I love how a professionally trained chef who developed a fine palate and can make amazing dishes from scratch still gets excited about all the processed junk food!!!
I went to Thailand many years ago and fell in love with the cuisine which I knew NOTHING about before visiting, never tried, never knew what it was about. I've never tried to cook Thai recipes at home because they appeared so complex and the ingredient lists seemed so foreign to me I didn't even know where to begin. Your videos really demystify Thai cooking and I am finally able to make all this deliciousness at home, like if I had a Thai friend show it to me and guide me through every step and every ingredient. This video just makes me want to go back to Thailand so bad! I've been to many countries but Thailand is still one of my favorite trips - wonderful people, beautiful nature and, in my opinion, the most flavorful cuisine!
I tasted both Tomyum and Larb Pretz, from my Thai friend, who brought to Japan with her. Definitely awesome. First time I tried the "larb" I was hook. I asked her what make larb different from other salad (Sontum). She explained a little bit and give me a seasoning packet for larb. Then I tried to learn to make it at home, then I found this channel 😍 It was 7 years ago and I grew with this channel since then, loving Thai cuisine and sometime Pai's recipes from her MIL as well.
Pai is a very warm and authentic soul, I emailed twice asking for recommendation on her upcoming cookbook. She replied to both emails almost immediately. As for her display of wonderful Thai snacks, I'm only 10 mins walk from Golden Mile (mini Thailand) Center.
The one cooking item I brought back from Thailand was a sticky rice steamer, with 2 bamboo baskets because my mom said "get 2, you never know". Still use it to this day, 10 years later, still on the first basket lol
I just came back from Thailand and brought pork floss - i love it sooooo much!!! It’s like jerky, but sweeter and the texture is obviously different, I would also highly recommend getting nam prik pao which is Thai chili paste for Tom yum, because it’s very expensive if you buy it outside Thailand, I made Tom yum with this paste for the first time and it tasted amazing! Another one of my favorites that I always always buy is green tea Kit Kat - it is also extremely expensive if you’re getting it from overseas instead of buying in Thailand itself. And last, but not least is lime flavored lays chips - if you’re into sour foods it’s definitely for you - very refreshing! Happy shopping in Thailand 😋 🇹🇭
You have one of the best cooking sites on UA-cam, They are so enlightening, entertaining, and instructive. I binge-watch them all the time. Thank You and please keep them coming.
When you travel, you should take a soft sided bag inside your checked luggage. Then you have a bag for all the wonders you buy. Works wonders for bringing back the haul!
I always bring back milk toffee, a Sri Lankan delicacy and Kandos chocolates. My mum on the other hand gets her spices, trinkets, and spicy snacks BUT we always always bring back rubber slippers( flip flops) as they last ages in comparison to the U.K ones
Luckily Thai groceries are easy to find here in Hong Kong. When it comes to Lay's, the squid "jerky" flavour is my favourite, followed by sweet basil that Pai recommended. Instant noodles are fantastic, too, and I like Nissin's tom yum goong flavour stir noodles very much. If you think the tom yum goong Pretz doesn't pop, the noodles will satisfy you. Coconut crisps are just as great. I haven't tried a lot of brands, but Crispconut isn't bad. Three flavours are available to me, namely original, chocolate and caramel. All of them are delicious, striking a wonderful balance between sweet and salty. The only thing is that the caramel flavour doesn't taste terribly caramelly. BTW, I really hope I'll get to try the banana and tamarind sandwich cookies because I like sour food.
Your husband is right- I remember buying the Thai version of Red Bull in Chinatown in Philadelphia in the mid-90s, and it was drastically different than the carbonated crap we get in North America now. It’s disappointing because I haven’t been able to find the import version of Red Bull since at least the 2000s, and I do miss it. I was so happy to see that iconic bottle shape and classic logo. Enjoyed this episode a lot, thanks for sharing!!
I hope this video helps people out 👍🏻 it's always great to bring back things from other countries that you cannot get anywhere else not even online - especially when it comes to snacks
Great idea with the sticky rice holder as a garlic and aromatic container. I brought a few home with me from a trip to Laos and didn't know what to do with them, but now I have an idea.
Great choices, but of all the things we brought back the only things we have left are the small dishes we bought at Suvarnabhumi Outdoor Market and, our favorite, our Spirit House.
So fun to watch! I have exactly the same stuff as you brought back. This time around my carry on luggage was filled with crisps in exotic flavours, like crab fried rice, miang khan, Tom Yam etc. I always bring back all kind of chilly dips and sauces, and this time I also brought back fresh noodles.
I spent eight years in Thailand. I miss a lot of stuff, but now they opened up a Thai grocer and restaurant ten minutes from home where I can order some things like this as they frequently go to bring stuff back. While I was watching this, I suddenly got the munchies. Seven Eleven here in Michigan came out with some new varieties of chips. I finished a whole bag of the Spicy Bayou Blaze New Orleans Style Ripple chips watching this. I give these chips a ten out of ten ⭐ s. Highly recommend. Give it a try. I am hooked!
Ages ago during Halloween from where I'm from, there were vendors selling grilled dried squid and those were sooooo good! It makes it smoky and crispy for only being grilled lesd than 10 minutes! You can try grilling your dried squid to make it crispy again. 😊
Your video has helped me fill up my luggage with many many amazing finds during my current trip to Thailand! I would love to see a video of recommended places to shop for these goodies while in Bangkok! I just discovered Makro and it was AMAZING! 😁
I´ll be watching this video again when I finally go back to visit BKK early next year just to know what to try out and take back with me. I can hardly wait. Love this video!!!😍
For anyone that wants Thai crispy chili snacks, Trader Joe’s sells a pretty good one. It’s also Birds Eye chilies and they’re crispy with sesame seeds. It was actually spicier than a salted egg yolk flavor that we got at a market while in Thailand.
Those chili chips are the best. If you like spicy food, you need to try it. Make sure you buy the snack kind (crunchy), not the normal dried chili for cooking! You can find them at typical supermarkets.
Thai Red Bull is stronger and more syrupy. And costs next to nothing. Every moped and tuk tuk driver lives on them. Wish it existed here in the US. Great video Pai.
Thank you for sharing Thai products. I missed going to Thailand so much I remembered first trip there going to Big C food court I was shocked so many choices of food don't know what to choose. I chose Rad Na that you made on the last video. I saw a big pot of gravy and I didn't bother asking since I don't speak Thai and I just asked for it. I tried it on Ho Fun and the fried noodles both are so good. Also they have the best products for skin care men. I hope I could go back there and relax in the warm sun and enjoy the so affordable foods there. Thanks
My recent obsession is dried mango- my favourite is the Thai brand ina green and yellow pouch- I’ve tried all the Australian local brands and they just aren’t the same!
My moms Thai coworker gave us some Durian candy and I love it. Durian is a well known fruit where we are originally from too but I never had it cause I grew up in Europe. I noticed tho the only durian I can eat is that candy 😂
My favourite Thai snack which can’t be brought back on a trip are the egg rolls with pork floss in them and the compressed pork floss rolls (that look like something else completely😅)!
And I'm going to Thailand and Singapore in February next year. Can't wait to go back. I miss the people, food, the food, the food and the wonderful food, and they have such amazing food. And also, hoping to shoot some videos with the new Gimbal. I'm an amateur, but hope something may be youtube worthy.
My god Pailin, you made me think you visited my condo and borrowed my kitchen stuff. The knife, peeler, steamed rice containers, mortar & pestle. They all look exactly as mine, to the smallest details, even the colors. I checked, my gadgets, they're still here in BKK. Regarding the Oyster Sauce, I remember using the same brand you are showing, but I was told by many passers-by, while I was trying to pick one from the many varieties available, to select the one with the label showing a picture of a woman pouring sauce in a large wok by one hand, while holding a long metal spatula by the other. By the way, Food festival events have started in BKK and it's amazing. Keep up the good work Pailin. Husain-Tula
Hahahaha, I promise I didn't steal them! So the oyster sauce with the woman is a classic brand that's been around a long time so many people use it as a default. The Megachef is newer so I think people are still learning about it.
Much to my wife's chagrin I always bring back the various dried aquid snacks in bulk. Dried pressed, dried tenticle in sweet chili, shredded squid, etc... To the point where I can only eat it when she's out of town (or secretly while she's alseep).
I absolutely love your presentation of these Thai snack items! It's so entertaining. I live in Thailand and now I have to move out of my comfort zone to look for some of these items. Being a 7-11 frequenter (like most people in Thailand, because of more than 13,000 7-11 stores around the country), I know that many of the items you presented are not that easy to find. Oh, and my French friend fell in love with Falleso Kafir Lime haircare products, too!
OMG! Book me a flight to Thailand. I am literally salivating. As much as it is hard to watch, I would like to see more videos like this for future references. I am gonna get them somehow..
As someone who could just munch sweeties endlessly, I love your enthusiasm about these snacks 😄if you ever come to visit Finland, I tell you you gotta taste Finnish salmiac candies - especially those found in buffet shelves in markets! three in particular: half red half black giant flat skulls, and two smaller flat car shaped black ones! once you get past the first shock as a foreigner on how chewy and sticky and salty they are, I swear you are going to travel back here just to eat more of them 😋
I remember having Lab flavor Pretz the first time as I was a teenager. It's incredible!! I'm glad you got the Megachef oyster sauce. It's been my favorite for a long time. Here in Basel, Switzerland, we started having Megachef products since a few years ago. It's becoming more popular also amongst Thai restaurants here. I'm curious what you think about it. :)
Hi Adam here and she likes it :) In fact it's the one she used in her latest (yet to come out) recipe - but it wasn't available here when she did her Soy 101 video. Cheers! Adam
Just got back from a golf trip from Chiangmai. I am surprised you didn’t mention or brought back the curly pork skin crackles w the brinjal chilli dip. It’s light but bulky so addictive. Banana chips yes they are different from Thailand.
For years I’ve thought Red Bull branding looked familiar having grown up in HK. Now I know why! Had not idea the brown glass bottles of Red Bull in Asia is the OG.
Last time I went home to Burma I had a large bag stuffed with various kinds of dried fish and shrimp. Everything was wrapped well in plastic to prevent smell but I was afraid customs would think I was importing for commercial purposes but all was ok.
A brass wok is actually useful, but only when you need it, it transfers heat much more effective than iron/steel. So, for some desserts the brass wok is not only useful but almost necessary. BUT, don't burn yourself, the handles also gets very hot!
I need to go to Asia and get a suitcase of favorite items. I might try to bring back fresh durian. 😂 Nice products Pai and it's nice to see unique items that Thailand has. 👍
I learned about laab from my sister's ex-husband, who is Lao, back in like 1990, so when people started talking about "larb" I was very confused. I remember it quite distinctly, because it was the spiciest thing I'd ever tasted, by a large margin, and after entirely too much water failed to quell the burning on my tongue, my former brother-in-law took pity on me and handed me the salt shaker, told me to put some salt directly on the hot spot, which finally relieved the pain. I could probably pin down the exact date because it was the day my niece was baptized.
I just returned and I bought almost 70% of your recommended snacks... LOL! Trying each one of them after dinner. I love the Jasmine Rice Herbal Soap, it smells so so good. Only available at Bangkok Airport only. Thanks for all your recommendations 😊.
I just found this channel, and what a lovely episode. But I feel sorry for the apparent lack of Thai products in Canada. Here in Sweden we have had Megachef for years, Thai Chips, and much more, even fresh vegetables in weekly, or in some place biweekly, deliveries. Then again we have direct flights, maybe that’s why.
What happened with placing the fork and spoon neatly together at the 4 or 5 o'clock position on your plate after finishing your meal? Is that not done anymore?
The Party Caramel!! So nostalgic 😭 I would've brought back stacks of Taro fish jerky as well...the microwave trick to make them crispy blew my mind as a kid
😂 I'm in Thailand right now for a holiday in Hatyai and Krabi and on the way back to Malaysia. I found the scented candle blossom coconut milk I. 7-11 just now. Thanks for recommending it. Oh, at Ao Nang Night Market, I bought a palm sugar drink instead of palm sugar. But thats because I used to live in Terengganu and I never had it before.
Do you show using the rambutan seeding knife anywhere? Maybe you could do a video on fruit preparation. I know Thais are very particular about fruit preparation and I have noticed that many people agree there is a right way to prepare each fruit.
totally saving this video to watch again before my trip to Thailand next March! You mentioned specialty shop for the palm sugar, where should I go I’m BKK? Also, definitely interested at getting the crisp squid , I bet it goes really well with a beer! 😋 where can I find that squid box in BKK? Btw, always a big fan of your channel, getting your book preordered for Christmas ! Thank you for always doing such an informative video!!! Big fan of yours ❤❤❤
The squid is from S&P which is available all over bangkok. The palm sugar I got didn't come from BKK and unfortunately I don't have a place to recommend for in BKK, sorry! But as I said, anything available in Thailand is gonna be better than here.
Thai chili chips are so good! I eat too much of them and it makes me stomach hurt but it’s so worth it. Omg! I love the idea of storing garlic and shallots in the stick rice container! I really want to know more about this aromatic candle? What is the name? I have to buy one! And I absolutely love your page! ❤❤
I love how a professionally trained chef who developed a fine palate and can make amazing dishes from scratch still gets excited about all the processed junk food!!!

One of the few good things about living away from home, is going back and bringing back your favourite treats to share with your family!
This was just so much fun to watch! I so enjoyed your enthusiasm and joy!
When you travel, you should take a soft sided bag inside your checked luggage. Then you have a bag for all the wonders you buy. Works wonders for bringing back the haul!
Oh Pai, you misunderstand what gifts to beloved coworkers should be, get them durian candy and tell them nothing, that’s the way.
😂😂😂
I miss dried Durian chips
🤤😋🤤
I like durian
Haha I did that! I brought some durian candy for the roomies. One liked them shockingly but the other ran away after opening the bag 🤣🤣🤣
Very useful and practical. Now I k ow what to buy when I’m in Thailand next time. Thank you so much I love your channel
I always bring back milk toffee, a Sri Lankan delicacy and Kandos chocolates. My mum on the other hand gets her spices, trinkets, and spicy snacks BUT we always always bring back rubber slippers( flip flops) as they last ages in comparison to the U.K ones
Nothing like 💋 kissing your Thai girlfriend after she ate smoked fish 🐠 the night before.

I hope this video helps people out 👍🏻 it's always great to bring back things from other countries that you cannot get anywhere else not even online - especially when it comes to snacks
Sometimes I forget what a great sense of humor Pai has 😂
Your brother’s commentary is always funny. Glad to see it back.
Ivam here living in Bangkok and I always find the snack section overwhelming because of all the choices. These sound like a good place to start.
Great idea with the sticky rice holder as a garlic and aromatic container. I brought a few home with me from a trip to Laos and didn't know what to do with them, but now I have an idea.

With the squid, we get that in Singapore too, but we rip it off from the box and put it over the grill for flavour and texture purposes.
Seeing the Lays chips reminded me of a Thai BL I watched last year- “Vice Versa” and also “Until we Meet Again” and “between Us”🤷♀️👍🏻🥰
It might be tough to justify the size and weight of a giant mortar and pestle in your luggage, but my god is it appreciated in the kitchen!
Hope to see more episodes like this. I miss Thailand!
pailin's coming through with a new set up and 4K QUALITY VIDEO
Thanks for noticing 😉
@@PailinsKitchen I love it! my comfort channel to watch when I want to chill out. so glad you guys decided to upgrade the quality of the contents.
Your video has helped me fill up my luggage with many many amazing finds during my current trip to Thailand! I would love to see a video of recommended places to shop for these goodies while in Bangkok! I just discovered Makro and it was AMAZING! 😁
Love this Lady's Videos, she always has my full attention.
Thai Fired Chicken chips sound Great
Pai, pop those dried squid on a hot pan or a grill for a minute or so and they'll become crispy again. Sooo good!
I´ll be watching this video again when I finally go back to visit BKK early next year just to know what to try out and take back with me. I can hardly wait. Love this video!!!😍
Laab Pretz is definitely one of the most flavorful snacks. It's very distinct and very close to the real laab as well.
Thankyou for mentioning the pronunciation of Larb . I also have a brass wok that I use occasionally but just love it .
For anyone that wants Thai crispy chili snacks, Trader Joe’s sells a pretty good one. It’s also Birds Eye chilies and they’re crispy with sesame seeds. It was actually spicier than a salted egg yolk flavor that we got at a market while in Thailand.
Great post Palin! Thank you for sharing
I got addicted to the truffle potato chips ! it's an A+ !
Great vid, love your work
Those chili chips are the best.

These are also the 4 categories I buy every time I visit Thailand.
You much try durian chips 😊 It's best.
I'd love to see some Asian Christmas foods next time!🎂🎄
My god Pailin, you made me think you visited my condo and borrowed my kitchen stuff.

I LOVE the fried chilis, they are so addictive!
Fascinating selection of items. So many unique things.
Pai - one time I brought back a jar of lemongrass powder since it was difficult to get fresh ones where I was living.
Always happy to see videos of you. My apologies for saying it, but I highly preferred the old intro (and video).
I wish I had brought back Thai dinnerware - the ones I saw at the World Trade Center mall in Bangkok looked really nice
Much to my wife's chagrin I always bring back the various dried aquid snacks in bulk. Dried pressed, dried tenticle in sweet chili, shredded squid, etc... To the point where I can only eat it when she's out of town (or secretly while she's alseep).
This would've all ended up in the incinerators at Kingsford-Smith if you tried bringing it back to Australia...
Thank you for your insight of snacks and the other topics.
The coconut milk smoked with a candle, wow that to me is interesting! Never seen that before
What a fun episode. I'm going to try the caramel potato chips the next time we visit.
I absolutely love your presentation of these Thai snack items! It's so entertaining. I live in Thailand and now I have to move out of my comfort zone to look for some of these items. today I learned that Red Bull has its origins in Thailand, how interesting!
oh my!! that first thai chili snack looks SO GOOD. I have to find something like this!!
Great video Pai 😊

i bought a small bottle of megachef oyster sauce from BKK back to Singapore last week! 30 Baht!
Sawadee ka. 🙏
Please try to recreate those banana chip sandwich cookies for us?!? Pleeeease?
You can buy Mega chef oyster sauce here in Toronto
For years I’ve thought Red Bull branding looked familiar having grown up in HK. Now I know why! Had not idea the brown glass bottles of Red Bull in Asia is the OG.
A must try is Jim Jaew flavoured Sun Chips!
That dried squid snack is also made in Hawaii but its coated with milk chocolate sauce instead. Never tasted it tho...

Going to Bangkok again January 28th, writing a shopping list now :🙂
I'm sooooo jealous!!

Oooh chilli chips... sprinkle on ice cream 💗💗💗
I put the squid jerky in an air fryer to crisp it up
So interesting! Thailand is top on my list of places to visit!

i once gave pocky to a cute thai girl. her eyes went wide and she just had to show her mother what she got like a little kid. it was so cute.
The Party Caramel!! So nostalgic 😭 I would've brought back stacks of Taro fish jerky as well...the microwave trick to make them crispy blew my mind as a kid
I always bring back the lime flavored tooth paste, i dont know why but i enjoy it.
thanks. pretty as always and great cooking info. ive learned a lot
8:06 I wouldn't be surprised if there is an r because the company was based in England where they barely pronounce the r anyway.
Looks delicious!!! Seen some different varieties of snacks at my local Asian stores too!!!
lay´s sweet basil! my lokas thai store has it, i eat atleast 1 a week.
That oyster sauce is sold in my supermarket, I love it :D
totally saving this video to watch again before my trip to Thailand next March!
Great video on the snack side what about durian chips love them
Thai chili chips are so good! I eat too much of them and it makes me stomach hurt but it’s so worth it.
Omg! I love the idea of storing garlic and shallots in the stick rice container!
I really want to know more about this aromatic candle? What is the name? I have to buy one!
And I absolutely love your page!
