Mannix (Mike Connors) was not only one of the great TV stars of my childhood-- but the greatest neighbor ever too in real life. I lived across the street from him and his wife for many years. He was an amazing guy. Honored to know him and his sweet wife.

Schrifrin one of the great composers of the period.
When I hear this I'm 12 years old again, it's 1968 and babysitting my little cousin. When 10pm rolled around on Saturday night, that iconic Mannix theme would play and I'd be transfixed by the music!! Years later, I'm still transfixed by the exuberance and thrills of Schiffrin's theme. The show was OK, but the theme will stick around forever. I love hearing about how Leonard Berstein, Lalo Schiffrin and Quincy Jones all took lessons from Nadia Boulanger in composition. That's quite a trio of Maestros to brag on!
For some reason the theme just popped into my head and now I cant stop listening , and that first change into the piano solo, you know the one , brings tears and strength to my eyes ,REMINDING ME OF MY DADS GENERATION and will not go away.

I was born in 1951 , so Lalo Schifrin is one of the major film music influences of my youth. I still have the vinyl LPs of Mission Impossible , Mannix, Bullitt , and Dirty Harry. (Album covers are art.) I worn out an 8-track of the soundtrack to Bullitt. Lalo, if you see this...THANK YOU!!!

Lalo Schifrin wrote most of the popular show songs of my childhood. I think he and Neal Hefti are the most overlooked composers ever. My parents watched Mannix when I was a child and I loved the theme song even then. Thank you for sharing this magnificent mix.

Well said. My father used to watch Mannix religiously when I was a teenager. I guess he looked upon him as a man's man, whose dauntlessness and style he wished to emulate.

Amazing piece! This track....solidified my love for jazz...in 1969. This tune vibrates at such a high frequency.
Tight Lope and Mannix both starring Mike Connors were also very popular in Japan. When I was a child, my father watched the under cover detective story. I do not however know the main theme composer of Mannix is Lalo Schifrin. Thank you so much for your helping me to remember late father.

I used to watch this show as a Kid
Piano lessons for me as a child and into high School were very boring at times but I played by ear and when I finally learned the theme from mission impossible and mannix by the same composer Lalo schifrin it opened up this whole new world of jazz TV background music 👌

Lalo Schifrin is a genius of course, but credit also to the performers, arrangers, producers and sound engineers. Nothing this good could ever be done again unless it was someone like Tarantino insisting on a classic analogue sound.

VERY HOT SOUNDS of the Sixties, baby, ready to take off after the bad guys! truly great action music soundtrack from that Era of Great American Television Heroes.
Before I saw the show I wasn't as impressed by this theme as the famous Mission:Impossible theme by Lalo Schifrin. M:I was more energetic and had that unusually rhythm while Mannix felt old fashioned. Then I actually watched the show and the theme is played way more times than M:I plays its theme! It's because the action on Mission:Impossible is actually slower "safe cracking" type scenes so instead Schifrin plays the the theme called "The Plot" over them. While the Mannix theme can be played in all kinds of variations in a single episode!

As a trumpet player I would play one part, go back and play another. Tasty music and fun to play by ear! Question: why is this soundtrack edited? Cuts off in the midst of many selections!
It's why he calls them a "suite" - he's edited it down from the full recording.

Neal Hefti wrote the theme song to the Odd Couple. Henry Mancini wrote the Pink Panther theme songs. All of these guys were around at the same time.
