This version of the brotherhood feels so much more powerful and superior, both in ideals and firepower, compared to what we have in the current games. It’s a mystery to me how we still haven’t seen anything close to this, not even their armor.
@@nvRangerthey might incorporate them in a future fallout game, if they set it in the midwest or allow travel to and from multiple wasteland areas. Of course they would have to be a little different in technical details
They did. Bethesda stole the entire concept of Midwestern BoS and turned it into Eastern BoS (later evolved into Fallout 4 Boss where they stole the zeppelin concept from Tactics for a good measure). The armor design was (poorly) repurposed as Enclave power armor, which should've been the Advanced Power Armor Enclave used on the West coast, but I guess that one wasn't cool enough to keep canon in Bethesda's Fallouts.
Absolutely! Not just Fallout 3 but it seems BGS in general enjoyed taking bits and pieces from it despite being overshadowed heavily by the first 2 games.
If you haven't played 76 in a long time by the point you made this video and are missing large amounts of context then why did youd want to make it non-canon@@nvRanger
This chapter of the Brotherhood was the true vision of the Brotherhood that Roger Maxson wanted. No isolationism, trading with locals, defending the peace from threats, using technology they found to rebuild the ravaged wastelands.
No? The midwestern brotherhood is basically caesar's legion. They conquer and assimilate and even when they help it's definitely not out of the good of their heart
@@DonnyTheButterlordThe Legion is quite literally just Genghis Khan of Fallout, out there to plunder and murder everyone who doesn't join or otherwise ally themselves with the Legion. Midwestern BoS may let people join for pragmatic reasons, but at the end of the day they bring civilization to the wasteland, even if it's somewhat heavy-handed. As a ghoul, you're still better of joining them than any other faction anywhere else in America and as a super mutant, it's pretty much the only faction that won't shoot you on sight.
I think the issue is they can be retconned if BGS wants to use those areas in game. I think they have expressed that, hence why they are considered partial canon.
@@nvRanger With years passing, they can easily put anything in between. No need to discard the Tactics lore. The change of to Brotherhood of Steel doctrine was reinforced with the rise of Maxxon - who brought the BOS to the extreme. They now are more aligned with the Enclave while still labeled themselves as good guys. In Fallout 4, we can see the worse of them. They pretty much went at war with any human community. Things are gonna be changed with the Fallout Series. In the beginning of the series, the chapter of BOS has evolved into an extremist roman crusader. They take roman names and can easily go on massacre of those who don't share the same view as they do. The exchange between Elder Cleric Quintus and Maximus shows how much the BOS has deviated from its goal. They now are after power and control rather than good cause. Maybe the rise of Maximus would bring back the original BOS.
exactly. they're left in a state of semi-canonicity, where sure, certain events and factions are mentioned, full details is not given and nothing is thoroughly confirmed out of a possibility that BGS might come in to write over it. @@nvRanger
@@haihuynh8337They never needed to do anything. Tactics was decades removed from other games in the franchise (30 years from Fo1, 40 from Fo2 and like 80 from NV) and with the canon ending being the destruction of Calculator, there was no territorial conflict with, say Caesar's Legion, because Midwestern BoS would retreat closer to Chicago as a matter-of-fact. They only ever went that far west to deal with Calculator, and it'd be impossible to maintain supply lines hundreds of kilometers long after Vault 0 became inoperable after Calculator's destruction, since, afaik, there wasn't much in the region otherwise.
They are BASED Brotherhood of Steel chapter, one of the rare good factions that try to do good despite the odds in the wastelands. One of the reasons why I love them is because they don't discriminate and are willing to recruit anyone willing to join them and fight for their cause. The greatest difference between this faction and the rest of the Brotherhood is the willingness to accept non-humans into their ranks. During the war with the Calculator, the Brotherhood's forces consisted of survivors from the expedition, human recruits from tribes and towns, reformed raiders and religious fanatics, ghouls, sapient (hairy) death claws, super mutants, and machine legions from Vault 0. Many recruits were defeated foes pressed into the Brotherhood's service (or in the case of autonomous robots, recovered from the Calculator's repair bays). I still considered them canon.
That's funny. I love BoS from Fallout 1. But in Tactics they are definitely not good guys, they draft young people and demand tribute from local tribes... And relations inside the BoS is like in typical army, if you are initiate you are dirt... Although it s still best depiction , with actual bunkers and army of steel men.
Yea I don’t think any Fallout has ever depicted a completely altruistic and good faction outside maybe the Followers, but they also were a major influence in the development of Caesar… soooooo. That’s Fallout for ya. I also really like the OG Fallout BoS. Metallic Monks playing as you enter Lost Hills
@@nvRanger ye, I missed them in Fallout 2. Btw I never met a legitimate reason why there's only warehouses from Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout. For whom that supplies?
i personally think both this and new vegas are the best ways to represent the brotherhood there are despite being so far appart. That's because they make more inner sense than any depiction by bethesda and even fallout 2's
I did surprisingly enjoy the overall context of this version of the brotherhood. They give an interesting look into what the BoS could be, and how they might actually be able to compete against larger factions in the wastes.
Gotta disagree on the bethesda hatred, which tbh I think has more to do with group think than actual sound logic. Fo4 BoS is probably the purest rendition of what Roger envisioned, and I would argue it's rather thematic that they made his descendant the one to get them back on course. Open recruiting, willing to exert control over territory, aiding citizens through the annihilation of hostile mutants, etc. Definitely the BoS as Maxson originally would've envisioned. A strong military order with the goal of restoring order through military might and regulation of technology. A mix between Lyons brotherhood (which was intentionally different and rebellious to suit Fo3 story) and the isolationist Western BoS which had become so due to conflicts with external forces. While I love the Midwestern BoS, they're barely that. What we see with the midwestern BoS is a entire shift in goals. Whereas all aspects of the BoS in all games mostly remains away from occupying territory to govern, the Midwestern BoS goes straight into imperial conquest. Which I love. But we should acknowledge that it is the most non brotherhood move to make. A more lore friendly version would've been to see some form of assimilation between the BoS and NCR resulting in a reformed heavily militarized government that would've functioned a lot like the Midwestern BoS.
It’s said by Caesar himself that they have defeated, or Atleast engaged, the Brotherhood in Colorado. He talks about interrogating brotherhood members that “didn’t even know the name of their founder”. My guess is, considering new Vegas also stated that the enclave is in Chicago, that the Brotherhood was severely cut down due to attacks on two fronts. The canceled Brotherhood Of Steel 2 was also supposed to have Caesars Legion as an enemy faction, so there is that.
That's what I was thinking too. I don't think NV conflicts with Tactics at all. It's a span of like 100 years between the games. A lot could happen in that time (the whole legion faction forming, for one). The Legion probably just pressured them out of the region. Midwest BOS had a few skirmishes, realized Caesars Legion was massive, then withdrew to deal with whatever other stuff they have going on.
@@dr.lost420 @jakupsundoe6226 If you play tactics its hard to imagine a world where Caesar's Legion is beating them, or any faction for that matter. They have working cars, open recruitment, sentient deathclaws, and so on. That's why I said it sensible for this to be non/partial canon. Not just the timeline, but the things tactics does within that timeline that is then quickly reverted or done away with in subsequent games. I think any version of the MW BoS we see in a future game (if at all) will be wildly different to fit the rest of the series. Not to mention the power they would have if you go with one of the "merging w the calculator" endings.
Fallout Tactics could possibly fit into the lore with Colorado as the events of Tactics take place between 2197 to 2198, while Fallout: New Vegas takes place in 2281, leaving plenty of time for the Midwestern Brotherhood to have pulled out of Colorado (its not really in the Midwest anyway and I figure the Midwestern BoS would have abandoned it to consolidate in the actual Midwest). This would have given the Legion plenty of time to have conquered Colorado in the 2200s.
For sure, ultimately depends on what those involved want to do with the story and lore. I think for the most part tactics holds the least amount of relevance to Bethesda when compared to the other canon Fallout so its significance going forward is questionable. Point being, I would not be surprised if some aspects get retconned.
There's also Caesar's encounter of the brotherhood out east. Caesar mentions that the brotherhood he encountered there, do not know of their own origins and history. This could tie back to the Mid-Western Brotherhood's recruitment of regular wastelanders in their ranks. The brotherhood that Caesar encountered were probably low rank wastlander joeschmoes who were probably not educated on this kind of stuff.
@@nvRangerWell, they sure had no qualms cannibalizing every single part of Tactics for their own games, including themes from the story (even the idea of evil humanoid robots, which didn't appear in Fallout before).
Bethesda has stated that high level events of Fallout Tactics are canon. In New Vegas, Caesar mentions having battled the Midwestern Brotherhood before. He's captured Brotherhood scribes back east that didn't even know the name of the Brotherhood's founder, Roger Maxson. He's taken down Brotherhood bunkers before, and states how difficult it is to do due to the individual power of Brotherhood Paladins. The pieces of T-45 Power Armor that his Centurions don themselves with, came from defeated Brotherhood Paladins. Given this, it's safe to assume that the "Calculator Destroyed" ending for Tactics is canon. Otherwise the Midwestern BoS would be so technologically and militarily superior with control over Vault 0, that they would've annihilated Caesar's Legion at first contact. Vault 0 is referenced in the new Fallout show as well.
I’ve been looking for Fallout/Elder scrolls podcast and lore stories for literally over a decade this is certainly one of the top ones in terms of knowledge and quality! Thank you
They should make a fallout game where its base with the Midwest brother hood of steel make it catchy. U come out of your vault into a destroyed chicago and find your city thrown in disorder and war and choose who to side with.
that's what tactics was.....thought there was no choice, your town elected you to fight..... jeez I hate new fans sometimes, so unwiullling tom play the real thing they change a word to say eww what if they did this...dude it's the same thing with one aspect changed! Yes, YES! I love that Midwestern Brotherhood have the unique PA design because they want to properly equip their entire ranks, and the design itself really show what the brotherhood is.
@@gagebender2849considering that both factions are somewhat large they're most likely fighting a war just as the NCR, Legion and WCBoS are. I really think it’s annoying how some people constantly attack the idea of the Eastern Brotherhood of Steel. The more you look into the lore, you kind of realize that the Eastern chapter are just sort of a natural progression of what the brotherhood would likely become to survive. A nation. Honestly the eastern BoS and Midwestern BoS are very similar by Fallout 4, so I wouldn’t be surprised if as communication between the two chapters increases, they sort of fuse together.
Doubt it the eastern brother hood kill all mutants but Midwest brother hood are a lot more accepting of ghouls and even super mutant even letting them join as long as they aren't trying to kill them, eat them, or dump them in fev and when the brother hood of steel briefly mentioned them in fo3 they seem to see them as a bigger disgrace than the outcast for some reason keep in mind that the east coast brother hood of steel shot ghouls on site even in fo3
The midwest have gouls, muties, and smart deathclaws. This would necessitate their extermination. The Brotherhood is a lot more like the ❤Enclave❤ than they like to believe.
Eastern Brotherhood of Steel is being attacked because Maxson, they are not Lyon's BoS anymore. They will turn into another west coast Enclace, can't you realized?People in the commonwealth, not paying they food, and they are willing to kill these people.😅😅
I disagree especially by 4 look how the eastern brotherhood treats the land they manage, they loot it without providing protection, they loot farms , but also the only reliable power source in the capital. They are more akin to a roaming horde, they don't build anything.
@@537monster cope. It bothers you because you know they’re weakly written. Keep looking into it Eddie Bravo. 1-2 to New Vegas is a natural and sensible progression for the faction, not going across the country and entirely and rapidly changing multiple times. Nothing about that is “natural”.
Watched this cause I couldn't sleep, seems like another video to leave in the background while drifting off but stayed up researching as much about the Midwest BoS after this. You're mad underated and definitely deserve more views.
It occurred to me the other day, the midwestern brotherhood settling in the capital as they continue moving east would have been the perfect basis for fo3’s brotherhood and explain why they are so different, especially in regards to their recruitment strategies
While the Events in Fallout Tactics are not Canon, the Midwestern Brotherhood does exist, in one way or another, their journey from the Western Brotherhood is mentioned in Fallout 3 and 4. In what form they exist, well, I guess Bethesda is keeping them as a joker to pull.
yea i'm curious what they have planned with them but considering they use the BoS every chance they get in every corner of the wasteland I'm doubting it will be very interesting.
The Legion in New Vegas also claim to have fought Brotherhood forces in the east, but Lyon's faction is too far east for them to have been the forces encountered by the Legion. They most likely engaged the Midwestern Brotherhood.
No one gonna mention that @3:37 the brotherhood has multiple Japanese AM6 zeros and a chinook helicopter with a rocket inside of it? Wacky ass concept art fr
Legion leadership says " We fought the brotherhood east of the colorado" so they have but the midwestern brotherhood would of crushed legion if they had the calculators army
Given its only partial canon, I’m not sure what the legion would have encountered. Assuming they aren’t in the same state because the legion is mainly focused on the NCR.
@@nvRanger I know that the Van buren game mentions the Texas Brotherhood as well as Colorado Chapter but thats really it plus that game was canceled so eh Some of the legion shoulder armor are parts or broken T45 armor so they had to encountered something
Guess the TV show got this video a resurrection. For the next fallout game i hope mutants become a people again not just 99% mindless monsters. In fallout 4 they run around blowing up themselves and everyone around them. When they cant reproduce... Is a random wastelander really worth dying like that over? You're strong enough you rip off their head, why blow yourself up? I hope fallout 5 is more of an RPG with different species/races with unique or different views on life in the wasteland
Yea the mutants in BGS fallout games are portrayed poorly. Fallout is occasionally like a twisted fantasy world with the different races of ghouls, mutants, nightkin, humans, robots and the occasional talking deathclaw.
Fallout 5 will be just another mindless action looter shooter with rpg elements and the same over milked aspects that bethesda so dearly loves. Super mutants, ghouls, BoS, vault tec and nuka cola. It'll have major bugs on release and a couple of dlcs that will be forgotten in time. Basically fallout 4 AGAIN.
As a midwesterner, I would very much like to know why I was unaware of power armor with pronghorn antlers and why I don't have at least one at my disposal *RIGHT NOW.* I mean, Chicago is a definitely too far east for pronghorn in our current US, but antlers in general is so midwestern. I love it. And it makes sense that the midwestern BoS would be more cooperative with other factions and civilians than the eastern BoS, since we're generally known for being friendly and community-oriented. But seriously, if they don't have agility/perception customized settings on their pronghorn suits, I would be sorely disappointed. Those things are hard to catch.
As you talk about Tactics moving away from the original ideal from the original, the Far Harbor soundtrack kicks in making it sound that much more saddening. Well done👏👏👏
Tactics is canon, Emil Pagliarulo (the main writer of the series) confirmed it last month on Twitter, including the game in the official timeline of the series.
Ya they kind of a hybrid between ncr and legion they try to unite local towns and settlements who they take a a heavy tax from in return but they often also assilate defeated enemies and up lift tribals will also actually do a good job stamping lawlessness and threats to the people with extreme brutality while not be ineffective corrupt buracrates
I believe that there could be crossover between the MW brotherhood and the legion, but not as large as tactics would imply. I know that the siege of Denver was a big conflict for the legion and would explain their zealous hatred for a reliance on technology. it would also explain their hubris when it comes to taking on the NCR. I think if the were able to throw out MW brotherhood then they would feel the NCR wasn't a huge step up in terms of of waging war.
Its interesting to see how alot of the ideas in Tactics have been ported over to the east coast games, such as the Brotherhood becoming more open to outsiders in Fallout 3, The Prydwyn in Fallout 4, The Fallout 3 design of the Enclave armor in heavily resembling design of The Midwestern Power Armor Etc.
A few corrections. This game takes place between Fallouts 1 and 2… but due to the two mountain ranges between Chicago and The Boneyard, the lack of knowledge of the events of Tactics in Fallout 2 makes sense. These two games might as well take place on different worlds. Also, depending on if The Warrior has Good/Neutral/Bad Karma, if they convince the brain of their old commander to stand down, decide to shoot The Calculator, or let the timer at the end of the game run out… that’s a total of six endings. And we can infer from all other games that the “guns blazing” ending is the canonical one
I think after suffering so many losses it would be reasonable for them to retreat from Colorado so they don’t become overextended. However there would need to be an explanation for this that Obsidian didn’t provide so unless Bethesda wanted to meddle in New Vegas to make tactics canon or cram the explanation into one of there own games where it doesn’t really belong this current policy makes the most sense
Legion would have never win against Midwest Brotherhood. Since Midwest Brotherhood is strong both in technology and numbers. Their society is meritocratic. Midwest BoS has deathclaws who would crush Ceasar's close combat units.
they exiled the midwest brotherhood because they had too much swag. They are the full realization of Roger Maxson's dream; a brotherhood of honor bound knights defending the weak from those who would pervert technology to harm and conquer them, and rebuilding the ravaged wastes with that same technology, now used for peace in the right hands.
Need a return to Chicago. I'd like to see the Children of Atom play a major role, having infiltrated and overtaken the BoS, causing half of it to transition into the Brotherhood of Atom and half to go into exile outside of the city. Player can side with either or neither, and can betray both.
@@nvRanger I just keep thinking of the visuals in the Nucleus in Far Harbour and how good that would look coupled with the BoS. All the candles and skulls, whispered prayers, the shrines, banners, etc. They're already zealous and dogmatic.
O I loved this game I love the concept of assimilating defeated enemies not so mutch the liegian way of making them execute like you but take what made them different and adding them to your howl
According to the wiki the Legion only has a part of Colorado and the Tactics game takes place in like 2190. The Legion did fight the BOS so it's possible they fought the Midwest BOS.
Almost certainly so. They encountered BoS in the east, and the Legion's borders end far from the East Coast. The ignorance of the Scribes about their founder also adds up - the very introduction FO Tactics doesn't mention Maxson or Mariposa, instead stating the BoS was formed from Vault Dwellers.
IMO tactics is the best looking 2D fallout. It had a pretty solid game editor too but afaik no fan made content went very far, certainly none of the stuff I tried to make did lol. I wanted to make a more story based game but bounced off how much work game development takes.
the bare bones dialogue system is truly what prevented most of the community to do more with it, The Semi-successful one albeit really buggy is Fallout:Enclave and the French-Canadian state funded art project mod The Sum
Makes sense. All games take place as a survivors perspective of all factions while Tactics takes place from the perspective of only the brotherhoods view.
Caesar controlling Colorado always made the premise of the Battles of Hoover Dam sort of pointless. You'd think a guy cosplaying as a Roman would appreciate the use of tactics in siege warfare & water access. All he needed to do was divert or block enough tributaries of the Colorado River so as to drop the water level below the intake for Hoover Dam. At that point it is "Lights out, New Vegas". He could then await any reprisals from Mr. House or the NCR on the high ground in his own territory.
That’s an interesting point but doesn’t the Colorado have sources from outside of Colorado like through Utah for example? Idk the geography of the area perfectly by any stretch.
@@nvRanger Yes, there are countless tributaries. Enough of them are in Colorado to make an enormous difference. Even today, California & Nevada depend on water rights negotiations from the 19th century to supply what they need. Please don't take that comment as me hating New Vegas. Quite the opposite. I've sunk enough hours into it that it was something I thought about even when I wasn't sitting in front of a screen.
@@Mr._Anderpson NO I didn't take it as New Vegas hate, their is plenty to critique about the game and I appreciate the insight. Your comment actually had me scrolling around on google maps. I have heard recently that California also heavily depends on Lake Mead, so the whole water situation in the region is fascinating and frightening. I love that it is relevant to the games, despite oversights.
@@nvRanger It is interesting to look at the moisture record as indicated in tree rings. Some of the ancient trees in California show that the 20th century was the wettest on record for the mountain west & southwest in the past 2,000 years. An enormous amount of development & population growth occurred in the area. The wet 20th century was an anomaly & people are going to begin to realize this a bit too late. Expect renegotiations of water rights in the area.
That would be great if that was their reasoning as to why the west coast BoS grew so much. Unfortunately I doubt the reasoning will be that well thought out
The Brotherhood in the show are West Coast Brotherhood which are reinforced by the Commonwealth Brotherhood. They specifically mention that the Enclave defector is so important that the Commonwealth Brotherhood has shown up.
Back in the 12th of April Emil Pagliarulo tweeted including tactics in the timeline so its safe to assume it happened (Or the writing team is eorking around that assumption) but i think if we do learn anything its gonna get the vegas treatment where story progression will have the faction be killed off or only a remenament in name remain like a hidden valley situation.
If they do that to every faction in the show I am going to be annoyed. Remnant Legion, boomers, Khans (already kinda are remnants by New Vegas) and so on. Honestly, Emil talking about Fallout annoys me as is. Let him screw up TES and Starfield
I honestly would love a major side quest, one of the future fallout titles to have a sort of east versus West brotherhood of steel ideological war. I think that fallout three especially was a missed opportunity with the brotherhood outcast and the lions brotherhood of steel. I think it’d be really cool for a future game to have one of the Big side quest would allow you to either join the side of the western brotherhood ideals, or the side of the eastern brotherhood ideals, and your actions dictate the future of the brotherhood moving forward.
Thats a great idea, BoS civil war with different variants of Power Armor going at it. Show could definitely tap into something like that given the factions history.
Fallout Tactics takes place quite a while before Fallout NV. Fallout Tactics starts in 2197. Fallout NV starts in 2281. Caesars Legion wasn't formed until 2247. That's enough time for the Midwest brotherhood to have done all the events described. Pretty sure skirmishes with the BOS out west are mentioned in NV by the Legion, maybe the Centurion at Cottonwood Cove, not sure. Could be that the Legion contested the overlapping territory and the Midwest BOS just pulled back, due to other pressures or just realizing the scale of Caesars Legion was more than they could handle. As similar as the Midwest BOS are to a proper faction, I don't think they'd stack up very well against the Legion. The Midwest BOS is more feudal than a centralized autocracy, like Caesars legion. They raise, "equip", and "train" levies from protectorate tribes. Fine against raiders or the odd vault computer eradication, but they won't stand up against a major faction to the scale of the Legion or NCR.
Honestly, the head canon I have is this brotherhood chapter is in Canada. I know it’s probably wrong, since I haven’t played the game, but think about it like this: After the Calculator they decided to better restrict knowledge of their location. Part of that could be giving contradictory or incorrect info on location. They were lost in a storm while flying airships. Add in Vault-Tecs wide reach and maybe Vault 0 could be a hidden vault to house a army for emergencies. Would be interesting imo that they’re in the fallout world like that, since it would cause future plot hooks for games. How many Calculators are there hidden? And if the midwestern brotherhood doesn’t exist, could the Calculator still exist? What happens when the midwestern brotherhood is discovered by other brotherhood? Could make a Tactical game where your a third party dealing with that crap. Or running from something in a attempt to find this rumored location.
So there is thematic overlap between Paladin Latham from tactics and Paladin Ashur from the Pitt expansion for 3. This strikes me as a situation similar to to the post Disney Legends continuity for StarWars where it's not cannon, but it's not not canon, and while it's left in that sort of limbo state later authors can go back and mine and then tweak the bits that they like and that fit in well with the evolving narrative.
12:00 colorado springs doesn't contradict NV 1. Caesar says he mets them and says the ones he mets are pretty much raiders. 2. it just means the player blowing up vault zero is the cannon ending. also implys BOS either abandoned colorado before New Vegas or was pushed out by Caesar, the push overs Caesar met were just left over abandoned trash volenteers and reminant affiliates. later lyons say he lost contact with mid west so they may have fell apart or disappeared. I mean look what TODD just did to the NCR on the TV show lastly tactics was suppose to be different intentionally and every single change was specifically by request of fans in 98-2000. tactics wasnt suppose to be another 'chosen savoir' just a lowly grunt joining an army, it was made to play like the original XCOM & Final Fantasy Tactics with squad combat and vehicles which is what fans in 98 asked for after players got the highwayman car in FO II.. not the XCOM game u youngsters know the originals... this game was 2001. Fallout Tactics had great reviews it was well received at the time. the biggest problem the game had back then was system operation problems it crashed computers really bad. but the players loved the game until the IP was sold and the new FPS fans arrived.
I wonder if the Warrior is still considered canon or not. I guess with Bethesda "major events" are whatever they choose. Also I LOVE the transition to Metalic Monks in your intro.
They should just pick and choose all the good parts and make it all cannon lol 😂 it’s a really cool representation of the Brotherhood. I recently downloaded Titans of the New west for new Vegas and there is a midwestern bortherhood armor mod. Very cool looking. Good video! Thanks for sharing!
3:39 I want to know how a A6M Zero float plane survived WWII, the apocalypse, over a century with preservation, and still somehow managed to be fixed enough to fly
I think you know much more about planes. I’m terrified to get in one as is. But I should note, I’m not sure they planned to land, a storm forced them to. Crash might be more accurate.
Not to mention the proper term for Midwest is Minnesota, WI, IL, MI, IN, iowa, Ohio, Since it's surrounded by the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, and other bodies of water left over from the Ice Age, it's an area that's been important trade hub since pre-history. So lots of water they can land planes into.
@@danielpalama3700 yeah people seem to forget the huge amount of fresh water bodies in the region. Lake Superior and Michigan are fresh water, inland seas, and there are tens of thousands of smaller inland lakes to choose from
This kind of brotherhood is how i think all BoS should be, their original main goal is to "preserve/secure and retrieve an lost tech to prevent it from ppl to use it in the wrong way" but most of them just become a thing that they always hated, corrupted/racism/ view other as lesser being that get in their way, the abuse of power, they use a power in the name of brotherhood just to gain their personal interest like, obsess with tech/army/war machine etc. i think this is what a "real brotherhood" should be, regardless of different race, all can join the brotherhood, ghoul, Mutant, raider, or anything sapient creature that willing to do, all united together to achieve one goal.
I might be wrong (probably am) but I think somewhere in fallout NV it is heavily implied that the legion is fighting some kind of a midwestern chapter of the brotherhood or maybe it’s the capital wasteland chapter that expanded idk
@@nvRanger I think even though Bethesda made tactics non-canon they kept some parts to the story like there’s definitely a midwestern brotherhood which is mentioned in fo3 but they are declared as “gone rouge”
this is a half-baked comment spurred by a tierd mind and a lack of food but... hear me out. Maby... just maby the legion is a faction of the brotherhood made up of the lower ranks that broke off in "civil war" of sorts? The desprate tribe that is mentioned by Cesar that he led into becoming the legion wasent so much as a tribe but a bunch of lower brotherhood members that broke off, because the similarities between the legion and the mid west brother hood is... odd to day the least and the jump from midieval toaster humpers that absorbed tribes and entire factions of people to a faction of over educated Roman cosplayers that do a "little bit" of slavery doesn't seem to me atleas, too big of a jump, and cesar mentioning them fighting the brotherhood may be a reference of the war of separation or maybe tying up some loose ends. I dunno, im just saying they have a lot of Similarities and they are from the same area.
Not a bad take to suggest that some of them could be compromised of a group of people from a failed faction looking for a cause. Especially given the BoS and NCRs bloody history. We only know so much about the legion, though it would be a real 180 for BoS members who essentially worshipped technology to now reject it entirely. Also, hope you get some food and sleep my man. Stay healthy.
yeah.... i really wish todd didnt declare tactics as non canon. hopefully the midwest is in fallout 5. I have some hopes because it was mentioned in the tv series twice
The biggest thing for me is, I want their power armor. I want a brotherhood faction that finally stops mindlessly hoarding their tech. I don't need every facet to be cannonized. bringing in intelligent Deathclaws is a bit beyond the pale, but intelligent super mutants and willing, non-feral ghouls should be welcome into the brotherhood, if only as a means to study and perhaps utilize their unique mutations. the only real story faction any of the 3d characters can join that accepts ghouls, let alone intelligent super mutants, is the Minutemen of F4. none of the railroad are, definitely not brotherhood, institute, ncr (what with the guy who wont go back after becoming a ghoul for one reason or another) or enclave, and I don't recall there being any in the legion (at least in game, been awhile though so not 100%). I can't say anything about the isometric games, I haven't played any of them personally and only know vague pieces in passing. The Idea that no primary faction, outside the original enclave with, I think Horrigan was the name, and technically the master, whose whole faction was the dumb super mutants basically, had any inclination to utilize these groups is getting unreasonable
Great lore video! As someone who watched this on a phone at night, the white backdrop behind the images made it extremely hard to watch. Do consider changing it!!!

It seems like the show is going to touch on Vault zero and it definitely fits the prewar story they’re covering. Maybe we will get tactics confirmation in that way.

Definitely one of the more detailed comprehensive accounts of midwest BoS. Some other lore videos next to this one look pretty scrappy, not altogether clear as this one anyway. I thought the power armour on the thumbnail was pure concept art, apparently not?? Where , how did they get power armour like that? Did they repurpose, modify the old pre war p.a . Had some super talented, creative Brotherhood blacksmith/armourer fashion that style of power armour to set themselves apart in aesthetic, for aesthetic and part ideological reasons? Also the renewed midwest Brotherhood went back to their old prejudices against supermutants, ghouls and any other mutations after the calculator and its army was knocked out for good yes?
Sorry I missed this comment, appreciate your kind words. Here’s an official reasoning: “Why does the Power armor look so different from previous models? - Different group of BOS, different technology.” I think they just wanted art for power armor on the cover that was different like Fallout 1 & 2 had. Does t seem to be a thorough explanation unfortunately.
@@colddaze6680 I'm sure if we see it again with cannon implementation in a game they will call it prototype or explain that the MW BoS developed their own power armor based on the X0-1.
I'd never really considered how much of monumental task it was for the NCR, poorly trained and underequipped, to assault Helios One and actually win until I saw the artwork at 04:50. Guys are fighting uphill against barricaded opponents wielding power armour and laser weaponry. That I'm posting this on 6th of June is also rather poignant. Huge similarly there
Yeah, Midwest BoS isn't canonic only because of Caesar's legion. Also I don't think that Chikago's BoS is awesome and should be idealized or marked as "good" BoS like vanilla F3 BoS. FT BoS is a group of BoS that have a mission (reach and obtain Vault-0 tech) and all their efforts are focused on that. Reasons: - Discrimination status. Of course they accept ghouls/int-deathclaws/super mutants into their ranks, but mostly in terms of their usefulness and the fact that the calculator intended to wipe all life forms. But all of BoS members don't like to take "bad" blood into their ranks - this attitude towards them may changed ONLY if you complete the game as a good guy (positive karma that can easy go to minus if you kill too much with your main character during the game) and as one of the generals (or as calculator) convince the rest of the BoS that non-humans aren't bad. - Main goal is the most important thing, and Midwest BoS use everything to reach it, including slavery (captured raiders transfer warhead from Kansas City to one of the BoS bunkers, of course they got lethal amount of radiation). Cruel post-apocalyptic world - there is some labor camps for captured raiders and reavers. - This is not a vanilla Bethesda's BoS that says: "Wanna join us? Go ahead, here is your PA and laser rifle!". This is a military faction and you should work crazy hard to prove that you deserve to wear PA. And if you betray BoS, you will be punished like those dudes in Cold Water.
Your bringing up the factions in Kansas and Colorado and putting the legion in the mix. You gotta remember what years the tactics game and the new Vegas game takes place. Tactics is from 2198 and Vegas was 2281. In other words neither one of them would have met with the events of tatics.
That is fair to point out, but I don't know that that is necessarily true. I understand the years will not overlap but what about what occurs after Tactics. Imagine a Fallout that refers to the remnants of Las Vegas in 20 years but refers to entirely different factions and scenarios, yet we still considered New Vegas cannon. It would be confusing, and muddled. You'd have to fill in the gap. I think you either have to describe how Colorado went from Midwest BoS hands, to Legion hands, or just remove most of the cannon of tactics. In this situation, what happens to the Midwest BoS, they get taken out by the Legion despite having an enormous network in the region, open trade, and an army. They're broken down by the end of Tactics, but they allude to "the Warrior" rebuilding them. Is the Legion fighting an ongoing war with them and the NCR? That would be insane. I agree with you that they could co-exist, but I think the writers of these Dev teams looked at Tactics and thought it did too much and too little at the same time. Added a lot to the series with a purpose or strong backbone.
@@nvRanger ohhh I see what you mean BUT didn't you say they lost some territory too? Maybe all that the legion has is territory the BOS lost? There has to be some way to be able to put the tactics games into the the main cannon.

I definitely think they should do a spinoff game in Chicago around the time of the current games where we can get a revision canonical story for tactics as I think it does add to the franchise in many positive ways. You can just remove small things such as the BoS controlling Colorado
I wish the mid west brotherhood would get some more representation instead of just being the forgotten black sheep that they are. Praise to fallout tactics getting some light shed on it and heres hoping we eventually get another game around them!

how does the timeline look for tactics and NV? Cause it is possible that Tactics did happen before the rise of legion provided the brotherhood post Calculator war retreated back to chicago after looting the Vault.
You got the backstory wrong. This is post-Fallout 1 Brotherhood effectively exiling the rogue element from their faction by telling them to go on goose chase after one group of remnants of the Master's super mutant army. Sometime after that BoS decided, after all, to become independent contractors for NCR to reintroduce technilogy into the wasteland if at a leisure rate and grew in power though stagnanted as an organization. When Enclave surfaced they were outgunned and out-tech'd, so once the Chosen One blew up the oil rig, they decided to covertly expand into the East, which became the Fo3 BoS. Meanwhile the original BoS ended up in conflict with the evergrowing NCR and basically got wiped after Helios One. I don't agree with the game being "egregious" or "limiting options (for future writers)" though. Fallout 3 eludes that the canonical ending of Tactics is the one where Calculator gets destroyed, which as stated by that ending of Tactics heavily limits their reach and strength. The last bunker (Delta, was it?) was quite literally a makeshift camp for staging operations in the Calculator's territory. Also the timeline, which goes back to you getting the backstory wrong. Tactics takes place soon after Fallout 1 (Fo1 ends in 2162 and Tactics takes place in 2197) over the course of a few years, which removes it from the next Fallout game (FO2 in this case) by about 40 years (which begins in 2241). This further makes a conflict with The Legion a complete non-issue, because Caesar isn't born until 2226. Plus the ending also states Midwestern BoS puts their mission of reuniting with Western BoS on hold indefinitely. And as a more recent news, the Fallout show puts Tactics back on the canon timeline though without specifics.
i think what they should do is bump up the timeline and make it so that they were in the guerrilla warfare with the calculator when caesar attacked thats why they were driven out and with the newer game engines they could make a map realistically that big
and use the creativity of newer writers to change up the lore a bit to make it a bit more canonically accurate cuz the little bit of lore we do get from it is soo interesting as these people were of different ideologies that's why they were sent out

@@nvRangerthey might incorporate them in a future fallout game, if they set it in the midwest or allow travel to and from multiple wasteland areas. Of course they would have to be a little different in technical details
Isn't Fallout 4 BoS repeats after them? Zeppelins and image and taking recruits, and expansionism.
The Enclave has similar armor in Fallout 3.
Honestly fallout tactics is really underrated and I was surprised how much Fallout 3 was inspired by tactics. Its one of my favourite fallouts

The chicago/midwest brotherhood is canon, there isn't much discussion about it, they are referenced in later games.

@@nvRanger The lore even managed to swipe Shady Sands off the map in a very tight timeline.
@@Orianna_Bumssen321he claims they were scribes

It occurred to me the other day, the midwestern brotherhood settling in the capital as they continue moving east would have been the perfect basis for fo3’s brotherhood and explain why they are so different, especially in regards to their recruitment strategies
I wish Bethesda put that much forethought into the explanation of their games because that’s honestly a good idea.

I mean, Chicago is a definitely too far east for pronghorn in our current US, but antlers in general is so midwestern. I love it. And it makes sense that the midwestern BoS would be more cooperative with other factions and civilians than the eastern BoS, since we're generally known for being friendly and community-oriented.

Tactics is canon, Emil Pagliarulo (the main writer of the series) confirmed it last month on Twitter, including the game in the official timeline of the series.
Right, a couple others have mentioned. Guess we will see what they decide to pull from tactics
Great point, I had not thought of that. Especially fallout 3 enclave armor.
And we can infer from all other games that the “guns blazing” ending is the canonical one
your forgetting time, bos could of moved out of the region by the time Legion started expanding in that direction.
Yes, Tactics take place 84 years before New Vegas!
This would mean the Legion expended to Illinois which isn't the case as far as we know
I think after suffering so many losses it would be reasonable for them to retreat from Colorado so they don’t become overextended.
Vault 0 was shown in one of the bonus videos on Amazon Prime...mabey tactics will be Canon again
i gotta look into that, I fear that they are not connected but we shall see
Need a return to Chicago. I'd like to see the Children of Atom play a major role, having infiltrated and overtaken the BoS, causing half of it to transition into the Brotherhood of Atom and half to go into exile outside of the city. Player can side with either or neither, and can betray both.
that's an awesome premise for a game, would love to see them return to Chicago w an idea like that around a split off group of the BoS.
@@nvRanger I just keep thinking of the visuals in the Nucleus in Far Harbour and how good that would look coupled with the BoS. All the candles and skulls, whispered prayers, the shrines, banners, etc. They're already zealous and dogmatic.
Dude, I'd love a Fallout game set in the Midwest. Set it around Sioux Falls.
Midwestern brotherhood armor is the best looking and most underrated in the series.
I’m with ya there
IMO tactics is the best looking 2D fallout. It had a pretty solid game editor too but afaik no fan made content went very far, certainly none of the stuff I tried to make did lol. I wanted to make a more story based game but bounced off how much work game development takes.
It does have an amazing visual style. I love the look of the in game areas and concept art
the bare bones dialogue system is truly what prevented most of the community to do more with it, The Semi-successful one albeit really buggy is Fallout:Enclave and the French-Canadian state funded art project mod The Sum
Midwest brotherhood is the best brotherhood! Then again Tactics was my first Fallout game.
Everyones first Fallout will always keep meaning to them. Tactics is super underrated tho, and it gets lumped in with Fallout BoS too often
The crucifixion and the overlap of Colorado makes me feel like the Midwest BOS turned into what if playing as the warrior is ceasers story itself
OK, now you make me want to play FOT again.
I wish they’d remake that game. It’s a bit barebones but would have so much potential if they expanded upon the in game mechanics.
I find them the most logical depiction of the Brotherhood part saviors part tyrant and with still my favorite power armor
Right, the BoS if the NCR didn’t get in their way
I hope the Brtoherhood from the TV Show is the Mid West, at least that would make sense to why they have so many soldiers and airships
That would be great if that was their reasoning as to why the west coast BoS grew so much. Unfortunately I doubt the reasoning will be that well thought out
@@nvRanger yeah same but one can dream that they actually put some thought into the show
The Brotherhood in the show are West Coast Brotherhood which are reinforced by the Commonwealth Brotherhood.

Just the fact that they look like some badass cyber wizard group straight out of an early 90s rpg magazine makes me like them more.
Such a perfect description lol
I think vault 0, ceaser and the Midwest can totally exist in the same area that would make a freaking cool game
I know it’s probably wrong, since I haven’t played the game, but think about it like this:
After the Calculator they decided to better restrict knowledge of their location.
As someone who is from St.louis, having a game take place in this area would be sold like hot cakes
the midwest could certainly use a presence in Fallout
“The Brotherhood is vastly outnumbered”
Amazon: You sure about that?!
Lmao
So there is thematic overlap between Paladin Latham from tactics and Paladin Ashur from the Pitt expansion for 3. This strikes me as a situation similar to to the post Disney Legends continuity for StarWars where it's not cannon, but it's not not canon, and while it's left in that sort of limbo state later authors can go back and mine and then tweak the bits that they like and that fit in well with the evolving narrative.
I think that’s a spot on assessment. Bethesda want the flexibility to pull from it and work around it if need be without committing just yet.
12:00 colorado springs doesn't contradict NV
I mean look what TODD just did to the NCR on the TV show
lastly tactics was suppose to be different intentionally and every single change was specifically by request of fans in 98-2000. tactics wasnt suppose to be another 'chosen savoir' just a lowly grunt joining an army, it was made to play like the original XCOM & Final Fantasy Tactics with squad combat and vehicles which is what fans in 98 asked for after players got the highwayman car in FO II.. not the XCOM game u youngsters know the originals... this game was 2001. Fallout Tactics had great reviews it was well received at the time. the biggest problem the game had back then was system operation problems it crashed computers really bad. but the players loved the game until the IP was sold and the new FPS fans arrived.
The armor looks straight of some old school comics I really love it
it really does, love Fallout concept art
I think the East Coast Brotherhood is alright as a splinter faction.
I think it’s missing a distinct identity and purpose
I wonder if the Warrior is still considered canon or not. I guess with Bethesda "major events" are whatever they choose. Also I LOVE the transition to Metalic Monks in your intro.
Yea we await Emil’s decisions and I suppose the showrunners as well now.
Metallica Monks is probably my favorite fallout track.

The armor these guys wear gives the X-02 armor a run for its money. It looks badass
It has got to be as cool as the BoS has ever looked.

Also where are they planning to land a floatplane in the Midwest?
I think you know much more about planes. I’m terrified to get in one as is. But I should note, I’m not sure they planned to land, a storm forced them to. Crash might be more accurate.
@@theodorekaczynski8147the great lakes

Huh, this dystopian version of Chicago kind of sounds like modern day lol.
Tactics and Vegas are still my two favorites
😅
I might be wrong (probably am) but I think somewhere in fallout NV it is heavily implied that the legion is fighting some kind of a midwestern chapter of the brotherhood or maybe it’s the capital wasteland chapter that expanded idk
No I think you’re right that they had run into the BoS in some form near Colorado.
Now the question is how much does BGS follow Tactics/New Vegas lore
Actually, it's not a bad possibility.
Stay healthy.

thats awesome, glad to have touched base with a more niche audience in Fallout. Appreciate the sub.@@Tinyuvm
yeah.... i really wish todd didnt declare tactics as non canon. hopefully the midwest is in fallout 5.
Absolutely, I stopped using the effect in more recent videos. Appreciate the feedback!
I personally think it should be at least a little bit cannon considering it answers the question of what happened with vault zero, the truth is vault zero exists and is owned by the government in reality, in the story the government sold vault zero to vault tec so this real life Colorado vault is Cannon but without a story without fallout tactics!

Here’s an official reasoning:
“Why does the Power armor look so different from previous models? - Different group of BOS, different technology.”
I think they just wanted art for power armor on the cover that was different like Fallout 1 & 2 had. Does t seem to be a thorough explanation unfortunately.
@@nvRanger Good enough, when there's nothing else to go on?
@@colddaze6680 I'm sure if we see it again with cannon implementation in a game they will call it prototype or explain that the MW BoS developed their own power armor based on the X0-1.

Reasons:
- Discrimination status.

Never even bothered going near that one tbh😅
And as a more recent news, the Fallout show puts Tactics back on the canon timeline though without specifics.
is that chicago art with the john hancock concept art? i know some 70s architecture exists like the DC subway
i think what they should do is bump up the timeline and make it so that they were in the guerrilla warfare with the calculator when caesar attacked thats why they were driven out and with the newer game engines they could make a map realistically that big
and use the creativity of newer writers to change up the lore a bit to make it a bit more canonically accurate cuz the little bit of lore we do get from it is soo interesting as these people were of different ideologies that's why they were sent out
