  • This talk will explore critical questions about the school experience of most autistic children, and the long term impact of these experiences. The way schools generally deal with autistic children involves many factors: what ideas do most schools bring to understanding autistic children? What are their goals for autistic children? What about children's experiences do schools need to understand, and how can they be more effective?

I thought the clip about pounding a square peg into a round hole was very well put.

This is an excellent presentation and interview! My son and I just listened, and he couldn't agree more with the ways in which many educations--or the "system" seems to miss the mark with autistic individuals. Really, Maria Eckerd, you've highlighted the problems so well. My son, as a nonspeaker, totally agrees with the reality that many are treated like dogs--and success is measured in whether one is compliant--rather than whether one's own goals are met (thinking of the example of the young man who was in a a basic life skills class at school, but was already taking the bus on his own, and succeeding in university courses). Thanks for this!

My son has suffered autism spectrum since childhood and has battled with it all his life. But recently taking Dr Oyalo herbs have helped him get rid of it completely, his speech is vital and his social skill is perfect. I'm so glad and happy now

My daughter's are autistic and traumatized by their elementary school. I have been dealing with school district not understanding what the extent of trauma is. One of my girls was attacked by another special needs child. It took 3 staff members to pull him off. My other daughter was dragged down hall by 2 teachers every morning for a couple of months. They told me that this was in their training with autistic kids because they refuse to cooperate and go to school. I walked away crying watching my daughter scream and cry as they used force. Now school district is forcing them to return to school. I have received notices of chronic absences. They don't understand the extent and think more trauma will help them. Even though they aren't being treated like their elementary school. Now in high school my girls still have anxiety. School psych suggested putting them in a facility. I was so angry with her. I found her cold and callous. She said she could care less. What can I do? As a parent I would rather keep them in homeschool because they feel safer.

Then do that. Everything you’ve just described sounds illegal. Compile evidence of this and threaten a lawsuit if the school tries to force them to continue there. Autistic children don’t just grow out of their autism, they become autistic adults. Getting them into a proper environment where they can thrive, whether this be homeschooling, private schooling, or any other form of schooling is essential for them to grow, and later be able to transition to adult living.

Wonderful presentation ! Am devastated that there are so few views ! How could one get this to be seen by more people ? This should be seen as an urgent goal.
Thank you profoundly for making this available.

Very good contribution, I kept nodding yes yes yes, but only one word of caution please do not be naive about corporates who co-opt neurodiversity abd create autism at work schemes as a means to improve the bottom line and it is exploitative and unethical.

Some are token and some are excellent. Check out Aspiritech, other programs in the Chicago area aim to have 50% ND employees. Big ones like EY and SAP have relatively few but getting good programs going at different locations. Microsoft skims off the cream of the crop.
