They will do it for humans as well. Lawrence Anthony saved a herd of elephants from death and illegal poachers after being able to communicate to the matriarch to basically “don’t leave this area”.
When he died of a heart attack the elephants showed up to his home (some traveling over a day) and held a vigil basically outside his home for two days.
Then every year on the anniversary of his death they would come back and pay their respects to the man who saved them. It’s mind blowing how much humans overestimate themselves and underestimate animals.

In my opinion, I believe Tahlequah, the Orca whom swam with her dead calf around for over two weeks, was trying to get our (human) attention. Tahlequah, also known as J35, is a member of the endangered orca population known as the Southern Residents in Puget Sound/Salish Sea area. At the time of this event in 2018, many members of the Southern Residents were documented to have been in physical states of starvation, due to shipping and boating activity in the area, (which affect their ability to hunt their primary food source of Chinook salmon), the overfishing of this primary food source, and habitat loss and destruction. I honestly believe cetaceans, and especially Orcas to be present and consciously aware to the point of actually trying to communicate with us...and in this case, to garner attention for the condition and status of the Southern Residents. And at that time, it did. Worldwide. The low birthrates among all the Southern Resident pods (J, K, and L) is likely directly correlated to and a consequence of human activity.... It would be wonderful if more people became interested and curious about these amazing beings and shared what they discover with others... The Southern Residents still are really struggling and more awareness and attention could potentially help more than we may think. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for reading.

Anything with a nervous system will be capable of emotional responses. The level and complexity of said responses define the differences between individuals, species, cultures, et cetera. The rituals themselves are merely consequences of the material universe. However, there's no reason to assume material expression MUST precede animus. Just happens to.
My point is that you comparing us to them is proof intelligence need not precede speech, just does /sometimes/ merely /by chance/. "More emotional" and/or "passionate" is not a virtue, by any means. Passion is a merely a layterm meant to convey 'surplus' of emotions. Neither positive nor negative conveyance attach to the word.
I'm quite certain Jeffrey Dahmer was /very/ passionate about his activities. As were the Nazi's during WW2. Grow a brain stem before speaking, please?

This is much like the Elephant 🐘 death rituals! ❤.
Who’s to say that these animals w/ large complex brains 🧠 do or don’t have the ability, will or sense to grasp what death is?
Elephants 🐘 to this day still stop as a heard when they come to the bones of another elephant, sniffling, calling out, pickling up a piece of bone to hold & examine it. The whole Herd does this, each heard that passes by the remains All do this as a show of respect & for some others it may be their own family member there.
Respect for the animals that we have yet may not fully understand is a great gift to pass to our children & grandchildren… so they can see & experience life’s worth in All its Glory before they are going extinct. Like elephants are in trouble so are the whales we seem to enjoy so much. Save them don’t just watch, see if you can help. ❤❤❤

Taliqua carrying her dead baby for 17days happened in and around Bellingham bay. It was observed closely and reported about in our local media. It was widely accepted as not only a mourning behavior but also as Taliqua sending a message to the world about the perils of how the environmental conditions are affecting these large, intelligent mammals. Low birth weights bc of declining salmon population, building up of environmental toxins, noise pollution, etc...
There's no way that orcas don't comprehend that another member of the pod is dead and that they're trying to keep it alive; it took Taliqua an enormous amount of energy expenditure to keep her dead baby afloat and carry her body around for that amount of time and with the entire pod supporting this event.
I recommend a book titled 'Communicating with Orcas' by Mary Getten who communicated with these local pods as well as orcas worldwide. It's one of my favorite books of any genre. It gives indepth accounts of just how remarkably evolved and beyond intelligent these massive, top predator and beautiful mammals are.

Very interesting! There are many pack or herd animals who honor and morn their dead. Elephants, wolves and dogs come first to my mind, and I'm sure there are many others. It seems in their own way, they are more 'human' than most people are. We can learn so much from the animals if we were just willing to slow down enough to watch them and learn the very important life lessons they can teach us.

12:10 I’m curious if they recognize the voice of the call used to lure them and they either know that orca is right there in the pod and not making that call, or perhaps they know for a fact that that particular orca call had died many years ago and they know it’s a human trick lol. Either way, the fact that those calls did not work is actually more impressive because they’re not easily fooled by a recording of sound. Maybe their calls have an emotional echo and when we replay a call there is no emotion to follow therefore not a real orca (as an example I’m no biologist just a curious onlooker)

I love how scientists have a hard time acknowledging that certain animals (especially highly intelligent animals) have emotions like grief when it’s clear that it is grief and there’s yet to be evidence that proves otherwise.
So instead of saying “it’s likely it could be grief. There’s no evidence YET to prove otherwise but you never know.”
Instead it’s always “some say it’s grief but even though we haven’t found any other evidence we think it’s probably not grief” 😂
It’s so funny bc it reminds me that scientists are always as smart as they make themselves out to be. Emotional intelligence is still intelligence and if you lack the ability to include that in your scientific studies then your studies aren’t very well done imo.
