- Knowing where to start when packing for a day hike can be confusing. Here’s a simple list of critical items EVERY hiker should have for a day hike.
Planning a hike takes time and attention to detail but having a basic kit packed and ready to go is a great way to reduce a lot of the guesswork.
Here are the key items that will cover the 10 essentials for just about any day hiking adventure.
This list is meant to be a supportive guide to packing and preparing for an afternoon trip into the backcountry. It is not intended to be a fully comprehensive list. If you're planning an overnight backpacking trip you'll need to add a headlamp, sleep system, and cook system to the list.
Items left out of this list intentionally:
flashlight or headlamp. With everyone carrying a cell phone, we now have flashlights readily available. (yes, I also pack a headlamp but it's not critical)
Cook Set. there are as many options as there are days in a hiking season
Sleep system. Locations, camping style and conditions determine the need
Remember the basics:
Leave No Trace
Do No Harm
Respect nature
Respect wildlife
Have fun

Fantastic work man, this was helpful and so nicely elaborated!
Thanks for the great feedback! It means a lot.
gGeat information I am wondering what 20 L pact you are using in this video thanks
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
For the past few weeks I’ve been trying out the Big Agnes Impassible 20L. It’s proving to be a very comfortable pack on and off the trail. I’m actually traveling through the Philippines for the next couple weeks and I’m using it for my carry-on and around town bag. It’s lightweight and carries well. There are a couple things that I’m not a huge fan of like the lack of hip or chest pockets, but overall it’s been very good

Thanks for the sub!
I appreciate the support 😄
20L such a great size
I completely agree. I’ve really been enjoying the new pack. I do miss my hip pockets but the reduced weight has been great on my back.
Merino wool!. I wear nothing else.
Nothing else 🙈
Sorry, I’m still twelve at heart..
I love my merino socks and base layer.
