Alright, look. My brother-in-law recently picked up a PS5 and frantically tells me he got Astrobot. I had heard it was really good, so I zip on over and check it out. I have a fucking blast with it. I was unbelievably impressed with its' quality. We play for a few hours, and I start to feel like I need a PS5 in my life. Then the hammer drops. It turns out we weren't playing Astro Bot. We had been playing Astro's Playroom. We were head-over-heels for a goddamn tech demo. Unspeakable! That's when I knew I needed Astrobot.
HAHAHA! I love that. I was talking about Astro Bot on Bluesky and someone was like "oh the glorified tech demo" and I was like... "fella, that was GOOD...but THIS AINT THAT!!!"
My son is 6. I have been playing video games since the NES, and have owned almost every PlayStation system released (even the PSP and Vita). Astro it has been a fantastic bonding experience for us. My son likes collecting the cute Astrobots, and then we talk about the history of the games and the characters. He then played Astro’s Playroom and collected the relics, leading us to talk about old hardware. He now has a real appreciation for how far gaming has come. He is now interested in learning about the history and stories. He now has a passion for a whole new world of things of which he initially only had a surface-level appreciation. I understand the backlash to Astrobot getting Game of the Year, but in terms of what this game does external to the game; that being its reinvigoration of passion for gaming, and its way of connecting the old and new; are things that I feel have rightly earned it that title.
Yoooo that's EXACTLY what I was talking about! I don't have any kids so I don't get to see this wonderment, unfortunately... but I love that this is HIS big first game. I love that this has ignited his passion for the medium. For me, that was Sonic 1 on my very own Sega Genesis... when I was 6! I still remember playing it for the first time. Crazy that in 30 years, Astro Bot will be that for him. Super cool. I am curious as to why you understand the backlash for it getting GotY? Honestly, I don't. I mean, I do- in the same way that I understand why people get mad if an animated film wins best picture. I absolutely loved Astro Bot every moment I played it, so it was a hands down GotY for me.
@ I think the backlash comes from the fact that people were expecting Black Myth Wukong to win the award based on sales and popularity. I won’t deny it is a good game, but I think Astrobot transcends “just being a good game” because of the point we have discussed. A game can have an impact outside of the number of units sold or concurrent players. It can remind us of what gaming is about, and how gaming can bring us together…
For me, what stood out in the late 90s to very early 2000s were Playstation platformers. This game right here just signifies its rich history of bringing joy and excitement to all gamers who loved Playstation platformers back then. Truly a well deserved GOTY
I've actually never played any Sly Cooper games! But I have a series on my channel called NOstalgia, where I play older game that I missed when they came out. Maybe I can play one for that? 👀 Which would you suggest?
I never really grew up with a Playstation, until recently, because I was always more of a Nintendo guy and the games on Playstation, Xbox and PC didn't appeal to me, but now I'm really intrigued to try them already thanks to Astro's Playroom. Today I should also get Astro Bot. I can't wait
The fact that this game took my Fav videogame character, Kratos, and gave him an entire level !! Including the music and the use of what seems to be Christopher Judges voice, perfect level.
Love the positivity! The amount of negative response to Astro Bot winning shouldn't surprise me, but it did. How can you hate something so charmingly fun??
Haha and here I was thinking it was sorta easy 😂 of course it is for a lifelong Sony fan like me. But honestly... I got lots of them wrong playing the game!
Well, unfortunately, that couldn’t happen because the PC does not use a dual senses controller and Astro bot requires a ps5 dual sense controller. Meaning certain parts of the game have you blow into the controller? And of course, the controller has a speaker. I don’t think that’s gonna come to PC anytime soon. And I think somebody from digital foundry said it best that yet it would be great to come on PC but unfortunately anybody that’s a PC player may know nothing about the history of Astro bot and the 300+ bots from the PlayStation 1,2,3,4 and 5. And I think that’s why they said it may never probably be on a PC because a PC player may not know anything about the history of a ps console and it’s a massive ips.
These are great points. I talked ad nauseum about how amazing the Dual Sense was in this game then just forgot LOL. It would be tough to port to PC, but maybe they can do like what they have had to do for Wii games that get ports and just... figure it out? I guess we'll see.
It looks like it's not only nostalgia done right in every way imaginable, but also a great game in its own right. Your enthusiasm is intoxicating. Thank you for this video. While I was already going to get Astro Bot first whenever I get a PS5, you showed me it's more than "Sony's Super Mario Galaxy" like I thought it was. Not that it wouldn't be enough, but it seems like it's really special without needing any comparison.
It is absolutely nostalgia weaponized in the most meaningful way! I would recommend this game to anyone who loves not only Mario, but also all 3D platformers. It takes it to the highest level for me. Of course, I'm a huge Sony fan....but even still!
@thegamersician oh me too, I grew up with PS1 and have (re)bought close to 150 PS1 games this year. Ape Escape alone is reason for me to get Astro Bot!
awesome video. Loved ASTRO BOT since the tech demo, the laughs and giggles from the kids while they play fills my house with joy and makes my heart glad.
@thegamersician I think it's cute that they were inspired by Mario, and talked about Nintendo in the speech (with a lot of affection, I must say) But it makes me a little sad that Mario, who is one of the most important characters in gaming, if not THE most important one - never won a GOTY. Despite having much better and original games than Astrobot. Overall I really like Astrobot because of the Nintendo influence it has.
I mean- we all have our perspectives- but I wouldn't say hat any Mario game is "much better" than Astro Bot. Personally, of course... but then again, this is my channel lol I played and beat Mario Odyssey, and grew up with an NES/SNES playing Mario games... even still, I'd put them about on the same level. I've been a Sony guy forever though, so that for sure colors my opinion. I can recognize my biases.. and I assume you have your own ;)
@@thegamersician The idea wasn't even to promote team fights hahaha, I really like both developers. The day Mario gets a GOTY, will be the day the world ends 🤣
Look, I'm a blind person. You know what, I actually can't play this game, they didn't add accessibility. But I have loved watching playthroughs on UA-cam, and I absolutely love, love the soundtrack. So much so I grabbed both soundtracks on iTunes, Astro's Playroom and now Astro Bot, and was very sad when I realized hang on, what happened to the Astro Bot Rescue Mission soundtrack? It actually seems to be gone. The only thing I forgot to do was ask if there's some sort of tactile Astro you can get, i.eP plushy or figure or something, for Christmas. Having something like that would actually help me to understand what the character's shape and such is, although, the next best thing would be, is there a chance anyone here could write back with a description of him? Also, is there legit a way to contact Sony or Kennnith MC Young about trying to get Rescue Mission's soundtrack reinstated on digital music services, or even cd or such?
Man, I wish there were more accessibility options in the game. I know those can be costly to implement but I feel like every game should have some options now in 2024. It just seems like the right thing to do. As far as the soundtrack for Rescue Mission - is it on UA-cam still? I'll check for you. I found a plush of it at Walmart, I can't post links but maybe you can check it out! Astro basically looks like an astronaut. He is a short character. White body. Black visor. Blue eyes that can change shapes to express emotion. He has a little antenna as well. Let me know if you want to explain anything else. I appreciate you checking out the channel!
Yeah, all dev, lets forget about graphic, music, sotrying telling, immersiveness, and just focus on the fun part, we can sell games like crazy, like back in the days.......btw i felt sorry for nintendo that TGA finally came to sense in 2024, otherwise Mario games should appear a few times as GOTY.
I feel like it's a similar issue to what Pixar goes through - for some reason, they don't like giving the 'kid' games awards 🤷🏿♂️ hopefully that changes and it can just be considered for what it is going forward.
I definitely think it's some of that, but I also think it's the people that haven't played it not being able to understand just how GODDANG GOOD IT IS. I feel like there's two states... Before Astro and After Astro (B.A. and A.A) lol
I get it. I didn't have the best opinion of it, tbh. I bought it on sale earlier this month. Had I not decided to give it a try on a whim, we wouldn't be here having this convo!
