I live about an hour from this mall. Its a shame what a shell its become over the years... I remember going to this mall in the 90's on the weekend and it could take you 20 minutes just to find a parking space, THATS how far its fallen!
Nice one. I appreciate your honesty. When I visit my local mall (Triangle Town Center, Raleigh NC), I think about you. It has stores, but not too many customers. I think of my young days when the local mall was everything. Back then, the idea of a mall being abandoned and dark and spooky never entered anyone's mind. Malls were full of life that nobody ever thought to question. Now, dead malls are sadly the norm. Very sad indeed.
I lived in Columbia in the 80's and 90s, spending a lot of time at this mall and Dutch Square. It's really sad to see their slow demise.
I was there when it first opened. Spent innumerable hours as a teenager walking those cavernous halls when they were jam packed with shoppers and teenagers and families. How sad to see it now. It's like watching an old friend get sick and die.
Same here. I actually worked in the knife shop on the second floor near center court for a while.
I remember this place as a kid in the early 80’s. Shocking
Vividly remember when Columbia Mall opened. It was THE place to go for many years. Have very fond memories from childhood thru my teen years.
That slowed-down version of Spandau Ballet's "True?" Seriously - *chef's kiss.*
Your rant against Moonbeam is spot on.
I love your videos. The background music is always great. Really gives that feeling of nostalgia. ❤
Also, I've heard of Moonbeam. My question is, how the hell are they still in business??? You're rant was awesome, btw. It had me in tears. 😂
There are a lot of theories out there, among which is that they're intentionally taking on stinker properties they can get for cheap and take a loss on to offset profits in other parts of their portfolio.
@@UniCommProductions I have a Secret about Moonbeam; the Jimmy Haslam and Paul DePodesta of Mall Owners. (Don't tell Moonbeam)
Kristin has the kind of soothing voice that I could listen to all day
I lived in Columbia for two years as a kid. I remember buying pizza here before spending time in the arcade and walking around to get girls phone numbers. We would walk to the Toys R Us across the Parking lot to see the new video games and then walk to the movie theater.
Yaaaassss! Another awesome vid!!! I wish you were down here in Columbia only a few months after your actual visit. I assume you already saw updates, but for viewers that don’t know… two anchors have been demolished internally and are now becoming state, local government and health department offices. I will probably be up that way for an event at USC soon, so I will stop by to see the most up to date changes.
Hello fellow pinball enthusiast. :)
@@tjbeyer9975yaaaaaasss! Let’s flip! 😂😂😂
Glad to see you back again Kirsten and Ron great video as always, hope you are both well 👍🏻😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Wow I love this roll your on tell em like it is! All to the dragging Spandau Ballet's True. Great job as always.
Shattered Dreams too.
So much for their promises.
Fantastic video! down with moonbeam!!!
Thanks bruv. Looking forward to seeing your new video later!

all i ever heard about that place was how many shootings there were all the time, but when i was a baby my family lived super close down at the end of decker blvd.
I worked in that mall from 2006 until 2013 when the company I worked for shut my location down and laid me off. Sorry to disappoint, but in the little over seven years that I worked there, we didn't have one shooting.
I work at the other mall across town, Columbiana Centre, which is considered the "good" mall in a "better" part of town. It's almost full occupancy and busy enough. But in this mall we have had two shootings in the last three years. Several years ago, there was a murder/suicide and we do have our share of shoplifters.
So, sometimes, what you hear isn't always the truth.
Fantastic video as always Kristin!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm very much liking Angry Kristin. 👍
She only comes out when needed but she can be entertaining! 😂
I was here on the weekend. It's a bizarre place, and the people are so friendly. Love to see some redevelopment happen here
You should head down to Charleston and visit Citadel Mall.
I wish I had chosen to go there instead of Sumter Mall which was not particularly interesting. I didn't even shoot any footage there.
Yes Citadel Mall is only hanging on because of Target and MUSC.
@@melbrown6019 And until it gets cancelled "Righteous Gemstones".
I'm caught up on your videos and what a way to end this cruise, an epic about Moonbeam. "Make your own damn sandwich" 🤣🤣🤣
Never stop Kristin. 😉
Well I have great news I should have some new ones out very soon I am headed out on the road this week! And thank you so much for your support and comments
@@UniCommProductions YAY!!!!
I'm still pretty new to the dead mall scene and have been enjoying various channel, especially yours. 😉
I absolutely love your style. A hint of sarcasm thrown in at just the right time. 😁
Great to see another video! As always, an awesome job! 🎉
I really appreciate your basic human decency and how you stand up for the small-guy, mom and pop, family businesses Kristen. You make me feel good when you rant about corporate dragons laying waste to communities that at the beginning, saw them as saviors, and welcomed them in. 🙏
I really enjoy malls full of small businesses, and I've covered a lot of them. There's a feeling of community in them that all the various store owners are in it together to try to make the best of a less-than-ideal setting. I don't like seeing them steamrolled by people who are only there to extract as much profit from them as possible. In fact I do wonder if a future for some nearly-defunct malls is to have them set up as a sort of co-op that everyone shares in the profits and works together to maintain them.
@@UniCommProductions -I like it. Kinda like a farmers market for modern day retail. 😁
@ttocselbag5054 exactly! Especially in areas where it gets cold in the winter. I would put a mall like Eastland in Columbus before it closed into that category; nearly every business inside was locally owned, many by immigrants, and they had places that sold homemade bath products, etc. (and because of that, the mall was full of the most awesome smells!) the best part is that it benefits the consumer too; it makes the mall a place where you truly can get things you cannot get anywhere else.
Oh hey 👋 Kristen I’m so glad your videos are back and I love you 😊❤
Fantastic mall tour with a great soundtrack, Kristin!
What a great video! I've seen a few videos from here and so desperately want to come and film this mall. Thanks for the look and relatable narration. Just subscribed.
Just be discreet; Moonbeam is known for being pretty hostile to video and photos!
Glad to see you back!! It seems like forever since you last posted one! Greetings from Seattle :)
"Life" has been happening to me a lot this year (as it has with a lot of the more prominent people in the Dead Mall world it would seem). I'm really hoping to be able to release content more often. Thank you for watching and sticking with me!
You said it best sweetheart! I hate slumlords who just let beautiful malls with potential rot…
Great malls of yesteryear deserve to have small businesses and community events still, even when their heyday has long passed.
If expectations are adjusted, these have a great future as a place where small businesses can get started and network together.
It was a great mall. I spent a lot of time there.
I grew up going to this mall. My mom worked at Belk. I took a field trip to this mall in elementary school. There used to be a pet store. It was an awesome mall! The gangs and shootings came later as it started to decline.
My daughter lives in Columbia. Haven't been to this mall, but she took me to the Forest Fair Mall of Columbia!
As one politician said, We will fundamentally change America - or something very close to that. Well, here we are!
Corporations have definitely played a part; a lot of mall staples are now owned by hedge funds that get in, suck out all the value and dip before the company tanks.
@@UniCommProductions Yes, the rich get obscenely, wickedly rich - the rest of us go deeper into slavery.
It wasn't corporations that ruined this mall.
I'm picturing a group of zombies performing that cover version of "True".
That's a nice old mall. It's not completely run down yet and reminds me of being a kid shopping with my mother.
I loved this mall when I was a kid..Its very unfortunate the Most Beautiful mall in our state has the most terrible ownership- Im grateful you captured this on video now while its still in decent condition.
love the video, always fun to watch your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
I cannot believe how dead this mall is now. The Mall off of Harbison Blvd In Columbia SC has every space full with a buis in it. The Dutch Square Mall went through a rash of violence and people started avoiding it.
I love how we can all come together with our love of malls and dislike of companies like Moonbeam! Glad I found your channel Kristin, just subscribed!
I couldn’t have said it better myself! Welcome! I just got back from a mall trip so expect new videos soon! 🥰
Really enjoyed, very CBL!
Much appreciated! 🙏🏻
It's so surreal to see what it is now vs what it was when it was opened. it was a MADHOUSE then.
I was in there about a year ago and it was pretty dead. Almost the whole first level of Macys were mattresses. I thought it was a Sears. It looks like it is running about half occupied or less.
I worked there in the late 70's and it was so glamorous with friendly people. It was a hip and upcoming place. Great and thriving businesses abounded. But I wouldn't set foot in there now. Sad.
Love the Unicorn 🦄 and you are one of my favorite channels!
Even 5 years later I still love our unicorn! Thank you!
Happy Halloween!! I do miss the malls...especially my hometown favorite Randall Park Mall......
Your favorite is legendary among dead malls. One of the best known and earliest examples.
I remember this mall from the 90's when I had family that lived near there, so we swing by a few times a year, and it's really just sad to see the state of this mall. 🖕Moonbeam!!
TRUE!
Used to shop here back in the late 70s and early 80s. It used to be THE place to go. Petty crime and out of control teens ruined it.
Nice as always! when i saw some pictures of compagnie internationale express i was wondering where it was at and i found this mall. does look nice. i saw this from Wikipedia saw the owner
and was like 'ughh Moonbeam the company that failed Century iii why i outta'
Good video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO🎉
Your enthusiasm is infectious and I hope everyone catches it! :)
@@UniCommProductions been watching since tri county, keep the s tier content and the hype shall always remain
I miss the days of booming malls. Kristin, you need to revisit Tuttle Crossing Mall in Dublin Ohio...it's still doing okay, but it's much different than last time you visited. It's still my favorite of all the current malls in central Ohio. The mall in Fairborn Ohio is probably my favorite in Ohio though. It's booming, and has the coolest store ever...original 151! IYKYK
Malls back in the day were the hip place to be and hang out at. These huge parking lots used to be packed with cars. Spent countless days hanging out at the mall because this is where everyone was. Now everyone just sits around at home.
@@Novusodand that is still the case with malls in Australia. Booming with many under construction, although not on a grand scale like these.
The mall in Fairborn is really epic. I spent quite a bit of time there back in the early 00's cause I was dating a guy who worked in Dayton.
I believe one of the reasons why some people move to New York City is because there is an emptiness in the suburbs especially with dying malls. Many cities in America have turned into ghost towns too so there can be an appeal to the northeast cities where walkable busy streets are more prevalent
A sandwich would be great right now!
😂
Dan Bell AND Unicomm uploading on the same day? YES PLEASE
I sat down and watched Dan's video IMMEDIATELY. If it weren't for him, none of the rest of us would be doing this!
Dan Bell got me into watching dead mall videos. Then I found Sal and Ace and one day stumbled on one of your early videos and was in love with the style and vibe of your videos. Subscribed to your patreon after 1 episode.
@@UniCommProductions why the hell would you say that ?
@@JoeyTABoy-k9l he was first, and inspired most of the “first wave” of dead mall creators
@@UniCommProductions oh... i know what you mean now i was just confused at first
Yeah 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Thank you as always Kim for your support and enthusiasm!
Shattered dreams. 😔
So much for their promises.
I know this much is true... Moonbeam are deadbeats indeed
Leaaking roof, peeling paint, discolored windows, major cracks and other areas completely closed off this place is going to eventually shut down! Live ten minutes away and haven't been there in about 6 months outside of Macy's there isn't much left!
I live in the Chattanooga area. My problem with CBL is they built Hamilton Place Mall in Chattanooga, which has killed their other 2 malls in the Chattanooga area, Eastgate Mall (now Eastgate Town Center and no longer owned by CBL) and Northgate Mall in Hixson.
That’s a problem across the board with a lot of malls; they built them until there were too many and they began to cannibalize each other (I did a 3-part series about this a couple years ago called Overmalled using my hometown, Cincinnati, as a case study…they had over 20 malls at one point! Pittsburgh had over 30!)
@@UniCommProductions I remember watching that video. Eastgate Town Center is now mostly office and college space. Northgate Mall in Hixson is dying slowly. Since Sears and JC Penney closed there hasn’t been anything to take its place
I went to this mall time. The only business I really saw was people going in and out of a store that had its windows and door completely blacked out. Very sketchy
Awesome mall video as always 😎 it's sad 🥺😭 the mall is got the bad moonbeam claws in it😬😬😱😱 hopefully it survives to be rescued and adopted by some company that will show it TLC and give it a great lease on life again in Raleigh NC we unfortunately have a mall triangle mall owned by the evil KOHAN investment company here in Raleigh NC the mall is on auto pilot now but KOHAN is letting the old outside shops-old food court crumble they promised the city a revival of the mall that won't happen I'm hoping they sell the mall to a investor that will allow the mall to thrive onward 🙏 for the future 🍀😎💯👍
Moonbeam and Money laundry both start with M😂
Gottem!!!
@@UniCommProductions I have a Secret about Moonbeam; the Jimmy Haslam and Paul DePodesta of Mall Owners. (Don't tell Moonbeam)
one mall you didn't list was knoxville center mall in knoxville tn. moonbeam didn't own it outright they were backers to the llc partners that owned the mall, made long lists of things they were going to do and never did but they did raise the rent , never did repairs and the mall lasted about 4 years after it changed to the ownership of the llc partners
That's interesting, I didn't know that! That really makes a lot of sense considering that mall's seemingly fast slide into oblivion.
This video is really great. I'm glad someone put on their video how bad moonbeam really is. They're as horrible as Eddie lampert
I have been here once!! I was always told that it was on the bad side of Columbia. 😬
I drove around the area quite a bit and didn't find it to be "sketchy", a bit run down but you expect that in "inner ring suburbs" because all the buildings are older.
Are you doing anymore in SC?
I did two in SC and one in Georgia on this trip; however there’s plenty more to see down there so a return trip may happen in the future.
You know a mall is on its final legs when the churches move in.
Cheap rent and usually a big open space, not likely to attract troublemakers
rofl oh so this is the place that has those weird "fun" banners!
All of Moonbeam’s malls do; Century III had them too
I don't understand what Moonbeams business strategy is. Surely no real estate investor today is going to buy old malls to operate as a mall. If their ulterior motive is to buy, demolish, and put something else on site, I could understand. But, they don't seem to do that either.
I don’t know what their endgame is but I sure would like to understand.
Wasn't Rolling Acres owned by Moonbeam Capital?
I don’t believe I’ve ever heard that but considering it’s trajectory it’s completely possible
If this mall could swap places with Columbiana I would be happy
Morguebeam
That mall at least for the last 15 years looked pretty sketchy
Luv ur videos but I'm over the shock and surprise that any mall isn't doing well. This business model is so over obviously. IMHO what ur seeing is the milking of income properties for tax reasons. My guess. It's time to move on and 4 someone to reinvent the wheel in retail. It'll happen. We'll look back at this hiccup and shake our heads. Hopes n dreams🎉😅😊😂❤😊
I have plans to branch out into other types of content for that very reason. I’m never “shocked” or “surprised” by them being closed or struggling, there are a zillion reasons why (and if I’ve given that impression it was unintentional.) My intention in making these videos is the knowledge that their demise is potentially inevitable, and for those of us who spent time there in our heyday, it’s for the memories and preserving history. Back during the days of film and VHS tapes no one thought to take many photos or videos, so some of them will disappear completely if not documented.
@UniCommProductions I still watch your Vids bc they're so well done, but I'm not surprised anymore like I was before covid. I'm up here in the Cleveland area and it's the same. Seems to me business wise it's time 2 see the next big idea in retail. Unless we already have. Amazon. Thx 4 ur videos. 😘
