living the dream
Saved me buying another overpriced reissue. Thank you.

Epic u were there! I heard "stipey" say opening that set with airportman was one of the weirdest moments in their live show career 😅

weird feelings watching it before 2001 and all what happened later. Seems not real at all

First R.E.M. album I regretted buying. Bill’s absence was definitely apparent.
