Love the authenticity (quite the contrast of how guarded Mel was in pressers) and what he did at a school with a lot of obstacles. I can't wait to see what the team looks like next Fall.
Well, you guys got my coach. No hard feelings, good luck Jonathan, you gave us hope at OSU. Thanks Pac 12 management for screwing up a great conference.
I so like that he says he's a process guy. That is Saban's mantra. But then again, Tuck said he was a process guy...and that was a lie. At least we won't hear "complimentary football" 10 times in a presser.
Duck fan here and he was always a concern. He upset us a few times and cant say that i will look too much forward to having to face this guy again, might take a min but this guy can coach, and he is a huge instate rival its not easy to give him props, but you guys hit it out of the park. He had team talent ranks 10th and 11th in the pac and 60th nationally in roster talent and finished in the top 3-4 the last few years and had them to 16th and 10th in the last two years . only lost to teams who were ranked higher #4washington 11-0 by 2 and Arizona by 10-3 by 3, and #12USC by 3 and only got beat bad by oregon 31-7 but dude beat oregon last year after he was down 28 in the 4th quarter and did it by 22 straight runs. just crazy. i said a&m should look at him when that happened but their loss. he is responsible for osu top 3 seasons all-time, best season ever as a qb after he walks on starts 39 games and the other 2 best seasons as a coach
How do you know Miss Cleo that Jonathan Smith is not going to be competent??? I would like to know your professional opinion and I would also like to know how you can look into the future that’s a pretty talented skill you have there lol…
Low ego is great. No personal brand handbook, no NFTs, no pitbulls, exotic cars, etc. Don't overhaul the culture. No relentless, no deep water, no swag surfing. I appreciate him being as honest as he could about his job when finishing up the season at Oregon State. He still has much to prove at this level but we know he can get us back on track at the very least. Really hope this works out!
this is a big leadership challenge, the program is obviously not in good shape. i hope everyone knows we're likely to have a couple of lean years before we start to see results. i support coach smith and respect him for taking this on.
A perspective from an Oregon State alum: If you really look at the past several years of coaching at Oregon State, you will realize MSU got the hood ornament while Trent Bray is the engine of Oregon State. Before Bray took over at defensive coordinator , Smith had losing records at OSU. Bray was the real difference. Bray is the reason for Smith's success. Smith will do ok, but Bray will win because he already has. With Smith you are getting zero loyalty. As soon as he sniffs a couple million a year more, he will walk on MSU as well. We shall see! ... update Trent Bray gave Smith the finger and is now the Head Coach of OSU. There are an incredible amount of the players who hold loyalty to Bray and will stay in Corvallis.
Oregon state just gets dumped on at every turn. Years and years of poor football team. Good football started in the late 90s but coaches always leave and we go backwards. I just keep hope things will change for the better!
Thankful that he is a family guy and didn't use any corny tag lines to start. Given the options, I do feel like we got lucky to land him (if UCLA decides to make a change, I wonder if he will be wondering...). I could not stand watching the old coach's pressers. They were so cringy even when things were going well. I think Coach Smith will be more transparent. Go Green!
what a coward. This dude was ready to bail for weeks. Lost my respect for him. Hope this move blows up in his face. The grass ain’t always greener on the other side…
@@spartandogs3126 please 🙄, let’s not act like Jonathan’s a minimum wage worker or something. He’s a multi millionaire, and he and his family were doing just fine in Corvallis. Doesn’t matter though. The last Oregon State coach to bail for the Big 10 (Mike Riley to Nebraska) failed miserably. I expect a similar outcome for Smith. The stakes are higher, he needs to recruit higher, and the administration at Michigan State won’t be patient with him like they were at Oregon State. Good luck
People move in their careers all the time. Opportunities arise and people take them. The timing can’t always be perfect. Get off your self-righteous soap box.
@@stevencook4002 with all due respect, I think you need to look up what the definition of self righteous is, because I’m not being that at all. The fact of the matter is, he stabbed his alma mater in the back when they needed him the most and ran for the hills. But again, I don’t think it matters in the long run. I have a hard time seeing Smith succeed in that conference with a fan base that won’t give him the same level of support his alma mater did. Good luck MSU…
What was odd is that he didn't talk much at all about his playing career, being the QB during OSU's best season ever. It kind of sounds like he was just a football geek and not a player. Haller alludes to Smith'e penchant for taking risks. which reading a bunch of OSU fan's posts, they didn't exactly like that so much. Then you think of all the bonehead calls by Barnett this season and it gives you pause. It almost makes you wonder if Barnett was trying to emulate Smith to get points for the job.
@spartandogs3126 Only racists claim someone is playing the race card. It's just a form of silencing an expression of opinion. The hiring of Jonathan Smith was a whitelash to Mel Tucker. Tucker is innocent, and the accusations are completely false! This isn't the first time a person of color has been falsely accused of sexual harassment!
Scott Frost failed trying to save his alma mater, Jonathan Smith abandoned his alma mater to die in the G5. One has infinitely more character and class than the other
As a Wolverine fan I hate Michigan st and Ohio. I think you have yourself a great coach. I really like him. Tucker, dantonio, I don’t like their character, but yall new coach, I love this guy. I’m glad you got a proven great character coach. U will win more games next season than u did this season, but year 2 I do believe you will get a bowl game. I can see you winning 4 games next season maybe 5, year 2 I can see 7 or 8, but 3rd year is unlikely to the recruiting from this first season. Y’all have talent, but yall need to quit this toxicity that yall have had for about 5 years. Sincerely, Good luck to a good future and rivalry game with us. Great Blue!!!
he is good in the portal buyt not the greatest recruitrer but he was decent at washington asa an OC. might bea the oregon st has a hard time with Oregon being the powerhouse in the state and beavers not as relevent as Washington or MSU
@@meraki5776 yeah, I really think Big 10 will be the marquee conference going forward, but I think he will get better talent at msu than he could get at Oregon state. To many hot beds in Midwest. I’m sure he got all the leftovers at Oregon state but look at the wins he was able to get this year. I think he will do good.
Blue fan taking a moral high ground...now ive seen it all, you guys have the memory of a goldfish...i think we will be fine as long as the NCAA, BIG10, and FBI are not all on campus in the same year and if smith dont start and end the season with three game suspensions for recruiting violations and illegal scouting...SMH at op.

gonna be awesome watching this UM - MSU rivalry for years to come with two competent coaches at the helm

Great Hire! Only thing that the program took a blow is both QB's Houser and Levitt are going into transfer portal along with LB Snow
Houser is terrible. No great loss. Hopefully Smith will bring his 5 star qb with him...

Tucker heard Smith renamed the MSU football facility The Beaver Lodge - now high-tailin' it back to East Lansing.
