total war peaked in 2002. it has been 1 step forward and 2 steps back ever since. simple as.
if youve never played medieval 1 and thinking about it, i made a video for my 2nd channel to show how to get it running well in 2023: ua-cam.com/video/9uR8WmkG1-I/v-deo.html

@@真志雄 That's the absolute minimum we need... Perfomance problems, improved interface, controls, camera, improved resolutions, sprites and textures as bug fixes and expanded modding capabilities are what we do need at the very least...but I'd rather prefer a full remaster HD version of the game as they already done with Rome 1. I think there are decent chances for that to happen especially if Med2 remaster is going to sell well. Finger crossed :)

@@Djnomad912 Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 are the peak of the series. Rome 1 and Medieval 2 are very good indeed, along with Shogun 2, Three Kingdoms and maybe Rome 2 (only with mods for the latter). Attila, Empire, Napoleon and the Warhammer trilogy are alright games but they don't stand out particularly in comparison to the latter. The rest that is not in my list suck ass

I spent so many hours as a kid playing Medieval 1 on my dad's PC, honestly an incredible game. A shame I lost my disc (and a further shame my PC doesn't have a disc drive anyway) else these videos would have encouraged me to start playing it again.
The atmosphere in the battles is just so beyond anything even Rome 1 and Medieval 2 could create for me, the music and the tactics sync up perfectly

The old games are fun but the archers are overpowered. As soon as you start getting kills filling up your side of the morale meter it makes the units break faster. They went too far in nerfing archers in the later games though.

Man, things like formation deph and terrain having such big impact on the performance of a unit is such a nice thing to see. I also really like that missle units are not completely ineffectual in melee engagements and actually can break lower quality or diminished units in the right conditions, that is something i enjoyed in the other older TW games aswell. Maybe i should give Medieval 1 a go.

At 2:24 you ordered the longbows to fire which ignores friendly units and caused two peasants to die rather than leaving the longbows picking their own targets and be more safe with the shots. Could've been way worse with crossbows/arbalesters because of their flat trajectory so yea it's usually best to let them fire at will.

What modern game enjoyers fail to realise:
Big pixels and a lot of pretty colours =/= good gameplay and strategy
Nothing wrong if you like to play a modern tw game, but stop saying that your McDonalds burger version of the game is better than my Gordon Ramsey handmade burger just because your cheese was spray painted to look more yellow.

another example is sudden strike. sudden strike is an isometric RTT game and the tactics and gameplay are way better than company of heroes 3. thats a 20 year old game beating a brand new one. modern games are dogshit compared to the good ones from 20 years ago, which are basically freeware by now.

@@VoloundIt hurts that in the last decade Total War has only declined. Having worked at a hardware company (it starts with an N and is most famous for making GPUs) it hurts my brain knowing what work has gone into improving computer hardware. The advancement in hardware available for the average consumer have been massive. Transistor have gotten so small that we're reaching the limit of what is possible in the laws of physics and the accuracy of lasers, clockspeeds of GPUs and CPUs have multiple massively. VRAM for high end GPUs in 2000s was measured in MB, now we're looking at GPUs with 24 GB or maybe even 48GB in the future. Yet unit size has only gone from 100 max to 200 max. And despite modern computers having become far more powerful than before there are somehow less factors simulated? Never played Medieval 1 and this video is painful and shows an unfortunate truth. This just reinforces the belief that CA doesn't care about making games anymore

I might just have to buy medieval 1 now, I've played shogun 1 and I would say there really isn't any issues with them other than their age, moving troops is a bit of a pain and the graphics aren't the best but its still fine as is, and the fact that the entire map is factions does make it seem like a upgrade from medieval 2 ngl.

With a hill, sometimes you got no choice but to close distance fast with the army, make it so they can't fire into your men due to them entangled in fighting with his men. To deal with a hill you either need to overwhelm their range with your own Range, use artillery to bombard them, or a huge assault up the hill to close the distance quickly and make his range less useful. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and deal with not great options.
You could distract him with some action in the front, while other troops sneak up on him from behind, but this working depends on the total war title in question.

I've been watching a lot of Chess games and Go lately. Accidentally stumbled upon AI games with AlphaZero beating Stockfish and the 1 in a million game where Lee Sedol defeated AlphaGo (the first and last human to ever beat a real AI in a board game). I've seen Deepmind be hyped to be used in starcraft 2 but that's a lot less interesting than Chess or Go. Another lost opportunity is developing an AI that could play Total War, why? Because it's a lot more nuanced than Starcraft 2. In Starcraft 2, there is no positioning, there is only pure micro/macro. Unlike chess, which is a game about supreme positioning, and who can pin each other's pieces before they start trading pieces. Go, another game about supreme positioning and coexisting in a limited space.
In my mind, Total war was the next logical step. This is the battlefield that these board games were trying to recreate and simulate. AlphaGo and AlphaZero just showed us how far we are in the skill ceiling and our place in these ancient board games. Just how far are we in the skill ceiling on the battlefield of Agincourt, and many other battles presented to us in total war? Total War, originally, was a game about positioning and trading units or positions for superior ones. The games were about so much more than pure micro and more about good decision making and it makes me wonder what it could have been but we'll never know the answer.
