dumoulin11 my dwarf gourami hasn’t touched his plants but his is scared senseless of the kuhli loaches, one swims in circles and it just freaks him out
My dwarf gourami that is supposedly a peaceful community fish has been murdering my ember tetras and taking bites out of my beautiful Aponogeton Ulvaceous plant. 😡
I would actually put goldfish in the nibblers category. Cuase they really aren't that bad.in fact most plants are safe with them.the only plants they really seem to touch are soft stem plants.also their digging behavouir can be managed by putting river stones around the base of the plants so they can't up root them. I know this to be the case cuase I have done planted goldfish tanks.
so far I've had success with amazon swords, java ferns, anubias, crypt wendtii, java moss, those bulb plants you get from multi packs and dwarf aquarium lillies. basically anything with thick leaves and decent sized roots is goldfish safe.you can also test plants by trying to rip them apart.the easier it is to rip them apart the less likely they are to survive in a goldfish tank.
Good to know beacuse I had lots of stem plants and in a week all gone and thats with 1 goldfish thanks !! But then in my pond and I have stem plants with goldfish and their growing so well every week I have to cut them back then I root them to give away
The interesting thing about them is that goldfish are pooping machines, if we can tap into that power for planted tanks, the results would be glorious.
The first fish I added to my planted tank are Buenos Aires Tetras. It has only been about 5 hours and they have been nipping at the java ferns, but just the tips of the leaves, and don't seem too interested after the first bite. Luckily, most of my plants are of the stronger variety on this list, so I'm too concerned. The biggest issue I have read with this fish, is they eat constantly, so if you're not feeing them 3 time a day with a varied diet, they will eat what they can find. Given this video is 3 years old, this could be a nice update if someone reads the comments. I will have to see how they do over the next month or so and have to add more.
Same, mine ate the grass I planted down to the sand! So, to keep them happy, I offer them blanched cucumber and algae wafers, they really seem to love that. Hope this helps. 😊
Thomas M Yeah I had 3 mystery snails and a banana plant in one of my tanks and they took bites out of it but all the other plants the snails didn’t touch
My mystery snail doesn't let me have any carpeting plant. And he likes to eat all the new plants that I introduce into the aquarium. He wont eat the ones that are well established, but the new lush plants that are not yet well rooted 😅 Sometimes I have to put my snail into "time out" for a week or two, in another aquarium, to give a chance for my new plants to settle before he eats them.
Are you feeding your snails? Are they in acidic water? Hungry snails will find food if you dont feed them and in acidic water mine like to chew stems of leaves just to the point the leaf dies, then they come back a day or 2 later and finish eating the dying leaves. At ph of 7.8 my snails do not touch the plants, I feed them 2x a week- green beans and after 12 hours or so I remove the leftovers. I also toss in the cores from lettuce. I put them in raw, green beans go in the tank right from the freezer. Try it, wont hurt to try.
@@atcaleb I feed zuccini to my snail. I have tried giving him many other vegetables but he doesnt seem to like them. I also tried with the like veggie wafers you give to plecos, but he never touched them. It seems like sometimes he just wants the plants, as the zuccini is floating there, untouched, and he goes after the plants. 😅 The PH is usually around 7.8-8 btw. That being said, I havent tried with green beans specifically, so I will give them a go to see what happens haha.
@@sarav9798 I've tried wafers too and didnt see much interest only a mess a few hours later. I am so attached to my snails I put them in their own tank, no fish allowed. When I took out the fish the snails changed a lot. 2-3" antenna length and the snails never go in their shells anymore. Sometimes I drop veggies in and all the snails on the glass will let go and all the snails float to the bottom, it's so cool even tho I think I've scared them and kinda feel bad for it. Only other thing I remember doing was I left for a week and left the tank light off and my curtains stayed closed and nerite snails started to lay eggs and haven't stopped since. I can confirm. I’ve have a new planted tank. Some Vals, swords and a bit of guppy grass all were cleared overnight by 2 silver dollars. On the bright side I had a huge pond snail issue and they also ate all of them as well. The assassin snail is the only surviver.

I've kept Thick-Lip Sunset Gouramis and Pearl Gourami and I cannot keep *any* stem plants for decorative purposes. I do buy them stem plants as snacks though! They love to eat the whole thing but most especially *love* the roots that grow along the stems. It is fun buying them just for snacks though!
I have 3 goldfish in my planted aquarium and they do wonderful. Goldfish are grazers and will comb threw sand and small light weight substrate to avoid this just buy substrate that is kinda heavy and bulky. I think it is the fact I usely feed them three times a day usely in the form of pellets, flakes or froze/thawed foods and they're uninterested in the plants as food.
A bit late for the party, but I have some to add to your list: Yoda snails absolutely loved swimming plants like frogbit and salvinia. And Amano shrimps made some of my softer plants vanish within a day after planting.
Ya, i thought mine were doing the same thing, but turns out I wasn't giving the plants enough light, the apple snails were only eating it after they died off. I got a better light and that my plants look better than ever, and no more trouble with snails eating plants
Now this one is an absolute lie. I've had BIG apple snails in my planted aquarium and never had any issues with them killing all my plants. They only eat the decaying plants.
I noticed a Kuhli loach towards the end of the video. Back in the early 90s when we started our journey into aquariums. We had a group of Kuhli loaches. Those little wrigglers won't eat your plants, but they will dig around and burrow under the substrate, thereby uprooting your plants. Oh interesting! Yes, I was worried about the kuhli loaches because I heard they like to burrow in substrate, but so far they have left it alone. Maybe it's because of the plants after all!
Ive actually experienced honey gouramis being detrimental to plants before! i have a certain floating plant which i cant remember the name of (the leaves have slight tigerstripe patterns and the bottom of the leaf looks like an air sac) which my honey gouramis seem to enjoy munching the roots off of, though typically its a dead or dying root theyll pull off it can be pretty violent and often they dont just get the rotting bits.
Good video. I have plants in every tank. I have never seen any of my snails eat a healthy plant (I have ramshorn, bladder, and trumpet). Snails are very beneficial to a planted aquarium. I also have never bought a snail. Lol. The only time you have an overpopulation of them is when there is excess food for them. Planted tanks and shrimp are my main focus.
Bala sharks will occasionally eat plants when they are smaller, until they get to the size to eat small snails and such, then they usually leave them alone
I breed the giant Colombian ramshorn snail, they eat everything. all types of plants, dead fish, but the good part is that a big mbuna could'nt crush them. They are super hard. So if you keep an plant free aquarium, these are for you for sure. They eat ALL allgae as well. Red, Green, Hair, Black beard everything. So they are perfect for that. I breed them for my Fahaka Puffers beeks. I can feed them minerals,a dn controll their diet and in that way get all the good stuff into her. Great video by the way. Subbed.
I have been given a goldfish tank at work to look after I have put some live plants in there I have not had a problem with them touching plants In my home tanks In the past I had pearl gouramis they never bothered with the plants Another great video 🐠🌿
i had 1 mystery snail decimate 30 gallons worth of floaters in a few days. i still love them because of their amazing personality but rip to my salvinia, duckweed and water lettuce.
i would never had thought that buenos aires tetras were the culprits of destroying my vals..this explains the bite marks. my cory doras likes digging up my carpet plants.
I think you did a pretty good job of rounding up those troublesome fish. My first betta, named Opie had a terrible habit of destroying my dwarf water lettuce. I assumed at the time it may have been a betta thing, but nope, it was just him it seems 🤷🏻♂️ lol 🐡💙🌟🌈
New to the channel and love the effort you put into your videos! Can't wait to see your channel grow c: I have two axolotls and would love to see a video of plants and other decorations that would be safe for them and make them happier!
I added some Australian rainbow fish to my planted tank and little by little they’re eating everything up. I try and keep their bellies full so they won’t do it but regardless they still do snack on it.
My goldfish ate all my duckweed :-( and they ate my java fern aswell. I have a 10gal planted tank and tge fish I have arent really bothing my plants except my mollies and its very little. I really enjoy your videos. I like how kindly to talk to people.
I do doubt that larger gouramies eats/destroys the plants sinces im keeping 2 Opaline gourami in a «well planted tank» and i have NEVER seen them evan nipp at the plant. I have seen my betta nipping at the plants more then my gourami so i guess maybe giant gourami, but those comes to the monster fish category.
Had 6 Red Eye Tetras, and saw Buenos Aires once and thought they look similar, might be nice to mix them and see if they school. So, I buy 6 of them today and add to my 55-gallon planted tank. Then I read that they eat plants. Now i'm terrified.
Late to the party but mine ate a large forest of val to the nubs lol. Not sure what if anything I can but in there with them. The only thing so far that has not been bothered is my floating clump of hornwort.
my super red bristlenose pleco loves the amazon swords. He actually does a great job of cleaning the broad leaves really well and will sometimes just hang out on them and take in the light.
My angel fish shredded my beautiful aponogetons. I think it was because they got in the way of their dorsal fin. They do however leave the Anubias and crypts alone in my 30 tall.
My khuli loaches don’t intentionally dig stuff up, the food just lands near the plants, my shrimp have decided that the amazon sword and water lettuce are the only plants I’m allowed to put in the tank, everything else is eaten or torn up
Very informational video! So if I were to add plants such as a val or amazon swords to my tank, my 6 1/2 inch synodontis catfish wont harm or move them around?
I've had 2 bristle nose in my planted tank for 3 months and I haven't noticed any harm to my swords. They do a nice job cleaning, I see them on the leaves of all my plants. Maybe in a year I'll see different and because of your video I'll know to watch my plecos
My list from my personal experience; Bristle nose catfish Siamese Algae Eaters (This 2 are fine when small but as they get mature they are bottomless pits ...you can throw as much veggies as u want or algae wafers at them ...they will still eat your plants when they are large... including Anubis’s & Java Fern)
With firemouth and Severum while it depends on th fish, I find sometimes they go berserk on a random plant. When i move the plant they leave it alone. So in a way they determine the aquascaping for me. Also i feed them fruits and veggies whether this makes a difference I'm not sure.
i appreciate this video :) it's a nice summary of experiences that other fish keepers have had with plant eating fish. it saved me a lot of time browsing forums
Buenos Aires will eat plants if they feel underfed. Sure even well fed they may snack on them from time to time, but mine do well in my planted tank with swords. I do have a nice spot of grass like plant that I keep in an area for them since they tend to go for that the most. Then they eat carpet plant, but after having them in my tank for a while they are starting to leave the carpet plant alone and just going for grass when they feel like they need to. Also I notice they love the seeds. The key is to keep them fed and also to know what plants they ultimately like to munch on most. Just put that grass plant in there and they most likely will leave the rest alone. Hope that helps.
I dont have a ton of experience, but from what I've seen mollies and the like will only really go for plants when they're not overfed, I tend to overfeed all my fish a little to deter from eating things other than what I give them, seems to be working well, I've got a bunch of octopus and water Sprite that haven't been touched
My plants never seemed to do well in a guppy tank. Just your normal cheap plants are trimmed down although i dont know how as i have never actually seen them bite the leaves
Interesting... might be worth posting some pics or video on a Facebook aquarium group or planted tank forum to get more eyes on the problem and see if anyone has any advice. Good luck and let me know what you discover!
Currently having an issue with pond snails and ramshorn snails eating my plants in my 10galon, which I suspect they're doing because there's not enough food and they keep breeding. Been trying to feed less to cut their numbers but now they're eating my plants, most of the plants in my 10gal have tiny holes in all the leaves and the snails are all over the plants. Might have to wipe it clean and start over :(
My dwarf gourami chow plants at the base or just pull my water wisteria right out. I THINK it might have to do with territorial issues because they only pull plants in certain spots.
In my experience, all livebearers are willing to peck at plants for algae and may end up taking bits of them with them. Roots of floating plants are also a really easy snack. Even my tetras went after smaller roots of my frogbit when I had cut back on their feeding schedule. I think the safest bet is to make sure your fish have enough plant matter in their diet/are being fed enough, and then you won't have any problems! My bn pleco likes to munch on the spongey undersides of frogbit, but other than that he leaves the plants alone. Ramshorn snails only touch decaying plant matter, although mine love the frogbit.. I think what I'm realizing here is that frogbit is kind of ideal for aquariums. If I miss a feeding at least I know nobody will starve haha
My dwarf gouramis love to nibble on amazon frogbit roots, sometimes they only eat the small food particles that was attached to the roots, but most of the time they will actually eat the hairy part of the roots. But they're far from killing or destroying the frogbits, or any other plants actually.
Ohhh, that makes a lot of sense. Yes, gouramis do peck at various surfaces and I guess that could accidentally hurt some more delicate plants that way.
Thank you for the video is really helpful! I have four tank, my mystery snails ate all my moss and they seem to have an issue with Mermaid weed plant that they keep uprooting.
So if you purchase one of these fish, can you use silk plants and such to avoid them eating the plants? Plants can be difficult to keep alive and healthy, so I’d hate to do the work for them to be eaten
I had a Green Severum cichlid once that I could not keep any plant with. Even inedible plants like anubias she would rip to pieces eventually. I tried plastic plants once, she tore them out of the substrate and beat them against the hard scale till they broke apart.
You know, I had cory catfish, and they didn't really bother my plants once they were a little more established. Just put some rocks around the base of your newly planted plants to protect them. I don't have an experience with corys and carpeting plants though; sorry!
I had problem with nibbled H. Difformis, my Ludwiga repens were eaten up, and L. Aquatica disappeared within a week. I blamed snails for this & did tore down my tank killed everyone of them but problem was not solved. However my E. Paelifolius and E. Horizontalis were doing extremely good. One fine day I saw my Red eye tetra munching on little recovering H. Polysperma leave and now I know what was going on. I am so heartbroken after that incident.
I had yoyo loaches absolutely destroy all of my plants, no roots, no leaves, just then floating stems. Caused a big nitrite spike that I had to do an annoying large water change, rehome the loaches, and rebuy and replace the plants. So I got a Rose and Mango sword, java ferns, and a small carpeting plant whose name i cant remember as I'm typing this. Got it replanted today!
My honey gourami is demolishing the roots of my floating water wisteria! He picks at all my planted pants but hasn’t successfully killed anything yet. But he’s trying haha
Buenas Aires Tetras will eat almost any plant. I haven't tried Anubias but my school of 17 even ate java fern. The only plant they haven't eaten so far is Banana plant but even then, I noticed some bite marks in the older leaves.
I have had a school if them in my planted community tank for years and they've never er bothered my plants. I wonder if they are only attracted to certain kinds?
My goldfish even chewed up the roots of my pothos ... so now my tank, which was once a planted tank with what I thought were goldfish safe plants is barren except for mossballs
Buenos Aires Tetras! NOW I know who did it. They're sneaky and just stare back at you when you try to catch the perps. My poor anubias nana petite plants didn't have a chance with those leaf chomping vandals around. Thanks, Irene, you're too cool!

I also have never bought a snail. Lol. The only time you have an overpopulation of them is when there is excess food for them. Planted tanks and shrimp are my main focus.
Lol, "I've also never bought a snail." So true!
Excellent video! I enjoyed watching. I’m sharing this with our group. Thank you for sharing!
Jose Montalvo Yay! So glad you found it helpful. :)
Subbed.
what about small 2 inch sized tinfoil barb?
wil they destroy plants too?
have u guys ever kept them in planted tank?
plz reply, i need help
I have been given a goldfish tank at work to look after I have put some live plants in there I have not had a problem with them touching plants In my home tanks In the past I had pearl gouramis they never bothered with the plants
Another great video 🐠🌿
That's great to hear! What kind of plants do you keep with the goldfish?
@@GirlTalksFish just some val a slow work to get it happy and stable 🐠🌿
i had 1 mystery snail decimate 30 gallons worth of floaters in a few days. i still love them because of their amazing personality but rip to my salvinia, duckweed and water lettuce.
My goldfish LOVE my moss and carpet they ended up costing me £80 in moss and my carpet has now been demolished ahah they definitely make my list
i would never had thought that buenos aires tetras were the culprits of destroying my vals..this explains the bite marks. my cory doras likes digging up my carpet plants.
One time I got too many glass shrimp, and they hitched my small plants. I’ve kept them since then though, without issue.
Haha, what a naughty betta!
I have a 20 gallon long with water wisteria and some fake plants and floating plants can i add corydoras or will they mess up my plants
They should be fine! My corydoras were never strong enough to root up my plants.
hi....is bristlenose pleco safe for cryptocoryne plants?
I have few plants in my aquarium before.
Then i added Buenos Aires tetras and silver dollar in it.
New to the channel and love the effort you put into your videos! Can't wait to see your channel grow c:
I have two axolotls and would love to see a video of plants and other decorations that would be safe for them and make them happier!
Yes! I would totally love to make a planted axolotl tank (see my latest video ua-cam.com/video/8O8C5cCE_eI/v-deo.html). :)
I added some Australian rainbow fish to my planted tank and little by little they’re eating everything up. I try and keep their bellies full so they won’t do it but regardless they still do snack on it.
I had an octopus plant that was huge and beautiful. Added a dwarf gourami and he ate all the leaves over the course of a few days.
my honey gourami constantly uproot my amazon swords. it is annoying as It is a low tech tank so the swords grow slowly
My goldfish ate all my duckweed :-( and they ate my java fern aswell. I have a 10gal planted tank and tge fish I have arent really bothing my plants except my mollies and its very little. I really enjoy your videos. I like how kindly to talk to people.
My ramhorn snails destroyed most of my broad leaf water sprite , so I desided to house them in a spare bear tank
How are keyhole cichlids?
Thanks for the information!
My pleasure!
Informative video and very sweet narrator.
Thank you! 😊
Awesome video! Rosy barb's will eat just about every plant possible along with being fin nippers! Ask me how I know.
Wow, had no idea! Thanks for the heads up; will be adding them to my naughty fish list. :)
Was thinking my Golden Barbs were eating my Wisteria but I have cherry barbs also. They may all be going back to the store.
I would add Rose Barb as they eaten all plants I have exept anubias. So I need to move them to other tank.
my glo tetra ruined my water wisteria , from upper part of plant only the stem is left 😅
I have black molly and a Dalmatian molly, and they ear mostly algae but also nibble some leaves of my plants.
Interesting! My mollies definitely pecked at stuff in their search for food, so I'm not surprised.
You are so right about having a brown thumb the biggest problem. I struggle so much with them too. I even managed to kill densa once :D
Had 6 Red Eye Tetras, and saw Buenos Aires once and thought they look similar, might be nice to mix them and see if they school. So, I buy 6 of them today and add to my 55-gallon planted tank. Then I read that they eat plants. Now i'm terrified.
I've had 6 in my planted community tank for a few years and haven't had any problems. I do give them a leaf if Romaine Lettuce every day
Late to the party but mine ate a large forest of val to the nubs lol.
Great job! Very enjoyable
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun researching and making it. :)
My angel fish shredded my beautiful aponogetons. I think it was because they got in the way of their dorsal fin. They do however leave the Anubias and crypts alone in my 30 tall.
Num nums... Aponogeton are known to be a source of food for fish, I also experienced this with water sprite and my angels.
Wow, I had no idea angelfish were also occasional plant eaters. 😲
My Cory's have destroyed the bottom parts or my plants lol the only leaves are higher on the stems
My khuli loaches don’t intentionally dig stuff up, the food just lands near the plants, my shrimp have decided that the amazon sword and water lettuce are the only plants I’m allowed to put in the tank, everything else is eaten or torn up
Very informational video! So if I were to add plants such as a val or amazon swords to my tank, my 6 1/2 inch synodontis catfish wont harm or move them around?
what about small 2 inch sized tinfoil barb?
wil they destroy plants too?
have u guys ever kept them in planted tank?
plz reply, i need help
Thanks for the info. I didn't know who was messing with my plants. My Buenos tetras lol
I've had 2 bristle nose in my planted tank for 3 months and I haven't noticed any harm to my swords. They do a nice job cleaning, I see them on the leaves of all my plants. Maybe in a year I'll see different and because of your video I'll know to watch my plecos
Good to know! Let me know if you see anything because I'd love to keep bristlenose plecos someday. :)
can glofish be with live plants im planning on getting some i think and giving them the life they deserve
I have five Glofish tetras and have never had an issue with them eating plants. They are nice and chill.
My list from my personal experience;
Bristle nose catfish
Siamese Algae Eaters
(This 2 are fine when small but as they get mature they are bottomless pits ...you can throw as much veggies as u want or algae wafers at them ...they will still eat your plants when they are large... including Anubis’s & Java Fern)
Eek, good to know!
With firemouth and Severum while it depends on th fish, I find sometimes they go berserk on a random plant. When i move the plant they leave it alone. So in a way they determine the aquascaping for me. Also i feed them fruits and veggies whether this makes a difference I'm not sure.
Ooo, that's a good idea - feed them their veggies and hope they leave the plants alone.
i appreciate this video :) it's a nice summary of experiences that other fish keepers have had with plant eating fish. it saved me a lot of time browsing forums
That's great to hear! Definitely feel free to browse the comments too for more details from other viewers. :)
Awesome, thanks for the insight!

Can I keep Cory Catfish in my planted aquarium ?
Can they eat my jawa Fern and Anubias Plants?
Can we put bala shark in planted tank?
I dont have a ton of experience, but from what I've seen mollies and the like will only really go for plants when they're not overfed, I tend to overfeed all my fish a little to deter from eating things other than what I give them, seems to be working well, I've got a bunch of octopus and water Sprite that haven't been touched
Ooo good to know! I really want to keep mollies again, but this time in a planted tank.
What are the plants stuck to the wood?
Anubias nana petite :)
Might have to wipe it clean and start over :(
bristlenose breeder here, I don't normally have issues with them with scarlet temple
Really enjoy your vids! Very educational! : )
Joaquín I'm so glad you liked it! :)
Yeah the Beunos tetras I have seem to leave my plants alone
My dwarf gourami chow plants at the base or just pull my water wisteria right out. I THINK it might have to do with territorial issues because they only pull plants in certain spots.
So strange! Let me know if you ever figure it out.
I have a couple rabbit snails in my tank. I’ve never had a problem.
Oh that's great to hear! What kind of plants do you keep?
my cherry barbs are constantly eating my plants, they seem to like stem plants more than others though
What kind of snail is that at 5:23? Some of these guys hitchhiked from some plants I got
Ah, that pest snail is commonly known as the bladder snail (or Physella acuta).
Girl Talks Fish Ah ok thank you for the info!!
I keep Buenos Aires tetras and never seen them even go near my live plants
Thank you for the video is really helpful! I have four tank, my mystery snails ate all my moss and they seem to have an issue with Mermaid weed plant that they keep uprooting.
budgiess x Thank you so much! Good luck with the mystery snails. :)
My Opaline Gouramis tear off the stems/leafs from my dwarf aquarium lillies. My bristlenose plecos havent eaten my Amazon as far as I have noticed.
Oh good to hear! I really want to keep bristlenose plecos someday.
So if you purchase one of these fish, can you use silk plants and such to avoid them eating the plants? Plants can be difficult to keep alive and healthy, so I’d hate to do the work for them to be eaten
My l pearl scale goldfish eat everything! They shred anything that I put in there. I toss in a few handfuls of overgrowth as a treat
I had a Green Severum cichlid once that I could not keep any plant with. Even inedible plants like anubias she would rip to pieces eventually. I tried plastic plants once, she tore them out of the substrate and beat them against the hard scale till they broke apart.
Wow, that's crazy! Haha, I love the look of severums too, so good to know for the future.
I have a few small neon tetras
Cory cats are no goes with carpeting plants or anything that is freshly planted. They just bulldoze and up root anything that is not weighted down
A Arw really? I was planning on getting albino or panda Cory’s😔
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that! Yesh, I'll add red eye tetras to my naughty list then; thanks for the warning.
I clicked to see the privacy issue sunglasses 😂 & your great content of course ❤️
Wht is the tittle of ur bckground sound in 1:00 on vid
I always see my dwarf nibbling on Cabomba leaves
Hornwort is great for goldies. Mine doesn't like the taste of it, and with some algae on the leaves, it looks like a pine tree lol.
That's awesome! I heard there are several goldfish-safe plants that can be used.
My honey gourami is demolishing the roots of my floating water wisteria! He picks at all my planted pants but hasn’t successfully killed anything yet. But he’s trying haha
mine do the same, i've got two fully grown and two young adults, the big girls are a nightmare... Everyday i find a plant floating
That's true... my honey gouramis did like to peck around at things just out of curiosity. "Food? Food? Is this food?" :P
Buenas Aires Tetras will eat almost any plant. I haven't tried Anubias but my school of 17 even ate java fern. The only plant they haven't eaten so far is Banana plant but even then, I noticed some bite marks in the older leaves.
Wow, that's crazy! I had never heard of them before doing this research, but good to hear confirmation on their plant-eating ways.
