7:11 how about putting the big bracket under the rubber carrier to get a snugger grip on the crossbar and to avoid scratching the top of the crossbar.

Good question. The bottom of the kayak would rest on the longer part of the rack.

Had hell of a time with carriage bolts spinning. Finally took extra nut with vicegrip and held it that way dumb design imo
